  • The Bramfam have come under fire recently for a controversial 'prank' that they did on one of their kids for Tiktok. And the deeper I dig, the more concerned I become about this channel, and family channels in general.

Crazy how people seem to need something to directly be horrible physical or psychological abuse in order for it not to be okay…literally every single thing you do or say to a child will have gigantic consequences and intentionally making a child cry even once will have *devastating* effects forever. This right here? This is trauma being formed in real time. And they find it *funny*

Exactly. Even in a “healthy” ish environment it can have detrimental effects. They are clearly ignoring their children and their boundaries. They need to listen to the comments and to their children. Cuz I guarantee that if this keeps up, their children won’t want to speak to them anymore.

It’s literally emotional abuse, I’m not going to mince words here. My mother did this stuff regularly and never took ownership over the effect it had on me.
It’s been over 12 years since I’ve spoken to my mother because I realized through therapy that letting people who disrespect your feelings and boundaries isn’t something I have to do.
Pretending their very real feelings don’t matter does lead to damage. I was lucky enough to realize I needed help and had access to it, that doesn’t happen for everything.

My mom just minimizing my feelings and being nonchalant af about my distress was pretty damaging, even affects me now as a fully grown aduld woman in her 30s. Things that seem trivial aren't often trivial. It's frustrating that parents get more concerned with some kids movies being "too scary" more than the shit that's actually gonna affect them.

Governments need to do so much more when it comes to regulating internet content. Those huge social media companies aren't going to enforce their guidelines properly unless governments start holding them accountable for the kind of content they allow on their platforms. Something many people don't understand is that deplatforming is not silencing people. It's removing their ability to make money on content that violates basic human rights (content that goes against community guidelines). it's incredibly frustrating how little governments care about this or even know about it. The real world impact is very much real.

I think sometimes parents don’t get that things that wouldn’t make an adult cry are still devastating to children. It may be silly for an adult to cry about getting their hair sprayed for an uncomfortable amount of time, but kids are small. Their lives have been short and they’ve literally just not had these experienced these things before. If they cry and are upset about something that seems silly to you, it’s probably very serious to them and it should be treated as such.

My parents used to casually joke about divorce when I was a kid and I would get so upset they had to stop completely because guess what they had fucking empathy. Ok so here’s the thing, my dad actually used to make the same jokes when I was little. My parents would be playing with me or doing a puzzle and my dad would jokingly say “you know I’m not your real dad?” Or “you know you’re getting a new dad next week?” Or even things like “we’re going to sell you to the circus one day” and every single time I would get so upset and tear up but then my mom would hug me and tell me he’s just joking. This was when I was really little and gullible like 4 and 5. Eventually when I got older and understood it was a joke he stopped.
If you ask me, it didn’t have any affect on me whatsoever and my dad and I have a great relationship until this day. I’m not saying it was right but y’all can form your own opinions.
I think the difference here is that it wasn’t filmed for millions to see. They ARE exploiting their kids whether it’s intentional or not.

Family channels are so exploitative. These people use their children for money. They might claim creaye content to offer their children more than a regular job would sustain, but then can't you create content by yourself and not have the children as the focus? There are plenty of parent content creators that don't need to use their children in their videos, with the same benefits such as working from home, having more time for the kids and content creating money. Anyway, these people must be really uninteresting to resort to filming their kids crying rather than talking or doing literally anything themselves. Children cannot consent. The "anyone parents however they want" or "they are not YOUR children, it is not YOUR family" comments fall flat because this is why children get abused and exploited. Child abusers will also say "it is not your business what I do, don't interfere woth others' families". Absolute non sense. Even though it is not my family and I am not a parent, I have eyes and a brain 💀

These prank videos really piss me off because a lot of our anxieties form before we turn three and this is definitely affecting them. Like, regardless of whether or not the parents are kidding, the kids think it's real and react with real emotion. There are things that are seemingly harmless that can cause emotional damage; like, when I was a year old, my mom left me every day at a tiny apartment with a woman and her four kids bc my mom had to work and couldn't afford legit childcare, and I think that's where my attachment disorder developed. And this was my mom doing that out of necessity; imagine your parents regularly doing shit to make you cry on camera and then laughing about it 🙄

I want to point out to my family that the way that they treated us kids, and how they taught us to treat each other was not okay, I met with "at least you weren't beaten like we were when we were kids."
There's some people who should not be parents. There are some people who will continue to exploit those who are in their care and lack the empathy to change even after they have been taught better.

At some point all this lead to me getting to the point where I wouldn’t let myself be emotional. I had put up walls to never allow anyone to see me venerable or show any emotion I felt. This might lead to those kids being this way and it’s a very very heard cycle to break. I hopefully they get a environment that allows them to grow, rather than be put the down.

I feel so bad for the children because holy crap this is awful. No parent should “prank” their child like this. When the daughter started crying because she thought she was getting a new dad she clearly said “stop” meaning to stop filming. If I was a parent I would never ever do this to my kids and if I did I would have at least stopped filming when she became distressed. It’s really not that hard. I don’t see why they need to include some of these clips or why the videos of them crying always get views. It honestly sickens me that the parents are claiming to be good parents but yet they continue to film their children in distress and clearly don’t listen to them or their boundaries. I hope some action is taken and I really want people to stop watching or following these kinds of people/content.

Though not about family vlogging, I think this is worth sharing here:
I went to see a new horror movie called “X” last weekend, keep in mind this is a scary, gory, sexually explicit movie. As I walked in I noticed that 3 of the roughly 15 people in the theater were a young man, woman and their 2-3 year-old son in a stroller. I couldn’t believe it, they had the stroller facing the screen as the movie started. To the child’s credit he wasn’t making a fuss, talking or being distracting in any way for a while. Then there were jump scares, loud music stings, nudity and gore and the baby, still in the stroller watching the movie, started crying. The parents tried to shush him, but he was obviously distraught. Thank god they FINALLY had the decency to leave with him, but I couldn’t believe those parents would put their young child through that!
It’s really upsetting to see parents willfully ignore what could be severely negatively impacting their child psychologically.

I'm not even sure how legislation to protect kids from labor exploitation online would work, but that's what this is-- labor exploitation via emotional distress. It's disgusting and disturbing. I would not associate with people like this, and I'd make sure they knew why.

I know that this is a weird thing to focus on, but I just couldn't held but linger around the video title 'Our puppy got hit by a car.' It's almost been a year since my cat got hit and I still have trauma related to it. I get anxious when someone knocks on out front door too hard, watching my other cat still go outside is nerve racking. Down playing an animal's death in any way is just fucking disgusting.

children can’t comprehend and consent to things like that and it’s very unsettling to see parents film their children under distress and posting it on the internet for millions of people to see. the money and views and clout won’t mean anything in the long run when you exploit your kids. how you get money is how you lose it. nash grier is an excellent example of how family channels should be, he occasionally includes his child in his videos but his channel mainly focuses on him and his girlfriend. he does not shove a camera into his kid’s face all of the time just to get more views.

it's really stupid how people get so offended when you comment on their parenting. and i mean i get it, but in some cases like this YES these are bad parents, they're literally exploiting and using their kids for money by causing a ton of trauma to them.

I have such a disdain for family vlogs and utter disappointment for the parents who display their childrens' lives for profit. Much like child stars, these children are left without choice or the understanding as to why their parents pushed them into a having the financial burden of maintaining their upper class lifestyles, without even realizing it. By forcing a camera in front of their face and humiliating them for all to see. To everyone who thinks what the parents are doing is "okay" or "funny", how would (genuinely) feel if that was you? If your parents recorded you and splashed your tantrum online for all to see? What if your classmates saw it? What about your future partners? Your job opportunities? Your children? The impact is there forever, even if it is deleted. If the parents want to document their own lives, they should do it because they have the understanding of the implications of what posting to the internet entails. The children do not. Something needs to change.
