    I think that non-guitarists don't grasp that Eddie was not just an innovator, but that he had that rare combination of understanding the technical aspects of guitars and amps along with an uncanny ability to pick up every kind of playing style, and blend them into what he did. Add into that a musicality that emphasized melody over wailing, and playing between things between the notes that felt perfect.

    When I was growing up all the guitarists I admired had been inspired by Eric Clapton and/or Jimi Hendrix, which I didn't fully understand. So I'm sure when I talk about the immeasurable impact EVH had on me the younger guys don't understand either. But it's absolutely true. I'll never recover from hearing the first Van Halen album. It rewired me for all time. EVH isn't the fastest, most technical, and I'm certain if you cut your teeth on 100 post-Eddie players before hearing Eddie, his playing likely won't have that much impact. But take it from a pro of 40+ years who has toured the country with very good bands and recorded hundreds of tracks as a contract studio player (none of which makes me GOOD, just experienced): Eddie Van Halen was like a god, descended to earth to take rock guitar into the stratosphere. There were many, many good players before him, but Eddie's playing was like seeing an alien. "Where in god's name did *THAT* come from? What *is* it???" Once you heard EVH's playing, you could not Un-hear it, and if you were a guitarist worth your salt the influence would somehow internalize and then leak out through your own playing in some way. The result might be imperceptible, but it was there. Eddie Van Halen changed EVERYTHING.

      @JayRoc17 4 года назад +7

      Couldn't agree more. Just want to point out(because a lot of post-Eddie shredders don't see it or can't appreciate it) that Eddie was definitely technically gifted and he did it all with a lot of feel!! Many of us also know he even started out as an exceptional young classically trained pianist winning a number of competitions. In addition I still haven't heard anyone play Eruption the way he did, as well as Spanish Fly, which was a very technically demanding piece in itself and on acoustic to boot!! He could have easily continued down that road of technical virtuosity but he has always been about making great music with a great band instead.

    • @JayRoc17
      @JayRoc17 4 года назад +6

      In addition, I can't stand a lot of this prog metal meaningless non-musical shredding and these kids who practice this shit 8 hours a day, are doing shit in school and listen to nothing genuinely musical and tasteful (talking from personal experience with kids of friends.) For them it's like an Olympics to see how many notes one can fit into one measure and who can learn the most intricate solos which sound more like a video game sequence than musical. And yes this is coming from someone who can shred via alternate picking, legato, sweeps, arpeggios , string skipping etc., but the key is there is a time and a place for it and it should be done tastefully so that it's musically appealing.

    The beauty of having someone like Ed setting the bar so high is that someone out there will eventually raise it even further. There is no "Greatest of All Time" because someone is always waiting in the wings and practicing 24 hours a day to become better than their idols. Ed will always be one of the most well-loved, well-admired, and well-respected guitar gods of all time. But he was leading the pack and now it's someone else's turn to lead the pack. We can mourn his passing but we can also thank him for the challenge he has set for others to top him. And when we start hearing those guys (and gals) it will be GLORIOUS!

    • @har9020
      @har9020 3 года назад

      @Vito B I can sort of see your point. And to a certain extent you are correct in that the music business itself is structured to make it highly unlikely for the "new" Eddie (or Beatles or Zep or Hendrix) to ever get widespread attention. But there will always be a bevy of "unknown greats" out there. Somewhere out there is a guitarist who can run circles around EVH and Hendrix, great as they are. Having someone surpass them doesn't diminish them in any way, just like Hank Aaron beating Babe Ruth's home run record didn't diminish Babe's accomplishments or undercut his legend status. If anything, guitarists like EVH and Hendrix inspire other musicians to work ten times as hard as they might have done otherwise.
      Everyone thought Enrico Rastelli was the best juggler who ever lived... until Anthony Gatto came along and was doing at age 7 what Rastelli couldn't do at that age. Then Thomas Deitz came along and buried them both. And now David Ferman is giving Dietz a run for his money. There is no "All-Time Greatest" anything. Great artists inspire even greater artists.
      But to your point about how the word is changing.... Yes it is. And music education in schools is all but extinct, making it worse. Lord only knows how many truly great potential musicians will never even pick up an instrument in their entire lives. Like the old saying goes, "What a shame it would be for the human race if the cure for cancer is forever hidden inside the mind of a person who can't afford an education?"

    He should've done more videos like this. People would've gone nuts. But i understand his health has been a struggle for 10 years. I've always said if Ed had done a step by step video how he set-up his equipment in the van halen club and VH1 days, it would be one of the most watched guitar related videos on you tube. Imagine ed getting out his old marshal 1959, phase 90, echo plex, and etc... And walking us through how he did it. Would've been amazing to see. I'm really surprised Wolfie or anyone else did not suggest him doing YT videos. I guess he just wanted to do music in his studio. He was a weird dude but a genius none the less. RIP "little dreamer."

    I owned the first line of 5150’s & it was the perfect amp for me. I gigged with it, rehearsals, stacking equipment in a van & traveled.....Not a collectors item in my home. It was a beast. Straight in!! No pedal or processed distortion & it still was a power-horse. Anyone who heard it would ask ‘what r u running??’ They couldnt believe it was all amp. Even the cab was nothing special. 20 year old speakers......A telecaster. Im telling u that thing was a hard rock, 90’s guitar noise monster. I loved it. My only complaint was that it was heavy as hell-lol
    Which was probably a perk because the wind coming out of that cab from the sheer power may have vibrated the head right off otherwise lol lol JK!
    I have no doubt 2 & 3 have only improved beyond.....But im an old guy at home now with no use for gear at this level. Like a wild beast, it would not b right to keep it in the closet/cage. I sold it to a young person who gigs, at a reasonable price no doubt....remembering when my youthful income never matched my need for gear. Thank u EVH!!! The inspiration, music, & amp design .....🤘🏻

      You make a great point. Which I think was part of the motivation behind the products in the EVH brand. Everything is reasonably priced. Anything with Eddie’s name on it could justifiably be outrageously priced but nothing is. And they made sure to use the exact same parts on guitars no matter what country the guitar was made in, to try keeping the quality high no matter what the price range. Not many other brands will do that.
