Rayman Legends is the shit too! Great game. Would love to see Ubisoft make a new Rayman game revolving mainly around the music themed levels in Legends.

I mean...There is one mistake on the video, you said one of the best platformers on the system...I think most would agree its one of the best plaformers ever made...This game is damn near perfect XD
OutgoingOtaku Yeah, it's so good in so many ways. Beautiful art, great music, great level design with so many ideas that build on and combine with each other in interesting ways, level variety, perfect controls, great set of characters that play differently, challenging, lots of quality content, rock solid frame rate. Can't find a fault with it.
What do you guys like about it? Genuinely curious. Because I see your comment echoed by many in the Nintendo community. And I consider myself a fan of platformers. I admit I'm probably not even halfway through the game, but Tropical Freeze just doesn't pull me in like other platformers. I've had it since late 2016, but I've only played it a handful of times. Does it get more interesting the further you go?
TheKingUpNorth Don’t worry man you’re not alone. I can appreciate the game is good but I’m definitely not getting “best platform ever” vibe from it, like at all.
thkingupnorth it really is though... and this coming from someone who thinks super mario world is the best game of all time. Tropical freezes level design and soundtrack are so charming, my eyes watered on a couple levels. Its just masterfully made... 200%ing the game was some of the most fun ive had in a platformer
Just watching the gameplay of this game makes me feel good. The music alone brings back so many good memories of the original three games. I don’t own Switch yet, but I am going to buy it just because of DKC. Thank you Retro Studios!
no it doesn't the music sounds too bumbling happy go lucky most of the time feeling like it was disconnected from the atmosphere... but then again what atmosphere all the enemies looked like something out of a goober book made for children.
Yeah, they really should have ported Returns as well. Would have worked well too, because then we can have a version of the game with a good framerate AND without waggle controls.
I can’t wait to play this again! Absolutely one of my favorite Wii U games and Donkey Kong Country in general are some of my favorite games of all time. They’re just fantastic with amazing sound tracks.
One of the best 2D platfomers ever made, and I couldn't be happier to have it with quicker loading times and smaller file size on a portable system no less! The future is now!
A difference I noticed too is that some sounds come out of the gamepad’s speakers such as when you hit the ground. A small touch that gives more immersion that is unique to the Wii U.
Really weird how this can't run at a native 720p in handheld mode, seeing as even in portable mode a Switch is more powerful than a Wii U. Perhaps the engine is catered too much towards the Wii U architecture, which could've caused problems in porting it over?
LemoByte 648p to 720p is hardly a difference when comparing battery life. Maybe a day 1 patch will increase portable mode to 720p. No idea why they couldn't make portable mode 720p, considering the fact that even portable mode on the Switch is more powerful than the Wii U...
The wii u is more powerful than the switch in handheld mode when it comes to the GPU but not the CPU. Thats why this game has a higher resolution. But other games that were more cpu focused played better on switch than on wii u
Great! :-) I missed out on Tropical Freeze on the WiiU, but thought about going back for it. When I heard that it was coming to Switch, it felt like the better choice would be to get it there instead. This video seems to indicate that I will be well rewarded in waiting as it keeps everything wonderful about the original with a nice boost in graphics, some extra content, and of course, the Switch's signature ability to play it anywhere big screen or small! :-) Definitely on my "get" list, this one! :-)
You just convinced me to pick this up when it releases. I'm very much looking forward to this game especially since I didn't get to play it on the Wii U. Very nice video.
Bullet Bill Unfortunately where there's a channel dedicated to multiple platforms, there's casual fanboys who get salty over what they can't play. All because they chose not to buy every console.
terria 88 for example Outsidexbox channel has a great community since their "comment of the week" section encourages people to be funny rather than se insulting.
Probably further downclocking the GPU to preserve battery life. I assume they found the sub-native resolution to be negligible in such a _sidescrolling_ game. Otherwise, the decision makes no sense whatsoever. The Switch would have no problem running this game at 720p. Breath of the Wild was made entirely for Wii U's hardware and was quickly ported over to the Switch's hardware (and comparably alien architecture) in less than a year. Breath of the Wild runs substantially better in portable mode on Switch than on Wii U (framerate drops night and day less frequent and dramatic on Switch). Breath of the Wild is also far *FAR* more technically demanding than DKC even at 30 FPS.
Walther Penne -_- You do realize the GPU runs around 768 MHz docked, right? Placing the Switch in the dock doesn't magically change the hardware form factor. The current method for heat dissipation is more than enough to keep the system within safe operating temperatures... If stock wasn't enough the Switch launch would comprise north of a 90% failure rate. Yes, it's most likely battery drain, as even if the system was pulling dock frequencies there wouldn't be a risk of thermal failure (unless you blocked the fan). Base clocks for handheld is indeed just north if 300 MHz, but also documented is around 380 MHz for "boost mode". Where you got 500+ MHz eludes me.
Takeaway, an all around upgrade. Wii U ran this game at 720p/60fps on TV mode and 480p/60fps on tablet (assumption here, could be lower). Switch runs at 1080p/60fps and then 648p/60fps in handheld mode. So yes, it's sad this doesn't run at the native resolution of the handheld but I agree a fixed 60fps framerate is preferred. And the load times being 1/4th of those on the Wii U at many times is a welcome change. I've owned the Wii U version both physically and digitally (thanks former Club Nintendo), and will now be buying this edition next Friday for sure.
TheSpaceKing12 It was already on the 3DS for less. And in what world does a game increase in value after four years? This isn’t a collectors item. It’s a standard port of a game.
Bought this game a few months ago for my switch just because I wanted to support it because I remember how much I loved the first one and what an impact it made on me, but I've been busy with Call of Duty and haven't gotten around to it. Anywho, my tv busted, so I have to wait a week for the warranty repair. I decided I would play this in the meantime and omg.... I forgot how much I love 2d platformers. Both Cuphead and Tropical Freeze have reminded me how fun and addicting these games are. Sometimes we think that 2d games are purely nostalgic and don't hold up to the fun of modern 3d games, but that is simply not the case. These games are just as fun as anything out there and Retro did an AMAZING job bringing Donkey Kong Country back. What an amazing studio.
the handheld resolution is a bit weird though. surely you would expect a full 720p when it already runs flawlessly at 1080p in docked mode. and don't forget that the Switch is outperforming the Wii U even in Handheld mode... this seems to me like they didn't have enough time to fully optimize the game for Switch.
Fantastic Game. Retro Studios turn everything they touch into gold. Probably the single best Western developer in the world. And of course the performance is flawless, and at 60 FPS. This is the same company that made Metroid Prime, after all. I owned it on Wii U, and I'll be trading in that copy to put toward buying it on Switch. No-brainer purchase.
This game is a work of art and is truly as great as the SNES titles. The main thing I noticed right off the bat in the switch version was the load times, soo much faster!
Even though I'm really not very good at this game (as other folks have pointed out, It's pretty challenging) I really enjoyed it and will buy it over again for Switch. There's such a lot of love gone into the game, and it's great to see it coming to a wider audience this time around.
Giancarlo R Yes. This is an obvious case of trying to cash in on the success of the Switch. They are counting on Switch owners not having access to the cheap Wii U version.
Heck, this game is on the Wii U's Nintendo Selects section for $20. It's getting a bit ridiculous seeing each and every 1st Party Nintendo game priced at $50-60 even when the content isn't always abundant between them.
Wow, this really goes to show how much faster cartridges are over discs. Crazy. As someone who grew up with disc-based games I never really understood how much faster cartridge technology is. Although I own a SNES and all that and the cartridges are faster on that than modern games, I’ve never seen a direct comparison between a disc-based and a cartridge-based version of the same game.
It's good to see that Tropical Freeze runs at 1080p docked, but it's kinda weird that the game can't hit a rock-solid 720p undocked. That said, we we need to be careful this week. *Avengers: Infinity War spoilers are running rampant across the internet* , & the last thing any of us want is for you (or me) to be spoiled. So if you don't want to be spoiled, *DO NOT SCROLL DOWN* !!!
+Neoxon Han Solo fights Thanos! You can figure out who wins this fight. Movie Spoiled! Sorry! Seriously good luck, just avoid social media until you watch it. Happy Gaming!
Slightly disappointing to hear it’s not 720p in handheld mode...this was going to be a day one purchase but now I may hold fire to see if they can patch it to reach 720p.
MOHAMED Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure it will look great, I just wish they could’ve got it running at 720p with 60fps. I tend to use my Switch solely as a handheld console.
Yeah, Tropical Freeze Switch is literally my favorite game of all time! First game I ever 100 percented. If you’re thinking about getting it, it definetly is worth the price.
They should've done a Switch port of Returns while they were at it. All of the new content from the 3DS version, but with the performance of the Wii version and at a full 1080p would make for a definitive DKCR experience. It would also have made the $60 price point easier to swallow.
I'm as shocked as I am disappointed to hear that it doesn't hit 720p in portable mode. Especially for this price point. Seems like it should not have been a hard goal to reach
Because the game is worth 60 dollars. I never owned a wiiu so this is new to me and I'm fine with the price, with how most games are today it's still a better value
I don't understand how $60 for Wii U ports is acceptable. Bayonetta 1 and 2, Donkey Kong Country TF and Hyrule Warriors are all Wii U games that cost $60 years ago and nintendo does minimal work for the ports and charges the same $60 as if it was a brand new game. Meanwhile Sony brings games like Wipeout Omega for $40 as a port of the PS3 and VIta games. Plus they made a VR mode for free. Nintendo is just double dipping and really taking advantage of customers.
Probably for battery life. Otherwise the decision would make no sense from a technical perspective. Nintendo must have found the difference negligible.
trapez77 That doesn't mean anything. 480p is 480p regardless. All downsampling would do is give the look of anti-aliasing. Same thing as 4k to 1080p. Except a native 720p would looked markedly improved. 480p is massively lower in pixel count than 720p. No amount of AA will compensate. It will still be very blurry by comparison.
I was going to buy if it was $50 Canadian. Don't get how Crash Trilogy releases at $40USD, Ratchet and Clank PS4 $40, SotC Remake $40 etc. But this is going to release at full price as a port of a 3 year old game and a "easy mode with a different character" lol. That's the dumbest thing I've ever seen especially when 3 years ago it released at $50 lmao. No thank you. I'll buy when the price drops. Trust me I'll wait and buy it. Don't think because people aren't going to just suck nintendo off, they're not interested. I just won't accept nintendo's BS
Because Crash games have been sold to 150 million people on PS2, another 80 million people on PS3, and 15 million people on Vita over a span of 2 decades. DKC, on the other hand, has sold to 13 million people on Wii U, just a few years ago. That's why.
...You do know the DKC franchise has been around for almost 30 years, right? Also > Crash on Vita Are you counting the PS One classics? Because that's the same as counting the Virtual Console on the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS.
I loved this platformer to bits..it was SO fun, and people are right, it was the greatest sooo, been tempted to get this for the switch, and i never beat the one on the wiiU but the system tbh is not on my mind anymore, and i have it put away Love seeing the improvement on switch..but ive been going back and forth debating if i should double dip..
Got a late birthday gift, being a $25 Gamestop gift card, and I'm DEFINITELY putting towards this masterpiece. Have a Wii U, but never got it as never appealed to me back then. However, after having my "Ori and the Blind Forest" epiphany, lord does this appeal now!!!
i'm on an hd pc with a huge screen and i can not notice the differences unless you zoom it in. is that where we have gotten to now? nothing can be enhanced any more than it is to see with the naked eye?
What I'm implying is that it got a luke warm launch because the Wii U wasn't doing well. A LOT of Switch owners never played this, so it's virtually a new game.
The game is easily good enough to warrant $60. This is less of a port and more of a true launch for a game that saw little fanfare because of the platform it originally came out on.
calling tropical freeze a masterpiece within the first minute of the video tells me I've come to the right place

I always notice how DK’s fur is more clear on Switch, due to the resolution increase of course.
I like the look of the new nose in profile, but it's ugly head on.
One of the best platformers ever. The original loading screen really did annoy me. So glad to see it getting an upgrade.
Gonna be a good time playing.
Shame we couldn't have got a DK Double pack with this and DK Returns
BlockABoots I hoped for this but I reckon we will get the 1st game at some point after the 3rd one is hopefully announced at e3 this year.

The same way you go from 1080p docked to 720p handheld. 650p is so close to 720p, that's pretty small potatoes to get in a fluster over

Although I own a SNES and all that and the cartridges are faster on that than modern games, I’ve never seen a direct comparison between a disc-based and a cartridge-based version of the same game.
The only main game I want from the Wii U now is wind waker please port that Nintendo
You mean a *GAMECUBE* game? They're not going to port a port, the VC is more likely to have GC games.
Jack Son no I mean the Wii U wind waker version
Can't wait to get this game!! Looks sooo freaking awesome
WindWaker on Switch plz
Never got to play this game, really looking forward to play it on my switch
It's good to see that Tropical Freeze runs at 1080p docked, but it's kinda weird that the game can't hit a rock-solid 720p undocked. That said, we we need to be careful this week. *Avengers: Infinity War spoilers are running rampant across the internet* , & the last thing any of us want is for you (or me) to be spoiled. So if you don't want to be spoiled, *DO NOT SCROLL DOWN* !!!
+Neoxon
Han Solo fights Thanos! You can figure out who wins this fight.
Movie Spoiled!
Sorry!
Seriously good luck, just avoid social media until you watch it.
Happy Gaming!
Sursurk the last superhero movie I watched was Logan.
u mean 1080p the switch runs it at 720p trust me i tried it
I'm going to add this to my library, looks like a fun couch Co-op game to play with my wife.
This game and the original one on the Wii is so underrated to normies.
Fuck normies and jannies.
Great video 👍🏽 , excited to play this game again on my switch.
Make your ports 30 dollars nintendo
Honestly one of the best platformers I have ever played. And I have to agree, my favourite part is the seamless music transitions
+Jon Flowers
I really, really doubt they'll put any more effort into this port except if someone finds a (game breaking) bug that needs to be fixed.
Tbh looks the same to me, it is a great game on the Wii U, got it when it came out
Only difference is the $60 dollar price tag
With funky kong.
Yeah, Tropical Freeze Switch is literally my favorite game of all time! First game I ever 100 percented. If you’re thinking about getting it, it definetly is worth the price.
Hoping they port Star fox zero....i would have really enjoyed that game if it was not for the controls
Eastyy Might aswell make a new one instead.
I was fine with the controls. That game is just unbelievably bad to come out of Nintendo and Platinum. Enjoyed Guard though
They should've done a Switch port of Returns while they were at it. All of the new content from the 3DS version, but with the performance of the Wii version and at a full 1080p would make for a definitive DKCR experience.
It would also have made the $60 price point easier to swallow.
$60 for this is pretty bad when you hold it up to other remasters like the BioShock collection and Batman Return to Arkham
One of the best platforming games I've played in recent years but man, it was hard as nails!
we need swotch with OLED screen
BAYDROID ! Games/ Movie/ Review yes a swotch
No.
BAYDROID ! Games/ Movie/ Review Noo, we ned a swotch that powerfull
120hz display? :o Would be sick for indies.
we need a 4K 144Hz OLED screen on SWOTCH
This is one of my favorite games, ever for many many reasons. I wasn't gonna buy it again on switch but... I think ill treat myself for my bday.
I'm as shocked as I am disappointed to hear that it doesn't hit 720p in portable mode. Especially for this price point. Seems like it should not have been a hard goal to reach
Joel Mais It's 1080p docked, sub 720p in portable.
Murphdawg1 gaming that was a typo, thanks
It is bizzare, considering undocked Switch is more powerful than Wii U.
Walther Penne The dock doesn’t have it’s own fans, the switch is still cooling itself on its own while in docked mode.
guys what the heck are u talking about i played for about 5-6 hours in docked and it wasnt hot it was cool
Thanks for this video I’m glad I preordered this game today
Why is this game so expensive?
Fury 2k because Nintendo slave fanboys will buy it no matter the price it’s really sad
Because this game is well worth 60$.. Trust me
Games this old are usually like 20€ on sale...20-40€ price at most.
I had this for wii u. I think i bought it for 20 euros . No way in hell i will pay for it 60euros. Nintendo is just way to greedy.
You got it.
Got what?
So undocked it's a downgrade from the wii u
If you played with the WiiU gamepad before which only has a 480p screen no,
also 720p looks worse on TV that on a 6" screen
And play docked is a upgrade to 1080P on Switch.
Probably for battery life. Otherwise the decision would make no sense from a technical perspective. Nintendo must have found the difference negligible.
Mr. Sir it was 720p down-sampled to the gamepad screen
trapez77 That doesn't mean anything.
Excited to add this to my Switch library :)
Nintendo 60Fps
Ps4 Pro/ One X 30 Fps
Great video, good info. I have the game on Wiiu but will definitely buy it for the switch may 4th. :)
Nowhere near enough changes to justify a 60 dollar price tag.
nah im good
You weren't going to buy it anyway. Tropical Freeze is one of the best platformers of all-time.
That's why.
I mean, I already bought the Wii U version, so... Nah, probably not.
...You do know the DKC franchise has been around for almost 30 years, right?
Also > Crash on Vita
Are you counting the PS One classics? Because that's the same as counting the Virtual Console on the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS.
I loved this platformer to bits..it was SO fun, and people are right, it was the greatest sooo, been tempted to get this for the switch, and i never beat the one on the wiiU but the system tbh is not on my mind anymore, and i have it put away Love seeing the improvement on switch..but ive been going back and forth debating if i should double dip..
Where witchard today?
Never bought this on Wii U but picked this up day 1 on Switch and I'm loving it.
Not a single frame drop? Ok first day buy.
GeneralTrueFocus It was the same story on Wii U. Not a single frame drop in both versions of the game.
I don't like how they changed his nostrils on Switch. I prefer the old ones.
i'm on an hd pc with a huge screen and i can not notice the differences unless you zoom it in. is that where we have gotten to now? nothing can be enhanced any more than it is to see with the naked eye?
Basically a 4+ year old game for 60$. I'm sorry, but that's a ridiculous price point for such a bare bones port.
Yeah, like 40 would've been kind of ok, or maybe with DKCR bundled but 60 just for that port is too much, especially when you already own it on WiiU.
Oh no, rational people in a Digital Foundry comments section. Keep your heads low.
If you don't like it, just buy the Wii U version. Personally, I think $60 is just fine for a proper release of this game.
soviut it has its proper release four years ago.
What I'm implying is that it got a luke warm launch because the Wii U wasn't doing well. A LOT of Switch owners never played this, so it's virtually a new game.
I got a Donkey Kong Country tropical freeze ad before this video lol.
Exact same for 60$ meh
toppdogg2k17 this is my only gripe. And knowing Nintendo it'll be $60 until our sun dies out.
The game is easily good enough to warrant $60. This is less of a port and more of a true launch for a game that saw little fanfare because of the platform it originally came out on.
soviut
No. Its a shameless cash grab, just like most of nintendo's ports.
soviut Nintendo CALLS it a port. Stop trying to convince people that the truth relative here.
toppdogg2k17 waiting for an ebay sale is the best option. Paying $60 would only encourage this lame buisness practice.
Excellent analysis!
And people complaining about Sony Remasters that offers a lot improvments over PS3
But it's Nintendo, they're always right. Even a crappy side scoller should cost $10 more for a port.
Also muh portability
Why complain about remasters? I never got the chance to play those games and I'm loving each one when its releases.
Yes!!!
ですLoli Hunter people complaining about ports when most modern ports are 30 dollars or more
LUL
Cant wait to try out Okami and Spyro. ^-^
thanks John
