MADEIRA, PORTUGAL - I take a day trip to the mountains in Madeira to visit Pico do Arieiro and eat at one of the best restaurants in Madeira, Abrigo do Pastor. Don't miss this traditional Madeira Island food. If you are visiting Madeira in 2023, you have to eat at this restaurant which serves authentic Madeira food. The trip into the mountains didn't quite go to plan. Usually you have breathtaking views as you trip up and through the clouds. However, the clouds didn't break on this occasion. But I did find some other footage to show you how spectacular it really is. I stop off at Abrigo do Poiso on the way down for their traditional coffee and hard boiled egg before heading to Abrigo do Pastor for lunch. This is a MUST visit restaurant in Madeira. You cannot go wrong with the food at this restaurant, but I recommend the suckling pig.
I hope you enjoy the video and the meal.

Best food/restaurant tips i’ve seen about Madeira. In all of your vídeos, restaurants that locals chosses for their meals. Quality/price are the best. Plus your personality is adorable and you actually reserched and was on point 99,9 % of the times . Congratulations love the channel
Thank you, I had spent a lot of time in Madeira, so I feel like I know it like a local. Sadly then I didn’t really know how to film or edit videos but now I’ve learned I’ll do a much better job next time.
I flew to Thailand and found you. Now I'm flying to Madeira and found you again. Thank you👍
You should go check thejoeyp channel! Cool though, love it
Joe,
Cannot thank you enough for this video. We’re in Madeira and had lunch today at Abrigo do Pastor. The food and the service were the best. We will go back at least twice more before heading home.
Cheers
Paul
That is great to hear Paul, I am really happy you enjoyed it. It is fantastic up there in the mountains. Hope the weather was better than when I went.

Do yourself a favor and go to Muralhas Terrace in Ribeira Brava, and order the seafood rice. In all my years of having this dish at countless restaurants, this was just incredible.
Paul
I’m from just 10 minutes from that Restaurant. That’s one of my favourite local restaurants.
oh, you are lucky! I really like it there
Thank you Joe, my partner and I so enjoy watching your videos. Very informative and interesting. We get so hungry watching!
Thank you, glad to hear it. Sorry about the hunger though haha.
I'm really enjoying your Portugal videos since I'm planning a trip for next June. I cannot wait to try all the food 🥹 thanks for sharing your work!
Thank you so much :) Those were the early days of the channel, but I am glad they are useful. I need to get back and make a proper series there now that I know what I am doing with filming and editing haha.
Heading toMadeira in less than 3 months❤ will be stopping by this restaurant. Looks amazing
Oh that is awesome. I hope you enjoy your visit!
Very Very good representation of local food we are coming Very soon
thank you! you should check my other channel @thejoeyp for some more up to date videos
Thank You for posting these videos about Madeira. I miss it a Lot, My parents were born there.👍🏻🥰
No problem, I'm happy you like them. Thanks for supporting.
To do list : tmrw santo do serra and monday abrigo do pastor.... Cant wait for the food
You’re in for a treat! Have you seen my other channel @thejoeyp which has more Madeira content?
@@hungrytoexplore oh no i will check it right now. PS the market was awesome we ate a lot... And drunk a lot of poncha 😅
I miss going there. Haven't had a meal there for years because of the pandemic. can't believe you ate all of that! hehe
You'll have to get back as soon as possible now there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel. Haha nor can my doctor!!
Great video, it made me feel like I was also traveling there.
Thanks Vantida, maybe you will one day haha
I followed your videos last year before i went to madeira and had some of the best food when on holiday.
I penciled in this place last time but we are going to madeira again on the 9th November.
How do we get to this place from pestana casino hotel in madeira without hiring a car ?
Still going through your most recent videos.
Loved your video with your dad in the La Negra steak house.
We loved it there after following your recommendation. The steaks were superb maybe on par with the best we have ever had.
Love your paasion for food which comes across in your videos .
Keep up the great work 👍
ah, have you found my other channel @thejoeyp ? There is more Madeira content there, I have learned a little since these initial videos haha. I believe you can take a bus up there. all the bus info is online and easy to find, I wouldn't know which as I don't ride them. But I think look for the one towards pico do arieiro.
Up on the plateau it can be worse than a wet day in Snowdonia!
after 10 years of visiting Madeira, I've yet to secure a reservation in A do P. Poiso does a very good goat casserole btw.
Haha it can, but on a clear day, or when you get the carpet of clouds, wow!! Oh you need to change that! Go on a week day, or on Sunday arrive between 12-1pm and get your name on the list, it's bookings up until 1pm and then first come, first serve.
The food looks so yummy 😋. I can't wait to try in June. Thank you!!
So good! I will have plenty more videos between now and then from Madeira, so keep an eye out. I am living here now
absolutely gorgeous views.
haha it is better when it isn't foggy at the top!
Thanks
We've been on a jeep tour of East Madeira today and started the day at Pico do Arieiro. We were fortunate to have some amazing views. If you get a chance to do one of these tours they're pretty awesome with some great off-road sections through the forest. It's my second time on this one and I'd recommend it to anyone on the island. I went with Green Devil Safaris, but I think others do a similar route too. Sad to be leaving tomorrow, but I'll be back again soon (I hope!)
Yeah those tours can be a fantastic way to see the island. Especially if you don't have access to your own car. Shame you're leaving, but hopefully you'll be back again.
Thank you for listing the name of each meal and cost. 👍🏼
No problem, hopefully you enjoyed and it was helpful, it's a great place to eat.

Thank you so much, your Vlog is fabulous and rich with useful info for October 22 trip to Madeira. Stay awesome!
Cheers from Western Australia 👍🏼
Thanks for the video, Joe!!!
My pleasure Edison, I hope you enjoy and get to visit
Joe, that food really did look superb. What I'd call, good wholesome home style cooking. Great video once again.
It's so good there. You can't really go wrong. Can't beat home cooking style food.
@@hungrytoexplore you're right Joe especially as virtually all the food we eat is home cooked!
I loved it amazing food
Oh yeah it was so tasty!! Thank you.
Wowww I love that view, omg so amazing there 😍 I feel enjoy your food with you haha that nice 😋
It's a breathtaking view, shame it was foggy on that day. I'll have to go again when I visit again for a clear day.
Fantastic video. Loved it
oh these are the old ones! you should head over to @thejoeyp for the latest Madeira content!
Thank You Joe for great content, helps out a lot when planning for (food) trip :)
My pleasure! There’s a lot of good food there on the island. Now I’ve got the hang of video making I’ll have to come back and film more one day
each day, better videos of Madeira island! thx a lot for doing epic videos!
Thank you, great to hear that you're enjoying them
Please provide restaurant address, I don't like hiking, but I very love food. hahaha!
The locations are in the description :)
Great video - it made me so hungry! 😂 Added these to my Google map as favorites to visit - thank you so much for including the links! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Haha I guess that's a good thing. If you drop me a message on instagram I can send you my more extensive recommendation list that I normally send people when they ask.
@@hungrytoexplore Just messaged you on IG, thanks!
Awesome Food Joe ..Saudades.😎🍁🍻
Thanks John, it was very very tasty
"Madeira, Portugal". Some might object to that comment. I know it is officially but Madeirans are proud and see Madeira as its own country (which it is). It's especially true for older residents. It's like any island - Sicilians don't necessarily consider themselves Italian, Cretans (from Crete) do not necessarily see themselves as Greek. Madeirans or Madeirense are from Madeira first and foremost. Islanders tend to see the mainland as another country, whether or not that is officially by the book.
Thank you for the video. One side of my family is from Madeira and I look forward to visiting again.
Edit - just want to add after watching the video that this is one of the best Madeira food videos I have ever seen. Will definitely go to this place. Much appreciated.
Haha thank you! That was when I didn’t know how to film or edit. My style has improved a lot as you can see by my latest videos haha. I’ll be back to make more videos in Madeira that is for sure
I am moving to Portugal late next year, any tips about housing in Madeira... Thanks, I like that area very much, very nice.
Hey, that sounds really exciting. I am not in a position to give any tips on housing, I would not want to provide any information which is false or misguided. All I know, is that you need to be VERY careful about the ownership of the property and land because of the way property is handed down via families unofficially and then people pop up to claim it as theirs. So my only tip would be, get a good lawyer and do your homework. Best of luck :)
are you moving to portugal or are you moving to madeira?
did you hire a local driver? I heard it's quite challenging driving near the cliffs? will be there this summer 2022
You certainly need to be more aware and more conscious when driving there. The highways can be a little sketchy sometimes, but overall it's not so bad I would say. The roads to the mountains are usually fine too. The old coastal roads you've heard about are mainly not in use anymore now they have built new roads and tunnels. But you still see the old roads wrapping around the cliffs as you drive past, I certainly wouldn't have liked driving on them.
The black beans is a Brazilian dish! We locals don’t really eat black beans.
but it is delicious haha
I prefer suckling pig. Would never suck pig. I loves your vids. I drive ok in London but the thought of driving in Madeira scares me. Should I be scared of hiring a car?
Typo! Well... Driving can be interesting there. I'm used to it but the highways have some interesting incidents. I think it's just a case of being extra careful and aware. But I would say that a car is a must!! You uncover so much more of the beauty there.
Joe, really enjoyed your video until I saw you had bottles of Coca Cola with that beautiful food. Ugh!
ahhh! that is the issue when you have to drive!
Mountain food .......there's nothing there just rocks !
You should do stand up
