Yes I agree. This game is a masterpiece by Nintendo. And while it can be really challenging, the game actually doesn't put you down for constantly failing a level because they give you the option to skip. Isn't that so kind of Nintendo? They know that some people are bound to struggle and might rage, and Nintendo wants to ensure people don't get *too* triggered.
When he said not everyone has nearly 30 years of platforming gaming experience, I was going to say that I don't and I completed the game (160% or so), but then I remembered I have more than 25 years of gaming experience myself and now I feel very old. T__T
5:20 I feel like it would've made more sense to show all the modes at the same time, so that while Funky Mode is still the default, players are still aware that it's the easy version.
With the way Celeste handled a similar feature (before allowing you to enable its assist mode, it displays this message: "Celeste was designed to be a challenging, but accessible game. We believe that its difficulty is essential to the experience. We recommend playing without Assist Mode your first time. However, we understand that every player is different. If Celeste is inaccessible to you due to its difficulty, we hope that Assist Mode will allow you to still enjoy it."), this relatively clumsy implementation really stands out.

this is going to sound incredibly biased, and i know its also dumb to rebuy a game for the same price as a modren game when its over 2 years old but you should absolutely buy this game again. not just because its a good game but because Retro studios deserves it. Andre was not kidding when he said this game is like the ultimate combination of side scrollers leading up the this game. and while he might not sound as excited or mindblown as the mario odyssey review. it has to spoken just HOW incredibly good this game is. this is the best game in the donkey kong series and one of the greatest side scrolelr/platformers ever created ant it is absolutely worth buying. Retro studious deserves all the success this game deserved and its total price sales should reflect it now that it isnt hindered by a console no one bought. please support this game, i hope retro can keep up this quality with maybe another franchise or maybe a new 3D styled DK game ala 64

Judging by the comment section, it seems like the people who didn't buy the original also don't want to buy this version because of the price tag. And it's such a good game too. I feel like Nintendo is missing out on sales again because they want to cram more profit in order to compensate for their losses on the original. Worth the price? Definitely. Scummy move from Nintendo? Absolutely. The original launched at $50. To add insult to injury, they took it off the Wii U eShop, Where it did only cost around $25 as it was a Nintendo Selects title.

I mean, DKTP was $20 on the WiiU, and Nintendo often reduces games down to classics for it's systems. Not to mention if you shop on Amazon or online, older games, even switch, are constantly cheaper.
I love 2D playformers, but while this game looks really fun, there's no way I'm spending triple the old price for an easy mode I'll never use. If I really wanted DKC:TF I'd just find a way to buy it on the Wii U (like Amazon or something). With that being said, I'm still open to getting the Switch version, but only if the price is lowered considerably.

Retro is easily one of the best developers in the industry. Able to take any genre and evolve it past any previous limitations using only their imagination. Nintendo has a gold mine in Retro and I am eagerly hoping for DKC 3 soon.
After my first semester of college is done next week AND after finishing Kirby Star Allies and BotW (yes, I haven’t played it yet because of Mario Odyssey), DKCTF may be next on the list! Haven’t had a chance to play it and I love platformers!
If K. Rool and Dixie both get in (which is being speculated heavily among Smash fans), he would most likely be an Assist. I could see him in his plane dropping barrels that explode mong the stage, that would be cool!
+Hector Well I don't really mind too many characters from the same franchise in Smash. Just as long as their not clones. I mean, we're gonna get more FE characters in Smash thanks to FE Heroes: Shadows of Valentia/FE Warriors. And then there's LoZ in case Skull Kid/or Midna won't be Assist Trophys(plus I kinda want the BOTW champions to be playable). And as for Pokemon, we'll only have Decidueye & whoever the most popular pokemon for Pokemon Switch.
unless you want to play as Funky Kong or play in portable mode majority of the time; the Wii U (assuming you have the system) version is a cheaper option. Especially when you can get the game now for around $20 new (part of the nintendo selects line) vs $60 MSRP
Unfortunately, being one of the Wii U version owners, I don't feel compelled to dive back into TF that much. Funky Mode is nothing I would play anyway so that addition means nothing to me. I reeeally wish they could've made it free to choose any Kong outside the Hard mode as a main and not just Donkey. This was the only complaint I had about TF back in the day as I would love to main Dixie and have either Diddy or Cranky as a partner.
Can one person play as Funky and the someone else play as another Kong on Co op? or is Funky always on his own? I have only seen co op Funky Mode gameplay with Donkey and Dixie,Diddy, or Cranky.

I went to stop it halfway through to switch over to games, but they liked your video so much they wanted to watch til the end lol. And they love their mario. I have a friend who let me borrow his DKTF for Wii U so I never had to buy it myself but the game is a blast and my life changed since then so I will preorder the game this time!
I feel you discount one big reason this version has extra value over DKC Tropical Freeze on Wii U. The Switch's portability factor. I don't have this game yet, but I really feel like the Switch being portable grants an inherent extra value to any Wii U port and makes them worth buying a second time. And notice how I specifically say I don't have this game yet, but I fully intend to buy the game eventually because I love this game to a ridiculous degree. I can gush and go on about it endlessly, just because I think it's that amazing of a game. And having this game for car trips or when out of the house for any reason? Yes. Please.
But i am wondering. No one mentions this if you get all the kong letters are there more levels. In the oringinal there was 3. In returns there was 1 and 8 others added in the 3ds version. I am hoping for a world 9 in this version like in the 3ds
I already own Tropical Freeze for my Wii U, but I am buying it to and 200% playing the game as Funky Kong, I would like to see how fun it is to play as him.
I never played tropical freeze only dk county returns but I loved that game and was thinking about picking this up as it looks the same but with different levels I was only really concerned it mightn’t be as good cause it’s not the game I’m remembering just a similar one as well as I thought all the levels would be ice levels with the entire island being covered in snow but based off the gameplay in this video that doesn’t seem to be the case, if your still replying to comments on this oldish video would you recommend a buy?
For some reason I sold my Wii U copy a few years back. Regrettably. I really wanna play it again and my friends seem a lot more open to playing games on the Switch with me - so I'm gonna double dip. I found the boost to 1080p quite noticeable in Mario Kart 8 so looking forward to seeing it again here.
The last time I played a donkey kong country game was on the SNES. I got to play Tropical Freeze for the first time and I love it :) I never owned a Wii U
So Funky Kong is easy mode? not bad but I'll stick to playing it the way it's meant to be played, with Donkey Kong. I died many times playing this game but once I finally made it to the end I can't put into words how satisfying it felt, not many games give you that feeling today.
They should have the option of letting you pick any song you’d like for each level and include the original music from the original dk country that alone would make the game that much better
Don’t care I’m buying this again so I can co-op this time with my GF and my roommate.. and when I’m alone I’m going to plug in headphones and lay back. Game brought back serious memories of playing the original Donkey Kong Country trilogy, amazing times. David Wise is incredible!
Which, in everyone’s opinion would you get first and why.... DK tropical Freeze OR Super Mario Bro’s U Deluxe, both for the Nintendo Switch of course... im torn.. ive not played either one of these games because i never got to get a wii u... and i love both franchises.. however i must say some of my best memories as a kid growing up was playing super mario world, and finding all of the stars, secrets, color ‘?’ blocks and star road, etc. Do the new super mario bros U and DK:TF have secrets like that to find etc., anybody know?
Okay, glad to know you can still play as DK in Funky mode. I have no issue with Funky Kong, but he's way too OP and I was afraid there was no in-between with the more difficult normal mode and the very easy Funky Mode. But I know several people who will probably find DK Funky Mode (really should have a proper name) ideal.
First time going through, It's great so far. I love the challenging gameplay that a lot of games lack these days. I also grew up with the original DKC games :)
I 109% completed DKC Tropical Freeze on Wii U, but I do wanna play it again. I sadly lost my Wii U disc, so I'll probably get it again after I've gotten all the new releases I haven't yet played.
Agreed with this review in full. Wouldn't suggest double-dip (certainly not at full price) but for a first-time... Get it. This game is phenomenal and absolutely worth your time.
well at least you heard me kinda the last rant I mentioned and slightly corrected yourself with the 1080/720 issue but you still seem to think that the wii u which was only 1080p somehow made a 1080p game down to 720p and at least you did mention how a 720p switch can actually play in 1080 only by the dock, but still..... price wise I only paid $40 for it being a prime member and honestly never finished the wii u version so yeah the price is just fine for me as my list of switch titles grows and my back log keeps getting bigger and bigger across all platforms
Anyone that skipped the Wii U should definitely pick this up. This will become a classic platformer. Probably the best in the Donkey Kong Country series imo. AMAZING soundtrack too as a plus.
Well I'm glad it's finally getting the respect and attention it deserves. To this day I still listen to it's soundtrack. More than I did with DKC2 , which I always herald as number 1. Yeah I did own it on the Wii U but didn't play it as much cuz of the difficulty and also always pawning and repawning the Wii U. The farthest I ever gotten was World 3. So I may rebuy it to fully enjoy it and the Funky Mode. Heck I already rebought Mario kart and Pokken, might as well this one
Great game but making the price that high for a game that has been release 4 years ago is a shame. The saddest part is that people are ok with this and are giving more money than ever before to Nintendo.
It's not sad, it's called economics. Nintendo has a supply, we have a demand. Obviously the demand is still worth the value Nintendo is putting on the supply. If it isn't for you, don't buy it.
Joseph Listerman Why is it that Sony can release an HD remaster of Ratchet and Clank for $40, Activision remastering the entire Crash Bandicoot trilogy for $30, and countless hd collections like the Nathan Drake collection for $20? Nintendo is not poor company and they do not have to make their ports full price. Hell, Tropical Freeze was a $50 game at launch and they marked it down to $20 as a Nintendo Select. The value is not there anymore at all and these games should not be full price. It's a port of the Wii U version that made it's money before.
You stated yourself that " people are OK with this and are giving more money than ever before to Nintendo." If that's truly the case then their products aren't over priced. They may be too expensive for you but if that isn't the majority it doesn't matter to them. Essentially then no-one can say this product is over or under priced until we see how it does. Nintendo thinks that they will sell the game at $60 without taking a large hit to sales quantities vs. the increased sales (yet lower revenue) of a $40 price. We'll have to see.
Tropical Freeze could well be one of, if not the best game I've ever played. It stands head and shoulders above the rest and is one of my favourite games of all time. If you're reading this comment and have yet to play it, what in the hell are you waiting for??
A perfect summary of why I love this game so much and why it's my favorite game of all time. As much as it's not necessary since the Switch version doesn't offer that much new, I just HAVE to buy this wonderful game again.
I have Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze on my Wii U and IT IS SO HARD!! I get frustrated on levels and boss levels and I die all the time! But with Funky Kong I will be almost invincible! I'm not sure if I should sale me Wii u one because I might do a comparison between the Wii U and Nintendo switch. But in my opinion Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze is just like the Wii U but better on Nintendo Switch!
Yeah I'm pretty comfortable with my wii u version until this one significantly drops in price (if it ever does knowing Nintendo games). I didn't even fully beat the original because of school, other games I was playing, and ultimately forgetting about it, so I should really get on that before replaying it. Still this looks like a good remaster and has the added benefit of being portable so that's great!
That's their capture, the game has absolutely zero fps drops whatsoever in game. Head over to Digital Foundry and you'll see. Its rock solid 60 fps at all times.
What if I suggested to you that Funky Kong might actually be DK Jr and in turn Donkey Kong's dad? It's just a theory but it seems to work, at least in my mind, can't believe I've never thought of this idea before.
I'm in an awkward position. I have a modded Wii U, with a pirated version of this game, but have yet to play it. I recently bought a Switch, and would love to play this game, but I find it hard to justify spending the full price ($80 here in Canada) for a game I have sitting at home, just to play it on the go.... and considering how I have seen it quite recently, sold brand new in stores on Wii U for $25.
I'm not sure this qualifies as a review :D You love it too much. I think I didn't hear a single negative thing hehe. I unfortunately compare it to the classics DKC 1,2&3 and the controls aren't as tight and mistakes less forgiving (like collecting K O N G and losing them all when you die). I felt much more powerful and in control in the classics. Still a great game this is!
I really, really loved the original and I would definitely take advantage of the portability AND it´s being released on my birthday. Oh, it will be really hard to resist buying this one, but I don´t want to support these kinds of ports that add nothing special to the game and are ridiculously priced. I am putting it onto my "buy when on sale" list (along with Kirby Star Allies, FE Warriors, Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition and Labo Robot Kit) as I think these kinds of games will get discounted soon.

This is one of the best games out
After my first semester of college is done next week AND after finishing Kirby Star Allies and BotW (yes, I haven’t played it yet because of Mario Odyssey), DKCTF may be next on the list! Haven’t had a chance to play it and I love platformers!
Now big question, will Funky Kong be a playable character or Assist Trophy in Smash?

If K. Rool and Dixie both get in (which is being speculated heavily among Smash fans), he would most likely be an Assist.
I could see him in his plane dropping barrels that explode mong the stage, that would be cool!
+Hector Well I don't really mind too many characters from the same franchise in Smash. Just as long as their not clones. I mean, we're gonna get more FE characters in Smash thanks to FE Heroes: Shadows of Valentia/FE Warriors. And then there's LoZ in case Skull Kid/or Midna won't be Assist Trophys(plus I kinda want the BOTW champions to be playable). And as for Pokemon, we'll only have Decidueye & whoever the most popular pokemon for Pokemon Switch.

unless you want to play as Funky Kong or play in portable mode majority of the time; the Wii U (assuming you have the system) version is a cheaper option. Especially when you can get the game now for around $20 new (part of the nintendo selects line) vs $60 MSRP

I’m 31 now and I will always love Donkey Kong. This was definitely a game I stayed up all night playing
Unfortunately, being one of the Wii U version owners, I don't feel compelled to dive back into TF that much. Funky Mode is nothing I would play anyway so that addition means nothing to me. I reeeally wish they could've made it free to choose any Kong outside the Hard mode as a main and not just Donkey. This was the only complaint I had about TF back in the day as I would love to main Dixie and have either Diddy or Cranky as a partner.
Can one person play as Funky and the someone else play as another Kong on Co op? or is Funky always on his own? I have only seen co op Funky Mode gameplay with Donkey and Dixie,Diddy, or Cranky.
@Gamexplain i showed my niece/nephew (new gamers) your review when we were deciding whether to get DK or Kirby. I went to stop it halfway through to switch over to games, but they liked your video so much they wanted to watch til the end lol. And they love their mario. Just thought that might make you feel good :)

I have a friend who let me borrow his DKTF for Wii U so I never had to buy it myself but the game is a blast and my life changed since then so I will preorder the game this time!

I feel you discount one big reason this version has extra value over DKC Tropical Freeze on Wii U. The Switch's portability factor. I don't have this game yet, but I really feel like the Switch being portable grants an inherent extra value to any Wii U port and makes them worth buying a second time. And notice how I specifically say I don't have this game yet, but I fully intend to buy the game eventually because I love this game to a ridiculous degree. I can gush and go on about it endlessly, just because I think it's that amazing of a game. And having this game for car trips or when out of the house for any reason? Yes. Please.

But i am wondering. No one mentions this if you get all the kong letters are there more levels. In the oringinal there was 3. In returns there was 1 and 8 others added in the 3ds version. I am hoping for a world 9 in this version like in the 3ds
I already own Tropical Freeze for my Wii U, but I am buying it to and 200% playing the game as Funky Kong, I would like to see how fun it is to play as him.
I never played tropical freeze only dk county returns but I loved that game and was thinking about picking this up as it looks the same but with different levels I was only really concerned it mightn’t be as good cause it’s not the game I’m remembering just a similar one as well as I thought all the levels would be ice levels with the entire island being covered in snow but based off the gameplay in this video that doesn’t seem to be the case, if your still replying to comments on this oldish video would you recommend a buy?
I beat it on Wii U but I just got it for $40 new from a GameStop sale. So ready to beat it again. Best DK game ever made.

For some reason I sold my Wii U copy a few years back. Regrettably. I really wanna play it again and my friends seem a lot more open to playing games on the Switch with me - so I'm gonna double dip. I found the boost to 1080p quite noticeable in Mario Kart 8 so looking forward to seeing it again here.

The last time I played a donkey kong country game was on the SNES. I got to play Tropical Freeze for the first time and I love it :) I never owned a Wii U

So Funky Kong is easy mode? not bad but I'll stick to playing it the way it's meant to be played, with Donkey Kong.
I died many times playing this game but once I finally made it to the end I can't put into words how satisfying it felt, not many games give you that feeling today.
They should have the option of letting you pick any song you’d like for each level and include the original music from the original dk country that alone would make the game that much better
DKC is one of my favorite platforming franchises, and because I never bothered to get the Wii U version, I'll definitely get this one
Don’t care I’m buying this again so I can co-op this time with my GF and my roommate.. and when I’m alone I’m going to plug in headphones and lay back. Game brought back serious memories of playing the original Donkey Kong Country trilogy, amazing times.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe needs Funky mode too - increased momentum off-road, guaranteed useful items in higher positions, blue shell immunity, etc
Which, in everyone’s opinion would you get first and why.... DK tropical Freeze OR Super Mario Bro’s U Deluxe, both for the Nintendo Switch of course... im torn.. ive not played either one of these games because i never got to get a wii u... and i love both franchises..
however i must say some of my best memories as a kid growing up was playing super mario world, and finding all of the stars, secrets, color ‘?’ blocks and star road, etc.
Do the new super mario bros U and DK:TF have secrets like that to find etc., anybody know?

I have no issue with Funky Kong, but he's way too OP and I was afraid there was no in-between with the more difficult normal mode and the very easy Funky Mode. But I know several people who will probably find DK Funky Mode (really should have a proper name) ideal.
First time going through, It's great so far. I love the challenging gameplay that a lot of games lack these days. I also grew up with the original DKC games :)
I 109% completed DKC Tropical Freeze on Wii U, but I do wanna play it again. I sadly lost my Wii U disc, so I'll probably get it again after I've gotten all the new releases I haven't yet played.
Agreed with this review in full. Wouldn't suggest double-dip (certainly not at full price) but for a first-time... Get it. This game is phenomenal and absolutely worth your time.
well at least you heard me kinda the last rant I mentioned and slightly corrected yourself with the 1080/720 issue but you still seem to think that the wii u which was only 1080p somehow made a 1080p game down to 720p and at least you did mention how a 720p switch can actually play in 1080 only by the dock, but still..... price wise I only paid $40 for it being a prime member and honestly never finished the wii u version so yeah the price is just fine for me as my list of switch titles grows and my back log keeps getting bigger and bigger across all platforms

Anyone that skipped the Wii U should definitely pick this up. This will become a classic platformer. Probably the best in the Donkey Kong Country series imo. AMAZING soundtrack too as a plus.
If you're in Funky mode in multiplayer, can the second player also be someone else than Diddy Kong?
DK:TF is fantastic. Easily my favorite DK game and honestly one of my favorite 2D platformers of the last 10 years, right up there with Shovel Knight
Well I'm glad it's finally getting the respect and attention it deserves. To this day I still listen to it's soundtrack. More than I did with DKC2 , which I always herald as number 1. Yeah I did own it on the Wii U but didn't play it as much cuz of the difficulty and also always pawning and repawning the Wii U. The farthest I ever gotten was World 3. So I may rebuy it to fully enjoy it and the Funky Mode. Heck I already rebought Mario kart and Pokken, might as well this one

Great game but making the price that high for a game that has been release 4 years ago is a shame. The saddest part is that people are ok with this and are giving more money than ever before to Nintendo.
It's not sad, it's called economics. Nintendo has a supply, we have a demand. Obviously the demand is still worth the value Nintendo is putting on the supply. If it isn't for you, don't buy it.

Joseph Listerman Why is it that Sony can release an HD remaster of Ratchet and Clank for $40, Activision remastering the entire Crash Bandicoot trilogy for $30, and countless hd collections like the Nathan Drake collection for $20? Nintendo is not poor company and they do not have to make their ports full price. Hell, Tropical Freeze was a $50 game at launch and they marked it down to $20 as a Nintendo Select. The value is not there anymore at all and these games should not be full price. It's a port of the Wii U version that made it's money before.
You stated yourself that " people are OK with this and are giving more money than ever before to Nintendo." If that's truly the case then their products aren't over priced. They may be too expensive for you but if that isn't the majority it doesn't matter to them. Essentially then no-one can say this product is over or under priced until we see how it does. Nintendo thinks that they will sell the game at $60 without taking a large hit to sales quantities vs. the increased sales (yet lower revenue) of a $40 price. We'll have to see.

Tropical Freeze could well be one of, if not the best game I've ever played. It stands head and shoulders above the rest and is one of my favourite games of all time. If you're reading this comment and have yet to play it, what in the hell are you waiting for??

I'm a fairly weak gamer so being able to play this gorgeous game without the painful difficulty sounds like heaven.
Platformers are one of my favorite genres, couldn't care less about the price since I never played it.
A perfect summary of why I love this game so much and why it's my favorite game of all time. As much as it's not necessary since the Switch version doesn't offer that much new, I just HAVE to buy this wonderful game again.

I have Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze on my Wii U and IT IS SO HARD!! I get frustrated on levels and boss levels and I die all the time! But with Funky Kong I will be almost invincible! I'm not sure if I should sale me Wii u one because I might do a comparison between the Wii U and Nintendo switch. But in my opinion Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze is just like the Wii U but better on Nintendo Switch!

Yeah I'm pretty comfortable with my wii u version until this one significantly drops in price (if it ever does knowing Nintendo games). I didn't even fully beat the original because of school, other games I was playing, and ultimately forgetting about it, so I should really get on that before replaying it. Still this looks like a good remaster and has the added benefit of being portable so that's great!
I still hope for a new(!) 3D-donkey like on the n64 🙏🏻

I think that's GameXplain's capture card, as digital foundry mentioned not having a single drop or hitch in the game (outside of the loading screens)
That's their capture, the game has absolutely zero fps drops whatsoever in game. Head over to Digital Foundry and you'll see. Its rock solid 60 fps at all times.
I haven't played tropical freeze before so i'm definitely picking this up tommorrow!
This is another gem that I loved on the Wii U and cannot wait to experience this again. All we need now is another game

What if I suggested to you that Funky Kong might actually be DK Jr and in turn Donkey Kong's dad? It's just a theory but it seems to work, at least in my mind, can't believe I've never thought of this idea before.
I'm in an awkward position. I have a modded Wii U, with a pirated version of this game, but have yet to play it. I recently bought a Switch, and would love to play this game, but I find it hard to justify spending the full price ($80 here in Canada) for a game I have sitting at home, just to play it on the go.... and considering how I have seen it quite recently, sold brand new in stores on Wii U for $25.

I'm not sure this qualifies as a review :D You love it too much. I think I didn't hear a single negative thing hehe. I unfortunately compare it to the classics DKC 1,2&3 and the controls aren't as tight and mistakes less forgiving (like collecting K O N G and losing them all when you die). I felt much more powerful and in control in the classics. Still a great game this is!
I really, really loved the original and I would definitely take advantage of the portability AND it´s being released on my birthday. Oh, it will be really hard to resist buying this one, but I don´t want to support these kinds of ports that add nothing special to the game and are ridiculously priced. I am putting it onto my "buy when on sale" list (along with Kirby Star Allies, FE Warriors, Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition and Labo Robot Kit) as I think these kinds of games will get discounted soon.
I miss Chunky Kong and Lanky Kong. They've been gone for FAR too long.
