Now, this is teaching! and this is the best crash course ive seen about guitar in youtube. This man clearly has a gift in teaching. thanks brother for this video!
this channel proves that if content is prioritized over consistency then a channel can flourish. I remember subbing like last year and you had like 5k subs or something, and i knew then this channel would blow up.
Excellent talk! This would be useful for any musician, not only guitarists. One thing, I think it's "barre" chord rather than "bar" chord. No biggie. Keep em coming!
No way.. I just started truly studying the guitar after starting a little band as a rhythm guitarists are I just noticed this was posted 3 weeks ago.. the timing is amazing. Cant wait for the deep dive video
I've been playing guitar for 7 years now and I've found this video really useful. At the begging I hesitated if it was for me but after the ending I was very pleased. I will recommend this video to my beginner friends in order to guide them in the basics of guitar. Thank you very much 👍.
this is golden, first thing i watched when i woke up and i got it instantly. rewatching this and copying what you're doing helps me understand a bit better
When you are talking about triads, the triad constructed from the seventh degree of the major scale is a fully diminished triad, it is not half diminished as you state. In your example key of G Major this would be F# A C which is F diminished or Fdim or F (degree symbol) or R b3 b5. The half diminished you mention is from the seventh chord formed from the seventh degree of the major scale aka half diminished seventh (minor 7 b 5) which would be F#m7b5 = F# A C E or R b3 b5 b7. The fully diminished would be Fdim7 = F A C Eb or r b3 b5 bb7 (double flat 7th). This is a common error and I think it stems from 2 issues. First, the seventh degree and seventh chords are often confused. Second, the chord built from the seventh degree is often used as a seventh chord instead of its triad form and is not only a "jazz chord". Its a chromatic passing chord in many pop song (Friends in Low Places by Garth Brooks intro). Nice video as a very basic intro!
I began my guitar journey in 2020, after high school. Was on and off, mostly off, until this year when I was asked to perform “Have You Ever Seen The Rain” for the summer camp that I work for , when I unfortunately said that I could “play” the guitar. Nearly 2 months later and I have fallen back in love with the guitar. I purchased a cheap acoustic-electric Ibanez, and stumbling upon your videos have been a godsend. Maybe I was a bit naive and immature in my previous endeavors with this instrument, but you have shown me that I can grow naturally and efficiently. I can confidently say that you have made me a better player. I have watched every single one of your videos and I can’t wait for more. I will also be purchasing the PRS you recommended in your other videos to get that electric sound. P.S. We need to see your dad’s progress, it’s been a minute and I hope you and him are in good health so that you both can enjoy jamming together for many years to come. Much love from Miami ❤
This was a great guitar tutorial for someone who is looking to fill that most underrated and unsung part of a band: the rhythm guitar(ist). Thanks for uploading; liked it and subscribed.
These videos are so fucking good dude. Real, through usefulness. I keep screenshots and notes. I’ve been playing for years and know what I’m doing - they’re still useful to me to help fill skill gaps. And the roadmap vids transfer to bass, which I’m learning now. You are gold standard.
Just started following your channel. A breath of fresh air from all the other, "I'm going to vaguely explain a guitar-themed concept/exercise, now PLEASE buy my course!" PLEASE tell me you're someday going to follow up with a Lead guitar ordered path. No pressure.
I cannot thank you enough for this videos. I've been practicing guitar on my own for a time now and I'm very interested in understanding music to be able to create my own songs. You really filled the gaps with this excellent explanation that you made. I took notes of everything, now it is the time for practice and more practice.
Timestamps: 1. Open chords and strumming patterns: 0:38 2. Bar chords and accented strumming: 1:49 3. Triads, major and minor scale: 4:50 4. Applied triads, time feel: 6:54 5. Harmonization of major scale (love this part): 9:36 Great video! Over a year of guitar theory simplified into 14 minutes, how do you do this everytime 😂
Kevin, that was an excellent and concise explanation of these concepts that personally took me a while to figure out. This provides a great teaching structure that would focus students and save them months, if not years of time to become proficient. Well done.
This is solid advice! Took me years to figure out some of these things before we had RUclips. I might put harmonization of the major scale before triads and inversions personally. It's good knowledge to have so you can make some interesting choices with the combination of different inverted chords within the key you're playing in. I don't think either order is necessarily right or wrong, I just think that order would work better for me, or someone who thinks/learns the same way I do, not for everybody.
I was just thinking... When is Kevin going to put out a new video and low and behold. Keep it up .. these videos really add major value to beginners like my self
i never really learnt guitar basics, I've been playing guitar by ear for about 12 years now,i used to figure out chords woth the little finger position knowledge i have with zero theory knowledge, this is really helpful, thank you! waiting for the CAGED video!
Love seeing Arrogance Suddenly on your album wall. Such an awesome group. They were so close to making it nationally. Their Lively album may be their best IMHO. Don Dixon had an Intoxicating voice.
Only thing id say this video is missing is to start learning some basic chord progressions. This lets you actaully start using all this information and you can use your ear to start understanding the qualities of certain chord progressions and why they work, for example learning that the 5 chord resolves very satisfyingly back to the 1 chord.
Too good 👍. I just subscribed. I am guitar player and starting basic teaching journey. Very helpful , very well spoken and thorough articulation .Best wishes mate.
The 7 in the major key harmony being "patched" with an inversion ala Beast of Burden really helped me to cement alot of stuff. Also learning how that same scale shape plays out with A roots and going down the neck versus just up.
Level 3 - I was personally challenged with having to learn the major & minor scales to figure triads. The CAGED approach worked better for me in only having to learn the root positions. But I do need to learn those scales eventually.
Hey, I watched your video about the complete guitar roadmap and I think I'm at level 2 or 3, I saw some of your song recommendations for these levels and I wanted to ask you if you think the song R U Mine? By Arctic monkeys would fit that level. It's one of my favorite songs and I really want to learn to play it. From what I saw the chords are pretty simple if you use a capo (on 2) and it has some really cool riffs (I actually already learned the intro riff). Thank you for making videos, I've only just started my guitar journey but you helped me a lot 😊
Kevin, Thank you !! so much for everything if i could ask you any question i wanna ask do u have any advice for getting finger movement synchronized. Time is everything ik this i play 4+ hours a day and you started posting alot of these videos as i picked up the guitar again last year in may and now im doing gigs with my drummer (oldest friend) we are 23 and 24 and we make eachother better and have good chemistry our playing gets better the more we play live and rehearse together. But by no means do i consider myself a “good guitar player” i can improvise well with my drummer and we put out alot of noise for a three piece . I just cant ever play enough where i want to be now is just a matter of more time years till my speed is where i would like it to be😂. Kevin REALLY, thank you, You’ve helped me out alot and so many others.
Yeah, but those patterns aren’t necessary for understanding triads. I wanted to make these shapes as simple as possible, but you can play them with two octaves instead of one
Didn't spend a lot of time on playing great rhythm like title suggests .. It was more basic harmony and intro to chords .. Good stuff but was looking for rhythm goodies .. Also is it really incorrect to groove on the back of the beat ..? Or like how Willie Nelson phrases on the front of the beat ..? It's cool you are compelled to educate .. A serious rhythm video would be cool for a bunch of folks .. What are dance beats, 16th note feel, how to count odd meter grooving etc .. Cheers
Why not also include chords played from the 4th string? They are especially helpful when playing with a bass player or wanting to give some variety to the progression you are playing.
