Just a few months after having played the 69' Woodstock Festival in upstate New York, Jimi Hendrix sat down for an interview with Cream Magazine and talked candidly about having played there. Hendrix said, "I felt like I played a good set at Woodstock considering I was playing with all new musicians almost." "I thought Carlos(Santana) & Johnny(Winter) guitars sounded strong during their sets too." "But of the 3 days worth of music that was played at Woodstock, no one outplayed Alvin Lee." "Alvin put on a guitar clinic during Ten Years After's set at Woodstock, and I really have a lot of respect for his ability and how easily he can pick up a guitar and play anything, be it rock, blues, jazz, or whatever." "They don't come any better than Alvin on a guitar." Those are the words of Jimi Hendrix himself taken from that interview with Cream Magazine published in January, 1970.
Thanks for sharing this. If you ever read this, please sent me a copy/picture of that interview. Searched the net, but cannot find it anywhere, would love to read it!
The rest is great to see, but I can't believe Hendrix said "Alvin put on a guitar clinic for the ages during Ten Years After's set at Woodstock" lol, sounds very modern like something a nerdy music critic trying to make their way up in the company would compose for an article. Alvin Lee stole the show at Woodstock with 'I'm Goin Home.' He woke the entire audience up with that number, akin to the scene in 'Back to the Future' where Michael J. Fox plays the guitar like Hendrix while writhing on the stage; that left the audience speechless! The Woodstock audience had never heard anyone play the guitar like that before! Alvin Lee is definitely one of the most underrated guitar players of all time. He's definitely right up there with Jimmy Page in my book! I envy the lucky few that got to see him play live! RIP Alvin Lee
Agree! Loved when someone from audience gave them a huge watermelon; after performance Alvin put in on his shoulder and walked offstage. He said “We’re going home, by helicopter” in his cool English accent; handsome talented man, whole band was so epic.
He did. Everybody talks about the Hwy and Jimi Hendrix’s Star-Spangled Banner. But in my opinion, it was Alvin Lee, and also Canned Heat who stole the show.
I was fortunate to see Ten Years After live 4 times and agreed that he is the real deal when it comes to guitar playing. There will never be another like him. RIP.
You are absolutely correct I was at this show and a few other TYA Shows in SF. Two shows I was ten feet from him standing in front. He was my favorite artist along with Joe Waish, The Games Gang.

How the hell are these guys not in the R&R HOF? Alvin Lee is one or the top 5 guitarists of all time. And if anyone ever had more fun playing (excellent) bass than Leo Lyons, I've never seen em. The most underrated band. Ever.
@@KittyGrizGriz I have actually chatted online with Leo Lyons and he doesn't seem to care...but...I do god damnit. Wish I knew how to get a big movement started.
Yup! There it is, the inevitable 'underrated' comment. 😂😂. He's good, but nowhere near the top 5. He sure can play blues rock guitar, but 5 million other guitarists, including me, play that same style too. I've been a guitarist for over 40 years and it doesn't matter if you believe me or not, but I wouldn't have any problem at playing everything he did in this video just as well as he did. Tossing in a few fast 16th or 32nd note triplet licks or arpeggios doesn't make a guitarist Hall of Fame material. Innovation does.
saw a few times, loved them--oh Alvin was so cool and such a great player, and at woodstock we brought a 50 power telescope and you could only see his head or his guitar, and the image was inverted so you kinda had to turn around to see it properly and we had a line of people wanting to look-----and he went home by helicopter!
“Alvin Lee and Ten Years After” truly a show to remember both musically and the art of EXPRESSION….absolutely mesmerizing……every instrument in the band clutches it’s full potential and sends it to the stars
Okay. I've been around since 1956 and admittedly I've seen many a guitar player use his mic stand as a slide "affect" but Lee is the only guitarist I've ever seen actually play an effective and precise slide solo using his mic stand. What an under rated and under celebrated guitar player he was. Lee was not just a guitarist but was a technician.
I so agree with ya! He did many things, we are just able to understand afterwards now. Thanks goes to YT and people who uploads these live performances here! Whole band was back then tight, flexible and creative. I can't think much better music than this!
George Penwell : You did not remember or seen Alvin Lee in the mid - seventies , when he appeared at least a half a dozen times on Don Kirchner's Rock Concert ! Alvin Lee was invited back to play so many times , that he was basically the house band on the Rock Concert program !
From Paris with love...
I am 36 years old and have listened to and LOVED the Blues since I was little. My grandmother listened to the genre. But I am bewildered as all hell that I have completely overlooked or missed this man Alvin Lee completely until 4 days ago😳 I am not ok with it still but haven’t quit listening since. First song I listened to 4 days ago that captivated my soul, air, reason and more was Bluest Blues with George Harrison on the slide guitar he plays so perfectly and I can’t get enough! My neighbors, family, kids, friends, coworkers and beyond are going to hear and love it as much as I do from here on out!
Excellent concert, they don't get any better than this concert period. Love the way Alvin Lee commands that big Gibson 335 the entire concert, he's getting a wonderful tone out of it and his classic Marshall amp stacks. The closing of Going Home is a work of blues guitar art, then we get not one but three songs during one encore... now that's the real deal, the entire band has a passion for performing live in concert! Bill Graham was the man, guess I'm fortunate he enjoyed live rock music, based on the rock bands he recruited to play at his venues he would have made one heck of a professional sports recruiter. After this, I'm going over to watch the Allman Brothers at another Bill Grahm venue, the Fillmore East to get a late-night fix of Duane Allman & Dicky Betts playing the lead guitar parts to Whipping Post off each other, that would be unheard of back in the day, now it's not even a stretch!
Their was No curfew at SF Winterland, groups played as many encores as they wanted. I was at this show, one of my first SF Winterland Shows. Bill Graham never cut anyone off if they wanted to play longer. Some groups played an extra half hour. Allman Brothers were one of those groups, along with TYA.
Thanks to ever posted such underrated band Alvin Lee is an amazing guitarist put right with all the greats. And that bass player is a mad man he rocks it.
Saw them twice in the 70's. Good stuff. Will never forget Leo Lyons during 'Good Morning Little Schoolgirl', and of course Alvin Lee. Yeah, he could play. One of those bands that kind of got overlooked. So much good music in the 70s.
Saw these guys play a year or so after Woodstock. Thought they were the best individual performers I had heard. Best guitar, best bass, best drums, best organ. They were so talented.
Well, Everybody My Age (born 1949) who remembers Woodstock KNEW Alvin Lee, it was Managers, Record Companeys Etc who Undertook to Ruin his carrier. Recorded Live: I LIVED IN SAN FRANCISCO in 1975 - Winterland (San Francisco, CA)
Hunky, handsome Alvin Lee with “Big Red” 🎸. Love his guitar face; he becomes one with his guitar, an extension of his genius. Phenomenal band, so wish I’d seen them live.
well i would and im just discovering them, love em but theres a little matter of Grand Funk Railroad??? sorry mate my love for Mark and the boys is just tooooooo deep!! lol TYA close tho????
We were at this show-went to every time they played anywhere in the Bay Area. First time we saw them was at the Fillmore in the Fillmore District in SF. Played lead in band for Canned Heat. When Big Bear came on stage, he said-I don't know who those guys are but they should be where we are. The next weekend they were. Long time ago. Great that shows were recorded back then I remember the two cameras on the floor. Sad story is that a fire in Grahams office destroyed a lot of the videos. We would go to the Fillmore West, Winterland, Avalon Ballroom and venues all over the Bay Area to see any band lay. A buddy of mine would meet every Thursday after work and go to the Fillmore regardless of who played. Still have posters from the time. Thursdays an Sundays were the only days they handed out the large posters. Other days you would get the small handbills. Those were some fun times.
This is an awesome concert. With perspective of time we see few rock guitarists who were emotive. Most were reserved, distant, unapproachable, or hipper than thou. Alvin wore his heart on his sleeve in songwriting and stage presence. Name any others please---- besides Hendrix--- who were that emotive. This is great guitar rock music. Ten Years After deserves to take their place in the highest echelon alongside The Who, Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver, Grateful Dead, Santana, The Kinks, The Velvet Underground, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Roxy Music, Bowie, Jeff Beck, The Rolling Stones, and The Beatles..
Looks like a great list of the classic era white blues players (except for Jimi of course). Nice of you to include Kossoff and Gallagher, probably the best British blues players. I would also add Roy Buchanan to the list, master of the slide. Someone mentioned Jeff Beck; I love Jeff Beck's work but to me he's not really a blues player (only some of his work with The Yardbirds and the first two Jeff Beck Group albums), and neither is Ritchie, they're much more than strictly blues players. And SRV - not exactly classic era, and if we're talking 'bout 80s and 90s, you can't leave out the amazing talents of Jeff Healy. But lets' not forget the pioneers: Muddy Waters, BB King, Freddie King, Abert King, Albert Collins, and the amazing Buddy Guy, and a few others I forgot.

Yeah, right! Once I had a thought that he's kind of a second person in the band compared to Alvin Lee... let's say without Leo Lyons TYA wouldn't be that special. The same could be said about Ric Lee and Chick Churchill though.
@@robostomp19Dinosaur jr`s Lou Barlow Has the same weird, outta their heaz techniquee. Though the music of TYA & Dinosaur isnt the same time, and not comparable, the Bass playin is at least as crazy as the howling whahwhah guitar infernos de James Mascis. The most creative Drums, bass guitar & guitar trinity i ever heard is Led Zeppelin´s John Paul Jones, John Bonham & Jimmy Page . Also incredible blues players, but with more different vocal styles. so, cause i still feel like an 80´s flower punk brat i prefer the straighter, powefull mood, the sound of Alvin & the TYA gives me( mostottatime- when i´m cycling through my breathing lyquid sonic room, both are wallpainting sound genius...)
Alvin has been propably the biggest inspiration for my own, modest guitarplaying. I started playing in 1980 and still I know, there is no way to become as good or fast as he was! I saw him live in 1986 in my hometown Mannheim in Germany. And it wasn't his best time. Nevertheless he will ever be one of my "Lifetime Heroes".
Personnel: Alvin Lee - lead vocals, guitar Chick Churchill - organ Leo Lyons - bass Ric Lee - drums Summary: Extraordinary blues/rock guitarist Alvin Lee had already begun pursuing his solo career in earnest by the time he returned for the 28th and final U.S. tour of the original Ten Years After. Upon completion of the 1975 tour, TYA would split up and not return until a reunion was staged in 1989. Although a cult fave, the band burst onto the world music scene after it appeared in the documentary film, Woodstock, one of whose highlights was the performance of "I'm Goin' Home" by Lee and the band. This show, recorded at Bill Graham's Winterland ballroom, opens with a rockin' (but incomplete) version of the band's radio hit, "Rock & Roll Music To The World." They follow it with one their classics, "Love Like A Man." Muddy Water's "Good Morning Little School Girl," is next, and leads to long and tasty slow blues.

I saw them 12 days after this show! Alvin and Leo were musicians possessed. SO glad I got to see them live.
One of my best concert Ten Years After
saw a few times, loved them--oh Alvin was so cool and such a great player, and at woodstock we brought a 50 power telescope and you could only see his head or his guitar, and the image was inverted so you kinda had to turn around to see it properly and we had a line of people wanting to look-----and he went home by helicopter!
Alvin Lee such a talent and freedom of expression.
He is free.
⚡️❤️🎸✌️
In die jaren vaak live gezien in Ahoy. Geweldige gitarist!
I think this is the most undervalued group. For me they are the best
Alvin de los mejores requintistas del rock, y ten years after , sin duda , mi banda favorita.
“Alvin Lee and Ten Years After” truly a show to remember both musically and the art of EXPRESSION….absolutely mesmerizing……every instrument in the band clutches it’s full potential and sends it to the stars
Watching this performance has left me WET with a sprig of orgasmic tears

The good old days, just guitar, base, drum, nothing complicated, good music, good entertainment!
👍👍👍
Alvin Lee was as great as any of them!!!!
Незабываемо!!!!!.Мы тебя помним и любим
Alvin lее.
First concert I ever saw..Ten Years After1970 Fox Theater Hackensack NJ. Put them in HOF!
SAW them open for Led Zep in Asbury Park same year!
A 14 anni, sono del '64,ascoltai 'adventures of a young organ' e 'i can't keep from crying'. Da allora non li ho mai più mollati!
Phenomenal performance by a truly legendary band. I'm so grateful that stuff like this is still around! This fucking KICKS MAJOR ASS!
George Penwell. Saw this show my senior year. my best guitarist ever. he broke us off !!!
I so agree with ya! He did many things, we are just able to understand afterwards now. Thanks goes to YT and people who uploads these live performances here! Whole band was back then tight, flexible and creative. I can't think much better music than this!
And he couldn't read or write music.
Yes! Alvin playing “Big Red”, he’s so awesome 😎
Slide with a mic stand?! Absolutely epic. The whole band is on fire.
I could watch this 1000 times. Especially I can’t keep from crying. 💙⚡️
Alvin is incredible
Thanks for sharing 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
Thanks to ever posted such underrated band Alvin Lee is an amazing guitarist put right with all the greats. And that bass player is a mad man he rocks it.
The legendary Alvin Lee and Ten Years After...I still love listening to their albums ❤️ all of them!!!
This guy is cool 😎........
Ehi ALVIN... you're so great!!!
Alvin Lee a rock legend..... he is sorely missed....
Un gran rockera. !!!!
Totally underrated!! One of the best!
Not underrated,evry Oldschool knows him...🍻✌
I'll be back :)
Yeah saw ten years after in usher hall Edinburgh
Saw them twice in the 70's. Good stuff. Will never forget Leo Lyons during 'Good Morning Little Schoolgirl', and of course Alvin Lee. Yeah, he could play. One of those bands that kind of got overlooked. So much good music in the 70s.
Man, this dude sang lead vocals and played lead guitar at the same time...what a fucking awesome talent he was!
and a harmonica too boot.
@@ronallen2603 "A Space In Time" album, had so many good songs!
Queeeee?, no se puede cantar y tocar la guitarra al mismo tiempo, será difícil?
Always been one of my favorite bands! Still is. SEXY Alvin Lee you rocked my world!
RIP Alvin Lee, one of the greatest musicians ever! His facial expressions are worthy as he literally becomes one with his guitar!
Now that I'm old I'm watching this entire generation pass on.
Perhaps my favorite guitar slinger of all time. This is how I like my Rock'n'Roll: Loud, fast and bluesy.
God please bless his soul and his family...
A fantastic show with Ten Years After at their best, each and every one of them, brilliant guitar work from one of the best ever 💛💙
Ça me rajeuni de 55 ans
Saw these guys play a year or so after Woodstock. Thought they were the best individual performers I had heard. Best guitar, best bass, best drums, best organ. They were so talented.
The one that got away. Phenomenal group that never got the spotlight except for us very few that know about them.
Yes left off of Rolling Stone's greatest 100 guitarists" Fucking pathetic.
Tore it up at Woodstock ‘69, “by helicopter”.😎
Hunky, handsome Alvin Lee with
“Big Red” 🎸. Love his guitar face; he becomes one with his guitar, an extension of his genius. Phenomenal band, so wish I’d seen them live.
the only time I got t see alvin to play live was at a small venue with another guitar player Roy Buchanan - the place went crazy
Live they were one of the best bands I ever had the privilege to see. Alvin Lee just had a sound that made you get up and move. A great band
Alvin can walk all over that fretboad effortlessly Amazing talent.
This show is a true blues rock class!
I want to thank everyone here for sharing their music because of you all I have been able to hear this incredible band

I hear you brother
I think we can all conclude Ten Years After is the coolest band of all time.
I totally agree with you John 👍👍
I do agree as well for 10 yes.after is a far 2 proficient but underestimated hard rock white blues " high octane " ace acre band, ye' know ?
Definitely one of the best Alvin Lee 🎸
That is a fact
well i would and im just discovering them, love em but theres a little matter of Grand Funk Railroad??? sorry mate my love for Mark and the boys is just tooooooo deep!! lol TYA close tho????
one of the best bands ever
Very cool,thank you for sharing.
fantastic. rings bbback great memories. Mark in the. USA
Ten Years After deserves to take their place in the highest echelon alongside The Who, Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver, Grateful Dead, Santana, The Kinks, The Velvet Underground, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Roxy Music, Bowie, Jeff Beck, The Rolling Stones, and The Beatles..
amen
⚡️✨🎸✨⚡️
One of the greatest. under rated, and forgotten guitarist of all time. R.I.P Alvin Lee. You will forever live in my heart!
thank u
But lets' not forget the pioneers: Muddy Waters, BB King, Freddie King, Abert King, Albert Collins, and the amazing Buddy Guy, and a few others I forgot.
liar
Far from being forgotten!
Saw Alvin Lee in Stuttgart Germany in 1972 then again in 1975 in Las Vegas Nothing Compares to Alvin and I'm only 25 LOL Lee

I saw Alvin Lee and what he called his band then, Ten Years Later, in 1978 in Houston. I drove down there from Fort Hood to visit cousins.
The more I listen to TYA, the more I feel Leo Lyons is a greatly underrated bass player. Watching him do that hammerstroke is impressive.
Yeah, right! Once I had a thought that he's kind of a second person in the band compared to Alvin Lee... let's say without Leo Lyons TYA wouldn't be that special. The same could be said about Ric Lee and Chick Churchill though.
Leo slaps davie504
Leo is like the energizer bunny that battery stays fully charged!
@@maxvaldez6987 Yeah, I wonder what a shity mess, the bass guitar has done, to be treatened like that
The best EVER band in live concerts!
Just so good, will still be watched thousands of years after.
Sweet Little Sixteen's version is simply sensational. Alvin Lee had a lot of charisma!
No words to describe this Rockin Band, always LOVE them!
AMEN
Me encantas Alvin
Alvin has been propably the biggest inspiration for my own, modest guitarplaying. I started playing in 1980 and still I know, there is no way to become as good or fast as he was! I saw him live in 1986 in my hometown Mannheim in Germany. And it wasn't his best time. Nevertheless he will ever be one of my "Lifetime Heroes".
Personnel:
Alvin Lee - lead vocals, guitar
Chick Churchill - organ
Leo Lyons - bass
Ric Lee - drums
Summary:
Extraordinary blues/rock guitarist Alvin Lee had already begun pursuing his solo career in earnest by the time he returned for the 28th and final U.S. tour of the original Ten Years After.
The most underrated in my book. Especially for guitar player and singer him and Steve Marriot. Should be in everybody’s at least top 50. Top 10 in my book. Kinda happy they’re underrated I’d probably be tired of them like Stones,Zep,Floyd all them Europe bands. Rory Gallagher too. Another underrated that’s at least in my top 20. Happy my dad Raised me on good tunes. I’m now 40 and love schooling old folks on their favorites. RIP Alvin really wish I got to enjoy you live.
Steve was awesome so was Alvin, like another lever
