Jerry firing Tom Landry was necessary and needed to be done. I know that makes me a wanted man back in DFW
      1. The things the Cowboys did in the late 1960s and 1970s with scouting were being improved upon by other teams in the 1980s
      2. Landry’s final 5 seasons in the NFL
      1984: 9-7
Missed the playoffs for the first time in 10 years. Lost to the winless Bills. Manufactured a QB controversy between Danny White & Gary Hogeboom. Blew a 15pt lead at home vs [NAME REDACTED]. Lost in the final minutes at Dolphins (note the season)
      1985: 10-6
That included getting blown out 44-0 at home vs da Bears. Won the NFC East, but went to Los Angeles and got shutout by the Rams in the NFC playoff game on who gets sacrificed to da Bears in the NFC Champ
      1986: 7-9
6-2 start including beating the Giants on MNF in Week 1 that saw Herschel Walker score the game winning TD over LB Lawrence Taylor (fun fact: that was Al Michaels 1st MNF game). 7-4 after a win over the Chargers where the offensive live surrendered the most sacks in NFL history. And that kicked off a 5-game losing streak that saw them get blown out at WSH and SEA on Thanksgiving Day. Some idiot threatened Landry’s life during the Rams game. First losing season since 1964. No Cowboys were selected for the Pro Bowl
      1987: 7-8
Strike season. Many players crossed the picket line due to Bum Bright dangling annuities. Cowboys went 2-1 in the strike games. The one they lost was against the Scabskins. At home. On MNF. In the final strike game. None of their players crossed the picket line. [NAME REDACTED] went on to win the Super Bowl that season. The Cowboys Week 10 win at NE was their last win there until 2021. After that a 4-game losing streak to knock them out of playoff contention
      1988: 3-13
Tony Dorsett is shipped off to Denver due to having to split carries with Walker. Most of the players from the 70s are old and reaching the end of their careers. First 10+ loss season in 25 years. His final NFL win was knocking WSH out of the playoffs. There is some talent (Herschel Walker, Michael Irvin, Nate Newton, Ken Norton Jr, Bill Bates) but a rebuild is needed. Congrats on winning Tank Bowl. Make your first overall pick a good one
      3. Speaking of Bum Bright, he only bought the team because a)the previous owner Clint Murchison Jr was in poor health, b)he clearly wasn’t interested in turning the franchise around and only bought the team to increase his portfolio, and c)sold the team to Jerry Jones due to financial losses of First Republic Bank Corporation collapse in 1988 in its connection to S&L
      4. Bum Bright was not crazy about Landry but left him twisting in the wind. Same with GM Tex Schramm. There are accounts that there was a succession plan but it sounded like it was more of a concept of a plan than anything

One addendum to the bit about Troy Aikman transferring from OU to UCLA: in the 1985 season, Aikman was the starter for the beginning of the season. But, during the fourth game of the season...against the Jimmy H
Johnson coached Mismi Hurricanes, Aikman broke his leg, prompting Switzer to change things up and install Jamelle Holieway and the wishbone back as the offense, and when OU went on to finish out the season with a National Championship, Aikman knew he wasn't getting the job back and transferred out.

    • @22steve5150

As a Dallas fan, I truly believe we won't win a trophy until Jerry Jones either dies or becomes too old, and they get him out of the GM position. He controls way to much. There is a reason all the other owners, at least the ones whose team always win like the chiefs, they hire someone for that job.
He let Jimmy go and brought in Berry Switzer, which is what doomed us. They could have won at least 4, possibly 5 straight, had they kept Jimmy.

In January 1995, after graduating from college, I got a job in Dallas. I rented an apartment with a college friend at the complex right next door to the Cowboy Cafe. My roommate and I didn’t cook so we ate dinner there regularly. The place was owned by Michael Irvin and a retired player I don’t recall (Cowens or something - he played in the 70s for the Cowboys). I saw a ton there. I can say with certainly, Michael Irvin was a PoS of a human being. Everything he did was geared toward getting laid regardless of whether the target of his affections was amenable or not. He and the hard hitting safety from UCLA (can’t recall his name - they called him “Drive-by” Edit: James Washington) scared the hell out of a female friend of mine when they invited her into their limo to meet Emmett Smith, but wouldn't let her out. (Oh, I forgot to mention, a limo would pick up Irvin and various teammates from the cafe every night he was there.) edit: ok I removed the details. But I will just say it was actually Emmett Smith who helped her. He got angry and told Irvin to let her out. I also recall that her dad, who had a luxury suite at Texas Stadium, met with Jones about it.
Also, my roommate’s best friend from HS was the first pick of the 1995 2nd rd draft. Matt O’Dwyer from Northwestern. Jets fans from the 90s recall him, I’m sure. He and Jumbo Elliot kicked the window out of a cop car. Anyway, bf the draft, he came and visited us. We went to the Cowboy Cafe and then, at Matt’s request tho he had no intention of paying, we went to The Gentlemens Club. (Like most athletes, OD never paid for anything.) We get there and are immediately called to a private area and out of the darkness comes Barry Switzer. He says to OD, “You’re a big b’wah, son. You play ball?” OD introduced himself and Switzer said he knew who he was (likely a lie). Barry then took us back into a corner bc he wanted OD to meet someone … and there was ole Jerrah! “Hah you, doon, son?” He shook my hand and thanked me, a lifelong Oiler fan, “for being a Cowboys fan.”
The good news was we didn’t have to pay for anything.

Had the internet been a thing back in the early 90s, the Cowboys would have been nothing but scandals. At its core, people do forget "being canceled" is actually just being held accountable for one's actions. Michael Irvin would have gone to jail had cell cameras existed back then. I watched a lot of football as a kid in the 80s, but mostly skipped the era when the Cowboys were winning. Kinda glad I spent my college years doing other things on Sundays.

The 70s were perhaps more fun. Despite the squeaky clean image of "America's Team" in the 70s, it's worth remembering that the novel and then-movie, "North Dallas Forty", were based on the Cowboys of the 60s and early 70s. And I suppose if you made a similar video about the 70s Raiders, your video would be flagged by RUclips bots.

Not entirely sure but I see your point. Michael was the world's most known athlete during the decade, but the Cowboys unquestionably had the most notoriety. The Cowboys, along with the 1994 MLB player's strike happening simultaneously, cemented the NFL's #1 status in the US and made it virtually unchallengeable. It was at a changing time in the US, where the old, mid-century style of US living and cultural decorum was rapidly declining and being woven into the xenomorph it is today. They beat up on the likeable 49ers, the upstart Packers, the fun little Bills, and the gritty Steelers. The league was already popular, but the reinvigoration of the Cowboys helped make sports a 24/7 phenom, as everyone wanted to know what the players (and coaches) were doing at every second of every day.

The 3rd in a row would have depended on how Deion felt about playing for Jimmy. If he goes to Dallas a year earlier…they may have won 4 in a row.
5 in a row? Ehhhh…..the issues they had in 1996 weren’t totally due to coaching. Irvin and Lett both had suspensions during the season, Haley was out most of the year, Novacek was out the entire year, Emmitt was banged up most of the year….regardless of coach, I don’t think 5 in a row was in the cards. 4 is possible though.

    Correct information:
    1. Switzer did change to a passing offense for Aikman, but Aikman broke his leg in the game against Miami. This caused Switzer to return to the Wishbone and he won a national championship with a freshman QB name Jamel Hollaway. This is why Aikman transferred to UCLA with Switzer's help.
    2. Johnson drafted Welsh in the suppliment draft, so he could trade him and acquire more draft picks. He had no intention of replacing Ailman with Welsh. Johnson wanted Aikman when he was at OSU, he wanted Aikman when Aikman transferred to UCLA, and wanted Aikman when he went to the Cowboys...
    3. The person who covered Rice in the 1992 NFC championship game and said, "I own Jerry Rice" was Larry Brown (1995 SB MVP), not Kevin Smith...
    4. Jones was drinking with his assistance coaches and said, "100 coaches could win a SB with the Cowboys roaster". Word got back to Johnson and that was the straw that broke the camels back. Also, Jones was upset that Johnson had talked to Jacksonville without his permission...
    5. Aikman is on record as saying he was excited about Switzer being the head coach. He even told Irving, who was upset about Johnson leaving, that Switzer would be tough like Johnson (which is was at Oklahoma, but not in Dallas)...
