BMW are experts at controversial design! Same thing was said when the first X6 was launched... Everybody hated it. Now it is one of the best selling SAV's on the market... the Asian market in particular go nuts for the X6. As for the Grille... I will wait till i see it in person!
It's a brand new shiny BMW, what's not too like, but seriously this is an awesome car. I don't dislike the grill, change is good and the old grill has been around for quite a few years now. Another tip top video Pete. Keep 'em coming... :)
Grill is a grower for sure! I am a BMW fan boy and I like the all round package if the 4 Series especially that M440i. MLites are great and are a great sweet spot in the BMW portfolio.
I’ll be honest, I’m not a fan of the looks but you can’t deny how it drives and the build quality. Also just a side note, loving how well put together your vids are mate, edited so well and all the camera views are spot on, makes the review so enjoyable to watch.
I think people are wrong about the looks of this car the same way they were when the E60 5 series was announced. Just wait a few years and people will be saying the opposite. I saw one of these new 4 series on the road and it looks way different and better in real life than it does in any photos of videos. Just something about the car that can't be fully captured or appreciated on film.

Good evening PP. Another great review. As a BMW 4 series owner, i can confirm that as a mile muncher they are a fantastic and extremely comfortable place to be. I have the diesel variant and on the motorway get almost 60MPG. For a car of that size and weight i still find it mindboggling. Unfortunately, i have to confess that i am not a fan of the new designed grille. 🤔
Great looking car, but the 4 Series has gone into another dimension. My 1st BMW was a 2nd hand 318is coupe, I then ordered in 2000 the latest 3 coupe which was a 320i, this was a 6 cylinder 2293 (I think ?) costing around £23k (no discount to be had and waited 3 months for delivery). The 4 series starting at circa £39k is out off my reach if, like for like as when I ordered my first new car. The 2 series would have to be the one I'd have to look at now ? The new Beemer Grill will be loved by all, soon, remember around the early 00's when Audi did it on the A4, I rest my case. By the way it would of been fun to see you pick those two slow cars off at the end of your review... ha ha ha. Keep it going Pedro 👍

I do love the new 4 Series. Especially love the M440i. And I love that Tanzanite Blue too and have done for years. And I love the grill too. Like you said, wasn't sure at the beginning. Thought it was like an angry beaver to look at. But... It kinda grows on you. :-))... Mat from CarWow timed his M440i to 3.9 seconds to 60 if my memory serves me right and Joe Achilles did 4.1 in the wet! And you did 3.6 seconds!!?? Awesome :-))... Nice on Pete. Hmmm...in 1986 my brand new 325iSport was so good, I could not believe that I had been able to buy it. It seemed super smooth and very quick but in comparison to this 440i it was nowhere. I understand and appreciate that it drives beautifully and I am sure a test drive would be captivating...but to look at...Argghh...the grille looks less awful with dark colours and the number plate improves it greatly. The rest...well...i guess it grows on you but I struggle to like it....I’m sorry... maybe when I see one perhaps. As for the driver at Goodwood....yessss.....I think I would have asked him to stop and I would have walked back to the Paddock. I think the front seats look very comfortable! Also yea not a huge fan of the front end but I’d say if u take the whole car in it seems to blend the car together. But if you just look at the cars front end then yea it don’t work. In my opinion. I agree all the debates created from this crazy front end was definitely a winner in the publicity department! Silverstone and Bicester you must like this area. lol. Bicester Heritage a very interesting place for petrol heads, centrally located and maybe a contender for a Petrol Ped meet up next year ?
Great review as always! I may be in a minority but I like this car, it's rather striking. I used to prefer Audi to BMW but since Audi abandoned the mmi dial and went all touchscreen and dropped their interior quality (some of the latest Audi's feel decidedly average inside) i have swung towards BMW. BMW interior quality is ahead of Audi now and their infotainment interface now much better. And they drive well. Although I have to admit that now I would prefer an EV.

I like everyone else at first heavily criticised that grille. But if you look at the previous 4 series, it looks very soft at the front. The very small, typical BMW grills give it a very dainty appearance. This new grille gives the new 4 series a real meaty, hard edged front appearance. I think the same shape but a bit smaller would have been perfect but given the option between this and the previous, I'll take this new one everytime.
For me it’s a bit like marmite, you either love it or hate it. But I think you’re right seen it on video and in magazines is totally different to in the flesh. I will wait until I get up close and personal with one before I make my full decision. Great video again mate.

Well as I put the other day - I’m no Beemer lover, but there’s no doubt this is a looker. Wether it’s the blue black colour combo on this, I don’t know, but it looks gorgeous. The grill, what’s not to like?
Hopefully picking one up next weekend. Took the convertible for a test drive a few weeks back and it was a blast. Can’t decide whether to go coupe or soft top but the thought of an extra 150kg is pushing me towards the coupe

Very nice mate. Can you use the Hybrid mode alone when you are in town at slow speed? Does the engine shut off itself when you are in eco mode and taking it easy on throttle?

If you make the lower half the grill body coloured it actually looks a lot better. Especially the M3/4. I've done photoshop mock ups it looks really good.

£38 / £53 thousand for a 4-series? I think the money being asked for cars nowadays is just nuts. Especially when you then add any options. Trade that in in three years and you’ll be lucky to get £25k. 3.6 to 60? With that sort of performance, ifboth straight line and round a circuit, I’d not bother with m3 if was in market as no way you can use extra performance. I’d spend difference on fuel ‘ tyres.
I hope you are correct and it looks better in the flesh. It looks hopeless to me, the back and the front seem like they were designed by 2 different teams, and it looks huge. I bet the next 2 series will be the size of the last 4 series........the only BMW I like right now is the M2 (and M240i).

Hi Ped Lots of features to like with this car ie. engine, interior, rear end styling, performance, BUT that grille no no. Loss of identity in my eyes. One thing that amuses my cynical mind, do you remember when Audi introduced the Quattro to the buying public, and BMW tried to convince any customer that if you wanted a real drivers car, it had to be rear wheel drive. How times and perceptions change.😏😏
Did they have one of there people following you, after you got into the car a car showed up behind you. That’s cool if they did. You said this was a six cylinder, that’s one of there best engine.
As a previous e36 m3 owner (US spec...) and current Subaru STI owner, I’m a bit jealous of how refined and fast the 4 series seems. Yet, still prefer my current car at less than half of not a third of the price. Earplugs and mods are cheaper than the massive depreciation this 4 series is guaranteed to experience. Now, a 2 series....
Nobody can like that grill, I could live with it, and like the car. But that grill yuk. Are audi and BMW having a competition to see who can get the biggest one.
I agree. I can imagine it's beautiful drive but if I had to use one, I'd be parking it snout in to parking spaces so I'd see its rear end when returning to it. I'd only take photos of it's side view and back end which would totally change me as I take pics of my mini everywhere like it's my child 😂
I don’t understand BMWs move this year. Their M340i and this M440i are absolute monsters and massively well priced. Surely the M3 and 4 are gonna suffer cause of how much you get for your money with these models. ???
I honestly think that those who say 'You'll get use to the grills" and "why are people making a big deal of the grills, its change, move on, you're stuck in the past" are the type of people who either haven't been long term BMW fans, or that they are getting benefits/perks from BMW Press team. I am sorry, I don't think i'll ever think "one day, the huge grills will grow on me". I will in-fact be always thinking "it would've been so much better if the grill sizes were kept conservatively" from 5-10 years to come. I don't think its right to be complicit and to conform that this is the 'right direction' that BMW's design will be. BMW deserve to be called out for the mistakes. If you don't, you're basically going to let the Chinese market dictate the future of BMWs - thats precisely where this revolting grill obsession came from. The 4 series doesn't even have a hoffmeister kink, and looking at the side view, the waistline (the character line below the windows of the doors) is an absolute mess compared to the F32 4 series. And FYI, I own an E36 3 series, and appreciate the E46 M3 CSL, so its not like i'm a hater of BMW - although you can say I dislike most modern BMWs now.
@@PetrolPed Yes you're not wrong about older BMWs having bigger grills. But the '328''s big grill was a necessity to function as radiators. The grill belonged to the overall shape of the car - it was well proportioned. In the case of the new 4 series, parts of this big grill are not functional at all (particularly around the top of it) - parts of the oversized and contrived grill act as a blanking plate. If BMW so desperately wanted their grills to be bigger, they should've just widen the grills, like they have for the new Z4. Otherwise this tall grill trend looks like Hitler's moustache.
With the small rear windows and lower roofline I reckon the rear seats will feel more claustrophobic than the old one - that's a pity because BMW 3 and 4 coupes have been exceptionally versatile up to now. I don't think i'll be looking at one of these which makes me feel a bit deflated having had BMW's for either me or my wife for nearly 30 years.
I think the styling is pretty stunning everywhere except the kidney nostril grill was boosted by McDonald's supersize options. What is up with a huge grill if you only put solid paneling behind it? Purely decorative faux vents have been out of control for some time, and now BMW decides to apply that to the grill? Seriously? I think that black plastic showing through the faux grill vents will look pretty tatty after a couple years of exposure to sunlight and the elements, especially in sunnier climates. Beyond that controversy, it looks like a true driver's car. At least you aren't forced to stare at the phony grill while sitting behind the steering wheel with the skinny pedal mashed to the floor.

In fact, the most suitable color for this car is a dark colour. My BMW M440i is for example black, with cognac / brown interior.

It is only a mild hybrid. It helps reduce turbo lag and improve efficiency. There is no EV only running 👎

Lots of features to like with this car ie. engine, interior, rear end styling, performance, BUT that grille no no. Loss of identity in my eyes. One thing that amuses my cynical mind, do you remember when Audi introduced the Quattro to the buying public, and BMW tried to convince any customer that if you wanted a real drivers car, it had to be rear wheel drive. How times and perceptions change.😏😏

As a previous e36 m3 owner (US spec...) and current Subaru STI owner, I’m a bit jealous of how refined and fast the 4 series seems. Yet, still prefer my current car at less than half of not a third of the price. Earplugs and mods are cheaper than the massive depreciation this 4 series is guaranteed to experience. Now, a 2 series....
Nobody can like that grill, I could live with it, and like the car. But that grill yuk. Are audi and BMW having a competition to see who can get the biggest one.
I agree. I can imagine it's beautiful drive but if I had to use one, I'd be parking it snout in to parking spaces so I'd see its rear end when returning to it. I'd only take photos of it's side view and back end which would totally change me as I take pics of my mini everywhere like it's my child 😂
Never been a fan of the 4 series and the new grill for me just makes it even less appealing to me. Great video as always.

I don’t understand BMWs move this year. Their M340i and this M440i are absolute monsters and massively well priced. Surely the M3 and 4 are gonna suffer cause of how much you get for your money with these models. ???

I honestly think that those who say 'You'll get use to the grills" and "why are people making a big deal of the grills, its change, move on, you're stuck in the past" are the type of people who either haven't been long term BMW fans, or that they are getting benefits/perks from BMW Press team. I am sorry, I don't think i'll ever think "one day, the huge grills will grow on me". I will in-fact be always thinking "it would've been so much better if the grill sizes were kept conservatively" from 5-10 years to come. I don't think its right to be complicit and to conform that this is the 'right direction' that BMW's design will be. BMW deserve to be called out for the mistakes. If you don't, you're basically going to let the Chinese market dictate the future of BMWs - thats precisely where this revolting grill obsession came from. The 4 series doesn't even have a hoffmeister kink, and looking at the side view, the waistline (the character line below the windows of the doors) is an absolute mess compared to the F32 4 series. And FYI, I own an E36 3 series, and appreciate the E46 M3 CSL, so its not like i'm a hater of BMW - although you can say I dislike most modern BMWs now.
Look at the history of grill design in BMW. They’ve had big grills from back in the day 🤷♂️
@@PetrolPed Yes you're not wrong about older BMWs having bigger grills. But the '328''s big grill was a necessity to function as radiators. The grill belonged to the overall shape of the car - it was well proportioned. In the case of the new 4 series, parts of this big grill are not functional at all (particularly around the top of it) - parts of the oversized and contrived grill act as a blanking plate. If BMW so desperately wanted their grills to be bigger, they should've just widen the grills, like they have for the new Z4. Otherwise this tall grill trend looks like Hitler's moustache.

With the small rear windows and lower roofline I reckon the rear seats will feel more claustrophobic than the old one - that's a pity because BMW 3 and 4 coupes have been exceptionally versatile up to now. I don't think i'll be looking at one of these which makes me feel a bit deflated having had BMW's for either me or my wife for nearly 30 years.

I think the styling is pretty stunning everywhere except the kidney nostril grill was boosted by McDonald's supersize options. What is up with a huge grill if you only put solid paneling behind it? Purely decorative faux vents have been out of control for some time, and now BMW decides to apply that to the grill? Seriously? I think that black plastic showing through the faux grill vents will look pretty tatty after a couple years of exposure to sunlight and the elements, especially in sunnier climates. Beyond that controversy, it looks like a true driver's car. At least you aren't forced to stare at the phony grill while sitting behind the steering wheel with the skinny pedal mashed to the floor.
