My mk7 R is manual and i love it, had it for a few years now. Just feels right.
Manuals are for drivers who refuse to give up the fun of driving. Any kind of automatic, no mater how brilliant, takes involvement away from the driver.
Very true and I totally regret getting a DSG 😂 I don’t care how many races I win and yes it shifts stupid fast but I miss my third pedal 😣
@@MrMichael3905 no just no dsg all the way
@@Mo_R9Nope. Never.
all the DSG guys: BuT YoU gET 4.1sEC 0-62 WitH DsG!
The reason I choose my MK 7.5 Golf R in manual was for more fun factor it has. I already have a fast Auto, but wanted a sporty manual I could daily and have fun with. The R in a 6spd was my answer. Ive driven a mk7 DSG GTI before and it shifts fast, but wasn’t exciting to me. I didn’t really like the DSG farts either lol. The DSG will always be faster. The manual is much more fun. Might get a DSG in the future though!
Just wish VW put a stronger clutch in it. Lol I have been holding off on getting a tune, DP, and intercooler until I need to upgrade my clutch. Just have minor bolt ons for now.
Keep up the good work!
BlackandYellowCamaro that’s fair enough I suppose you have the best of both👌🏻 yeah that’s what I can’t understand why didn’t they put a better clutch in😫 I get you I’ll be joining you sooner or later and Thankyou🙌🏻
Lol DSG farts...I'm not a fan either. I like the pops and crackles all the way.
I prefer manual, even in NY traffic.
e val79 that’s a strong comment💪🏻
You just sold me with this comment
I actually have always preferred manual cars in heavy traffic.
I’m manual all the way, but the DSG in manual mode on twisty mountain roads is poetry in motion. You just have to learn the gears.
futball24 I like that that’s a good comment👍🏻
Manual any day. It’s simply more fun, for reasons like being able to heel toe brake into a corner and power out in second, knowing that you did all that. I don’t care if an automatic gear box can do it better and faster. Im in it for the added experience of being more in touch with the car and the reward of being able to drive fast without assistance. I double clutch shift on the highway just for fun. Might be the young and reckless thing I’m going through atm 🤷🏾♂️
10 minutes of listening to someone say Manuel 🤷🏻♂️
😅🥸
I bought a golf r7.5 manual love it down the twisty Norfolk roads, reminds me of my vr6 back in the day
Don’t think the new mic is working that’s what I get for buying an eBay mic and adapter😂 videos from now on will be recorded with the cannon🙌🏻
They aren't mic friendly mine works fine in every car I drive but in the R it picks up tyre roar and the soundakor device!
Test Drive Scotland Thanks for letting me know it’s a nightmare😫
I have had an 08 Gti APR stage 2+ on a stock clutch, it started slipping because of lack of power on the clutch but not lack durability itself. If I ran it easy or mild on the roads it was good, and increased on the highways it was fine, at track with hard pulls it just slipped. I sold it before getting my next mod. Loved it from new in 2008 to 2012. If I went the journey again I would still get the manual, it gives you more freedom and control.
Totally agree with you. A drivers car should have a manual. Great video!
No videos No videos Thankyou🙏🏻
Manual well better ino no man could ever change as quick as a dsg but ye can really drive a manual
I have. 2017 manual Golf R. Wouldn’t buy one if I could t get it in manual. It’s much more engaging way to drive, in my opinion.
Nick Foster That’s true it’s so engaging and fun to drive🙌🏻
All hot hatches should be manual, dsg takes the fun out of driving and I've always saw it as a lazy option
SabretoothSnail a few years ago you’d buy a hot hatch for a manual and fun and a big cruiser for comfort and auto
Shouls i get manaul then cause i wanna go hella fast auto faster but abouy the driver. Am get manual golf r when have money buy it
im debating which golf to get. im thinking money to value the mk7.5 golf r would be best around 27k price used a 2019 with the 7 speed dsg and leg lights. i drive a manual tt 225 but im thinking ill regret not getting the dsg with the golf r but. i have seen a few manual for sale i thought about buying idk what to do lol
I have a Mk6 GTI, with a stick, as my daily. If I can. I want to keep that car. And get a Mk7 Golf R with a DSG. My reasoning is that I want to modify the Golf R. There gets to a point, in power, where driving a manual becomes a pain because of the heavy clutch. Especially in traffic. Also, if you fuck up a shift, with high power, there go your thrust bearings $$$$$ Even my VW mechanic (and he loves manuals) said to never doubt the DSG. Each transmission has their pros and cons. I have driven a DSG. And Holy shit are they awesome! It all just depends on what you are looking for.
For me, I regretted not getting an R. But I do love my dsg gti
Can see why you love the GTi- cracking car!
Mark7 GTI I agree with Steve Lane 👍🏻
Pretty good with the stick VG. I have a manual R and its great
Who’s Manuel.. And where do I buy him?
My 2016 mk7 gti is manual. It sucks when you’re trying to grab your girls hand, other than that it’s fine with it, besides for some reason I trust a stick shift more than an automatic transmission
rzorNvme haha yeah I’d rather grab my shift knob!
rzorNvme you gotta shift with her hand while you’re holding it, my ex found it fun every time I’d do it
I have a mk7.5 dsg my biggest issue is when you have the car in manual if you plant it the car still downshifts if you could be in a lower gear but its not always what you want sometimes.
I have the same car.. Also the same problem😔. Just don't feel in full control with the dsg. But trafic jams make up for it. 😂
@@Steveh1066 I suppose there's no such thing as a perfect car must admit manual would be cool for that being in 100% control
Alex Toon Thanks fit letting me know about a DSG issue and saying in a manual you have full control
Most people say “you have full control in DSG it has paddles”
I couldn’t agree with you more thanks for the info👍🏻
don't hit the kickdown button there is a button right at the bottom of the pedal when you floor it. If you stop right at that button it won't downshift. Also I heard holding the right paddle will keep it in gear as well. Basically the kickdown button is made if you are in an emergency and want to go from 6th to 3rd fast for example.
I believe manual gearbox didnt have mechatronic isn it? Which all golf driver afraid of when broken
I have a manual Golf 7R and a manual Golf 7 GTI. And hell yes .... the manual transmission is so much fun for driving these cars, that I won't ever miss a DSG. I've driven sporty DSG Golf's for my personal experience. But its boring. It's to much perfect and that makes it boring.
I hope Golf 8R will be available with manual transmission again. Please Volkswagen!!!!!
Currently driving an 18 R in traffic every day with no issues.. plus can’t stand the DSG farts 💨..
I've got a DSG and can't stand the farts either. Worst thing about the car.
BuildingNumber Seven you do have a point it’s not that bad in traffic
Charles M your the first person I’ve seen to say that😂 I like your honesty🙏🏻
Watching this three years and when you said 20k I smiled a tear came to my eye.
Have the mk8 R, got it at msrp.
It’s a manual which is super exciting and fun. Only have a few bits on it until people start blowing engines chasing 500hp 😆 but I drove the R Dsg and the Gti Dsg. I was bored besides the torque vectoring in the R.
With confirmation coming out that the mk9 will be hybrid the decision was easy for me.
When the time comes, I’m thinking of doing the rs3 swap which will be expensive but having that engine in a manual will be one of one 🙌🏼
Manual all the way. DSG is fine for cruising BUT from a drivers point of view a manual is far better
gingerbread man that’s what I was thinking surly you can’t beat a manual for fun🤷🏻♀️
Or you can slip the DSG into manual and use the paddles....?
Charles M nope, still does compare. And yes Iv owner DSG cars and BMW’s with zf8 speeds. Manuals are mikes better
@@thatsjustme1990 Miles better at what (from a drivers' point of view of course)? That is of course disregarding that most driving involves sitting in traffic or trundling along in a queue.
Charles M most of my driving is not stuck in traffic, it’s mostly country lanes etc and the occasional track use. I find manuals more engaging and feel more in control on twistys. I just pref manuals I’m not a great fan of the DSG I find it selects wrong gears where I need them, that said my current car has the zf8 speed( no manual option available) which is the best auto if driven by far. I’d still have a manual is it was an option tho
I think the mic is fine. But a yeah. Manual. Baby. So my girlfriend can’t drive it and scuff my rims and tires against the curb. Lol. I love my manual.
Thomas Sabol Thanks for the feedback👍🏻
Hahahahahaha wow same
What clutch are you upgrading to? And how is it on daily driving? Cheers bro
I had a Sachs Sintered Clutch it was great good feel and fine for daily driving
@@jamesr50 thanks mate
I will only buy a new car with lazy automatic (DSG) when I am too old to use my legs.
DSG will always cost more people who say well once you tune it you need a clutch and you have to factor that well yeah you do but if you have a DSG you have the extra cost of a DSG tune plus the extra cost of the DSG right of the bat. So that would more than dove the cost of a better clutch
Is the OEM clutch bad, or are the ones that need replacing down to bad driving?
Honest they are all bad mine started slipping after 30k miles eventually they all need replacing I thing they can’t handle the stock Golf R power
@@jamesr50 I've just bought a mk7.5 that had a new clutch before I got it. I'm hoping to look after it so the new one lasts longer.
Your mics good, the cars just to loud haha. That noise would do. My Head in bro 😂😂
Have u got the new APR update, version 2.6 flashes on your car yet? Tried out if launch control is quicker ??
Antony V I haven’t I did ask about and I got told because it’s manual it’s not worth more than a 20min drive to the tuner because the difference is minimal, if it was DSG it would be a well worth it
I've driven an 09 dsg edition 30.. couldn't wait for the down shift going into a corner.. I bought a manual S3 8p but you're bang on, she's my wet day b road blaster not a green light tart😂. I spent the extra on killing the under steer (arb's, poly bushes and geometry setup).
P.s cannot wait to come on tour to Wales (motorbike) in a few months.
paul jones nice to know and that’s awesome🙌🏻
Mine is my daily so chose DSG but I'd rather have a manual when I'm out enjoying it, just a shame they used the GTI can in it!
Test Drive Scotland Thanks for the info👍🏻
Price meant nothing as it was only a small difference. I had to get a manual living in a mountainous region mixed with overcrowded motorways.
I've always driven manuals & got a DSG S3 & definitely still prefer a manual. The DSG as good as it is, is just not engaging & still a boring auto for me
I get my evo back from indigo gt in the next couple of weeks fella, we are going to have to meet up I'm only from Tonypandy, I had a black 335i last time we spoke 😉
mr cartaz awesome sounds good see you on the road sometime👌🏻👍🏻
If manual was more money even by £4K. I’d still pick it over dsg.
Could you recommend a clutch for a golf r daily mate?
My Sachs sintered clutch was great but you may find it a little stiff for a daily so go for the Sachs Organic Clutch👍🏻😄
@@jamesr50 cheers for the reply I’ll try that!
What a din from the exhaust. That would drive me nuts.
So you love the manual golf 4
Honestly if I have to buy manual, I will go for an STI :) Golf in my opinion should be DSG! Depends on your preferences ... i moved from subaru world to VW for not driving a manual car.
Don abdo that’s fair enough I can see you point😄
Your car is very loud dude - how do you put up with that as a daily?
ScotchEgg it has a valved exhaust system I can close them
Can anyone please help me on what clutch to go for if I'm only going stage 1 Apr?
A manual Golf R is boring imo. It wasn’t designed to be paired with a manual box, the DSG is just better in so many ways. That’s one of the main reasons why VW are no longer building manuals, no demand.
I love a manual box, but on the right car. A Porsche 911 for example.
Emissions and cost savings imo not demand.
Dsg farts are lame.
do you have a single fly wheel?
Jürgen Golak I’m using the stock flywheel I think it’s dual mass
is your clutch heavy to press compared to the stock one?@@jamesr50
Jürgen Golak it has a nice weight to it the clutch pedal has a helper spring on it
If you removed that it would be solid
Thanks for the effort of trying to improve the audio quality. Even if it isnt working yet xD. I have an MK7.5 Golf GTI Performance with DSG. And I wouldnt change it for a manual. I do a lot more daily commutes and motorway trips than I do mountain cornering for example. And for that use, DSG has no match. Im 36 and maybe Im getting old, dunno. But I have friends with the same car with manual gearbox and they dont want DSG. So you have a choice, for now. Negatives with DSG. The car is more expensive. Every 60.000km you have to change the gearbox oil, something you dont have to do with the manual. And some people have had reliability issues, although not so much on these latest ones I dont think. But to me, the possitives outrun the negatives by far.
reset1101 Thanks for letting me know I appreciate it👍🏻 I agree it’s all down to personal preference, I had a manual because of the cost but I’ll be making the move from manual to DSG some time🙌🏻
Hi James, I live in Treorchy and see u loads and loads cos of the tyre shop u have near me would love to meet u one day
I like my DSG. I have my MK2 for if I'm in the mood for Manual.
Brian Borkowski that’s fair good choice🙌🏻
Brian bedontay
and as u said, depends on where u live and if it is ur daily car and many other preferences
Hey there Jamesr50. The lapel mic does make a difference to making you more audible. I agree that manual is a driver's car and to your point, living in a crowded city a DSG is the way to go.
DSG can't make those pops and bangs, can it? Those pops bangs and exhaust burbles are in the domain of manual only I think.
Another thing, I notice you shift a bit quickly? Do you wait for the engine rpm to climb to e.g. 2500 rpm and then shift up? In my diesel Jetta with DSG if I switch to the tiptronic gate I wait for every shift to climb to at least 2 k (my 2L diesel engine lumbers and redlines at 5k rpm) and then I upshift.
Great video. I myself graduated to a DSG from a manual car and do remember the good times I had with the previous manual.
Edit: I do prefer the DSG now. Apart from convenience if it use the paddles it's amazing for me at least.
Kaizer Billimoria yes the DSG can have the pops and bangs it requires APR stage 2,
I shift up when the car wants me to it tells me on the dash and engine noise and Thanks for your comment I appreciate it👍🏻
Everyone just follows the crowd now I think , same with phone everyone's got to get the newest thing out, there's multiple reasons I prefer manual 1 its keeping the classic feel to driving thats been around for years thats slowly dying out in new cars 90's /early 2000's manual cars give the best driving experience by far, like you say your more involved in the drive, a 13 year old child could learn to drive a car on forza with a steering wheel and pedals and flappy paddles and then translate it to a real car , manual takes alot more skill , is alot harder and alot of people just can't even get the hang of how to change gear in a manual and the clutch confuses their mind. So a dsg changes gear for you, youve less control over the car it does it for you , it changes gear a little faster yeah? But its not worth the drivers feel you loose for it in dsg's and omg dsg farts sound so gay like horrific but yeah who cares about a split second gear change speed when your dailying your car on a public road? Either way it takes a hell of alot more skill to drive a manual than a dsg as a first time driver or a long time driver so ill hold my hands up and say im proud to drive manual , and ill keep driving manuals for as long as I can , way to easy to drive a dsg and to boring , ny old cars have been evo 8 wrx still 2004 , Toyota glanza 250 bhp and I can tell u my manual golf is already boring enough and lacks drivers feel im comparison and thats with out my car being a dsg lol won't be long until years down the line people do their test in a dsg and then see a manual car and look at it snd ask the driver " what the hell is this , how does this work , that looks so confusing man" and that days gonna be sad
Shiuld got manual or auto
How fast have you driven her on a motorway?
vincent the chin 70mph 😂
Who's manuel?
or........you could do both! - DSG + remap FTW :D - but yeah if money is a limiting factor and you don't mind manual, then go with manual - but be aware the stock clutch is pants as you say.
Although if buying new or near new you wanna pay the extra for DSG, as you've found out they hold a premium come resale.
Me? - i'm too lazy for manual nowadays, had DSG car's for over 10 years and there is no going back.
blower you do have a point and that’s why I had a manual because of cost and I totally agree I’ll be going DSG sooner or later🙌🏻
What exhaust
Dsg for me it’s an auto and can put it in manual if you want and you get paddles on steering wheel 👌🏻👍🏻 but yeah see what you say about the money saved for tuning
Si Bon alot go for manual just because of the price I did and I’ll openly tell people it’s just one of those things I suppose🙌🏻
Actually its cheaper to tune the dsg to stage 1! At least u don't have to upgrade the chocolate clutch on the manual!
Did he say manwal 😂
LOL @ lego hair
I don't, and I'm 60k into mine.
LOL im in california and bought a pre owned 16 R then got a stage 1 APR tune wider wheels and 2 michelin pilot sport 4s and have been mopping up!!
manual btw too!
Those seat covers don't look like they fit properly :D you come back from work dirty ?
Mr Studio they fit pretty good I haven’t pulled them down all the way, they keep blowing off if I have the window open and yep I need the covers😂
k son robadoS los asientos? por eso los tapas? ajja
Nope…
DSG for life!!!
Sorry mate but I disagree. Having a manual opposed to the dsg is like having a gti over the R. In your heart of hearts you regret it besides dsg holds value way better. If you want a manual drivers car get a wrx sti hawkeye. Cheers
I’d regret buying a manual
Personally, I prefer the DSG,
How often to you hit the track? Drive many miles in a manual?
Dsg all the way
Yeah if you're a boring, lazy driver 😂
SabretoothSnail not really owned manual subarus, evos, got a dsg s3 now and its best of both worlds so
I regret getting DSG, so much less engaging.
DSG > poopy manual
7even GTI The golf R was designed around the dsg it makes no sense to get the chocolate box In a golf r
L comment typical 17 year old praising DSG farts
First :D
Of course you regret buying the slower option...
The mistake is buying a golf in the first place !
You are a mistake
