      Marginally? The dsg is way faster stock for stock and gets roughly 2 seconds faster in the 1/4 with FBOs

      I just drove a manual Golf R and the clutch and gearbox were a disappointment. Both felt light and far from a “sports” car (or a 300hp hot hatch). I’ll try the DSG to see if I could live with an auto (first time for me) because I really want to buy a Golf R. If the DSG isn’t of my liking I’ll have to give it a second chance to the manual...
      I’m drive a Mini and the gearbox, clutch and steering feel a lot more sporty than on the Golf. But when you floor it there’s no doubt who’s got the power, what a crazy thing! The traction is awesome!

    The simple way I decide if I want Manual vs Dual Clutch is that it's entirely car dependent. If I am going to be a do everything car meaning drive it daily,get groceries, etc and I just want to have a bit of fun at times, then DSG. If its a special weekend toy, where I drive strictly for enjoyment, canyon carving, and track days then manual.

      I thought it would be a pain in the arse with a manual, but to be honest i don't even realize it's there. And being able to boot it with a 3rd pedal it feels more driver orientated, dsg is too video gamey for me.

  • @MrArchie800

    I agree the manual is 'traditionally' the driver’s car, but as soon as you try the DSG you will probably be very surprised! I never thought I’d prefer an auto but after having owned both DSG then manual I have to say it’s DSG all the way. The manual just feels slow and clunky after living with the DSG. BUT (and a big but) the reason I moved to manual is that the DSG started playing up and that really scared me because there is no cheap fix for a faulty DSG out of warranty, and I hear other people having similar problems - so if you’re keeping the car past its manufacturers warranty period then I’d think twice about the DSG.

    Manual Transmission never gets old! DSG is one of the best automatic transmission out there, however it's prone to having problems.... and being jerky at low speed. A lot of the mk5 that had DSGs have lost a lot of their resale value because nobody wants them especially if you want to tune it. I have a 6 speed manual GTI and I love it! Even with heavy traffic, I still love it, because it's so easy to change gears. You are always engaged with the car! Always listening to the engine rev to make that perfect shift...If you want 💯 driving involvement and a better resale value, then go for a Manual GTI/R.

    I bought a DSG over a manual as it's quicker, eventhough I previously despised autos. DSG is fine for everyday driving. For the commute in the morning I am in ECO as it coasts down hill, but the drive back is in race 😁. Anything with the family is in Comfort.

      KariahLuke CHAN so it really depends how you drive it. DSG will change gears at the most optimum point, depending on what mode it's in. I am averaging 30mpg at the moment. In ECO it has cylinder deactivation and so hypermils along. So I would say DSG over manual.

      I've found my dsg is more economic in drive/normal than eco. I think this is down to the gearing in eco and my drive style maybe. It's in race mode and then I leave it in drive when I restart, with it only going into full sport more using the gear stick quick change mode when I need it. I'm getting 33/34 mpg to work and over 30mpg home

      3DFX no not really, if I'm just cruising down the highway, or in traffic, why have the car in race mode, or if I'm just going for a quick run to the store not feeling like gunning it there. Eco mode is awesome cause you can have the best of both worlds performance when you want it, fuel economy when you want it.

    • @ADirtyPanda97
      @ADirtyPanda97 7 лет назад +2

      What’s wasting your money is filling up on fuel every 10 yards because you go every where in dynamic mode. There’s a time and a place for sport modes and cruising down a street at 30mph in second gear Revving at 6000 rpm isn’t one of them haha iv got an Audi s3 and it’s unbearable driving around normally in sport mode. Eco or comfort modes gives you the best of both worlds

  • @Flip_Angle
    @Flip_Angle 7 лет назад +5

    I purchased the manual R. I did because the more involved you are in the driving of the car the more rewarding it is when it's done properly. A DSG is not as involved we all know this. Also, the DSG is faster but that matters only to the owners ego or on a racetrack.
    The advantage of the DSG is tech.Automatic transmissions are the future. The manufacturer can fine tune the experience in ways no manual can ever be.
    I've only ever owned manual transmissions. So traffic is not an issue for me either. Manual is all I know. I'll miss them when eventually I _have to_ switch.
    The few modes that I have on my 2016 make very little difference. I don't have DCC. The engine mode does nothing noticeable. The steering mode makes a slight difference. I'm not sure why there is an option for how much the lights react... Lastly the soundactor is the most significant change in the different modes. On the individual mode I turn the engine sound to normal and engine to normal. However, I pretty much just keep the car in race. The modes make too little difference to mess with them.

    I’m very close to buying a 2018 Golf R in Canada. I’ve been looking at resale prices for 5-yr old models, and all other things equal, they hold similar resale value...
    Every car I’ve owned was manual, so I’m thinking of going with the standard version despite the acceleration difference. But I need to know, does the manual gearbox version get the same popping exhaust noise? Also, does anyone know if the Canadian edition will have the 310hp engine for 2019?

    • @pokest225
      @pokest225 7 лет назад +2

      Darian Fairclough Not that good idea. The clutch of the manual Golf can't take much more power than the standard number. So you will need an uprated clutch eventually. So, more money spent. The dsg can cope with much more power than the manual without any mods.

    • @darianfairclough9910
      @darianfairclough9910 7 лет назад +1

      pokest225 stage 2+ requires an uprated clutch. Look at the specs, and anyhow I'd rather put money into a beefier clutch considering I will probably like to get into stage 2+ modding as well, to pass 400 bhp. When you get into modding both of them the difference in speed becomes negligible and more a function of how much money you put into either car. Given that, and since I prefer a more interactive car, standard.

I traded it for a BMW 128i 6MT, not as fast, but as Chris Harris says, there’s no substitute for a rear wheel drive, naturally aspirated 6 with a manual. Yes I miss the newness, the sheer quickness, and tech of the R, but the on demand rear drive vs all time rear drive and DSG coupled with electric steering- honestly, dulled the driving experience.

    If anything, I think manual box owners miss out a bit on the full features of the Golf, like the adaptive cruise control works really well on the DSG setup and also the engine modes between, Eco, Normal and Race as the gear changes are very different pending the setting, where a manual box is always down to the driver to change gear differently, so many say the engine settings make little difference which makes sense.....
    So although the DSG is more money you do get more features besides auto gear changing.
    Exhaust noise is a different track with the DSG from the quick shifting etc.

  • @JayOfBurn
    @JayOfBurn 6 лет назад

    I have a Mk7.5 R with a DSG. Personally, I USED to use it in individual with everything set to race apart from the engine noise which was set to Eco, purely because the noise you hear is coming from the "magic hockey puck" sound adjudicator. But, after some research I found that the only way all four exhaust flaps work is having it in race mode unless you modify the coding, I stopped using individual mode and just keep it in race.
    MPG between eco and race... not that drastically different.
    Feel between eco and race... vast, if you notice the different weighting to the steering wheel, and the throttle response.
    Must admit, I am thinking back quite a way as I had mine remapped three months after buying.
    On the argument of DSG vs Manual, take away the clutch and use it like a manual, the flappy paddles are a bit strange to get used to but the shift is incredible with the DSG. I unfortunately have to use 'auto' boxes due to a several mangled left leg, but I love my R. The gearbox is a work of art and the motor is fantastic. Not long ago mine went down the SantaPod 1/4mi in 11.9s, that's stock internals just a remap and tweaked suspension. Manuals were not keeping up at all.

      Thanks for the comment Jason, some great information there! I normally drive in Individual mode with everything set to Eco except for the gearbox which is in D as I don't like the coasting. I've just driven to work in Race except for the gearbox in D instead of S and got the exact same MPG!

    DSG far superior. I have DSG in my remapped Octavia 1.4 TSI. Wouldn't touch a manual again for ownership but do drive manual pool cars at work.

    If it’s your weekend car manual if it’s used a fair bit the dsg is a great all rounder and faster, and better fuel 7 speed

    I had a 2017 GTI with a manual and it was a good manual, nice and smooth and the clutch was nice to work too. but the DSG is such a good transmission, I think I'd go with that one.

      Interesting thoughts! We agree, you can still get some serious gear changes in a DSG too.

    In the end Manual will save you a lot in service maintenance, that DSG maintenance is EXPENSIVE, if you treat every light as a drag strip or if you are an American get the DSG.

      did not vw choose manual for track times when they attempt to set records, for lighter weight, higher top speed, more driver control and interaction?
      straightline lauch control dsg.

    • @Tigerex966
      @Tigerex966 7 лет назад +1

      so why did vw choose a manual for the golf nurburing, maybe with a professional driver and all of those curves the manual and lighter weight helped, but not in straightline launching?

    • @bcepni00

      Not everyone can use that extra weight reduction. Acceleration in the same gear won't change either.

      @@Tigerex966 the clubsport S doesn't come with a DSG it is manual only that's why and weight difference is only 60 lbs not a major factor. I still think manual is funner though.

    In the end of the day. Dsg is just boring. It is good and fast. But boring. Manual all the way.
    Clutch in these cars is SO light. Traffic should be no problem. My GTI has clutch like feather. Almost too much.

    I've had DSG gearboxes on a variety of VAG cars...they are great if you do a lot of urban driving or m'way crawling...but I hate that you have to put them into neutral in order to come to a halt smoothly..and I don't trust them (in front wheel drive cars) when you have to pull out of a junction/onto a roundabout when there is very little margin for error. I currently have a Porsche Mecan S with PDK..I'd say it's better than DSG but would still pay a premium for a manual gearbox...and certainly not the other way around!!
    My wife has an Audi S1...manual 6 speed box...guess which car I want to drive? ☺
    PS.Lapiz blue is The Golf R colour IMHO

    DSG for me. I've driven manual for years and always preferred it for a sporty drive, however after driving an R with the DSG I was sold, it's just a beautifully shifting tranny. Plus you can always use the paddles in manual mode.

    The Golf R is Excellent In its Manual formation especially in STG1 format & it will pull very strong all the way in all its rather low gearing. The gears are really short & are a hoot in and around town etc which is fine. I would not consider this car to anyone to be a 'Top Cruiser' as my 2008 Saab 9-3 turbo 6 speed manual convertible would cruise easily at 100mph at 3K revolutions or 120mph at 4k revolutions. I am not a big fan of fast Automatic mobility scooters & always very much enjoy the pure driving experience of manual transmission. I am only saying this comment because I own both because together they have there own purpose which I would say as Horses for courses etc........

    I bought not leased a golf R manual my budget was 20k and yea the dsg is slightly quicker from the off but after purcashing the manual would I buy another manual defo...it's my second car and it was bought as a play toy..for me I love manual I drive auto vans for work...and as it's my toy the sound of a manual against a dsg it's a no win for the dsg sorry lazy auto fans manual sounds way better can't stand the auto sound and worse still when people pay a grand to make that dull sound louder...personal preference but sorry just not mine so manual all the way....

      It's true. The clutch can't handle much more than standard power. Eventually, you will need an uprated clutch. The dsg can cope with more power, as it can apply more pressure to the clutches.

    Couple of things.
    1. The autohold function plays a part when in traffic. Makes a manual more like the DSG.
    2.With the manual you need to make sure the Turbo is spooled to get the boost.
    I have the manual and love it.
    If you get the changes right it will reward you.
    I suppose it's that driver participation you guys were talking about.

    What wanker settings , fuck me I own one and who cares about all that shit , the fuel economy is irrelevant its a pissy 4 cylinder anyway , its not a big block chev getting 8miles to the gallon, christ I can thrash my Golf its got stage 2 on it and still gets over 450k a tank and if you drive in economy mode it still returns 600k a tank with DSG. Worrying about all the settings is such a wank, oput them on full tilt every setting, if you arent wanting the power , buy a Gti
