My family is historically catholic and I was told by them that back in the day one of my relatives found out he was gonna be targeted by the klan. So when he went to barber he memorized everyone's shoes so when they came, he pulled out his rifle and yelled out the names of the people there and they left him alone after that.

I think the "History with Lightning" quote is probably false. Especially given how heavily the white house screening was promoted, you'd think that it would have shown up before the 1930s, and it would have been quoted from someone who was actually there. Instead, we don't get that quoted until 1937, and it's not sourced, just stated.
We don't know any actual statements he made, and it's likely that he was complimentary considering that the novel was written by someone he knew from college, and that was the person who screened it for him. We don't know his ACTUAL response, but we do have a press release, which says
"It is true that “The Birth of a Nation” was [screened for] the President and his family at the White House, but the President was entirely unaware of the character of the [film] before it was presented and has at no time expressed his approbation of it. Its exhibition at the White House was a courtesy extended to an old acquaintance."
Edit: We should remember, of course, that this response is coming after Wilson was criticized for screening the film at all. He had plenty of reason to downplay a positive response. In addition, Wilson was a great proponent of the Lost Cause myth, so his views were not far from those expressed in the film. It's pretty unlikely he had no idea what the film was going to be about, particularly if it's based on a book by someone he knew, one would imagine that that person at least told him about the book. However, he did in 1918 comment to his personal secretary that the film was "Unfortunate" and that he hoped it wouldn't be screened in areas with too many African-Americans.
That's not to say that he was some sort of anti-racist who saw the film as nonsensical propaganda. He could probably be better compared to someone like Mitt Romney, someone who is almost certainly personally racist and is happy to trade in coded stereotypes, but is taken aback when the quiet part is said out loud.
The whole "we must defend Anglo-Saxon civilisation" may be the biggest crok of shit. Slavery was established as legally indefensible in the UK 1772, before the independance of the US, the slave trade was abolished in the UK in 1807 (though it took until 1838 for all colonies to be freed). It was abolished in the UK before it was abolished in France.
The UK absolutely had an ugly history with slavery as did every major power, the fact there was a slave trade to be abolished in the first place proves that indisputably, but especially by the time the KKK was around it was staunchly abolitionist.
Like a lot of the discussion about morals and rights are clearly reprenehsible and appalling, but this is flat out rejection of reality. Recent reality too. This is on par with claiming that Marget Thatcher was actually a commie.

I grew up in Maine, and had to learn a little local history....
So New England has always had issues with latent anti-Catholicism, which it largely inherited from England in the 1600s-1700s (without getting into it too much, England was suuuuuuuper anti-Catholic at that time and the English settlers brought it over with them). Fast forward to the late 1800s in the aftermath of the Civil War, and there was a huge influx of Quebecois French to work the mills in New England, in particular Maine, which already had a French population. So you had that classic mix of "religion we don't like" and "immigrant labor", so the local white residents naturally became hostile towards them, and there were conspiracy theories about a papal takeover of New England, y'know, the usual nonsense. Fertile recruiting ground for the equally anti-Catholic KKK of the 1910s-20s...
The KKK wound up being so popular in Maine in the 1920s that there was actually a massive thousands-strong parade in my hometown a little south of Portland in 1922 if memory serves. The parade even included a significant street battle with the French locals in the next town over from mine.
Heard so many c's and q's as k's in this episode...
