    There is nothing unusual about a blown engine or transmission in heavy construction equipment. If Parker has any sense he will send the blown engine and attached transmission to a rebuild shop so he has a new rebuilt engine and transmission as a spare.
    I recall the decision to rebuild an articulating bulldozer used to stack and recover coal at a large power plant in the late 1980's where the company spent about $1/2 million on a rebuilt engine, transmission, blade ball joints and rebuilt hydraulic cylinders and all new hoses, with a new modern operator seat. And that was with our own mechanics removing the old and reinstalling the rebuilt or new components. It took about 2 months. In the meantime they rented an articulating bulldozer - whatever that cost. It was cheaper than buying a new articulating bulldozer.

      when you're in the remote Yukon getting something as simple as a drive belt can take weeks.
      That said, these guys should always have an engine in a state ready to be dropped into a piece of equipment on hand so they can minimise downtime.

      They're in northern Canada. But tons of engine machine shops in Alberta. As the tar sands and massive equipment operates at a scale only in a few other places on the planet.

    Swapping engine just took 8 hours. Imagine the less time needed to service it regularly. But of course, we're talking about Parker Schnabel ; he never stop his equipments for maintainence. He'd rather have a day or two of breakdown. He literally pushing all of his machines until something blows up.
    I always believe if you take care of your machineries, those machines will take care of you.

      Added up over time? probably more than 8 hours, though of course not all at once, and seriously, this is how all of it works. Every miner operates the same way, run it till it drops, then fix it however you can as fast as possible to get it going again. And yet somehow it remains functional and economical for decades before replacing. I know people like to think they are brilliant in the comment section but do you really think any miner worth his gold hadnt already factored in the relative costs versus benefit of regular gear checkups and such versus waiting till it breaks down? The man runs a multi million dollar a year operation, he knows what he is doing.

Parker didn't make 600.000 as we would have liked him too and deserved too...he made 100k max if that due to labour and machine part expenses but still atleast he's earning and not losing....well deserved Parker ur grandad would be so happy for you and your decisions as your own man!!!❤👍

    Parker seems pretty smart, but Volvo is not cost effective in anything they make. Caterpillar hands down beats all others on parts availability service life resale worldwide. To go off brand that far North with a very short work season is Dakota Fred dumb.

    • @dootdoot1867
      @dootdoot1867 8 месяцев назад +1

      Volvo sponsors them and moves an entire crew up there. Otherwise you use cat. Or Komatsu as Canada's oil and gas industry runs off Komatsu with massive service and supply capacity up north.

    • @riptwan

      Cat are silly money for everything these days, had a fleet of new D6's and a fleet of 20 yo Komatsu and the Komatsu were 90% cheaper on parts and service plus cheaper to buy new than the cats
