He was the drummer for a band called The Relatives in 1968. Lynda Carter, later a well-known actress, was the band's singer. The group opened at the Sahara Hotel and Casino lounge in Las Vegas, Nevada, and played there for three months.

As a fellow drummer, I always love watching this scene. Radar can wail on those skins!!

I love the sudden cringe he gets at the very end, like he feels like he just screwed everything up, but then the camera instantly cuts to a thunderous applaud.

I love how he gets ALL into it, straight badass, then when it's over, straight back to shy old Radar. Lol great!

This was the 2nd and last time Radar ever played the drums on the show. I wish they would have done more with that, since, as we can see here, he's damn good.

Funny thing. I've known a few great musicians with characters like Radar. The only time they're not self-conscious and nervous is when they're fully concentrating on playing so they forget their inhibitions for a while and let you see their real selves. Not sure if Gary is like this, or just extremely good at portraying it - but either way he totally nails it.

Cool as ice. You can tell hes actually playing live if you watch the symbols, take into account any minor dubbing lag.

I grew up in Delavan Wisconsin, Radar's (Gary Burghoff) hometown. He was good friends with two of my older sisters. He was voted the most talented of his class. The yearbook picture had him posing with an instrument. His mom was often the chorographer for the HS Musicals. He also starred in the Broadway production of "Charlie Brown". He also had a slightly deformed left hand. When you watch mash, he cleverly hides it in plain sight.

So Radar should have been in the Army band, far away from Korea!

I never knew he played! He played very well. Loved it.

This moment is an absolute favourite, and learning Gary Burgoff can actually play drums makes it even more awesome as others said you can see him really getting into it really in the zone and it’s absolutely beautiful!

I grew up way hung MASH, cuz my dad grew up watching it (as it first aired) and I've seen many, many episodes. It wasn't until I decided to watch the whole thing, beginning to end, that I found out Gary Burghoff was a jazz drummer. Saw this scene earlier tonight and was like, "Hot damn. He's not miming that. He's playing that!"
