  • As most of you know, Cattle Decapitation recently dropped 'Death Atlas', which is the first album to feature their new bassist Olivier Pinard. I figured, what better way to welcome him than to cover one of his new tracks? Here's 'Be Still Our Bleeding Hearts', one of my favourites off the album. Learned entirely by ear. Enjoy!
    Tuning: G# D# G# C# F# B

      @@LindenPoirier that's exactly what I was thinking while watching your video. It just sounds so much better when you have that tone. It does wonders for the track honestly. I hate when they bury the bass underneathe everything. Cannibal corpse has always been pretty good at keeping the bass prevalent in the mix, but I think it's because Alex Webster is one of the founding members

      No problem! And Yeah it is really interesting to hear him in a non tech death setting. Hes able to be kinda melodic, which is cool to hear. Shows his diversity a bit! And for sure his tone is nasty on it. He's part of the reason I wanted to invest in a darkglass pedal, his tone is out of this world good.

    Just curious, how do you usually learn these songs, do you just learn them by ear, have notebooks, or tabs or anything??

    • @LindenPoirier
      @LindenPoirier  4 года назад +2

      Good question! If a tab book/official tabs from the band exist then I'll just use those, but probably adjust fingerings slightly, etc. If there's an existing tab I'll use it to whatever extent I can while making changes to anything that sounds wrong. In most cases though, I'll write it out on guitar pro and then memorize it off the program, which usually takes hours of listening back to the song and sussing out parts. That way it's easy to keep track of everything and I've always got tabs to send out :)

    Do you know if they still use 1/2 down tuning on the bass with a Low G#
    Or if it is with a low A# now that Olivier has Joined instead?
    I'm asking because Derek played with a Low G#, as im sure you already know when he was still in the band :)
    Also would love tabs for this song, i would say my favorites from this album are One Step Closer to the End of the World and The Title Track
    Allthough to be honest the whole album is amazing :)
    I'm jealous of how you make every cover look so easy Linden haha, out of curiousity how long did it take for you to learn this song? :)
    Also would love to see some more Canadian tech Death covers, Canada represent haha :)
    Cheers :)

    • @LindenPoirier
      @LindenPoirier  4 года назад +3

      Thanks man! I didn't bother asking Oli when I spoke to him, but Dave Otero on one of his videos said he thinks he's in Eb standard "with a low A string" , which I took to mean either just A or G#, since it's all flat. The low notes in the groove-the only section, according to Oli, that used the low string-sounded good as open G#s, so I just went with that haha.
      As for how long it took, I started learning the song on the 30th and recorded it on the 6th, plus about 2 of those days were tabbing it. I find the whole process pretty interconnected bc I'm always testing out fingerings and whatnot as I go, and by the time I'm done tabbing the song out by ear I've usually got it memorized, so I can't give too specific a figure. Death Atlas was pretty sick imo, although a bit long at the end to cover; I'd probably do Time's Cruel Curtain next. Never got into the first singles much although they are very catchy.
      Definitely planning on doing one more Archspire cover though, and hopefully some more really techy stuff in the new year :)

      @@LindenPoirier Ah i see, well it's probably tuned to G# D# G# C# F# then :)
      BTW i'm guessing you are quite good at figuring tunings and such by ear? there is a band i listen to called Desecravity From Japan
      They have huge Dying Fetus influences, you should check them out if you hav'nt ,i think you would like them :)
      Was basically asking them on Facebook what tuning they use, but for some reason they did'nt want to say what tuning they use, don't really know why haha.
      ruclips.net/video/Do9e3Hueovg/видео.html
      There is a link to a bass playthrough they did if you would'nt mind checking it out, :)
      i think they might tune to C#, but im not 100% sure
      Not sure if you are familiar with Inferi also, but would love to see you cover some of their bass stuff,
      they got a bass/guitar tab book of their latest album, Revenant
      Also, were you oki with sending the bass tab for this song : )
      Wish you the best for the next year pal, hope your channel grows more and more, you deserve it

      @@mackaus1 Desecravity are sick! It's strange they don't wanna tell anyone what tuning they use. Based on the start of the video I think they're in C standard. And yeah, definitely familiar with Inferi, have considered doing a cover of one of their songs. Their bassist Andrew is a beast, really chill guy too.
      Cheers man, have a great new year and thanks for all the support! I'll send you that tab right away :)

    • @mackaus1
      @mackaus1 4 года назад +1

      Yeah Andrew seems like a really nice and funny guy, amazing bass player. i like his catchphrase, this brings me great pleasure haha :)
      regarding the reason they don't want to answer what tuning they use, they basically said to me on facebook that
      they get a thousand questions everyday about what gear they use, how do you play this part, what tuning do you guys use etc, so i guess they are just tired of answering the same questions over and over...
      But Thanks to you for the tuning info about desecravity, i will experiment around with it abit with my bass at home, and see if C standard sounds right, thanks again Linden :)
      BTW, have you heard the new Viraemia song Glioblastoma? it's got some sick basslines, i think
      Ollie Morgan their new bassist plays it on a 7-string bass, Scott Plummer their original bass player commited suicide earlier this year, which is such a huge loss to the scene :( he was one of my biggest inspirations and i really looked up to him) but maybe it can be transposed to a 6-string bass :)

    • @LindenPoirier
      @LindenPoirier  4 года назад +2

      @@mackaus1 Yeah, I guess that makes sense, although if they bothered to reply saying that they also could've written "C standard" or w/e pretty quickly. And no problem, happy to help!
      I did hear the new song but it didn't do a lot for me. Like, it was cool, but I still prefer the sound of their original release rn. On the bright side though, I've got a couple Viraemia songs in the works that are coming along slowly, probably be out mid-2020, depending how much other stuff takes priority. And yes they would definitely be a lot easier on a 7-string hahaha

      Just did! Some of 'em, anyway. They're definitely ambitious! It'd be cool to hear the bass a little clearer in the mix though, like either a bit louder or with more high end to the tone. Pretty good heel-toe in that Rings of Saturn drum cover btw!
