That does look pretty good
Just snap one line above dormers parallel to ridge, run up one section dropping a course 1/2 inch. This allows you to not stretch the reveals on other sections. Run first section near chalk line, and measure it. The other two sections need to hit that number. A lot less lines. Faster, and it’s good to ridge.
on the back side of this house i did that but slightly different. i was able to raise the starter on the other side of the chimney to make everything fit nicely.. but multiple shinglers made it look bad. boycub n brad haven't been shingling a great deal of time so shit gets crazy unless its just a regular straight run

I’m doing my valleys like you do with the cut shingles. Previous roofer did the “U” shingle and it leaked! Looks much neater too thanks!

I noticed when you line your felt paper up that you always line the dotted lines up together, I like that. My boss always used to just line the bottom of felt on the next row with the dotted line on the row below if that make sense. Love watching your videos bro
Have you ever installed a valley other than crap-a-fornia valley? So many reasons a open metal, or closed/cut valley is the way to go.
From the 219 myself, never had a job before and moved to Alabama somehow started roofing like 2 weeks ago, hard work is the only work lmaoo I came across your channel and love it man, only a laborer right now but I'm still loving it. keep it up brother ! Your videos are great

PAPILLON, it works out as long as the shingles are " all the same size ", sometimes they aren't. Takes too long your way. We always snapped up in feet, 3'- 5' at a time and you don't have to backfill. We've roofed apartment houses developments that sometimes had as many as 10-15 eyebrow dormers. Never once had a problem. Just keep checking your reveal every so often. Straight as an arrow.

I like to get a metal strap and bend it up plumb off the pitch and put my laser level on it to get a control line at the bottom and the top.. Then you know exactly where the the points are off, relative to plum and level.. Tones of times.. The house has settled or the framers hacked the job or the sheeting is not clean on the edges... Its wet here in SE Alaska so if something is off. a coulple inches one way or another than put a short row with a zinc strip.. Thanks for sharing..
Holy smokes lol.... this is the craziest way I've ever seen a tie in done... take one side to top off your in dormer leave other side about 8 to 10 courses down... measure high side of plywood or ridge and pop a line to carry over them your in low side... never run courses high only low if needed
lol those guys were idiots. that's pretty much how i normally do it. but we kind of didn't do the straightest job on the back so i wanted to make up for it in the front, plus multiple shinglers..it wouldn't of ended well

@@user-sk9hl7si7l I said the same about the measuring but we did it again today and only snapped our first at 11 1/4 then marked 45 90 and 135 until we got past the valleys n skylights. Worked out really nicely and ran the rest as normal. It actually looked really good and was fast as well

I'm used to starting 12 1/2", then 22 1/2" from there on. Works out real well & a lot less lines to deal with
Absolutley nice job bro, six to have to do it like that but somtimes is the best as you can see, I dont roof shingles anymore but when I did my brother and I shingled so much alike we could start on opposite sides and come out perfect out of the valleys. I've found that if you and 1 other person shingle the same it's perfect for this. Keep it up. Love to see quality
thanks. and that is absolutely true. myself and another guy who i basically shingled with when i was learning did it exactly the same and kept and entire warehouse straight just from snapping a starter line. i'm talking 4 bundle runs
If you chalk a line 3” down from ridge and angle the tape so you squish the courses within that space (ending up with a measurement at that top line being a multiple of your desired exposure) you end up with a full top course where the ridge caps come down far enough to cover the nails and less crap to cut off at the top of the roof. Takes a few minutes to get lines on the roof but I feel like you make up for the time in install by knowing you have good marks to work off of.
When you were cutting the shingles in the valley instead of going straight down sometimes I just cut off the bottom triangle along the line of the bleeder shingle it gives it more coverage that way

We do 11" if using 3 tab starter. Then mark a 12 1/4" but dont pop the 12 1/4". Its just to mark off of. Then for GAF dimensional (from the 12 1/4" mark) mark 22 1/4" marks up the entire rake. It would be 22 1/4", 44 1/2", 66 3/4", 89", ect.... that will give you some play incase the roof bows downward and when you get to deepest part of bow you won't be above the exposure line.
Measure down from center of ridge to top mark on rake. Go to rake on other side. Measure down from ridge make mark sane as other side.
Mark 2 or three down. Then go to eve and mark up to last mark you made at top. Check for accuracy. Adjust 1/4" or less per row to make right by the time you get to top row.
So your cheating the center rows up to a 1/4" per line. Pop top lines above dormers and below dormers. Mark lines from existing lines under dormers and make sure they meet top line above dormers adjusting 1/4 " per line.
After all said and done top and bottom sections are perfect and no cheater runs more than 1/4" and in the middle where less notices.
3tab shingles are 11 then off of 11 its 20, 40, 60, 80, ect...
Rake lines are 11", 29", 35"....
That's how I was thought we were doing 3 tabs back then snap a line every 3rd or 4th course
Zach how are you bud my name is Javier I live in tampa FL with gaf tanko and cople other shingles I do the first line 18 and from there you could do 22 1/2 but it's better to do 45 on your lines for your chalk use #4 it's more visible and also when you're doing dormers bring the lines 45 down as the space come closer use 22 1/2 i use lines on my shingles whether is GAF tanko pinnacle atlas iko stay blessed hope the information is useful
So you would make the shingles streight to the eve all the way up roof until top of dormers then adjust the one side either down or up to make the ridge reveal streight?
Can you do a “tip and technique” video? One thing I’d like to see is where you put your gun when aligning your shingle prior to shooting it down. I have a good idea and have tried that technique but an up close look would be appreciated! Eyeball alignment is very effective but way to slow!

Im used to 18 and 45 and works fine that first line lands on the second shingle
woulnt mesuring up from the eve on both sides plus the middle throw off the streight line? wouldnt it be more streight to just mesure up from both sides of roof and snap that line leaving out the middle mark?
ZACH, what you gonna do if these new metal roofs that look like shingles start taking over many of the bigger jobs? I myself like metal but I'm not thrilled about the cost. Shingles just don't last long enough is the only downside to me on them. Give me your thoughts here or in a video sure would appreciate it. Whip
Have laminated cards with the correct numbers.
I just go 18 off the drip then 22 1/4 all the way up then measure down on the opposite side...always seems to work out for me

The way I mark Is first one is 17 1/2 or 18 depends on how long the roof is and just go 28s all the way up or 45s, nice and straight every time.
I mark different when there’s dormers and Valleys

Since you always use the same shingles, you could just dedicate a tape for houses with dormers, and mark off the increments on the tape.
thats a damn good idea! i don't do it that much though but will keep that in mind if i have an extra junk tape

I always do mine every 4 shingles 22-1/2.
A friend says Owens corning is different in east coast vs. west coast. Not the granny color. The actual lap of the shingle. I here it’s like 2” on East. And and see commonly most manuf. building shingles with a 3/4” on west. I hear for wind uplift. Any insight to this?
Another good way of doing it is snapping your first line at 41 inches then every 56 inches you will drop a little bit but it works great
Sounds like a good move. I was planning on doing 45 90 135 etc. From now on.
I try to discourage my guys from cutting like that tho.. I encourage shingle snips. We’ve had accidents with cutting the underneath one in the hot months.
Lol I hate when the peak is cocked and everything is out of square! Makes it hard to get straight lines.. if they are, we go by the peak because that’s where the client will see it against the ridge vent. Other than that, spot on with what we do.
They sell a roofers tape measure with all the marks on it.
Over all nice video but cut valley are way better protection if you have snow and a lot of water. But if you don't nail in the middle den your kind of safe
I just put nails in the plywood joints every 4 or 8 ft then snap lines. No need to measure. Obviously measure on a boarded roof but with OSB just use the butt joints of the plywood and you will have straight lines every time.
Great vids man. Quick question, you measure the shingle to be 13.25, but then you chalk lines for 11.25. Just wondering why you chose 11.25? Im inclined to measure 13.25 every time
because the face reveal of the shingles needs to be accounted for in the math, see part 2 of my most recent roofing series which is very popular. the reveal is 5 5/8
You need to learn how to pop lines up 1 side to top of dormers pop line all way across and mark it down every 11

Pull up to pull down. Wrapping the peak will cause your bottom shingles to eat up any difference rather than have it in the middle or top.

@@NWIVeteranConstruction start by pulling up from one side of the area, pull all the way up to the peak. Wrap the peak to find the mark. Make your mark and pull down.

Back in the old three tab days we would hook the starter/drip edge and mark 7. 17. 27. 37 and so on. Or am I trippn?

What I do, so I don’t have to snap so many lines. I just do 45, 90, 135, and so on to get passed the dormers. If it’s to much over them I will just take off 11 1/4. To make the marriage line closer to the peak of the dormer! Same idea just a few less lines to snap.
I alway If I can’t keep something from going wrong in 45” I have other problems 😂

I get that with other guys working the same pitch.
Easier to make a story stick with the marks on it and use that to make your marks on the roof. Eliminates math errors.

I wouldn’t install GAF on my dog house lol. The hell with that exposure. Atlas pinnacles have a 6” exposure. Way easier math(except my guys don’t snap but one line.🤦🏻♂️) they have there way and I don’t argue 😂

Thats a lot of lines!!!!! We snap 18 and 1/2 and 50 and 1/2 from there...as long as no one blows by a line they always turn out great. We snap 50 and 1/2 down from the ridge if the dormer meets the eave.

You could never talk me into that underlayment unless it becomes code then it would get covered with felt and all valleys would be basket woven !;-)
are you still using tar paper? this GAF felt buster goes on quicker, barely cost more per sq ft. is safer because the nails won't slide through it on hot days, as well as its grippy.

I’m not even joking. Half the homes on my street have like a 1 inch reveal on one side where 2 valleys meet. It’s like they can’t even make a reasonable estimate in their heads. They just mindlessly nail down shingles and see what happens.
Sad thing is they probly can, but they are the crews that get in get it done and sacrifice quality. I see it everyday 😔

Been shingling homes since 1985. Doesn’t anyone weave valleys any more?? I make 25% of my income being called to new homes, tearing out the leaking cut valleys and replacing with a woven valley. On a cut valley, the rain / snow water comes down the opposite slope, under the cut and into the building.
Mines a closed valley. We have a shingle down that makes the straight line. You can see in one of my prior videos
What you are doing is a cut valley or some call it a California cut. I’m talking about a full weave. A row come in from the left , then from the right, repeat. I have been roofing for 20 years before I ever saw my first cut, non woven valley. Been fixing them ever since. They might work the first couple of year, but dirt / mud gets caught under the cut and the water is pushed diagonally under the shingles. I have done water test and observed water cumming out

I believe technically cut valleys are supposed to be cemented down along the cut edge, but practically no one does it.
Seriously! All I do is weave my valleys IDC if it's a 4 into a 12... Much more safe and secure valley! All the snow builds up and sits in the valley. If you don't do it it's cause ya probably don't know how.

We normally do 22.5, 45 and then do 45 the rest of the way. Nice straight start and then some reminder lines every few rows. 22.5 takes too long for most sections of roof!
Most roofers like myself have halfof grade 12 (6) too much ever heard snap across backdown its not the mona lisa next roof!

I can't believe your going through that? On your last side you come up and match up just sop 5 courses away and check it if off then you can drop those last 5 courses, or stop as many as you want away. So much quicker and less bullshit work
