at first was like, wow a hour vid on model concrete i'll check that out, sips coffee - wait its over already? wonderful job keeping me engaged through every step.
Thank you so very much!!! I truly appreciate it! 👍
Excellent'.. Love it'...Beautiful work'... as usual'...😁
Thank you so much!!! And thank you for watching!
Jason. A tip I learned a long time ago for masking rail heads during painting. Run a bar of soap over the length of the track. Just wipe it off when you're done painting
So you guys are making the price go up , just great
Great job on the concrete.
Thanks Hallie!!!!
It's looking fantastic Jason! I could watch 8 hours in a sitting, and be extremely happy!
Let's all look forward to that, perhaps in a live! You would have to prep ahead of time, but I would love to have a Sunday with Jason Jensen Trains!
Lisa
Thank you so very much Lisa!!! Now you have me thinking, maybe I should do a live video. Thanks for the continued support Lisa! Happy modeling!
Man, you do amazing work. Thanks for being our teacher!
Thank you so much for watching John!!! I truly appreciate it! 👍
Mama this setup is just amazing I could watch that train go on forever !!
Thanks buddy!!! I really appreciate it! 👍
Jason you are just a genius because you can do anything create a beautiful video come up with new ideas and then teach us. Great video as always and thanks again for sharing. Be safe.
Thank you so much Johnny!!! I really appreciate hearing that. Thanks for watching!!! 👍
This is one of your best videos yet. Great instruction, tips and advice. Really answered a lot of questions and gave me some new ideas. We all have at least one place on our layout where we are going to try this. I also appreciate your tip on consistency in color and how you manage to keep that common look. Thank you!
Thank you so much Ryan!!! I really appreciate it and thanks for watching!!! 👍
Loving your work, I want to place mine in cobblestones for my European layout
Thank you so much!!! That sounds great!
Watching you makes me wish that I could get my train, HO scale train out of storage but I’ve no room where I live😭
Jason , excellent video , giving me lots of ideas
Thank you so much for watching!!! Happy modeling! 👍
Great video
Thank you so much Gary!!!! 👍
Just a small nitpick. The two metal “horns” just to the left of the crane (at 44:48) is just for breaking the direction of a mooring line. It needs a bollard where the line is tied. :)
Nice watching it now 👌
Thank you so much!!!
@@JasonJensenTrains You inspire me to try my layout again, I gave up when I wasn't able to do what I imagined in my mind.
That's looking great Jason. Looking forward to the completed scene.
Thank you so much Chris and thanks for watching!!! 👍
Love your skills with weathering. Your artistic talent really shows when you’re painting. I would really enjoy seeing a bright spot on the layout where some building is under construction. At such a busy seaport there would always be some new addition or fresh repair.
Thank you so much!!! I really appreciate hearing that!
Another great video Jason! I love your mid-show tips. They break up the rhythm of the explainer portions for a change of pace. I think I counted at least four this time!
Thank you so much Rich and thank you for watching!!! I really appreciate it! 👍
Hi Jason. It's a neat job you did. Course you got a heat cutter. It helps A LOT ! But using foam is a great idea. Especially when there's a big rail curve... Hard to make it look nice using styrene. Even harder pooring plaster over the place too. Messy !!! Still learning a lot from you. Many thanks. Keep on your good work.
Great job
Thank you so much and thank you for watching!!! 👍
That is really turning out to be a fantastic area. If I ever need to do track in concrete, I think I will use your method. Nice work. Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you so Larry!!! It’s an easy technique just time consuming. Thanks for watching! 👍
Hi ya Jason. Sometimes one must travel the harder trail to get where one is going. And you certainly did that here. With magnificent results. Thanks for another great teaching video. I look forward to your next update. Take care. See ya next time.
Thank you so very much Norman!!! It definitely was a long project. Thanks for watching buddy! 👍
Your detail work is incredible, the cracks and dirt add so much to the layout.
Thank you so very much!!! I really appreciate it! 👍
Thank you Jason for share part of your experience to do a great job on the diorama, very enjoyable dosen't feel that was long video.
Cesar.
Thank you so much Cesar!!! I truly appreciate it! 👍
Awesome segment...looking forward to seeing that concrete finished...cheers for the update.
Thank you so very much!!! I truly appreciate it! 👍
I love how you painted your walls to look like the sky.
As always, great work. Things are progressing pretty quickly. Looking forward to the next video.
Thank you so much!!! I truly appreciate it!
Beautiful, detailed work as always, Jason.
Thank you so much!!! I really appreciate it!
Man, I LOVE your work, your painting in particular is worth the price of admission alone. Thank you for sharing Jason
Oh Yeah!
Thank you!!! 👍
Thanks Jason, I've learned so much from you. I'm happy to see your longer format videos. Feel free to show us every step!
Thank you so much Mike!!! I truly appreciate it! 👍
just a, WOW!!! nice!!
Love what you're doing here, thanks for the video!
Thank you!!! And thanks for watching! 👍
You are lucky with your 2-rail track. I work with Märklin 3-rail and that is always a struggle with the middle rail (called puko's) which makes it impossible to glue in a styrofoam strip in the middle. This track becomes stunning. Keep going. Br. Ronald (Modellbahn Rosenbahn)
Thanks again Jason for a great tutorial. I love the way the concrete comes out using the Cocoon Chalk paint. I hope I can source it here in Australia, because the effect you got looks soooo lifelike. Cheers Bruce
Jason, yet another awesome video. Great techniques with the styrofoam cutting, and thanks for the tips with the Proxxon Bench foam cutter. I have mine in the mail.
The advice on the contrete painting was really helpful, and good to know to set aside the same paint (brand and colour) and then it will be consistent.
Cheers, and stay safe, and thank you for keeping us motivated. Michael
Thank you so much Michael!!! I really appreciate it and thanks for watching! Cheers! 👍
If you want a better effect on your broken concrete, just push down where it is broken and you'll see how great it looks.
Great video and interesting technique, had not seen this done with foam before, thanks for sharing! edit - at least I don't remember seeing concrete done like this before :)
Thank you so much!!! It was a first for me. Thanks for watching!
I like the realistic details.
Thank you so much!!! I really appreciate it!
Awesome stuff thanks!!
Thank you so very much!!!
This is so amazing and just in time. This winters project is Alamosa. And the New Rex Hotel. Small. 3x8 feet. One track EXACTLY like this. Score. Thanks.
Sounds great! Happy modeling my friend!!! 👍
As always, thank you for sharing your construction ideas and how you use various materials - styrofoam and paint. I may not use them in the same manner but you provide detailed information that allows me to apply them in my own unique way. Happy modeling! The use of concrete has limited application for my 1930s rural logging railroad but I am considering its use for some future construction projects involving a foundation for a grist mill and the dam on the river. Many thanks!
Thank you so much for watching Mark!!! I really appreciate it! Happy modeling! 👍
Once again Jason, yoy sir has done a great job. Now I need to get started on something down in the bassment!!!👍
Thank you so much Clarence!!! 👍
Fantastic Jason, and thanks for so many tips.
Thank you so much Steve!!!
Awesome channel man!
Thank you so much buddy!!! Love your work! 👍
Where Great Minds Gather ! Excellent Vid Jason ….. Gheeeez you can’t imagine all the things I’ve learned since I’ve been following you the past 2 years ? I couldn’t possibly thank you enough 😁 I just ordered this Proxxon Hot Wire table, I have several of the smaller hand tools but this cutter will take me to and beyond my next level ! Have a great evening, Bill L.
Thank you so much Bill!!! I really appreciate it! Good luck with the cutter. You will love it! Happy modeling!!! 👍
Thanks Jason, actually just went to Patreon to add myself to your supporters and then I realize maybe I’ll wait a few days until the 1st to be in sync with the billing cycle ? But I’m in my friend, sure couldn’t place a price on all I’ve learned ! Thanks Bill LePinske aka Retired Veteran
Wow, thank you so much Bill! I truly appreciate it and thank you for your service! 👍🇺🇸
Jason, Just to be sure … which model Proxxon Hot Wire table are you using in this video ? I’m not sure if there is more then one to choose from but would like to make sure I’m ordering the correct cutter ? Thanks Jason ….
They only have one.
Awesome, great job Jason I like your ideas and thoughts for your layout.
Thank you so much Randell!!!
Thanks so much for the info and tips regarding hot wire foam cutter!! A year ago bought one to experiment with. Now have lots of ideas to try out. All the best ...
Your welcome Donald!!! Thanks for watching and happy modeling!
@@JasonJensenTrains Starting to build a steel mill layout and need tracks laid in concrete. Tracks inside and around many of the steel mill structures like electric furnace, blast furnace, rolling mills, etc. Never liked the idea of spreading and sanding spackling. Kinda knew I'd have a use for the foam cutter!! Picked up a cheap hand-held $20 foam cutter to make smaller pieces of large 4'x8' foam sheets.
Love the ATSF center cab switcher... I have 2 of them....
Thank you!!! I love small switchers! Thanks for watching!!! 👍
Looking awesome Jason, I've used this technique before but with foam core boards and sanded the surface to get that rough concrete surface. Exciting stuff!
Thank you so much Alex!!! Always appreciate hearing from you! 👍
I've a very short section of embedded rails so I used Kato embedded track. Trick for me was mating Atlas code 55 and filling in concrete around the Kato
Great video! Got this recommended by the algorithm and Im glad since your work is absolutely stunning! The concrete looks so good, wow. I'll definitely be using this technique on my future layout.
Thank you so much!!! Glad to have you along on the journey! 👍
I was one of the "remove half of the trestle" people! I feel guilty, but not that guilty, for making extra work for you. I'm sure you can use the spare trestles elsewhere. Nice job on the pink styrofoam concrete. I've used softer grey craft foam before and, as long as you don't press on it too hard, it cuts out the chamferring of the edges. However, there's always more than one way to skin a cat! Cheers
No worries Davie!!! I’m really happy with removing the trestles. It’s gonna look really nice! Thanks for watching! 👍
@@JasonJensenTrains I actually loved your trestle as I love when they are in layouts since I am an old Steam and trestle fan
Great video Jason, did a great job on the concrete mate , very nice weathering to 👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏have a good one
Thank you so much!!! I truly appreciate it! 👍
I didn't know you asked about the thresttles... If it was for me, I would keep all of them. For only ONE reason : it adds a lot of details to the scene. You may replace them for something else way better (I trust you on this one 100%) but there's nothing like bridges. Especially old ones made out of wood. My opinion...
What fun! As usual it prompts me to do something. Now .. want to see if I an use concrete on my layout.
Thank you so much Edward!!! I’m sure you will do something awesome! Thanks for watching!!! 👍
Rather than pick up each individual tile, why not gently slide a piece of poster board under the tiles as the lie, and then gently move the poster board onto the auxiliary work surface in the lower left corner of the screen?
Thanks for the video though as I've got the same project coming up very soon! Great ideas as usual.
Thanks Jason, I learned a lot. But the biggest thing I learned is that wiping your hands on the paper towel on the Styrofoam is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me! Now if you'll excuse me I have to go add some cracks to my concrete...
Thank you so much!!! Lol, sorry about that. Thanks for watching and happy modeling!!! 👍
Epic effort Jason, Very cool. Cheer's John
Thank you so much John!!! I really appreciate it! 👍
Another great video, you are a magician! Amazing how the subtlety of the paint can do so much to in the illusion of the modeling. Have you ever done videos on weathering rolling stock, steam locos, and Diesel locos?
Thank you so much!!! No, but I will definitely have videos like that in the future now that I have trains running! 👍
It is incredible ?
Great video, indeed ! I like the way you "create" concrete. Right now I am building a cement plant with a rather large classification yard. I would like the yard to lay entirely on inset tracks but I'm wondering what to do with the turnouts...
God idea to use N scale for forced perspective. I.n the UK we could use TT (3mm) scale buildings and N scale after that.
👍
Jason, i was watching another of your vids where u are making a metal door for your sci fi diorama. You may know this already, but Tichy, precision scale, etc do make nut/bolt/washer castings.
As always a very informative Video. I hope you show more on the N scale back ground buildings, how you do it, do you scan the wall sections with window and doors attached ? The tips on the foam cutter were great, I have had mine for 2 years and had to learn those on my own. I cringed as you used the liquid nails , I use Styrogoo from the hot wire foam factory I like the control in tight places sets fast I have used it to set buildings, resin parts to foam. It is cheaper than LN. Thanks!
Thank you so much Will!!! I will definitely look into that glue. Thanks for sharing! 👍 and yes I will have videos on building the N scale structures. Thanks for watching!
Good to see the Master of Desaster (jk) again in Action. Jason, when I cut long Pieces with the Styrofoam Cutter, I turn the Power off, than I don't get any Lines.
The piers you are using as background models. What brand are they? Where did they come from?
@@painter662 why you ask me? I am not Jason!
@@HoboHeaven sorry
Thank you so much!!! I always appreciate your support! 👍

excellent video , your a true master modeler . could you please let me know the model and make of you wire heat cutter . thank you for all you add to our hobby .
Thank you so very much!!! The cutter is made by Proxxon. I believe you can buy it on Amazon. Thanks for watching!!! 👍
still planning on using n scale buildings with HO scale layout
another great video and great techniques.with all of the extra railroad property you will need a way to keep tresspassers out.i have something that might help and would meka a great video as well. is there a way i can send you something? thanks for the inspiration and the great videos.
Thank you so much Glenn!!! I plan on making a video showing how to make a chain link fence that will be place in this area. Thanks for watching! 👍
@@JasonJensenTrains i work as a scenic carpenter in ny and we sometimes get interesting materials. in a past job we got some ribbed acrylic that makes really nice corrugated material (i use baking trays).
I have some extra acrylic if you would like to try i can send you a couple pieces to try .
Glenn
I only watched this video up until you made the impression on the styrofoam. From the moment this video started that's what I would've done. The rest is elementary.
Jason, the bridge that I was referring to in my last comment question is the bridge in this vedio. Can you direct me to the video where you painted and weathered this bridge? The paint you used was MIG Green Blue AMMO 543. Actually, I just saw that someone else has inquired about the same bridge. I now know the name of the video I looking for...“ Building Red Hook Wharf part 3 “.😎
Looks like you found the video. You will see in the video I used a special chipping fluid from AMMO!
Great work. You’ve mentioned before the size and thickness of wood from northeastern scale lumber for your piers, would that be board and batten or what? Thanks for any help.
Do you always go light to dark with pigments?
Yes, always!
Jason, at 00:1 of your video, what color(s) did you use to paint your bridge? Thank you
Please watch my video called “ Building Red Hook Wharf part 3 “. In that video I show how I painted that bridge. 👍
For the width of the center sections inside the track, it looks like you took them to the edge of the tie plates?
Jason I really like the look results of this project. My problem is, well problem isn't quite right. My main concern is the hold up of the Styrofoam. With use and moving of various things like cars and the such causing dents and minor to major damage over time. How has your experience been in the past 🤔?? This isn't meant as a compliment but a concern for me. I really would appreciate your thoughts on this.
Thanks again, Chris
It’s a great point Chris! You really have to be careful with it. You could cover the area with some cardboard while working on it. I will say that after it is painted it becomes a little harder to dent. The acrylic paint hardens and adds a little bit of a protective coat over it. If you cut squares like I did you could replace one if it gets damaged. Thanks for watching Chris!!! 👍
Thank you Sir for answering. I've been kind trying it out for myself. Take care and keep them coming, Chris
Great work Jason! I really want to put some rails in concrete on my next layout and never thought of using foam. I have a question for one of the plastic kits I am building, I painted it a light sand color but want to go over it with a white wash. Would it look more realistic with a white wash or a dry brushing? Cheers Brian
Thank you so much!!! I really appreciate it! I think dry brushing but you may want to experiment on the back wall or a scrap piece of plastic first. Happy modeling!!! 👍
The piers you are using as background models. What brand are they? Where did they come from?
I bought them from Walthers .com close to 20 years ago. Don’t remember the manufacture, sorry.
Where are the buildings next to the concrete area from? The big ones you point at, at 43:11. I've seen them in the background of a few videos now and I don't think you made a video about them.
They are close to 20 years old. I bought them from Walthers.com
Where did you get that foam cutter? I could certainly use something like that for my own projects.
You can find it on Amazon. 👍
What kind of Styrofoam was used? Can any Styrofoam be used or are there certain types that you should use?
My only complaint about this hot wire cutter is the angle protractor guide is sloppy. I glued mine at 90 degrees because I never use any other setting.
Hi Jason, the overview of the layout is just gorgeous. Again have a question: Behind RED HOOK Fish Oil there are these large background buildings with those great doors/ gates. Where are they from, who manufactured them? As always, Love It. Karl
Thank you so much Karl!!! I bought them from Walthers.com close to 20 years ago.
Hi Jason! Have You tried depressing if You will, a switch or turnout on styrofoam? I'm looking to give it a try on an o gauge three rail turnout perhaps applying some of Your techniques from Your "Rails on concrete using Styrofoam" video! Any tips that You could give me on this project, will be very welcome!
Keep up Your Great RR Modelling Work!
Regards,
RR
Thank you so much for watching Robert!!! I would try to find some real life photos first . Then just try to copy the look with foam. Thanks for watching!!!
@@JasonJensenTrains Thank You Jason for Your reply! That's what I'll do! Please keep posting new videos!
Hi Jason,
Just wondering why you're starting your scenery at the front and working back?
Wouldn't it be better to get all the stuff at the back done 1st so you don't accidentally break the stuff at the front?
I just work on what ever area I’m motivated in. I’m not a accident prone person so I haven’t broke anything yet. Thanks for watching!!! 👍
Hi Jason, i have a question. but before i do let me say these are some of the best vids i have seen on modeling. i have asked u this before but i never got an answer. What camera do u use for your videos and close up shots? The vids are so clear! so, if u could answer me that would help me as a modeler. Thanks man.
Thank you so very much!!! I truly appreciate it! I use a Sony Handycam 9.2
hope that helps. Thanks for watching! 👍
Thank u so much my friend! I am a modeler myself. HO. I super detail locomotives as well as weathering them. As a matter of fact, i made alot of the lighted smd marker lights that adorn many of Howard Zanes steam and diesel locomotives. I love watching you work brother. U are teaching more about weathering, building, detailing etc. structures than i have learned anywhere else. I just purchased $200.00 worth of mig Ammo products! I have an outdoors youtube channel also. Yellow Hawk Customs Outdoors. Thank u.
You don't throw expensive pink foam away .those strips could be used for the edges or to fill in .it's wasteful to just throw it away.
Been watching you for a few years and something continues to bother me about your layout. Don’t get me wrong, I think you’re more or less a genius, when it comes to creating highly realistic buildings, etc. But, where do the people live in this town [?] of yours? It seems like pretty much all the buildings in your layout are businesses… Am I missing something?
Thanks for the continued support Rich!!! I really appreciate it! The city side of the layout will have LOTS of apartments, just haven’t gotten that far yet, lol. Stay tuned…. 👍
nice video
Great to see you also use the Proxxon Thermocut, it's one of my favorite modeling tools
If you want to get more out of this tool, I advise you to buy the Proxxon foot switch as well, so you can interrupt the power supply with your foot and have both hands free to work with the Styrodur / Foam
I also use a few tools from Gerard Boom (shiftinglands or shiftinglands-usa ) I don't want to miss the GuiderPro or the Circular Cutting Board anymore
Maybe just search for "Shiftinglands" or "Gerard Boom" on RUclips, there are also lots of great videos explaining the tools
