This was in 1987 at the NAACP image awards and they were honoring Dionne for her work with AIDS. This song was originally sung by her and Luther was her good friend who remade it. And baby, it's just like hearing it for the first time for me. I often view this clip on RUclips and still get chills to this day. He TORE THIS UP !!!! R.I.P. indeed KING.

This was Dionne’s song (the reason they kept showing her) and she was so blown away by what he did to the song she said she would never sing it again.

I love this performance. Luther knew he was going to wreck shop when he stepped on stage. This was him at the height of his career. One thing I loved about Luther - is when he did these "tribute" performances. He would slay. Regularly. And well he knew it. I don't want to say - in case someone else has requested it already - but his tribute to MJ....Man In The Mirror...MJ's 30th Anniversary celebration... We got to see Luther murder ER'BODY on that stage with him..before he even sang one word...LOL.

Back story: Dionne and Luther had a falling out and wasn’t speaking to each other so when he looked directly at her and sung “I was wrong, and I know it, forgive me honey” he was actually apologizing to her directly into the song.

The thing that I loved about Luther, JJ, is he was a masterful singer. He was a consummate professional...his shows started at the exact time the ticket said! EnVogue and Anita Baker had problems with Luther when they toured with him because Luther didn't work on CP (colored people) time...."the show starts at 8:00 pm, not when you feel like it!" His remakes of older songs were incredible and well as, many songs he wrote and produced for himself and others. Rest In Power, Mr. Luther Vandross.

When you got it, you got it and Luther had it in spades. I saw this at the time. Watching it again I was smiling and tearing up at how amazing he was. Whenever I heard him cover something I. could never like the original after he Lutherized it. One of the last truly great male singers.

Classic Luther from his first solo album. This was actually an album cut not released as a single but got popular when late night DJs started playing it on quiet storm sets and became over the early 80s years a Luther standard!

I remember that live, and this clip is disappointing because when he announces her name to come forward for the award. She was so impressed with his singing, all she could say was "You can sing...no, I mean you really can sing" it was cool, especially since she sang the song first in the 60s for Burt Bacharach ;0
