When it comes to navigating the guitar fretboard, the CAGED system is about as effective as it gets. This is because it covers literally every guitar chord and every guitar scale across the entire neck. In this video, I'll show you how you can use the CAGED system to play new chords, create your own guitar solos, and fully visualize the fretboard in a new way.
Here are some of the questions that this video will answer:
"What is the CAGED system?"
"Why does CAGED use these chords?"
"How do minor chords work with the CAGED system?"
"How does the pentatonic scale work with CAGED?"
"How do I solo using the CAGED system?"
"How do you use CAGED in other keys?"
"How do you practice using the CAGED system?"
If you have any other questions, please leave them in the comments below. Thanks for watching!

Hi, can you just go over your point about pentatonics fitting over caged chord shapes again please. Is there a pentatonic thst goes with the G Shape in CAGED but would hnot fit that well over the C shape using say, the E shape in the key of E?
The way you connect the dots to a lot of different-yet-related ideas without overwhelming the viewer is second to none on RUclips. I get a lot of lightbulb moments watching your videos.
I really appreciate that. Really glad the videos are working for you. Cheers!
This may be the most well-organized, clearly communicated channel on these concepts I've come across. I've been hoping to find a single cohesive space to direct people who are wanting to learn more theory and application on RUclips, and I think I've just found it. You've seemingly thought of everything, including how to direct people to other videos based on question or concept. Stellar work man
I really appreciate the kind words. Thank you!
I knew if you made a video on CAGED I'd get more useful information than I would from many other RUclips-videos, because you connect it to practice and to other theoretical concepts so that things just start clicking. :) I've been practicing the 5 pentatonic shapes and now I get to connect that whole thing with the CAGED shapes. Thank you, you do an awesome job and help out so much!
I'm so happy to hear that! If you run into any questions, please let me know. Thanks for watching!
Plus ,his goddam frtbd is BACKWARDS
Omg, someone finally explaining CAGED in a way I understand! You're a blessing, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Well done, young man. Working on getting caged, and triads under my fingers. Your explanation was clear, and concise. Really helped me out. Good health.
Glad I could help :)
Excellent explanation of the caged system. Your approach is unique.
Very glad you liked it!
Wow! You explain everything in details! It’s so rare to find a lesson like this. Thank you again :)
I’m so glad you’ve found it helpful! Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
Such a high quality and really useful lesson. Thanks a lot dude.
Glad you liked it! My pleasure :)
The red dot animation is golden very clear explanation
Awesome! Glad it worked for you :)
@@andrewclarkeguitar Agreed, you explain things 100x better than other vids!
Very well explained. Thanks again.
This is the best teaching of chord shapes and pentatonic patterns /Diatonic scales that I've ever seen on the net. Well done. I'm definitely a fan. Well done, thank you
My pleasure! I'm glad it worked for you. Thanks for watching :)
Once again, such high quality content. Appreciate you, man!
Thank you so much!
Most systematic lessons I've found so far! Perfect for self learning, thank you!
Thank you - finally managed to wrap my head around CAGED now. Excellent tutorial👏
Awesome! Glad I could help :)
Most of these paid lesson websites are claiming that RUclips is not a great place to learn guitar, and this man is out here blowing people’s minds with this content.
Here’s EDCAG-7: you start on E, just like the guitar, and you use these 5 Dominant 7 shapes on the top 4 strings (DGBE). So E7, 2130; D7-shape, 2434; C7-shape, 6757; A7-shape, 9797; G7-shape, 999-10; and E7 again at the octave, 14-13-15-12.
To those 5 shapes, associate increasingly more notes: 1-3-5-b7, 1-b3/3-5-b7, 1-b3/3-4-5-b7, then add b5-6-2 (one by one, in that order). Now you’ve associated Mixolydian combined with the Blues scale to those 5 shapes (1-2-b3/3-4-b5-5-6-b7). Even the last 3 of the 12 notes can be used in chromatic lines (b2-b6-7). - Please try this!
Your teaching style delivers concise and instantly usable playing tools for every level of beginner/hobbyist to - advanced guitarist in my opinion. Any finger exercises to strengthen my fingers would be super helpful or what do you do to workout your fingers before bar chording.
The knowledge, preparation, and ability to articulate concepts in your videos is top shelf. Thank you for being willing to put yourself out there and create valuable content!
I appreciate that. Thank you!
Haven't had a chance to watch it yet but judging from the comments, it sounds like it's going to be excellent!!! I will let you know and thank you once again!!!
Every time i watch this video, there is more knowledge I've missed. Thanks again for the content
Glad you found it helpful!!
Andrew I have watched lessons from much "bigger" channels and you absolutely wipe the floor with them! You should be getting way more views, I can't believe I'm getting such clear information for free.
That's so kind of you to say. Thank you so much ☺🙏
Thanks man , really well explained and great how you connected all those concepts instead of getting it piecemeal.
Glad it worked for you :) Thanks for watching!
Awesome lesson!🔥🙏
Thanks! 😃
Thanks for explaining the chord forms in the pentatonic positions. That is important to learn and connecting them. I subscribed.
Thank you!
Gonna learn CAGED! Sweet. Thank you
Awesome! Let me know if you have any questions! Good luck. 😀
Bro you, are the man
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for checking out the video 🙏
Excellent and informative. Ty
Glad it was helpful!
Fun! I didn't know the pentatonic, i just knew the major because i play by ear. I've been finding new chord shapes up the neck, thinking I'm finding them - and here you are showing me chords and shapes i thought were ones i found! Duh...i didn't find anything new! But they were new to me, and my ear loves their sounds depending on the song. Now i see a pattern of connectedness i didn't see before - i only heard it. I don't want this approach to take the fun of of the mystery, but it helps me improve. I guess a good ear, and knowledge, are a better mix than just one or the other...
You are such an excellent teacher Andrew! Hands down one of the best. You explain the things we all would ask about but don’t know enough to ask. Thanks for the clarity. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much ☺🙏
Brilliant lesson ... much appreciated!!
My pleasure!
awesome lesson thank you!
You're welcome :)
Wow, halfway thru and ive learned more than i have in years, excellent explanations ty
Glad it was helpful!
You are an amazing teacher. Seriously. Subscribed.

Thanks mate, that was a great video!...I'll check your triads one out now....Thanks!
Thanks for watching 😁
Thanks for your time and skills kind sir
My pleasure!!
Good stuff. Kudos 😊
Thank you! Cheers!
This is better than any paid courses out there!
I really appreciate that :)
Best explanation ive come across on you tube
Glad you liked it :)
Very very nice
This is a great video lesson. This kid really knows his stuff. This was the first video I’ve seen of his but I think he’s a good teacher . I have been playing a long time and I am subscribing. I have no problem learning from someone who is young enough to be my kid. As long as he doesn’t start getting all cocky 😂
Haha, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I'm in my 30's, so I'm not that young anymore 😅
@@andrewclarkeguitar lol You’ll have to forgive me I was 30, thirty years ago. I do appreciate people sharing their knowledge freely online. Knowledge only available to those who could afford to pay when I was young. A real game changer and a beautiful thing.
undoubtedly youre the best ....on youtube
I really appreciate that 🙏🏻
Thanks!
Thank you so much!
You are one heck of a teacher
Thank you so much ☺
Very good
Thanks!
Brilliant
😁🙏🏻
Hats off to Dagan! A versatile player indeed..
I find the guitar marmite.. it’s like a tidy chick that’s been with your mate!
I feel like other teachers memorized music, you understand music
🙏🙏
Your lessons are awesome. Too bad that the high e is on the bottom of your fretboard diagrams, instead of the low E: like it is displayed in (almost) all courses and tabs. That would be way clearer for me. Or would it be possible to show both?
Personally I prefer the way Andrew does it. The diagram matches the video. The more conventional diagram works better when there is no video as it is looking from the player's perspective.
Please make a video on Strumming and Rhythm
I’ll be sure to do more on that! I do have a video on 8 tips for tighter rhythm that you can check out :)
Thank you my good man
Thanks for watching!
This is a great video. My issue is I can see the notes insides the CAGED shape than my finders are on. It’s the extra notes that are not under my fingers that throw me. Is that just a memorization exercise. The caged shapes are on three notes of the chord, but there are 4 other notes that seem to throw me. Any suggestion?
Every class of yours is as good as the previous one, you do such a good job but I would like to add an observation if you just slowdown a bit the class would be more effective. I understand there is lot of material to put in one video and yet you would like more to say about it...remember you are talking to learners. Anyway, I still think you are a great teacher and you are helping so many of us that follow you.
Thanks for the feedback!
So should you try to memorize the notes within the chords?
So I've been messing around with this for a while.
Correct me if I'm wrong please. This would mean that if I want to solo to a song all I would have to do is find the key on the low e string. Then from that note start with the first pentatonic scale shape and mess around with the other positions in the solo
That's correct! I have a bunch more videos to expand on that idea as well.
Hi Andrew, Do you have a video where you explain with examples for the 27min onward in this video?
Not yet! I touch on connecting scales in some other videos, but not specifically with how they link using the CAGED system.
The root notes indicated on the fretboard diagram would have been very helpful. Great lesson though. Thank you.
I am just getting started with the caged system.
Why are 5 chord forms necessary?
Each chord can be played by one formation..I'm not understanding the need for the other 4.
Does it have to do with ease of access to specific scale and arpeggio shapes?
Yeahhh
wait so im confused so with the pentatonic shapes is it just the same as the A pentatonic shape that can only be played or do we have to start at the pentatonic of the actual scale so lets say the D pentatonic is on the 10 th fret do we start there??im lost
A lot of shapes in pentatonic scales are the same they are just played in different positions of the fret board. For example look at em pentatonic scale and Am pentatonic. U have the same shape on the scales one is on the 5th position, (am pent) and the other is on the 12 fret -em pentatonic. They are the same for all scales - well mostly. The A major has the same shape as the Am and Em pentatonic but it starts on the second fret. Basically once you learn one shape it transfers over to other scales, and the same goes for other shapes.
I never have understood why the penatonic positions don't start at the nut end of the neck
28:32 special guest: your cat!
Hahah. That's actually my dog Luca 😀
@@andrewclarkeguitar oh snap! Even better, I like dogs more. 🤣
oh! who's this on 28:32?
That's my dog, Luca! 😁
17:45 Why is position 1 of the pentatonic sitting over an E Shape and not C Shape? My brains hurts :(
It's just the way it works unfortunately. I realize it's a lot to take in. Position 3 of the Major Pentatonic scale sits over the standard open C major chord in the key of C major.
@@andrewclarkeguitar Gotcha. Thanks for clarifying Andrew
i'd delitenly known about guilter whatsoever i can added something in my scatterbrain
The numbering of the pentatonic boxes here isn't standard. The canonical minor shape box (G shape) is usually denoted box no. 1.
Looks like bossa nova chords
I’m more confused now than ever sadly….
Surely One of my favourite channels but,in this case,i would have preferred more practical examples. Too much talk this time
Every chord is an open chord really…you’re just shifting the nut with your finger.
Yes!
there is a lot of verbal explanation and not enough examples. It would be helpful to have more practical examples of what you are trying to explain.
The caged system sucks, its crappy barre chords and the way they are laid out, they can damage the hand. Avoid. i hate barre chords and power chords - yuk.
One observation : you talk too fast…
Excellent lesson. I just discovered your channel and have subscribed.
Thank you! Welcome aboard :)
Although you know how good this video is. I feel I must tell you its OUTSTANDING, So cool to learn this
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! :)
Then what are other chords in 1st position pentatonic?
Thanks!
Thank you so much!
