    • @lonememe
      @lonememe 6 лет назад +4

      Exactly. Then let's talk about smoking cars on the track because a simple ECM flash tune like APR Stage 1 would put it above pretty much all of the others on the list. Oh and 0-60 times in a DSG, there's no competition in that list.

      I'd love to see a vid where they do runs between STI, Focus RS, Type R and Golf R all with reflashed ECU only. For whatever reason the Golf R seems to get the highest gains of the segment with tune only although I'm hearing through the grapevine that the Type R is a beast in its own right with a tune.

      @mattwilson5383 6 лет назад +1

      Dan Lee the VW’s are very undertuned from the factory and have been for awhile. A $500-600 flash from APR can net a ton of power without any hardware.

    I bought a 2019 stick golf r, had it for three months before I got t-boned and the car was totaled. Luckily insurance gave me a full refund so I decided to get another one but with the dsg transmission, and I was blown away by how much faster it was than the manual. The acceleration difference is significant and I genuinely get startled sometimes when I merge into traffic with my foot half down. 10/10 if totaled will buy again

    Own one. The manual is "fun" but the so is the dsg. Drove a manual most of my life and miss it for sure but the DSG just transforms the car imo and it's super fun still because the dsg actually works. Also, if you plan to tune (why wouldn't you?), the dsg doesn't require clutch changes and it's also significantly faster. 4.5 to 60 vs 5.2 to 60. And the type R is FWD...physics is physics. A light tune on this car and it will run circles around the Type R. Mine does 0-60 in 3.6 seconds and the quarter mile in 12.2 with the TCU tune and ECU tune, both just stage 1. It's ridiculous. Throw some decent tires on it and I'd like to see how much "faster" the Type R is. Also AWD isn't just for the winter. You get insane launches off the line, night and day corner exit speeds and pretty much traction no matter what. I can see the Type R having a better corner entry speed but not by much as its' single only advantage on the track.

      Sigh, why does nobody understand how haldex works. Haldex uses a clutch to mate the front and rear instead of a diff. This clutch pack locks, that means the front and rear splines HAVE to spin at the same speed, that means a maximum of 50% to the rear IF AND ONLY IF the fronts have traction. If the fronts do not have enough traction to put the power down then the torque by default goes to the rear up to 100% if the fronts have zero traction. In other words if the front wheels are on ice and the rears are on dry pavement then the car will send 100% of the power to the rear (well 99%, some torque will be expended on applying angular momentum to the front wheels, there is still mass there to be accelerated after all). This is pure physics.

    Oh, with the boost gauges, you only subtract 14.7 PSI at sea level. I would subtract 12.0 PSI here in Denver, CO. So, that's kind of neat to not subtract atmosphere

    This was a very good video! Probably my favorite one. I’ve watched from you guys yet. I liked the repartee, the back-and-forth opinions, and the comparing and contrasting. The winter driving was a WHOLE vibe and it made me want one of these more than ever.
    I also like how you guys didn’t make it about manual vs. automatic, because there was equal high praise for both transmissions in this video. It was ultimately about the car. The Golf R just does everything well and this was just an all-around positive video with love for the car.

      They replace the clutch at 60k km??

    • @acchaladka
      @acchaladka 6 лет назад

      Boomer Roberts Sorry - edited my comment for clarity. VW designed the R with the DSG only in mind (Euro culture around racing performance and luxury maybe), and then added in their stock manual after customer feedback told them that no, really, many people do want manual. The DSG high service cost however (I think it’s around $1000 CAD at 60,000 km) means that for the same money you can fry your stock clutch and get a really nice racing clutch replacement, and the price between the DSG ($1500 upgrade + $1000 service) will be basically the same as replacing and upgrading the manual clutch. So, get the manual if it’s all a consideration for you.

    • @Boomer.Roberts
      @Boomer.Roberts 6 лет назад +1

      Oh I see what you mean! Thanks for explaining. If I ever got a Golf R I'm not the racing type anyway, I just like driving stick, and prefer having AWD. So I'd stick with the stock clutch and it would hopefully last a good long while :)

    I'm a manual truther, spent the last 5 years driving a Civic Si and then an NC Miata in stick. When my mom was looking to get rid of her soccer mom van I suggested a stick GTI to her and she bought it and loves it. But after my Miata got totaled two weeks ago I went to test a DSG GTI and I was blown away. Maybe coming from a Miata (a car with just about the tightest shifter you can get) the GTI shifter felt kinda mushy, the clutch engagement point wasn't linear very linear and didn't give you much feel until the top inch or so of travel, and you can't bang home up shifts quite as quickly. The DSG just feels so much faster, the shift paddles are responsive, and it you can really enjoy the car with it. I may have been converted

    It's up to 50% of power to the rear wheels due to the design of the Haldex coupling system and the FWD platform of the Golf. The rear drive shaft is always powered via the front bevel box being physically coupled to the output from the transmission. The rear drive unit has a hydraulically activated clutch pack that is controlled via pulse witdth modulation of the fluid pump speed. When the car detects loss of traction at the front wheels, it switches on the haldex fluid pump. The more slip, the more clamping pressure it creates causing more rear drive axle engagement up to 50% of the total applied power. When slippage stops, pump activation is reduced and the car goes back to being fwd.

    Haven't driven stick shift in 10 years, but that's beside the point. Nowadays, you're actually better off with an automatic (dual-clutch) for everyday driving - especially if you live in a big metropolitan area and have to deal with heavy rush-hour traffic. Manuals are best suited for the open road.

That dude tested ~15 different cars on that track so I think he is more professional than I do? Anyway I didn’t drive a typeR on track myself, so I am not convinced this will get destroyed by that. And this car is super fun on the track, I also drove m5/m4, I don’t think this is less fun on track when compared, but it’s indeed much more boring in daily drive, on the other hand it’s a good thing, I really don’t want my daily life to be heart pumping breath taking everyday, smooth, comfortable is the key, and with extra power to go amp is also great.

    My VW mechanic said if you are looking for power to get the DSG. Otherwise you have the chance of ruining your thrust bearings. Especially if you mess up a shift. The DSG is basically a manual that is run automatically. Humble Mechanic did a video on the DSG. They are also cheaper to upgrade than a manual transmission. You can get a tune and a performance clutch pack for $5k US. And the manual is about $10k US. I have a Mk6 GTI with a stick that I absolutely love. I know everything about dieselgate, i'm just saying in EU or to be more specific in East EU people drive diesel cars not because they like it but because they cano't afford to drive a car that consumes more then 6 liter per 100 km and all gasoline powered cars even those with new tehnology engines with 1000 ccm turbo 3 cylinders consume more fuel than diesel cars.Just for example average salary in east EU is 500 euros and 1 liter of eurodiesel cost 1.30 euros , so i think there are bigger problem's to solve then complain about diesel scandal.Our life standard is so pathetic and so much bigger problem then ecology issues that nobody really cares, very sad but also very true.Even more sad is fact that some people from Switzerland drive diesel cars, for what reason who knows, maybe they like tractor sounding engines or they are just stupid and think they are so cool.Switzerland everage salary per month 3500 euros !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    One thing you guys missed about the golfs is the trunk floor can be lowered a few inches to fit more boxes. Really great reviews though, best channel, great after effects edits!

      No we tried that. It doesn't help with boxes. Think about how much it drops vs how big a box is. It helps with other stuff

    First: the dashboard display doesn't say boost. It simply displays pressure (manifold pressure, I assume). Second: your example of the 30 psi displayed is 30 psi delivered to the engine; simple. The dashboard read-out IS showing the air pressure being delivered. If you wanted to see just boost above atmospheric pressure, that could be done as you said, however the displayed figure would not be as accurate as it is now from the factory since air pressure is barometric and changing often (does it matter). 1 atmosphere, or air pressure at sea level, is approximately 14.7 psi and it varies. When the car is at idle and the turbo is hardly working, there is vacuum and something much less than 1 atmosphere (14.7 psi) is being delivered to the engine. When the motor is asked to deliver more power and the turbo spools-up, it pushes air into the engine at the figure indicated on the dashboard. If you wanted the dashboard to display only the boost above 1 atmosphere, it could be done but then when the car was at idle and the motor was creating a vacuum, the dashboard would have to show negative boost or at least zero boost, until pressure reached 1 atmosphere. That would be odd.
