Learning how to play the guitar in the age of the internet isn’t easy. You’re faced with an endless barrage of information with no way to know what you should be spending your time on. In this video, I want to show you the easiest way to navigate the fretboard. If you’re a complete beginner, this is a particularly great way to start getting a grasp of the notes on the guitar. We’ll cover the natural musical alphabet, sharps & flats, the guitar string names, and make use of something called “octave centers” to locate every single note without worrying about total guitar fretboard memorization.
There’s a lot to digest here, so don’t be afraid to pause the video and take some extra time if you need it. Music theory for guitar doesn't have to be scary! If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments below.

im new to playing and just discovered this video. Crazy it only has 170 views. I went into the comments hoping to see many people giving thanks to you for making this video. Your way of explaining is easy to understand and helped me a lot. For 210 subs your video is very well made and very professional. Wish you the best the channel deserves more attention!! Thanks
I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed the video! Yup, I'm just starting out. I appreciate the kind words. Let me know if you ever have any questions. I'd be happy to help :)
Yeah dude.. You're on your path, stay focused.. Of all the instructional videos, your content has been the most digestable instantly, across the board. You're a teacher through and through and with the proper focus I think you could be one of the top instructors on the platform. Thanks for the lesson man
I appreciate that so much. Thank you!
Honestly, you're a genius teacher.
Thank you so much!
Not really ,
Not to shit on him, he did a good job but i have a problem when people use the word GENIUS when it's not deserved
this isn't genius , this is basic guitar theory and the important basics,
you don't go up to your math teacher after she teaches you 2+2 and you say
wow, you are honestly a genius teacher
No... you don't do that
he is well spoken, sure but not a genius (at least i can't judge it by this content)
@Play Guitar The Right Way
No i don't think it's a fake comment and i understand that i've been playing a long time, some, 35 odd years,
i think the comment is genuine and comes from a good place, a place of appreciation
but IT'S AN INACCURATE COMMENT
Look, i'm an Engineer by trade, ok I.T. Electrical and Electronics
Now, the term engineer gets thrown around a lot and after a while it doesn't mean much and it's rather insulting to real engineers
Now.. i myself do not see myself as a genius, although i get called a genius quite a lot
and now , let's ask why that happens
i may go to a clients house and just re terminate a connection (a Very simple thing in my line of work) and the person see's me as a genius
on the guitar, i might do some sort of solo Around Am Pentatonic (which we all know is stock and relatively simple)
but to those that don't know they see this as GENIUS
it's not Genius,
i'm not shitting on their comment, i know it's genuine and they mean well
i'm not shitting on the creator of the video
i'm just correcting the comment so they understand he is not on a genius level for doing this.... this is basic stuff and i don't think he takes it offensively because he would also know it's basic stuff
that's all it is
This isn't a fake comment, and I didn't say he was a genius, he's a genius teacher, I struggle to learn some things and he made it very easy to understand and to learn is that not a great teacher?
@@mbudman5285
ok, firstly , i didn't say it was a fake comment THAT WAS THE OTHER GUY
you did say he was a genius , Look
"Honestly, you're a genius teacher."
see........... RIGHT HERE LOL
Genius and Genius teacher is the same thing, it's still a form of genius
as for this
" I struggle to learn some things and he made it very easy to understand and to learn is that not a great teacher?"
MATE... allow me to use profanity so that you understand me PERFECTLY
i absolutely fucking understanding you , ok
When i was younger i also struggled to learn shit, SO .. I GET IT
He is a good teacher YES
Genius teacher.... NO
TO YOU, However.... he is
and i understand that as well
although again, just be clear I didn't say your comment was fake, that was the other guy.
i was the one that said it WASN'T fake
so just understand this....
when you actually meet a GENIUS TEACHER it won't be like this guy,
but for now.... sure, Learn from him , he's a good teacher
ive had the notes down for quite a while on a per string basis, but NEVER has anyone talked or mentioned Octave centers. you just made my life so much easier in regards to understanding the relationship between strings, octaves, and moving around shapes on the fretboard. Thanks!
Awesome! Glad you found it helpful :)
Dude. This tutorial rocks. I’ve heard this stuff before but your instructional style lends to a level of understanding that few other videos reach. I’ve consolidated more from three of your videos than all I’ve watched in 2 years. Thanks 🙏🏾
I love hearing that. Thanks for checking out my videos!
I've been trying to teach myself guitar for years. I played brass in school, and I could never find anyone that would teach guitar in reference to basic music theory (only all-in, or no theory at all).
These videos are *EXACTLY* what I've been looking for!
THANK YOU!
Glad you like 'em. Cheers!
I've been learning on and off for a couple of years and this is the first time I've seen this idea. It's genius in it's simplicity and you explained it perfectly clearly. This is massively helpful, thanks.
Glad it was helpful! Cheers!
I can actually follow along and learn with every single one of your videos, thank you so much.
Happy to hear that! You're very welcome.
Hello Mr Andrew Clark, am your student from zambia I can now play and understand the chords nice. God bless you and thanks very much for the beautiful lessons
Hands down the best guitar channel out there. No intro and no bs, just straight to the point with the best approach I've seen so far. I love your approach and how you're breaking down things very methodical. Everything makes sense! Thank you
I really appreciate that! ☺
I never understood note placement on the guitar and you just explained it well!
I'm glad it worked for you!
Andrew, you are very good, inspiring and short and clear explaining. Thank God you are here!
I appreciate that!
After 48 years of playing around with the guitar, you are the first instructor to explain the notes on the neck in an easy to understand why. I think in a few days I should have them all memorized.
Amazing! Good job :)
You are going to be the Legend of beginner guitar players with how you explain it in a simple and understandable manner.
Thank you for coming to the youtube.
I think you will have your channel bloom soon.❤😊
Thank you!
it feels right to understand thing better than just learning. Thank you.
Just found this channel and wanted to say thank you for the clear and concise videos! Super useful delivery of information without any bloat. Very much appreciate your efforts!
Thank you so much!
Excellent! Long time musician and have never understood music theory. This was great.
I recently ran across your guitar tutorials and have been saving almost every one to have as a reference. I think you are a great teacher and set each video up with clear and attainable objectives. Thanks for your work!
Wow, thank you so much!
Very good. I new the notes on the E and A strings so this is brilliant. Thanks again
Thank you so much for your videos! I’m a guitar beginner from germany and I’ve just recently discovered your channel - I really really appreciate your videos! Helps a lot and it’s much easier to understand that way! Great work💯

Another great video. Well explained in a straight forward way. Thank you.👍
Thanks! :D
OMG That is amazing. You figured out and made us figure out!
Just started guitar and your beginner theory video and this have literally made it click in my mind. Incredible incredible videos, keep it up man!
That's awesome! Glad I can help :)
Thank you so much, the way you explain stuff is really good and straight to the point.
I appreciate that :)
Just here to help the algorithm. I've been consuming beginner guitar content for a bit and really this channel has been the most digestible. For me, I'd much rather take 12-15 mins to discuss simple, but foundational concepts in-depth rather than the 5 mins that other teachers seem to breeze through.
Awesome lesson Andrew. thanks.
Thanks for the amazing video!
You are massively underrated my man keep up the good work!
I really appreciate that. Thank you!
Brilliant explanations- thank you 😊
Lovely, I'd learned guitar 5 years ago but had to quit due to studies but now going back to my guitar journey from this video. (12/1/23 9:16pm)
Another video hitting the nail on the head ! Well done mate ! Love the content
Thanks! Glad you're liking it.
Andrew, I know this is an old video, but I just discovered your playlist and I feel like my brain exploded! All of this makes so much sense in a way it never did before. Thank you SO much
Hey that's awesome! It's my pleasure ☺
I have been trying to learn this for many years but this is the best tutorial I have seen that I could understand in layman terms - thank you
You're very welcome!
This is the musical knowledge I was looking for.
thank you for this great video.
My pleasure!
I can't believe how much sense your videos are making!
I have been playing on and off for about 10 years. I have gotten frustrated. Stopped playing saying "maybe it is just not for me." Listen to some songs, get inspired, pick up and play for a week or 2, then just give up because I just couldn't seem to get it, and life just doesn't really give me enough breaks to play and practice.
Your videos dropped into my feed sometime yesterday and you use John Mayer for teaching. THIS is extremely motivating to me. Mayer he is one of my aspirations with my guitar journey. If I can ever play at least one of his songs from start to finish in one sitting, I will feel like I have accomplished something. Thank you, good sir. Please keep teaching us the way you do!
This was an extremely helpful video! Thank you for posting this info and making these concepts so easy to understand!
Glad I could help :)
love it man. I am learning new techniques from your videos

Literally a day after I watched this video my friend (who dosen't play guitar) taught me the notes for hot cross buns (easy I know, but that's why he wanted me to play it) and I was able to play it, which I couldn't do before. Thanks for the great lesson man!
Man thank you so much you are an awesome teacher you earned a subscriber
Wow. I'll have to take some time to understand it better, but I get the idea. Thank you
This was just perfect! You're a great teacher!
Thank you! 😃
Very clear, thanks a lot!!!
Glad you liked it!
Real good lesson(s) I'll use your method as well and something you said at the end of your lesson was very important to, you said you probably will want to memorize the notes on every string etc and yeah l too do that as well-GREAT LESSON!!!!
Nice! Everyone is different so it’s all about finding what works best for you!
| usually don't write comments BUT I have to say that this is the best video about this topic l ever found in the jungle of guitar theorie videos. As a beginner it helped me a lot and I finally got it. Very well and easy explained, thank you! Keep up the great work!

Awesome way of learning the notes! Thank you
My pleasure!
Perfect, thank youuuu
Very well explained - thank you!!
You're very welcome!
I've always felt overwhelmed by guitar theory so I have spent years just ignoring it. This has obviously been to my detriment so I thought I'd take a crack at it again. I am so glad I found your video. Subscribed and plan on rewatching this until its second nature. Instead of being overwhelmed now I'm just regular whelmed.
Wow! This is great information.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you very much Andrew, I'm currently slowly learning music theory, your videos are very helpful 😂😊
Great video. I have just discovered your series, and you already have quite a few videos. Can you suggest a sequence in which to work through them?

Brilliant Stuff! New Sub!
Awesome, thank you!
You’re the best guitar teacher I’ve ever had. You make it so easy to understand thank you 🙏🏼👏🏼
Thank you, Jonathan!
Everybody knows that the alphabet starts with the letter A and so does the musical alphabet, but every music teacher starts the musical alphabet with the letter C because that is the start of the Major scale and we don't have to confuse beginners with sharps and flats but you would be surprised at how nobody explains it like that, and so beginners ar left wondering why you would start an alphabet with the letter C and not A. I am glad that you explained it. What prompted my thought is I tryed to apply your 221-2221 phone number to your abcdefg and found it didn't work unless you stared with the letter C first...cdefgab. Thank you so much it really was an ah ha moment for me.
Glad you found the video helpful!
Cool may the algorithm be with you. You deserve it.
I appreciate that! 🙏
Just want to say thank you for this. I am a new player but I have a mathematical brain and this makes the fret board make 100x more sense.
That's great! I'm glad I could help. :)
thank you bro ,genius is you
excellent!
Dude! You're brilliant! So CMIIW.. Know notes on 1st and 2nd string, and do a power chord octave shape to find it in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th (with a little tweak on the shape) and the 6th E string is the same with the 1st E string right?
Nailed it! It's that simple. :)
As soon as you started the Octave Centers chapter I could hear how the Beatles wrote I Feel Fine.
Nice Fender !!
Best guitar teacher of youtube...
🙏🙏
Interesting Thanks
San Francisco California USA
Thanks for watching!
thank you for HAVING THE DIAGRAM FACE THE SAME WAY AS YOUR GUITAR 😭
Really coooool
best teacher!
Thank you! 😃
Incredible video. Two minutes of instruction on the blindingly obvious, squeezed into a 12 minute video.
This guy is such a king
Thank you, my friend 🙏
¡Gracias!
Thank you!
Thx a ton for your tutorial. I'm a beginner, so often times get stuck with theory. My question is: When I tried to apply the same C# concept on the C# on the 4th fret (where it is), I could not find the C#, when applying the (half-step) thing on the bottom string, where if it workd, the C# would happen to be in the B string, just like in the higher strings. I hope my question isn't confusing. If it is, pls lemme know & I'll try to explain again. I would really appreciate your help on this one. Thanks
Hey Andrew, how do you know what chords are in a particular scale. Like the C major how would you know?
Hey! I explain it all in detail in this video here: ruclips.net/video/dHKwodTRKN0/видео.html
Teşekkürler.
