    the author of this book's kid actually went to my middle school, we graduated the same year. She was close and knew the our principal and had an assembly just for this book. Our school is separated into 'majors' called talents where you have to audition to get in. They had a couple of drama talent kids act out a scene and it was the most awkward thing ever. She kept going on about how her book was super diverse and that she would 'talk' to her characters in her mind out loud and disguised it as talking to someone on the phone. And then she and our principal encouraged the students to by the book and she would sign it for them.

    listen, once I went to dye my hair little-mermaid-red but it only took to my roots, so I looked like my scalp was bleeding. your hair looks great and smurf skrillex killed me
    w h y y y y y y did he have to be one-dimensional? and the telling and not showing is awful but when it's supposed to be an emotional read... UGH. i want to feel things!!! things besides frustration that i'm wasting my time!!!!

    • @withcindy
      @withcindy  6 лет назад +2

      yeah the thing about sentimental fiction is that you have to be really good at showing and not telling, and be able to hit the right tone with nuanced writing. i'm sure the author had good intentions with writing a gay muslim character, but i think she was pandering way too much that he became a caricature. it's a tough barrier for authors to pull off writing the experiences of character with a different race & sexual orientation tho. 🤷

    You should read & review All the Bright Places! It's a gorgeous YA contemporary novel about loss, mental illness, and suicide. It deals with it in a sensitive, mature way, while also capturing how horrible living with the loss of a loved one is. The book starts with a boy names Finch, who had bipolar disorder, meeting a girl named Violet, who recently lost her sister, on the edge of a school roof. 9/10, would recommend

    I was literally just about to buy this a few hours ago. Although, I'm not really good at critically analysing what I read I'm very selective with the books I choose. Honestly, feels great to have people who are similar. Also I feel like now there is too much YA literature that just clings onto grief to somehow bring the plot together, despite it not being well written and that s u c k s

    OMG, this book sounds so sad. I was actually curious about Gayle Forman's writing cause I see her books everywhere. But after this review, both funny and explanatory, and a comment below about If I Stay, I think I'll save my time and spend it on some really good book. I also liked that you came with an example of a good book about grief instead. Maybe I'll give it a shot sometime.

    Bruh, I read her book If I Stay, and that was a good book. But the second book to it, Where She Went, is literally I Have Lost my Way. Mia runs to New York, Adam is a famous rock-star, and they only have one night together and they fall back in love, even though Mia told him she hated him for making her stay alive. it’s a trip. And the writing is so bad.

    While I enjoyed If I Stay by Gayle Forman, I haven't really enjoyed some of her other books and don't really feel like picking up more from her and based on this review, I'll be staying away from this book.

    I read this psychology article on the development of NPD in children, and came across this line:

    I recently read A Spark of Light by Jodi Picoult and this review is so relatable because in A Spark of Light, it happened to be having so many repetitions as well. But I gotta give credit to the message of the book and the discussion made regarding the topic (even though it was keep being repeated that I was truly bored and hoping to get to the ending of it). Also, I had a lot of fun watching this video and glad that I didn't pick it up lol.
