Yeah basically 😅 It’s all really complicated but there’s a reason kaworu dies in every time line. Not only is he a huge trigger in progressing the events, but also Shinji’s character development.
I would honestly say that they are the most heartbreaking and tragic couple ever. They are written to meet in every timeline by the book of life and as far as we see, they always fall in love with each other. However about 99% of the time they don’t end up together. And I say 99% because in one ending of the neon genesis games they end up together but that’s about the only time we see that happen unfortunately. Which probably means it’s pretty rare that they live happily ever after with each other. This is because kaworu is meant to die. Now, there is a lot of debate about what Kaworu’s character symbolize but one that I agree with/ makes sense to me is that he symbolizes Jesus Christ. He has to die every time because it’s his attempt to save humanity. And he surrenders to Shinji every time because not only does he want to save humanity but ultimately Shinji. And before it gets to Kaworu is only an Angel and that’s why he loves shinji cause he’s human I also wanna look back at the movies. I think the movies definitely expand his character and his relationship with shinji. Their love for each other is real and for whatever reason Kaworu’s feeling for Shinji develops, it’s real and he loves Shinji for him not as some human that’s fun to observe. At this point i just assumed that they killed Kaworu on purpose to have some sort of character development going on like uncle Ben and Spiderman
