@ed k, imagine how Dionne Warwick felt sitting there listening to Luther singing this difficult song that *only* she had done justice to until Luther. You could see it on her face that she was so proud of him.
No pyrotechnics, no light show, no dancers. Just raw, beautiful talent from our creator. He had the audience enthralled, and gave me chills. No one better. Ever.

@@davidesmeyer9825 You probably meant to say Luther sung the song as his legacy song, but he did not write it. Actually, Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote this song. He was better than most of the vocalists back then, too. It's synonymous to watching Jordan, LeBron, Peyton Manning, or Serena Williams dominating in their respective sports. They were the elite of the elite during their times.
@@Freewarrior2 I agree but I feel like he’s the greatest of all time. I’ll admit, I’m only in my late 30s so I’m hardly qualified to make such a statement but to me, Luther topped the Teddy P’s and Marvin Gayes of the world. Thoughts?
Amazing. He was locked in. The audience was locked in. Everybody there was aware of how special the moment was and everyone gave themselves to the moment. You felt the synergy between the performer and audience. It was one man singing, but you felt the communal effort behind it. It was spiritual. Such an elevated level of performance art. This is the Book of Luther in the Bible of Performance.
I am 64 and white and when I die and have to come back down to earth again, I will ask God to bless me with a voice like Luther!!❤️☮️🙏🏻 There ain’t no other!
Im 69 and white too but would wAnt to go back in time to be able to see the greats like Luther Teddy Pendergrass they were cruelly taken far too soon i love them proper singing the right way nothing these days compares even slightly to these greatsproper singers with proper words and music not the s, t that gets pumped into kids these days thats just some p,,,k talking s.,t
Yes he is. If music like this were played instead of the stuff they call music now, I truly believe the world would be a better place. This just fills up my heart.
I've said this rarely, but I don't believe anyone can learn to sing with such 'feel'...I believe he was simply born with the gift! Thanks for such wonderful vocal ability.
Hearing this in 2022 , amazing pitch, voice, a true performer with class! Incredible, Absolutely one of the greatest live performances ever recorded in my opinion .. gone but not at all forgotten .we are all better for hearing this. wow! RIP Mr Vandross
Can we please get this man inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for next year please he deserve it straight up Luther Vandross deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
The hell with Rock an Roll Hall of Fame, Luther Vandross is way above them and so is James Brown Aretha Frankin and Whitney Houston. Legends don't need handouts.
It’s 2022 and Luther still isn’t in the Rock Hall with Michael Marvin and Sam Cooke. He’s been eligible since 2009. Madonna got in first ballot that year. He’s never been nominated
Why should we place all these great singers into this nonsense when they are dead? Why can't we recognise their giftings and talents whilst alive? Furthermore, I would not be at all surprised if Luther's family have to pay for the priviledge! Just stop....
What can I say I've always been infatuated with this man from the first time I ever heard his voice, still today when I listen to his music he melts my heart ❤️ looks so dreamy sounds the same, absolutely there is no singer ever that can compete with LUTHER
He sung, not lip synched, he SANG. I remember the first time I heard this and so many other songs of his. Had the honor of seeing Luther live multiple times. He gave us so much amazing music for many lifetimes. There will never be another...
there are so many more; approaching 50 and im like damn. Every one can sang, but I can crow a little but I dont earn from it. I learn; you here me. I learn.
I am here in March of 2024 and I remember when this aired. I still feel full of joy, romance and passion. This is a timeless classic. RIP Luther 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
There are good singers and then there are voices that can never be replicated even if you're a fantastic singer. This man, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, (imo) Otis Redding... iconic voices.
Before he started to sing, I like how he looked around the entire auditorium. He was looking at the audience like you guys have no idea what is coming. I'm about to mess all of you guys up for life. Many years later, I still believe this is the best performance I've ever seen....just an incredibly talented voice and a microphone alone on stage.
That’s professional by every sense of the word. Range, pitch, tempo is all precise. Dude was a legend and taken far too soon. Cannot think of any recent vocalists that can come close to this.
By far one of the most impressive vocal performances of all time. Just an absolute clinic… Not to sound cliche, but none today can really hold a candle to this, and that’s very depressing.. RIP

"I had the incredible fortune of attending Luther's concert not once, but twice. The first time, I was just 15 years old, and he graced Beaumont, TX, with his presence at our civic center. His vocal prowess astounded me and left a mark on my memory. Luther's talent is truly incomparable; there's simply no one else like him. It was a privilege to witness both 'big Luther' and 'little Luther' in action. His performances were nothing short of legendary, each one leaving me in awe."
I'm 57 I saw him at the last cool jazz festival in San Diego 1985, He came on last, And even when the equipment malfunction The professional he is kept singing right on through. That comes from dedication and knowing that the show goes on.🤫🤔
I have heard Luther before and I knew his voice was incredible. But this is my first time seeing him performing. I love how is just him in front of a curtain, the orchestra obviously behind, following his improvs, but a one man show in complete control of his audience, completely natural, in the moment, in every word, radiating his personality and humor, all in perfect pitch. What results from all this is that you feel like you just witnessed a miracle happening. Everything this man performed live should have been recorded.
Over the years, this has become my favorite live vocal performance ever. I had the privilege of seeing Luther live in person many times, starting with his 1st solo tour way back in either 1980 or 1981. In this video, he was truly at the top of his game, which wasn't uncommon, but there's something otherworldly good about this performance. You can see what I mean just by looking at the faces of the famous talented people who were used to witnessing amazing talent. They are transfixed!
I was fortunate enough in my musical life to witness Luther Vandross LIVE ! at the Philadelphia "Spectrum" on 10/2/88 with opener Sinbad! and co-headliner Ms. Anita Baker on their "The Heat" tour. ❤🔥 Incredible night. Tightest backing bands Ever. In the presence of Greatness. 🏆 Rest In Paradise, Luther. 🙏 NEVER forgotten. 💙

Alycia Cooper I said the same thing years ago, to my best friend about Aretha Franklin. I loved her since I was a teenager. I still have the first Album she ever made…in nearly mint condition. Aretha was my favorite singer.
A performance like this transcends the mere concept of music. Such vocal control, timing and so much emotion poured into one seamless gift to the audience. I'm just glad we are able to enjoy perhaps one of the best vocalists to have ever lived.
Im 56 yrs old now, got saved at the age of 27. The first worship music I heard was Don Moen. I use your music in my House meetings. I was recently in hospital for 8 days with Covid. It was rough. My lungs were infected and my blood was clotting. It was the hardest eight days of my life. I woke early each morning and worshipped God, many of your worship songs came to me. God was with me every day until I got over. Thank you for your dedication and devotion, you have blessed so many. God bless you.
I saw Luther at the Celebrity Theater in Orange County back in the early 1990’s. I had front row seats and Luther held my hand while singing “If Only For One Night.” It is one of the most cherished moments that I will always remember❤. You shared an amazing gift with this world. Thank you ❤
I know loads have said this here, but... This is a true vocal masterclass! I mean the control, timing, pitch, traversing from throat to stomach, breathing, emotion... it's quite unbelievable how effortlessly Luther does this. On top of that, the subtle yet enthralling showmanship, everyone in that audience was touched! Simply Magnificent!
I agree with you 100%... I couldn't had said it better myself... A master class on how a true, exceptionally talented singer can hold hold an audience in the palm of his hand with just his vocal talent. Not auto tuned, no flashy dancers, no flashing lights. just him on stage with a mic!❤

@@kwicksand12 I hear you!!! 🙏🙏🙏
It depends on the person. Now, people get famous for song writing, and they happen to have a voice secondary. That's the difference.
Thoughts?
Luther is probably the best male singer of all time...swoon. He is so missed.
When R&B still had Soul....
Yeah... (Lonnnnnnnnnnnnng sigh...)
Amen
Facts💯
So true.
….right, not so much today….
I am 64 and white and when I die and have to come back down to earth again, I will ask God to bless me with a voice like Luther!!❤️☮️🙏🏻 There ain’t no other!
Amen. I am latino, but I will do the same. No one like him, still today, for me
+
Im 69 and white too but would wAnt to go back in time to be able to see the greats like Luther Teddy Pendergrass they were cruelly taken far too soon i love them proper singing the right way nothing these days compares even slightly to these greatsproper singers with proper words and music not the s, t that gets pumped into kids these days thats just some p,,,k talking s.,t
All good, Dionne Warwick originally sang this, but it was written by two white guys.
That’s not how it works, brother!
His diction is perfect, he is sublime. ❤
Hello 👋 Kathy , how are you doing? Hope you are fine.
Yes he is. If music like this were played instead of the stuff they call music now, I truly believe the world would be a better place. This just fills up my heart.
@KeatingWoodman404 yes I'm fine
What happened to our real “soul music”??😂😂❤
Absolutely! When you sing live and your voice is just as amazing as the recording….GREATNESS!!! RIP Luther
God truly blessed him with this voice!
looks like he may have made Janet a little wet in her special little hairy hole...
NEVER Before and NEVER Again!!👏🏽❤️👏🏽
Can we please get this man inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for next year please he deserve it straight up Luther Vandross deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
The hell with Rock an Roll Hall of Fame, Luther Vandross is way above them and so is James Brown Aretha Frankin and Whitney Houston. Legends don't need handouts.
@@marquewallace solid. But for the sake of his family and legacy, it would be great! Coming soon.
It’s 2022 and Luther still isn’t in the Rock Hall with Michael Marvin and Sam Cooke. He’s been eligible since 2009. Madonna got in first ballot that year. He’s never been nominated
@@marquewallace Genius all of them are in the Rock Hall that listed. It fing matters
Why should we place all these great singers into this nonsense when they are dead? Why can't we recognise their giftings and talents whilst alive? Furthermore, I would not be at all surprised if Luther's family have to pay for the priviledge! Just stop....
How far we have fallen so much CLASS wow. 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿 Bring this back.
Always my favorite singer, saw him many times in concert, still grieving this fabulous man. So grateful for his music. Gone too soon💔💔💔
THE BEST MALE VOCALIST OF ALL TIME!!!!
I miss Luther Vandross to this day! He was an entertainer's entertainer.
Irreplaceable. Beautiful spirit. Beautiful voice. ❤️
You are so right
What can I say I've always been infatuated with this man from the first time I ever heard his voice, still today when I listen to his music he melts my heart ❤️ looks so dreamy sounds the same, absolutely there is no singer ever that can compete with LUTHER
The G.O.A.T
I was blessed to see him in concert.
Miss him so much. May he RIP
He sung, not lip synched, he SANG. I remember the first time I heard this and so many other songs of his. Had the honor of seeing Luther live multiple times. He gave us so much amazing music for many lifetimes.
There will never be another...
You don't see that very often anymore...
Luther never lip synched
there are so many more; approaching 50 and im like damn. Every one can sang, but I can crow a little but I dont earn from it. I learn; you here me. I learn.
Fascinating singer
LET ME BE CLEAR, AS PRESIDENT BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA WOULD SAY: THERE IS ONLY ONE LUTHER VANDROSS!
Not a single earpiece. We are talking about singing "not hog calling" This was my high school song
Otis Redding does NOT get the deserved love for his voice. It wasn't just his lyrics, that man could SANG.
Greatest singers of All-Times:
Whitney Houston
Luther Vandross
That was beautiful, who peeped young Janet Jackson smiling from ear to ear..😊
Before he started to sing, I like how he looked around the entire auditorium. He was looking at the audience like you guys have no idea what is coming. I'm about to mess all of you guys up for life. Many years later, I still believe this is the best performance I've ever seen....just an incredibly talented voice and a microphone alone on stage.
Love your comment!
It's the way he narrows he's eyes just to say I'm now locked in and focused!! then history is made
Lucky u all that could be in flesh n bone
Off the chart charisma start to end
NOBODYS better than Luther Vandross! Nobody❤️
Never in my life will I ever get tired of hearing that voice. Luther love always
I'm a 73 year old whhite woman who has always enjoyed Luthers talent. I'm so sad that he's gone.
Hello 👋Mary, how are you doing? Hope you are fine.
Hi Mary sending best wishes to you ❤
Being a white woman means what exactly?
That’s professional by every sense of the word. Range, pitch, tempo is all precise.
Dude was a legend and taken far too soon.
Cannot think of any recent vocalists that can come close to this.
This is when you actually had to have talent to be on stage. Everyone knows how great Luther is. This was a gift for that audience.
By far one of the most impressive vocal performances of all time. Just an absolute clinic… Not to sound cliche, but none today can really hold a candle to this, and that’s very depressing.. RIP
Still one of the greatest vocal performances of all time!
Agree. One of the greatest live performances by an Artist.
@@polyprinz one of the greastest
looks like he may have made Janet a little wet in her special little hairy hole...
57 year old man , I cried too. Best live performances EVER !!! I Missed our great black men with great talent..Teddy Pendergrass can do it live too.
Brothas in this generation was everything 💯😍😍
67 here, still enjoy his music. STILL IN LOVE
Luther's generation was the last
I love this performance. Luther looks so wonderful, healthy and handsome. The crowd is in heaven.
❤ 🙏🙏Blessings forever GOD loves y'all too forever tell everyone you know and don't know. Jesus loves y'all too forever. Teach everyone how to see and enjoy their blessings too forever
His performances were nothing short of legendary, each one leaving me in awe."
that mans voice was taken for granted by so many....miss him.
RiRi you think that his voice was taken for granted? Please explain. I think he's the greatest balladeer of all time.
Bullshit what are you about
Mr. Luther Vandross will always be my favorite male vocalist of all time !
Oh I don’t think so. Everyone knows he’s a diamond.
🤨 huh, whatchew talkin about Willis?? We knew this man this man would be a legend after his first album
No one is perfect, but this performance was. I will give it a 100.
No,It’s a 120....
@@user-ir1gz7gl9x..and then some
April 2024, still watching
You’re not alone
Who's still listening in 2067?!
that's how dumb you sound
I can listen to this on repeat all day 🥹
At 49 years old I am probably the last generation that understands the quality of this type of artist .
M 35 & I understand it perfectly. All the way from SA🇿🇦
I'm 57 I saw him at the last cool jazz festival in San Diego 1985, He came on last, And even when the equipment malfunction The professional he is kept singing right on through. That comes from dedication and knowing that the show goes on.🤫🤔
25 here all in tears after watching this lol
I'm still in my mother's womb.
Who cares, we get it.
Black excellence at its finest!!!!
How dare make me cry like this???Rest in peace dear Luther Vandross 😍🥰🥰🥰
Luther was AN ABSOLUTE BEAST on that mic! ❤
This man had the perfect pitch. He could always tell a story with his voice. R.I.P The one and only Luther Vandross.
Man....they don't make music like this anymore. So glad I grew up during this era
I feel Good I'm 17 Now Turn it around I'm 71 So Blessed to still be around to hear dat Beautiful Song again
No male performer/singer could top this! We miss you Luther.
Vocally top 5 easily, that range is crazy. Rest easy Mr. Vandross.
And not 5th, 4th, 3rd or 2nd.
Waaow!!! Luther Vandross born as the Lion King of Jazz, soul and R&B!!! Still in love and captured by love in Aug 2023!!!❤❤❤❤
U can feel every note his song had meaning
Hello Tracy
How are you doing?
I always come back to see this performance. There will never be another Luther 😢❤
You are Absolutely RIGHT ‼️‼️
Now that I’m older, I appreciate this music
This is the greatest RNB performance of all time.
Damn…Luther made them feel every note of that song. Pure Gold 🔥
The way he caressed all those notes. Astounding performance from a talented trailblazer. Rest in the melodies Luther.
HE IS ICONIC...I AM 62 Y/0...WILL ALWAYS LOVE THIS MAN AND HIS VOICE...HIS VOICE TOUCHES MY SOUL EVERYTIME....GOD BLESS MR LUTHER...THANK YOU FOR LIFITING MY SOUL....
He was soooo handsome!!! And his voice was like melting butter!!! ❤
Everyone is drawn in when he sings.. Legendary
He and Whitney were the best live performers because they never sang a song the same way twice.
Alycia Cooper I said the same thing years ago, to my best friend about Aretha Franklin. I loved her since I was a teenager. I still have the first Album she ever made…in nearly mint condition. Aretha was my favorite singer.
I agree 100%.
Agreed
Whitney could not hold his jock strap
R. Kelly's live performances are also memorable especially "I believe I can fly"
A performance like this transcends the mere concept of music. Such vocal control, timing and so much emotion poured into one seamless gift to the audience. I'm just glad we are able to enjoy perhaps one of the best vocalists to have ever lived.
He was the very best, point blank and period. ❤❤❤❤
Velvet voice, a beautiful looking man...never a bad word after he has gone RIP
The most perfect singer
LEGEND!!!!!!!!;
Mercy!!
There will never be another Luther Vandross
Im 56 yrs old now, got saved at the age of 27. The first worship music I heard was Don Moen. I use your music in my House meetings. I was recently in hospital for 8 days with Covid. It was rough. My lungs were infected and my blood was clotting. It was the hardest eight days of my life. I woke early each morning and worshipped God, many of your worship songs came to me. God was with me every day until I got over. Thank you for your dedication and devotion, you have blessed so many. God bless you.
30 years old and this is my favorite song right now. This is real music
CLASSIC NAACP IMAGE AWARD SHOW REST MY BROTHER THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER LUTHER VANDROSS 🏆
Ever!
House is not a home without The one you love, 😂
Yep, when those shows had class
This performance was dangerous!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I saw Luther at the Celebrity Theater in Orange County back in the early 1990’s. I had front row seats and Luther held my hand while singing “If Only For One Night.” It is one of the most cherished moments that I will always remember❤. You shared an amazing gift with this world. Thank you ❤
I HAVE to watch this video at least once a month because I loved and still love this man and his beautiful voice. RIP Luther. You are deeply missed. ❤
Love your comment!
Amazingly gift artist...thanks be to God.
I agree with you 100%... I couldn't had said it better myself... A master class on how a true, exceptionally talented singer can hold hold an audience in the palm of his hand with just his vocal talent. Not auto tuned, no flashy dancers, no flashing lights. just him on stage with a mic!❤
When I tell you Luther's voice was one of a kind I mean it. Such amazing pitch, range , control, tone. Timeless!! The GOAT
2024 still 🔥🔥🔥
I used to listen to my daddy sing this to my mom
I signed dance with my father song in American Sign Language class in college. I’m a millennial but I know good music when I hear it 😇💖✨🔥💕✨
Beautiful memories
Get it Luther
Luther was one of a kind! He made us feel like he was singing to each of us individual! He worked the room. Watching him is pure joy!!!!! He hits straight to the soul! Standing in one spot and scanning the room from side to side with that silky, smooth voice. Oh how handsome to boot. That ending went right to the heart. I swear he was singing to me!!!!
