Hey guys! My apologies for the lack of videos over this past week, I planned to film more videos when I was in Paris but that, obviously, didn’t go to plan! Either way, welcome back to another video where I talk through some tips & tricks on buying a Golf R. I don't do a lot of town driving and the manual box is a more engaging driving experience - it's a pretty "slick" shift too (like loading a rifle). If you have children buy the leather. If your worried about your car being stolen buy the manual transmission because in North America millennial car thieves don't know how to drive stick.
Gilang Pratama No its reality in North America. It’s almost impossible to sell a car now with a manual & recent stats showed they where the least likely to be stolen.
I'm on the cusp of buying a 7.5 Golf R. I'll be getting keyless entry and go! In fact, 2020MY Golf R's no longer come with turn key ignition! My current car has keyless entry and start and there's no way i'll be going back to turn key. If you're worried about security buy a steering wheel lock and also Autowatch Ghost which runs completely separately from the cars factory immobiliser. All it takes is a bit of research and a few additional £££.
Join the UK VWROC forum, all thefts reported on there are via a house break in, not keyless. Also ask yourself this....if low life want your car do you want them breaking in, searching your house or would you prefer they just took it with no fuss? For me with kids in the house I'd prefer the latter.
NP 46 as an american it boggles my mind you guys have to deal with and worry about this sorta thing happening. i can’t say i’ve ever heard of a car being stolen that way ever over here. not to say it never happens at all but still.
NP 46 agreed lot of people think having keys hidden with them upstairs is better but that just results in a confrontation with the thieves. if they want it they will try their upmost to get it. keep your family safe, fuck the car
Just throwing my hat in this. You voiced a lot of opinions, and most of them I agree with somewhat. However, I think your opinion on the theft of a Golf R is a bit of a mute point. From more of a factual basis, as someone that has worked on underlying keyless ignition technology. All keyless go technology has the same basic problem which is the wireless side. Thieves use a signal relay device to capture the key signal and re-transmit it to your car. The relay is two way, so that your key can communicate with the car and visa versa. This is a problem with ALL keyless ignition cars, not just the Golf R. The VW system is no less, or more secure than (for example) the Maserati keyless system or the Kia Keyless system. They don't "hack" into the system like you see from CSI or star trek or whatever. They just trick the car into thinking the key is there. Statistically, the Golf R is no as desirable to thieves as the Audi RS 3 or the Mercedes AMG A65. If you look up theft statistics in London, The Golf R is something like 9th 0r 10th. Where as the Audi, Mercedes and BMW equivalents are all in the top 5. What all in the top 10 have in common is the keyless ignition. Strictly speaking, you're more at risk if you own a Chelsea Tractor with keyless ignition. As someone else pointed out, a lot of the thefts actually focus on the keyed ignition models. The relay technology is still fairly expensive, hard to prepare for and you don't need to be too clever to break a window and steal a key from someone's front door. The relay technology isn't so simple or easy. Just some food for thought on the keyless ignition and car crime statistics.
I owned a 2017 Golf R from new, had to get rid of it after a year because of the number of attempted thefts! (I live in the back corner of a cul de sac in a quiet area) They are targeted by thieves, ask any police officer what cars organised crime gangs go for and they'll tell you Golf Rs are the flavour of the month! Nothing to do with the keyless entry system, you've got 5 guys wearing ski masks welding knives/crowbars breaking in to your home in the early hours! When buying something like this, factor in composite doors for the front and back of your house, a bollard for the end of your drive and perhaps a CCTV system! The composite doors at my house are what saved my car! Shame I had to return it to the dealer, awesome car otherwise!
Niall I’ve had the opposite experience and heard the opposite from Police. I owned a 2014 Golf for 3 years and I lived in 3 different cities in that time. Including London. I’ve hear from police that the Audi RS series are more desirable. The golf R is also in a lower insurance band than the Audi’s, BMW’s, fords and Honda which suggests that they’re less prone to insurance claims (for a multitude of reasons) over their competitors.
Got a 15 plate Mk7 R manual. Drove a 12 plate GT TDI DSG before. The manual is a far better drive than the DSG. But, once out of das welt warranty, getting an APR Stage 1 remap plus upgraded induction kit. Hopefully will push 370bhp plus a lot more torque. Golf R is the best car I have ever bought and extremely fun to drive.
Love the videos. Bought my golf r 7.5 three weeks ago. Five months old love the car. I was planning on buying a new one but the waiting time is ridiculous. The dsg is fab lapis blue stunning colour with upgraded alloys sunroof and rear view camera. Interesting discussion on the keyless entry avoid on any make models like the plague in my opinion thieves love them. Even my wife drives the car so versatile. Can’t wait for the next video.
Ive got a 7.5R Wolfsburg edition with Keyless entry and dsg now apr tuned, after owning and driving A45, C63, RS3, R32 & M3 6cyl its by far the best all round car i have owned unbelievable performance especially now with apr tuning but keeps its drivability and kills 95% of cars and bikes on the road. FUN!
@@hampshirephoto All have their great points but personally i found the RS3 to jerky even new and one with 20,000 ks exactly the same my mother owns the C63 now great car love the noise but rear wheel drive it gets killed by my R off the line and chews 5k of tyres every 4 months, my A45 look likes your 14yo ...Just find the R gives you the best of everything unless your in the very small % that want a track car
Love the look of the golf R. Feel the seats whether they’re leather or cloth really let the car down. Not sure why they don’t have buckets like the previous r32?!
Nice video. Totally agree with keyless entry and full leather being unnecessary. I bought a 2.5 year old Mk7 DSG to replace a M135. Running costs are higher, don't forget Haldex and DSG service and with fuel economy if u drive very efficiently 380 miles on 98RON. The only thing I miss is 7th gear on the motorway compared to 7.5
@@BalkanBoyBiH fraid so!. Put on 60k miles with m135i (new at time) and then bought a mk 7 golf R 2015 second hand (20k miles). The BMW is more of an event to drive, nicer sound, sit lower, handling can be livelier. I found the R better handling especially in UK conditions. I'll probably buy an Akrapovic exhaust.
I bought a 7,5 Golf R. I literally ticked every option box. When I’d finished it cost 40k. If I did it again I’d defo not go so mad. The things I hate is that they charge you for leather int. rev cam. Good stereo. These should be included. It’s shocking.
A good video and all points raised I followed in buying my Golf GTE. Yes I know it's only a available DSG and it's a GTE not an R but all other options are available on the GTE. Also bought mine used with 3.5k on the clock and better than list price when you could get them. Anyone wanting a fun and interesting experience try a Plug In Hybrid 🤔
Nice car! Shame there are too many on the road so you see so many every day. Weird how with the Mk6 nobody bought the R and now with the MK7 theres more of them than GTi’s😂
Please don't relax about theft just because you didn't get keyless start. These theives use transmitters to get in the car, not to start it and drive it away. Once they are in, they break the steering lock and wire the car. That will work on any car - even your car - if you have a key button that unlocks the car (instead of putting the key into the door lock). With the keyless start cars, the key must remain "in proximity" for the car to be successfully driven. That's why they again break the steering lock and wire those cars also.
Obmot58 P completely agree S3 on paper very similar but would love to see the stats in a video like this to compare ? Again the difference between the Golf and the RS3 I would hope would be huge as the price difference is massive but be interesting to see if the RS3 is really worth all those extra pennies? The one I’m more interested in is the civic type R because very very similar prices .....
Keyless Access - You can turn off this function by using close button on key and then fast locking car again by touching door handle again. Go away from the range of sensor for 10 seconds and you shouldnt be able to unlock the car with Keyless Access but just with the unlock button on key. That works at least for european cars.
Ah mate this is nuts: I aint got keyless entry. You don't want that it'll get nicked. I've got dsg. You'll defo need that. I've got a 7.5. Yeah much better tach... Much better. Where's the pros and cons? You're just justifying the spec that Daddy bought you. Sorry to be harsh but just the way it is
@@Danny_Transition_Patrol me, jealous? No! don't even like cars. I wouldn't need anyone to buy me one mind you, I work hard so can afford to buy things for myself.
Nick Palmer actually no, I instantly recognised the hate in your comment because your dad didn’t buy you a 35k car. Sorry to be harsch but some people can afford it like you can afford a coffee in the morning. That’s the way it is for some ! And I am not jealous
@@TheSomeoone well Daddy doesn't have to buy me a 35k car as I can afford to buy myself one. So why in the hell would I be jealous. Just simply pointing out fact. Now run along and get back to your video games like a good boy
I always thought the same with buying new, that you loose a load of money the moment you drive it off the forecourt - compared to buying something a few months old. However with the deals out there to be had, and if you are savvy its no longer really the case. On the Golf R you can get 12% off with drive the deal, if you also take out the PCP and then just pay it off straight away (assuming you can financially do so) then you also get another £1500 off via dealer contribution. When you add all that up you do find its pretty close to what you can buy 2nd hand but near new for. I originally did this, but cancelled my order once i learnt about the WLTP spec changes, and paid a premium to get a car to my spec (well better than it) and also be pre-WLTP and not have the particulate filterm along with dual injection - which has been dropped on the 2019 models, leading to carbon build up problems down the road.
I've just put a deposit on an S3. Any chance you could maybe do a comparison video between the golf r and s3? A kind of is it worth the extra money type of thing.
nathan ogrady I have driven and lived with both. Can easily say the s3 is not worth the extra money, if anything it should be cheaper lol. The suspension, steering, handling and even launch control in the Golf R is much better then the Audi!
I have the Keyless Access on the GTI Clubsport you see on my channel! - If you have Keyless Acess just put the keys in a box with Metal Housing when u go to sleep at nights! It will bounce of the signals and make hacking alot more troublesome! ;)
I have been reading that if you shut off your car in race that when you turn it back on that the mode will say race but the engine exhaust and throttle response reverts back to comfort. You then have to cycle through the drive select and re select race to get the entire car back functioning as the true race . Is this something you have heard before ?
Keyless go argument is BS. Have it and no issue. Live in North America, I recommend others do their research before taking this guys opinion. Full leather/vinyl interior is much easier to maintain and clean. How is it not fitting for VW’s flagship premium hot hatch? DSG is faster and can handle more power if you ever want to tune. Def go for 7.5. Bigger infotainment screen and a virtual cockpit. Agree on buying used car. Bought new and regret it.
It always amazes me how much of a problem auto theft is in europe. Leather is the only option here in the states. DSG in the R is really uncommon here as well which is annoying since its the better option.
Bro. Love the videos.i plan on getting a Golf R in the near future. Might even wait till next year for the MK8. Anyways, your videos are amazingly informative and have been exactly what I'm looking for so thank you for being here.
With the exception to the point about the mk 7.5 vs the mk7 point I would personally do the exact opposite of everything you suggested. Even as far as that goes I think I'm just going to wait for the mk 8.
Lmao I got an R with leather seats push start and manual. Probably the best combo. Can’t steal a push start if it’s manual 😂 most people can’t drive it
Great video mate first time checking your content I’m looking at buying my first golf having always owned fords in the past so hopefully will have saved enough cash for next summer and then a golf R will be mine defo subscribed
Buying a car for resale value is like not driving it for low milleage. If you truly like to drive, if your truly passionate you wont buy your car for the next one, you'll buy your car for you. I'm sorry but nothing beats a manual for pure passionante rewarding fun.
Great video! I love the Golf R but I would prefer a manual... but I understand that you chose the dsg which is practical when you’re living in the city. There is a “new” golf R engine with only 306 hp and I don’t understand why same is which Audi s3 and tts at least in Germany?
Great video my friend, I’ve been interested lately in the golf R’s currently drive an Audi A3 1.4 s line but gonna be looking into these and do some research. I’ve hit the subscribe button too 😁👍🏻
I prefer the standard interior cloth and alcantara over the leather. Nothing to do with the price. I am looking to get a ghost immobiliser for mine the day i buy it.
@@realtalk7571My wife just bought an R 2018 --> Could not get a cloth interior in all of Victoria (not that we'd want it). Get a clue before making a comment.
Have you had any issues with it loosing power or bogging down??. When approaching a roundabout slowing down I then put my foot down to pull off quickly to beat traffic and it just looses power like its going into limp mode for few secs then goes again once I taken my foot of the gas and put down again. Very disappointed. But love my car too . 7.5 golf r
C'mon kids! All you got to know: its has boost, dsg, all wheel drive and its fast! Just get it and rock it! Make sure you to use good oil and change it every 7k km.
That comment about buying new is wrong. I had a well specced Mini JCW from new, six months later I made £56 on it. Doesn't sound like much, but with the right options, you can keep depreciation low.
Stephen Menet that is a rather rare scenario, can you tell us more about how you did that? Generally cars lose a hefty percentage of value as soon as it rolls off the forecourt!
It does not matter if your golf r is keyless or not, they still get robbed. only way to really prevent them from being robbed is to block them in hard with raisable bollards on a drive way, or park it up at a cop shop lol.
@philipt12345 its been brilliant mate over the moon with it, ive went from a 1.6tdi golf to that thing 🤣. The car runs spot on so definitely delighted with it. I have a Golf R manual as a performance car. The manual is 1500 us dollars cheaper them the DSG In USA. Why to buy a performance DSG car? I'm just in love with my manual golf. My driving school is different comparing to your... Enjoy your nice car
I am in the market for a Golf R and I am not set on new or used yet. I have had a price of £30,700 at 3.6% for new and around £26/27,000 used. Any tips & tricks on price or buying?
At least here in Canada, automatic sports cars are actually less desirable. DSG Golf Rs are not more expensive because they are more desirable, they are more expensive because auto gearboxes cost more.
Dylan Van - I am a common person yes. I speak common and do common things. But there’s at least 5 driving around my town and I don’t live in a big town either. I’ve seen more R’s than RS3’s.. even in the cities.

This is very true!

i like your shift paddle shifter extensions. Can you tell me what brand and where you get it from?
So what can you do to combat this, aftermarket security devices?
SKRMZ put all your contactless keys in a aluminium tin
Kiran Payne see I’ve always had a little small engine polos and was thinking of upgrading to a golf R in the summer. Thanks though I’ll look into it
Got a 15 plate Mk7 R manual.
JUST because you have a DBS does not mean that you can park like an absolute ham and cheese melt.
Good video btw. 😂
Haha true! Thanks for the kind words - glad you enjoyed the video!!
I know I shouldn't have ordered a new R but I couldn't help it! Only a few more weeks to go..! Great video as always.

Nice video. Totally agree with keyless entry and full leather being unnecessary. I bought a 2.5 year old Mk7 DSG to replace a M135. Running costs are higher, don't forget Haldex and DSG service and with fuel economy if u drive very efficiently 380 miles on 98RON. The only thing I miss is 7th gear on the motorway compared to 7.5
Thanks Chris!
Lol you downgraded to a 4 pot

Please don't relax about theft just because you didn't get keyless start. These theives use transmitters to get in the car, not to start it and drive it away. Once they are in, they break the steering lock and wire the car. That will work on any car - even your car - if you have a key button that unlocks the car (instead of putting the key into the door lock). With the keyless start cars, the key must remain "in proximity" for the car to be successfully driven. That's why they again break the steering lock and wire those cars also.
Any chance of a head to head with the Honda Civic type R or the Audi RS3 ??
TYPE R!
In the process of organising both!
RS3? Or S3? I’d like to see both but RS3 is a little beyond golf R territory
Rs3 would smoke a golf R. Maybe a S3 would be the choice. I saw a type r and golf r in a half mile race and they tied.
May I ask, who makes the carbon shift paddles? It is very nice!

Keyless Access - You can turn off this function by using close button on key and then fast locking car again by touching door handle again. Go away from the range of sensor for 10 seconds and you shouldnt be able to unlock the car with Keyless Access but just with the unlock button on key. That works at least for european cars.
You ramble on a hell of a lot.

No worries!
Debadge the car, fit lower model badging, or fit a hidden switch from the fuel pump relay.
You raise a good point!
I've just put a deposit on an S3. Any chance you could maybe do a comparison video between the golf r and s3? A kind of is it worth the extra money type of thing.
I'm working on it! :)
nathan ogrady I have driven and lived with both.
It will bounce of the signals and make hacking alot more troublesome! ;)
Or park your performance car in the garage??
Great comment about the very vulnerable golf R keyless entry as I never knew this! Can anyone comment if the GTI suffers with the same problem?
If you want a hot hatch you get the M140i if insurance is a problem and you want AWD then you get the S3 or focus RS
You obviously have different options there in the UK with the R. Here in the US, we get two options to pick - paint color and manual or automatic.
I have been reading that if you shut off your car in race that when you turn it back on that the mode will say race but the engine exhaust and throttle response reverts back to comfort. You then have to cycle through the drive select and re select race to get the entire car back functioning as the true race . Is this something you have heard before ?
Lee S yes to protect the engine from wet leg idiots who treat throttle as on/off switch from cold
I have the smart ForTwo at the moment. No joke! And I’m thinking of buying 1. Will I notice the speed difference? 😂😂😂
May i ask what you pay for insurance on one of these?
Keyless go argument is BS. Have it and no issue. Live in North America, I recommend others do their research before taking this guys opinion.
Full leather/vinyl interior is much easier to maintain and clean. How is it not fitting for VW’s flagship premium hot hatch?
DSG is faster and can handle more power if you ever want to tune.
Def go for 7.5. Bigger infotainment screen and a virtual cockpit.
Agree on buying used car. Bought new and regret it.
to prevent those keyless theft just buy one of the faraday bags for your key i tested it and it has worked for me
It always amazes me how much of a problem auto theft is in europe. Leather is the only option here in the states. DSG in the R is really uncommon here as well which is annoying since its the better option.
Love how he has options for the R over there. Here in the US the only options are colors and wheels.
And the transmission type....
Because you got the cheaper optioned car with no leather you also miss out of heated seats, which are super handy in WINTER!
