      Agree - not only no romance, but no sexual intimacy. Some women are very close with there female friends: they hug, they hold hands - think of it more like sisters. I believe the problem is a part of the LGBTQ community may misconstrue this type of closeness. Other heterosexual women that have not grown up around close female relationships may also not be able to relate to this type of dynamic. I sincerely do not believe Taylor is a part of the LGBTQ community, but is an ally. Not believing Taylor or taking her at her word, and continuously insinuating she's something she's stated she's not, takes her sense of agency and identity away. It's simply not cool and borders on harassment, bullying or abuse. I imagine it makes it awkward for her to feel normal within her relationships, it intrudes upon those relationships, and it makes it challenging for her to openly support the LGBTQ community in the way she would prefer. Sometimes folks, a beard is just a beard.

    You mention they want to be acknowledged and “seen” and represented by a queer pop star, but lesbian and bisexual female popstars already exist. So if that’s what they really care about, it’s weird to me they would obsess over outing a straight woman instead of supporting queer popstars that already exist. If that’s what matters to them. 🤷‍♀️ outing Taylor wouldn’t then mean there’s one lesbian/bisexual pop star. She would just be one of a community that already exists.

    • @biguattipoptropica
      @biguattipoptropica 4 месяца назад +40

      I don’t think they want *a* lesbian pop star. I think they want *the* lesbian pop star. A definitive star who is forced to represent the entire community at all times on the world stage. It makes sense that they’d try to fashion a white, thin, cis, conventionally attractive woman into their superstar because they see that as the “default”.

      I think they want someone who they already like to come out, so it's not just them wanting representation but their huge inner fan wanting it to be specific people. I also think they find it easier and more significant for it to be someone who they are already attached to, rather than a new musician they don't know or already have many positive feelings about.
      On a similar note I like K-pop and a lot of fans speculate that female idols are lesbian/bisexual. However the ones that get the most speculation are from the biggest most successful groups with the most fans, like Blackpink and Twice. Even if they don't even act gay (based on stereotypes but same sex flirting isn't taken as seriously as in the west) and they don't state things suggesting they are anything but straight, tbh it seems people finding them attractive is what makes people speculate!
      Even if smaller groups have female idols who literally include a lesbian love story in their music video, or who very carefully word things to be inclusive like saying "boyfriend or girlfriend" "future spouse" etc they get overlooked. Moonbyul explicitly wrote and created a song with music video about 2 women in love and having sex yet it barely got any attention and a lot of sapphic K-pop fans don't even know it exists.
      So yeah I think a lot of it is based on the usual illogical fan energy rather than a more grounded desire for representation. With an added mix of LGBQ people wanting the idol they find attractive to be the one who is not straight.

Gay men take up much of the space of media because they are seen as more subversive and gay men are easy to pander to as a market (straight women are included in this market.) But in both legal and social history, femme homosexuality has typically been always more “palatable.” Note this does not mean accepted because obviously gay femme relationships have their own dynamics and struggles in being acceptedz

    a big problem is lesbian/bi/generally WLW people finding her lyrics relatable to their queer relationships and deciding that this is definitive evidence that Taylor is gay. which... is delusional. if anything, songs about Taylor's feelings towards the men she has dated being able to be easily translated into queer contexts is a testament to her songwriting skills. love and heartbreak is a universal thing. Taylor puts it into words incredibly well.

      her sexuality is not our business, but you all seem to defend it very passionately. you are as obsessive as gaylors, a fanbase that represent a small pourcentage of the swifties so IF they are delusional, fine, but no need to go after them that way. what they do is harmless, and actually is a very thorough job of analysing songwriting, and songwriting is exactly the thing Taylor wants people to read.
      TS may not be queer but she leves enough space for the question to arise, and TS knows exactly how to construct her public image (and I'm not blaming her for this, in the contrary). The speculation is logical and I don't get why non gaylor fans are so mad about it.

    Taylor is an incredible songwriter and storyteller, especially when it comes to love. And love is a universal human experience. As a bisexual person who has loved women and men, it's not really that different of an experience (the love and intimacy part I mean, definitely not the societal judgment or homophobia parts, of course). That said... not everyone who is annoyed by Gaylors is homophobic. The Gaylors I see on Twitter barely like Taylor. More often than not, they're posting really passive aggressive tweets about how angry or disappointed they are with her for not yet coming out based on this or that misinterpreted Easter egg (no shade, I interpret Easter eggs wrong all the time lol). I don't mind seeing valid criticisms of Taylor as one of her fans, but I don't like to see her catch vitriol for speculation gone off the rails (or Karlie, for that matter, her Instagram comments horrified me!)
    Meanwhile, there are so many out and proud queer artists right now (one of my personal favorites is King Princess!) I just wish Gaylors didn't work themselves into an emotional frenzy over something they may not even be interpreting correctly. Plus, if your appreciation for an artist hinges on their sexuality alone, then you're really not a fan of them or their art. I understand wanting to see yourself reflected in artists you like, but it should not be a requirement. Also, I really do hate the take that only queer people would advocate for the LGBTQ community. Whenever I see that as "proof" that Taylor is gay, it hurts my heart a bit.

    Taylor Swift being considered a gay icon by some people in the LGBTQ+ community is really confusing to me. It makes me genuinely curious as to what we consider a gay icon regardless of their sexuality. Like Beyonce is not queer herself but a large majority of the queer community would consider her a queer icon. I dont think Taylor Swift is an icon that the queer community can agree is our icon, and I wonder why that is.

    • @biguattipoptropica
      @biguattipoptropica 4 месяца назад +5

      I think it’s because while a lot of gay icons embody a spirit gay people want to have or respect even if they don’t want it, not everyone agrees that Swift’s vibe is aspirational. Then again, Ariana Grande is also kinda divisive in that way so maybe it’s an age thing. Maybe we know too much about them to look up to them. Curious to hear more hypotheses.

    • @amapola9202
      @amapola9202 4 месяца назад +15

      This is interesting… I think a lot (if not all) of queer icons that are not queer themselves have some sort of component of defiance in the content they produce, they in some way defy and oppose certain status quo notions, even if in their personal lives they’re still pretty much agents of capitalism benefitting from it (someone like Lady Gaga or Beyoncé come to mind, they both have that edge of pushing certain boundaries in society while still being mega billionaires who likely are shielded from most of these limitations due to their power and influence. Of course they still can suffer from the status quo, but don’t have nearly as much limitations as regular people have) this is imo really important for the queer community to feel like they can relate to them, the lyrics might not mention anything about being queer, but the overall idea resonates. LGBTQ people also love someone who’s unapologetic about themselves, like divas. But in general, it seems like some resistance to conformity needs to exist within the product for the community to truly accept the artist. This is something I don’t see in Taylor swift’s whole image, she might have some songs where she sings about it (I wouldn’t know because I don’t like her music and don’t know much about her work) but her as a persona doesn’t embody those qualities. She’s “miss Americana”, the girl next door, the WASP blonde girl from a wealthy family who got famous for singing country songs about teenage boys. I know her image has changed over the years and turned into something different, but her overall image keeps popping as the very image of conformity to the status quo. Like, even those alt-right white supremacist groups where claiming her as their queen for a reason, which is not her fault, as far as I know she didn’t endorse them and they’re just delusional, but I think it speaks about her image in general if a bunch of people who stand against what the lgbtq community stands for are claiming her. Again, not exactly her fault, but she has carved out this persona for herself that, while I understand can be relatable and welcoming for a queer person, is also in so many ways the poster for heteronormativity.

      @@amapola9202Good points, I don't think Taylor is particularly brave or daring. Cher, Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Lady Gaga, they all were much more provocative on stage and quite outspoken in interviews, yet Taylor seems to play it much more safe.
      I mean it seemed to be a big deal for Taylor to decide to openly support lgbt people, and so controversial within her own team to hint at any politics. Other icons did that early in their careers and pushed whatever the norm was for that time and continued to push boundaries (personally I think having sex with Jesus was a step too far but you can't say they were playing it safe!) The other popstars also did it in a consistent manner that didn't feel calculated or shallow.

    Also, it’s 2024. It wouldn’t be shocking or controversial for a pop girl to come out as gay or bi. Most people wouldn’t bat an eye. Taylor just telling people to vote sent conservatives into a frenzy. She's way bigger than someone like Billie Eilish. Plus, Taylor has way more of a mainstream "look" and sound than Billie who has always had an "alternative" look and attracted a queer audience to begin with. Not to mention she has a reputation for dating around and writing breakup songs about men. It would absolutely be shocking.

    • @sennacookie5043
      @sennacookie5043 3 месяца назад +11

      If you have finished the video, hopefully you'll be able to see that there's many legitimate reasons for her to want to not speak up about her sexuality, but I really think that saying "it's 2024, it's no big deal" is a far too simple way of thinking.
      On top of the arguments made in the video:
      Taylor Swift's fanbase is not largely queer, it contains many many straight girls. And many straight women that claim to be allies, and that will fully support men in their queer identities, still have trouble with accepting queer women. I'm not saying that that's all of them of course, but speaking from personal experience as a queer woman, a lot of straight women can feel put off/threatened/uncomfortable because of queer women (while still being fine with people that are just strong allies). By coming out, Taylor could lose the trust of a lot of these fans. While I'm not trying to say that Taylor should cater to this audience, I definitely don't believe that it's true that her coming out wouldn't affect her status at all (especially when you take into consideration the conservative fans as well).
      But even if it were to not be a big deal to the world to have another queer popstar, Taylor is not just a pop star, but also a person. She has friends, family and plethora of interpersonal relationships that could be greatly affected if she came out. There's plenty of unfamous people that are closeted too; the general populus wouldn't bat an eye if George from Minnesota came out, but it WOULD affect their personal lives/personal circles. And we don't know everything about Taylor's personal life and what is safe/comfortable for her, so in this way coming out could be a very big deal as well

    • @annisha68

      I think Taylor would become a bigger target then she is now for the far right. They see her as a threat because she is so successful as a woman, but if she were to come out as queer that would be a stratospheric threat. As much as i would love her to come out, part of me would hope that she does not. I care about her as a person first and would not want to witness what would come her way if she did. Also her straight fans would feel absolutely betrayed.

This is just as harmful as any other speculation but never gets called out in the same way as when gaylors do it. We all know the "predatory gay" trope and I think it's important to consider that some of the (legit) criticism comes from (or is feeding into) this homo- and queerphobic trope rather than actually caring about Taylor's privacy (because it's not voiced in the same way when in concerns hetero relationships).

    Thanks for the objective analysis. I would also add a significant part of the speculation is due to her very short relationships with men for which she has written entire albums for. Harry Styles is a big one, where they dated for 3ish months yet we're supposed to believe the entirety of 1989 is about him. Not to mention all the songs about forbidden love, secret relationships and hiding... meanwhile she's calling the paps on herself when with these men. There is a dissonance there between her actions and the themes in her music.
    The moment I learned about "gaylor" I had an immediate aversion to it, probably because I like Dan and Phil too and always thought shipping them was creepy and invasive. However, one day I randomly stumbled upon a gaylor subreddit and checked it out out of curiosity. Now you can't convince me Taylor is straight, there's just too many coincidences for which there is no heterosexual explanation. Honestly I don't think it's the same. You can't compare billionaire Taylor Swift who will never see these gaylor theories and Dan and Phil who are very aware of every disgusting fanfic made of them. Not to mention gaylor isn't (for the most part) focused so much on shipping her with any of her alleged girlfriends as it is just theorizing that she likes women.
    Also, I'm not gay myself so I don't really care that much. I do feel bad for the queer Swifties who became really invested in it.

    The reason why Taylor is so popular in the first place is because she’s universally relatable. Her songwriting, her art, and her productions so great that a wide variety of people find themselves in her lyrics. So it’s easy to see why people will find queer themes in her music, whether or not that was Taylor’s intention. But I don’t think it’s up to us to speculate on Taylor’s sexuality.
    Just for an example, I’m autistic, and found so many of Taylor’s songs to be relatable to living with autism. Does that mean Taylor is autistic too? Probably not! It just means she’s a damn good songwriter who captures a wide array of experiences and I too can find myself in her songs!

    I totally thought that the Gaylors were insane and i identify as queer. However 3 nights ago i decided to do some deep diving into some forums that were run by Gaylors and i was shocked and horrified of the change in my thinking. The person that made this video really did not make a deep dive and only skimmed the surface. Taylor does drop certain phrases in songs that only queer people would know the meaning. Queer coding as they call it. Right where you left me there is a line about a hairpin drop. Normally you would just say you could hear a pin drop. Hairpin drop is queer coding. Hairpin drop in queer culture means sending signals to other queers that you are of that culture. There is so much more to that then i can mention here but if any of you here decide to do a deep dive you may be shocked. Some of the theories are reaching but some of them are so obvious to the queer gaze. I myself really do not want to have Taylor come out though. It would be so detrimental to her career. There are so many Taylor haters out there and this would just give them more ammunition. Btw i do think she is bi, i do not believe that Joe was a beard.

    If she was, I’d love that since I’m bisexual. But I won’t assume she is/isn’t since that’s not my place. I never thought too deeply into it until these two songs; “You need to calm down.” “ME!” Why? Because she released “ME!” On lesbian awareness day. And had bisexual colored hair in “You need to calm down.” She could just be representing the queer community, and not part of it too though. I think the biggest thing with people wanting her to be queer is that they want a chance with her since they have crushes on her. It’s not so much wanting her to be queer for the sake of being queer.

    This is absolute speculation, as I’m not a mega fan, but I have followed her, as a human, because I have kids who are fans. I’m an adult woman with autism, and I sometimes wonder if she’s a part of that tribe; an actual savant. If so, we often have a highly inflated sense of justice. I’m an ally for a ton of communities that I don’t belong to, because it’s the right thing to do. I think she just has huge empathy, and is trying to use her platform to responsibly affect change.

      They say women can’t possibly have deep relationship with men so they believe all her lyrics are from perspective of gay relationships. The narrator of this video conveniently leaves out the harmful rhetoric they pass around. They are all mostly nasty people who are probably hurt by people in their life, which is sad, but doesn’t mean Taylor is being locked away from her sexuality by the people in her life. And doesn’t mean they can attack everyone in her life as evil.

    Not a gaylor, but I'd like to remind this comment section that "gay" is not a dirty word. If someone says you are gay, even if you are not, your response shouldn't be vehement and you shouldn't act insulted. Some people's reactions are hysterical if you suggest a public personality could not be straight, and more often than not, this is rooted in homophobia. Nobody would be outraged if there was a theory stating Taylor likes dogs as much as cats, and has secretly owned dogs before. However, there is indignation when it is suggested she might like girls and has secretly dated some of them.

      I agree to a point. Try adding millions of not only inaccurate but relentless assertions of one's sexual identify despite opposing information. Over years and years, from millions and millions, so very publicly. I would imagine it begins to erode one's sense of agency and identify, and interfere with her relationships. So while I agree that it shouldn't be offensive on first ask/mention, it's understandable why one might eventually respond "vehemently" or feel "offended," when dealing with the magnitude of intrusive, inappropriate, accusatory speculation about a personal matter like she has. Repeatedly.

    Yes, I’ve become way too invested in the Gaylor theory, and I have a lot of time on my hands.
    Anyway,
    Lavender menace = lesbians
    Lavender marriage = gay
    Lavender scare = gay
    Lavender= associated with gay resistance
    “1950” = a gay song by King Princess about having to hide gayness in the 1950s.
    Taylor said she is a big fan of King Princess.
    Purple is just associated with a lot of gay things.
    Sappho is associated with violets.
    Maybe she was unaware of the association, but I highly doubt that. She is a brilliant woman.
    The Mad Men scene is about how the main guy loves BETTY.
    Taylor is named after James Taylor.
    Taylor wrote a love song for Betty, “From a man’s perspective” (James).
    Gaylors are just following the clues from a gay perspective.
    Maybe all of this is a coincidence.
    Taylor’s lyrics are always cryptic, and it is fun to decipher the easter eggs. Everyone has a right to their interpretation. That is the beauty of art.

    I just don't understand why we keep putting these people on pedestals and wanting to idolize them. Then when the real life isn't what we think it is we tear them apart. I think we need to focus more on what they contribute to the world and not their personal lives. It seems like we have a problem distinguishing them from parts they play and songs they write or sing. Just because we love something a part they played a song they made sang or wrote . That does not make them role models and we should quit trying to put them in that box they're just artists. That doesn't make them more than human we all make mistakes even them. If my life was out for everyone to make comments on I don't think I could take it. So I think we need to quit with all these expectations quit expecting them to be role models. Could you imagine everything you did everyone in the media would comment all of your fans would comment isn't it just enough pressure to make yourself. Aren't you supposed to use your younger years to figure out what it is that makes you happy?how about we just let them be artists and quit putting them on these pedestals and waiting for them to fall.

I think for some reason people want to stay in the closet for whatever reasons.. maybe they are pressured to by their management or told that their sales will suffer although I don't think they will.. It's not cool to out people I guess.. but it's also awesome when people are empowered to be their true selves and be an inspiration for others.. but I guess none of these people owe anyone anything and if they want to stay in the closet that's their choice.. to each their own.

    I really appreciate the thoughtfulness you put into this video. A lot of times when content creators critique gaylor theory, they start calling gaylors disgusting, perverted, etc. and it's just done with a lot if venom--so thank you for not doing that. This was a very well rounded video :)
    As a gaylor who mainly enjoys interpreting her lyrics through a queer lens, I think there are valid critiques and I don't think we should be pressuring anyone to come out or discussing someone's sexuality in graphic detail.
    What's funny is that I actually got into gaylor theory after I heard "betty" for the first time. I wasn't even on twitter, so I went to tik Tok (probably a few months later) to see if I was alone in my interpretation. I eventually found the gaylor community and now I enjoy people analyzing her lyrics (or honestly sometimes her street fashion lol) and learning more about Taylor Swift (as she presents herself), myself, and my community in the process. Most of us really don't mean any harm! Her current relationship with Travis seems to be bringing her a lot of joy, so I hope he makes her happy :)

    A lot of Taylor Swift songs like "Dress" and "I know places" are highly relatable to queer audiences and can definitely have a very strong queer meaning to people, but I don't think they necessarily imply anything about Taylor's sexual identity at all. She has written songs about having to hide away her relationships, having to find safe spaces, hiding things in plain sight and having to practice love in private; these are all thing that a lot of queer people experience, so it seems like it would make sense to draw the conclusion from that that Taylor is queer, especially in combination with her very strong recent allyship.
    But if Taylor were to be straight, I don't think it would be illogical/queerbaiting at all. Since the media is always very up in her business and her love life is so scrutinized, Taylor's love life starts to strongly resemble an unfamous queer person's love life (regardless of whether Taylor is queer or not); in both cases, both Taylor and your average queer person will have people delving into things that are not at all their personal business, and make a big deal out of something that for most people isn't an issue at all. Both Taylor and queer people face judgement, invasiveness and hate for living their romantic and sexual lives normally.
    I think this is why Taylor's songs can speak to queer people so strongly, since they're really going through something similar, but in a different kind of way. And Taylor's extreme allyship (though this is more speculatory) could also stem from this same phenomenon. If Taylor were to be straight, she might be able to have an "abnormal" amount of compassion/allyship for the LGBTQ+ community, because she partially understands what they go through.

Those photos with Karlie Kloss are the MOST genuine relationship photos I've ever seen of Taylor, and she looks more natural and happy in those photos. WHY do celebs hide their bi or gay side? Just be you. All that fame but still afraid to fully be themselves, a shame. On the flipside.. it's no one's business. However. When you're putting in EFFORT to hide it, I think that might be a problem.

    I'm sure if she was gay she would had let people know. Not everyone is gay in world doesn't matter how much you wish it. And you should respect that instead of trying to make her into one. Additionally she has to represent gays if she doesn't do that then they'll boycott all her future albums. Like what they did to hogwarts legacy because of Rowling views.

    As a "queer" and a "swiftie" (d tier tho) I use to just give the gaylors a small eye roll and not much more cause I assumed it was just a bunch of teenagers who liked Taylor and were being a bit too parasocial for sure but would grow out of it. I was horrified to learn adults, adults with the access to the nyts no less, believe this.

      Ha same I am not a swiftie but follow a lot of sapphic and musical content online, so I would see the occasional Gaylor on my timeline and roll my eyes and scroll on. But then I encountered a few grown adults who strongly believed in this conspiracy like as much as flat earthers. I went down a rabbit hole and was shocked at the imo actual delusional and mentally unwell people who dedicate a lot of their time so this theory and will get massively upset of you refuse to agree or even seem impartial.

    My best friend and I are both bisexual and Swifties (saw her in concert last year). I am adamantinely not a Gaylor, she is adamantinely a Gaylor. The way I see it, why would THE biggest pop star in the world not come out? She is so huge she could genuinely do whatever she wants. She does not need to do stunts and glimmers of things that would require layers of interpretation imo.
    Also, why be so defensive about a person you don't know and who clearly has chosen NOT to come out, if she were part of the community.

      SHe has based her whole career on liking boys. So many fans would feel very betrayed if she came outa and said all of that was lies. Also the conservative parties have her in their bulls eyes. They absolutely freaked out when she said she was democrat. I can only imagine she would be shot down if she came out. Plus if she came out she would also be bringing other people out just by association with her. She may be famous and powerful but if this was to come out it would be completely detrimental to her.

      @@lexshizumdot2115 tons of giant celebrities in the west are out! There really is no logical reason for her to leave all of these "hints" (which reads more like projection imo) and then skirt around the issue for years and years. Stars like Billie Eilish literally have songs about eating women out and they're just fine. Why put so much mental effort into a highly unlikely theory when we can instead be supporting artists who are open about who they are? It is a waste of energy.

    I don't understand why even after she's pretty much explicitly stated she's straight 1) the line in her song about people sexualising her female friendships which was an obvious condemmation of gaylors and 2) her team's response the the NYT article explicitly stating her discomfort at these speculations, 3) her statements at the time of release of Lover when she said she was an ally, not a part of the community ; even after all these public statements why fo people continue insisting she's been painstakingly fake dating men she isn't attracted to her entire life?
