New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe on Switch: A Basic Port or Something Better?

- It's the complete package - a superb game boosted to 1080p on Switch. Plenty of visual changes make the cut, but there is perhaps a hankering to see more from future Wii U conversions.
UPDATE [9/01/19]: the 13GB Wii U file size mystery is solved. The understanding is that extra videos are stored on the U + Luigi game disc, and digitally too. Meanwhile Switch avoids taking up so much space by simply offering an option to stream them - making 2.5GB possible for a cartridge.

The Wii U combined package has Hint/Bonus videos as actual video files in the data which is reason for it's inflated size. I know. It's silly.
rashef However, they didn’t even bothered to investigate why that was happening. What's up, DF?
DF videos are getting lazy. Hes reviewing the game in the first half instead of focusing on the tech aspect so they can stretch the length to 10 mins and they still miss a ton of stufd
@@Salty_der_Regenmacher i mean, geezus Tom, did you do any research?
Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Super Mario Sunshine,,Pikimin Series and Super Mario Galaxy Series needs to be remastered on Switch
@Walther Penne Pikmin 4 is in development lmao, stop mindlessly hating
@Walther Penne you never know with Nintendo Wind Waker HD ran pretty well. We can't say the others will run at 30FPS. Nintendo just needs more 3D remasters for the switch. Not saying they'll all run at 60 but at least upper 50s would be good. And Super Mario Sunshine ran at 30 FPS on the Gamecube with the Switch being more powerful than the Wii U and somewhat more powerful than the Xbox 360 and PS3 from what I heard I would be surprised if they were to pull 60 FPS. I mean Sunshine is 16 years old. I never played a Pikmin game so I wouldn't know. But it'll be a disappointment for those games to run under 60FPS. Mario Galaxy Series is excellent but the resolution was a turn off for me even when I first played when I was 9 so it would be a very excellent improvement.
Better not be port
Shadow_ Playz what if instead of remasters you actually get new games? Wouldn’t that be out of character for Nintendo.
Wind waker has been remastered twice honestly the wii and wii u are enough

@@adriantoberememberedtho1467 RIP playing as Blue and Yellow Toad at the same time. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that mean it's impossible for all four players to play together with the same physics/without an "easy mode" character? That's a massive oversight if so, IMO.
The game is actaully decent for a NSMB game, the best out of all of them in terms of level design and content but charging $60 is a ridiculous price for this port.
Caio Coelho how do you know that? Why are you relying on imaginary sales figures based on other games and somehow think that means this game will sell well?
Because every Mario game sells well and the people who didn't own a Wii U will pick this up.
@Caio Coelho Yeah it'll sell well, that doesn't change the fact Nintendo is being really shitty about this price.
@@bobsnob3073 Why? It's the original price when it came out along with Luigi U.

@@warturtle6303 But there hadnt been any info about new levels or such things so what is going on? the Deluxe means that something is refined, and this game basically is refined over the original one
I know it's a stupid nitpick, but I do wish DF would stop saying they're 'out of time' on their vids. This isn't TV (or live), you have as much time as you want.
Haha I always think the same

It's about that magic 10 minute mark.
Think of it like this: can he work on this video forever?
@Gavin's Friend this video has 2 ads
there's no reason for them to try and strech it to 10 minutes it's just the length
The reason for the bloated size on Wii U is the tutorial videos they added for Luigi U. If you have the base version it’s only a couple of gigs, but the Luigi U version jumps to 14GB with all the high-res videos. Ridiculous but that’s Nintendo.
That may be some of it, but the tegra chip has an impressive compression solution.
its a port that costs more than the original did at launch
Fierce Vinegar it costed $60 at launch. It’s not like what they did with dkc tropical freeze.
I feel like this should at most coated $30-$40 though.
And just like DK tropical freeze, it will outsell th original
it costed 50 at launch from what i remember
Hakan Cakir I agree. Cause there are what 30 million switch’s sold. Maybe more.
Looks great! Never played the Wii U version, and I'm a fan of the series. I'll be getting it digitally day one for double the coins. (:
How was it NOT 1080p when it was on Wii U? There’s nothing extravagant about these visuals
Wii U had a GPU equivalent of Radeon HD 4650 which is actually less powerful than a now ancient integrated laptop GPU like HD 4000 so this should answer your question.
The vast majority of WiiU games were 720p. This is on account of the system’s awkward technical setup. For starters it has to share resources it’s the tablet screen by streaming out the gameplay at 480p there. Secondly, the CPU is severely underpowered compared to even the Xbox 360. This game might not be graphically straining, but Nintendo builds its games with CPU in mind often. And lastly, this game was rushed out the door for launch of WiiU, as it was the only first party game of note on the system for al one time, optimization’s were a second though.
@@SpaceKingScot This game would barely be CPU intensive on the Gamecube. There is nothing that can be hard on the CPU with these 2D scrollers and besides even massively underpowered non-new 3DS CPU handles that gold collecting NSMB version just as well (gameplay feels very similar). Again Wii U also had a terrible GPU and only 1 GB of usable RAM which eliminates any chance of 1080p resolution I think.
Cutter Elf Well if Smash Bros Wii U could run at Native 1080p with much higher visuals, there’s no reason this game couldn’t.
@@supersmashmaster43 You are right I didn't know that but that game seems to be the outlier when all the other games were running at 720p. Probably a case of hardcore optimization. Maybe the constantly changing environments as you progress in NSMBU are more demanding to render than Smash 4 stages.

Your my favorite member of digital foundry! Looking forward to your next video!
if this costs $60 I'll pass.
You can get NSMBU + the DLC for 20-30 on the Wii U
Actually the combo pack is massive due to the super play videos.
If you buy NSMBU and the DLC normally you it clocks in at around 2.5-3Gb
Le Docteur but can you take it with you on the go? You can’t do that with the Wii U. That’s where Nintendo has this down. I agree that it should be $30-$40 new and not $60
Problem is, not a lot of people have the wiiu. Most people have the switch though.
Because they did so poorly on Wii-U Nintendo probably took a lose on development cost and now trying to recoup after pretty much what was a lost generation. I personally don't mind as these ports are all new to me and more than half of Switch owners. That said already have enough games on my plate probably find for half the price by the time I pick these ports up.
@@moultonlavagaming My $300 Console IS portable, the games just run on it like any other system. The software is just software, stop making the 'Muh portability' excuse for taking the Piss with the prices of really old ports
@@klehman215 No game on a modern console of such a small caliber can get away with the pricing of Nintendo's titles. So it's no excuse. Sony didn't bring GoW3 at full price to PS4, Uncharted was 3 games at full price etc. Only game that was going to was Last of Us and it came with the DLC a year later so it was basically just the GotY edition the way I looked at it. But people got mad and they listened and dropped the price before release. Every game that rereleases at full price gets hell and fails, then drops price in like a month or 2, Nintendo on the otherhand think it's acceptable to release a 6 year port of a side scroller with it's DLC for full price while Crash Trilogy, a reimagining of Ratchet and Clank, etc. won't even release full price. It's sad because instead of people fighting to get proper pricing and getting what you deserve for your money. People make horrible excuses for the BS. Like you can take it on the go!!!. Vita games are cheaper than PS4 and you can take them on the go, I got a PS TV too so I can play on the big screen as well. But no game has been priced over $40 other than like 3. It's no excuse
I just wanted to say that a few years ago you could get a NSMBU/NSLU combo pack for the Wii U for, like, 20 bucks brand new (EDIT: at least here in Europe, US apparently got it as a full-priced release for some reason, but my point still stands). Really disappointing release from Nintendo, they could have, at very least, also included NSMBWii.
Specter227 for you in Europe, perhaps. We got a combo disc in the States that was full priced.
Specter227 that’s true on the new super Mario bros Wii. But it’s Nintendo. They will always keep their value and Nintendo usually keeps their prices high. I loved the game back in the day but probably will wait on it.
Edit: I didn't realize that the bundle actually received a Nintendo Selects release in Europe. My initial point still stands that NA never received a discounted release however, and stuck around a high price point until fairly recently for the Wii U original release.
To end the comment off though, I'm not buying this. This game is fun, but it's not worth $60 at this point for a port, especially with no new content. Should have been $30-40.
@@moultonlavagaming Aslong people accept it, Nintendo will continue to over price their games.

NINTENDO, WHERE IS XENOBLADE X!?
Another great analysis DF Team! I'll be checking this out, when it releases tomorrow. I played and loved the original, and look forward to giving it another run in 1080p. I just wish they'd re-release Super Mario Maker and Super Mario 3D World on Switch. I'd buy those again.
I love almost every Mario game except the "New" Mario series, they're so soulless and all of the levels blend together and feel the same. I would've much preferred they remaster or re release Super Mario 3D World/Land, they're far more innovative and memorable.
Specially Champion’s Road stage in 3D World 😂
Yeah just commented the same. Something....missing.
I really wish people praised 3D World more. Most kept shitting on it because it wasn't the open 3D Mario game they wanted at the time. Bet they'd think differently if they played it now.
Yeah I remember having New super Mario bros 2. Sold it. Such a garbage and soulless game
The original New Super Mario bros has some soul to it. It was good for a portable like the DS and it was the first 2D Mario in over a decade. After they just shoved these games down our throat with nothing really different or new.
If I recall correctly the Wii U version hat hundreds of pre-rendered videos for secrets and farming strategies for all levels. That's what ballooned its installation size.
If I have to hear that god damn accepella chorus one more time...
AH-AH!
What's even more annoying is that the goombas and koopa's respond to the "HA!" in which they make a little hop which in turn messes up the jump timing.
Owlero that sounds wrong in a sexual way, should’ve said BAH instead lol.
You should probably check out the Giant Bomb clip with Jeff Gerstmann's "wah-wah!" He was definitely of the same opinion xD
That was my favorite part. Lol
I didn't get to play it on Wii U.But now I get to check it out tonight.
Man I can't wait to play this game. Super Mario world is my favorite Mario side scroller. With this I skipped out on Wii u so I prefer ordered immediately when they announced this
Merging Mario Maker into this game would've been cool for sure, but it's odd to criticize Nintendo for not having done it. It's not like they gave any indication that they were even considering something like that.
timg2727 Personally, I Hope Nintendo is working on a more ambitious SMM2 with additional skins (Land 1&2 and All Stars variants would be neat).
Xenoblade Chronicles X and Tokyo Mirage sessions need a port
I'd love to see X in 60fps. But it won't happen sadly.

Great work DF. I have played both Super Mario Bros U and Luigi U on the WiiU and had a ton of fun, I was in no doubt Super Mario Bros Deluxe was gonna look n run better on the Switch with more power. I won't be picking up Mario Bros Deluxe day one having already played it but anyone who hasn't played these games before or haven't played the full package should pick this up day one without hesitation.
A 1080p 60fps re-release of the Zelda WW, TP and SS would be amazing. Especially Skyward Sword I feel would benefit from 60fps.
Wind Waker would be the best due to the effort they put into that Wii U copy. That is the defacto best version of the game in my mind. Twilight Princess is more likely due to its popularity id imagine unfortunately, and they didnt really do much to it (maybe under the hood) to make it seem hard to port. Skyward Sword seems unlikely, they've officially had a stance of no interest in porting it at this time.
Well Wind Waker was in house made and therefore better upgraded in terms of gameplay, TP was made by a 3rd party, but actually TP had all its textures redone and WW was mostly just a new lighting engine.
I believe Aonuma teased SS not too long ago though, but I think WW has a good chance since Nintendo can handle the port themselves. :)
Sadly we won't see 60FPS for those games (at least not WW or TP), as their engines are tied to the frame rate. Whenever I play WW on my Wii U, parts with a lot going on (Gohma, Puppet Ganon), the frame rate tanks and the game will run at half its original speed.
I'm sure the engine is tied to the framerate in those two games (sadly) but I believe the slowdown is more an effect of the 2x buffered v-sync that always draws the framerate to the nearest 10, as in should the game not be able to hit 30, it goes all the way down to 20 instead.
I could be wrong though.
@@SturmAH Well shit, I didn't even know that. That'll definitely make the game suffer during intense load.
i'm impressed how many Switch ports of Wii U games has half the size and yet has added content to them. even if it's small new content, it's still pretty impressive!
Skyward Sword definitely needs an HD Remaster. Hopefully with the shaders used in Wind Waker, they would fit the artstyle very well and the game itself would benefit a lot from a higher resolution and better more refined motion controls.

That's a good reason to do it. And really, that's why I'm not against these ports. Even if I personally got the games on Wii U and don't see much reason to go after it on Switch, I do acknowledge that these games have a chance to find an audience they couldn't find the first time.
This game surprised me with how much I liked it. The level design and sheer fun factor was top-notch. Best of all the NSMB games for sure. I just hope they go for a push in visuals next 2D Mario.

60 dollars
Cuz Nintendo is lazy and incompetent. They want full price for this port.
It would diminish Super Mario odyssey’s life time sales potential to port over 3D world. A lot of people would think that 3D world is the “new 3D Mario game for Switch” if it made the jump. The port would sell really well, certainly. But would come at the expensive of how well the former will do long term. Long term evergreen sales being what nintnedo cares about most in their software.
Walther Penne did you just say switch can’t run 2 Wii U games? isn’t that exactly what’s been getting ported over to switch all this time all with improvements lmao
I'd agree that Twilight Princess and Wind Waker would both be fantastic on the Switch - not so much Mario Maker. Never played it, I'm sure it's great, but think about it - the system works well on the Wii U, and on 3DS, but both of those consoles place a touchscreen in your hands. The Switch does this too, but only in portable mode; docked mode would require a re-working of how a user interacts with the interface, which would mean we will probably not get a port of that any time soon, unless it's been in development for some time already. I'd suspect a sequel would be more likely.

The level design of this game never really appealed to me as much. It always felt like they were really throwing everything at you while you move as fast as possible like a bad Sonic game. Classic 2D Mario games like Mario 3 and Super Mario World felt tighter and more cohesive in their level design, like the designers had an idea of how you were supposed to approach something rather than trying to accommodate for a dozen different variables and shotgun blasting coins at your character.
I've been hoping and wishing they port Windwaker HD to the Switch. I only played a bit of it and I'd love to experience it in that really crisp HD version.

You really shouldn't be bragging about piracy, since it's illegal (it's classified as copyright infringement). also, there are still physical copies being sold at shops, both pre-owned and brand new, meaning it's relatively easy to get a copy.
wow the switch is something totally something that's unique in the gaming industry, an absolutely powerful hybrid handheld console
Switch with all these $20 games for $60. I'm beginning to regret buying it.
The reason Super Mario Maker could switch between styles, is because the New Super Mario Bros. mode was not 3D modelling/graphics, those are actually individual images just combined to make it appear like the original game (essentially they're 3D sprites). So in order to do this with Deluxe, they would have to rework it entirely to accommodate actual 3D elements.
Also the Wii U "definitive edition" with all components in one package has video hints/tips which blows up the size of the file.
Both of these are available in videos and online articles, so I don't get how DF is confused by a lot of things when they're supposed to be the ones telling us how everything is/explaining what's what.
In Mario Bros.- related videos should you say “first” or say “I’m-a- numba one yahoooo!” ?
neither
Looking forward to this. I never played the Wii U so for me it's a new game.
Same old shit as always with Nintendo.
But question, why is it that when the Playstation 4 and Xbox One first came out and received many remasters with various updates to the games, everyone had an issue with it and said we need more first party games, but Nintendo is doing just that and they receive a pass?
Because it's the first time these games are getting the portable treatment :P
I mean who doesn't want Dark Souls or Rocket League on the go?
The $60 price tag is unjustifiable tho
Yup and Sony or Microsoft sell their remasters 1/3 or even 1/4 of the original price while this is sold at a higher price compared to the original... Nintendrones are ready to swallow anything N shoves into their throats...
Portable play. Shouldn't be $60 though, but in Nintendo's mind, by including Super LUIGI U, you're getting two full games for the price of one
Because Nintendo launched masterpieces like Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade 2 or Super Smash Bros Ultimate with those remasters of a 13 million units machine while Sony was releasing Knack, Killzone and Infamous.
Sid Patil Bruh please portable treatment is your excuse? Really? Matter of fact that’s actually a fair point
if we were to get another WiiU port, I'd want Wonderful 101. easily one of the best games on the system.

I have OCD whenever you miss a star coin
Too bloomin' expensive. 50 quid? This re-release should be a 20 quid game max, especially as a digital download.
I have looked at both wiiu and switch NSMBU filesystems. For WiiU many assets are stored once in each level pack without any apparent reason. Some basic assets are probably present in a few dozen levels.
Both games use exactly the same compression with the same compression level so it is basically down to the duplicate files.
game 2012 - full price - Nintendo ""magic"" xd
BB You can play it on pc in 4K60FPS for free!!
being a HUGE nintendo fan, honestly i hate it when Nintendo fanboys go around defending these re-released games' price tags. it's just BS, is what it is. But well, can't do anything about the Nintendo Defense Force!
Loose Goose you can, just tell people about this BS then they won’t buy it and they’ll start demanding Nintendo to change the price tag!! 🏷
Never got a WiiU so I’m glad they’ve got a 2D Mario on Switch now!
This game did not need to be tested
Right. It was like 10 minutes and 40 seconds of completely pointless filler.
Did people assume it wouldn't be in 1080p or hit 60FPS when it waa undersold on the Wii U? Why wasn't this game already in 1080p on the Wii U anyway?
At any rate this game really isn't what people wanted to see tested.
Still waiting for that Halo MCC retest.
Exactly. I was hoping they'd do some testing or interesting games. Example until I took the chance and bought both, I didn't know if I could trust the Vita version of P3D and P5D because they're graphically about the same as P5. So I was thinking they'd probably run bad on Vita or look bad. It would have been nice to see that and see how Vita stacks up in such a situation. Or something. I don't know, but just something more worthy than an obvious port that was going to run 1080p 60 and 720p 60.
It did, any switch release is interesting on the technical side
Every single game test is worthwhile in my opinion. If you were so sure of this game's resolution, features, and framerate beforehand, then you simply shouldn't have watched the video.
@@VariantAEC This game could run at 1080p easily even in portable mode if they wanted to, using super sampling. It's really not that exciting to see something like this.
You guys should have shown off the Van Gogh style stage, that is one of this game's rare visual highlights
Oh look a 6 year old game full priced again and Nintendogs (AKA Fanatics) are super fine with this because "its portable" now.
Who hurt you?
yeah, they play on the bus because they havent got their license and havent got a car lol.
@@HipnotikHylian Why are you asking a question?
everyone I know who are Nintendo fanatics, myself included, agree that this game should not be full priced, especially since you can get the exact same game on Wii U for £20
Still gonna sell 10 million+ and there’s nothing your bitching and moaning can do to stop it. It’s a 2D Mario game on a successful platform. It’s going to sell shitloads. Port or no port. There are plenty of moms and children out there that haven’t played one of these since the Wii game, and said families thought WiiU was a tablet add on, and by extension, didn’t get a new system till the switch, likely for smash ultimate. So from Nintendo’s perspective, why not sell it for 60? It’s a brand new game to the vast majority of the potential audience.

BOi!
Galaxy was good too...
Right?
It doesn’t matter what resolution it is. This game is still an assault on my eyes and ears.
I don't get it it's quite a pretty game
Lol it does matter check the game out on pc at 4k resolution.
@@CEV1999 Wow, it's slightly better. DEFINITELY worth spending $1000s for that!
The wii u download version has a bunch of videos which bump the size.
If you buy the base game on wii u then get Luigi u as dlc the file size is closer to the switch version
Only 11million people had the Wii u. Honestly to most people who has a switch today would honestly considered this a new game! We know it's not but I never played it but I'm willing to pay 60 bucks for it because it's 2 games in one! Im surprised that they actually are porting these games besides letting it die with the Wii u
I'll pick this one up for sure. Looks fun.
"series best" lmaooo the level designs are massively uninspired
Naw this isn't it chief, the level design is superb.
No.
@@HipnotikHylian no, it is not. Superb desing was in Super Marion on Snes or in New SMB on Wii. WII U version is real shit in design.
Nope. It's actually the best 2D Mario game in terms of design. It's excellent.
Nah, it's the best since World.
3 Wii U games I still want: Xenoblade X, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Wonderful 101
3 we will most likely get but surprisingly haven't yet; the 2 HD Zelda ports from Wii U and Mario Maker like you said
Bowsette DLC please
Dead meme.
For info on WiiU :
MK8 sold 7,69M
SMBU sold 5,62M
SSB sold 5,07M
For Switch :
MK8D sold 11M
SSBU sold 10M (probably at 31th Dec 2018)
So this last port should reach 8M with ease and be a major sales booster for the Switch.
Should have just given us Super Mario 3D World instead. At least that game has an ounce of creativity and originality.
I do hope that port can still happen, and I myself would have preferred it. Only time will tell, though. This does seem to be filler to have a schedule filled while they get the new games prepared.
In the UK this game is £40 which is basically about $45 - $50 which I think is well worth it for all these levels and the fact Ive never played it before this.
UnionJackGaming superior exchange rate boss (until brexit happens)
@@barackobama2195 yeah trust me, over here we are all tired of even talking about Brexit...
UnionJackGaming just casually talking about politics on a video relating to a fun Mario game😂
@@barackobama2195 on the RUclips comment section this is actually quite refreshing lol.
