    Personnel:
Alvin Lee - lead vocals, guitar
    Chick Churchill - organ
    Leo Lyons - bass
    Ric Lee - drums
    Summary:
Extraordinary blues/rock guitarist Alvin Lee had already begun pursuing his solo career in earnest by the time he returned for the 28th and final U.S. tour of the original Ten Years After. Upon completion of the 1975 tour, TYA would split up and not return until a reunion was staged in 1989.
Although a cult fave, the band burst onto the world music scene after it appeared in the documentary film, Woodstock, one of whose highlights was the performance of "I'm Goin' Home" by Lee and the band. This show, recorded at Bill Graham's Winterland ballroom, opens with a rockin' (but incomplete) version of the band's radio hit, "Rock & Roll Music To The World." They follow it with one their classics, "Love Like A Man." Muddy Water's "Good Morning Little School Girl," is next, and leads to long and tasty slow blues.
A 20-minute version of "I Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes" is followed by a 12- minute but incomplete "I'm Going Home." After a souped-up version of Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen," Lee and the band close with two of their own hits: "Choo Choo Mama" and "Baby, Won't You Let Me Rock 'n' Roll You."
One of the biggest blues/rock acts on the planet between 1969 and 1974, Ten Years After could attribute their far reaching success to two things: Promoter Bill Graham and their appearance in the landmark music documentary Woodstock. Graham was among the earliest U.S. promoters to book the band, and he made them a staple act at both the Fillmore East and West, and of course, Winterland.
By the time this show was recorded. TYA had become primarily a vehicle for Alvin Lee's blistering guitar work, its songs comprised of equal parts rock, blues, and jazz. In 1972, the band would leave Decca Records (the label that signed them in 1967), and move to Columbia's corporate home. Columbia would take the band in a more radio friendly/pop driven direction (hence, the hit single "I'd Love To Change The World"). Frustrated with the popular music trend, Alvin Lee left the band, which disbanded soon after the second Columbia release in 1975.
The original lineup made one reunion LP and did one more tour in 1988/89 before disbanding again. In 2003, Ric Lee assembled the group again, although Alvin would not participate. He was replaced by guitarist Joe Gooch, and the band is still recording and touring today.

Among the many things I LOVE about Alvin Lee, even beyond his amazing artistry, was his integrity, and the fact that he shunned the fame and the big money, and walked away from TYA when the record labels started to demand more "commercially" acceptable material from him. So, he said later days, if I can't make the music I want to make with the big record labels, I'll just do my own thing without them...and started his own record label and recording studio. My favorite song in the entire world, ever since I first heard it in 1972 when I was 13 year old boy, , was and is and always will be: "Convention Prevention"!!! I have always tried to be true, authentic and true, and still strive to be that today, all these years later... I was devoted to that idea prior to hearing this amazing song, but the fact the Alvin wrote this, after his own heart's desire to be authentic and true, made me love this guy so much! I wept when he died...and still can't believe he is gone! Godspeed, Alvin!

That's Alvin Lee and I was blessed to have seen Alvin Lee and Ten Years After June 16, 1974. I've seen a LOT of great bands, the management announced it was going to be too late for the headliner Ten Years After to play. Blue Oyster Cult was tearing it up with Don't Fear The Reaper. Everyone booed them off the stage and I have always felt kinda bad about it. We would have LOVED to have seen them too but it was Alvin Lee we bought tickets to see. He was rated the fastest guitar player on the planet. I don't know why I remember the date, maybe because we were mean to BCO.

Just an awesome display of techniques including octaves, atonal tapping, sweep picking, violin style lines, use of dynamics, otherworldly speed, double stops, vicious slides and pulls again at break neck speed, string lowering and all done with a great deal of showmanship not to mention soulful vocals. Folks this is 1975. Hard to believe as it foreshadows a lot of what became modern guitar technique and shredding. The tempi of tunes like Woodchopper's Ball and Going Home played live predates much of the technically driven stuff we today hear people playing against backing tracks here on RUclips. And not even included in Rollingstone ragazine top 100 guitar players. Great post. Rest my case. R.I.P. Alvin.

There are a lot of bands I am glad I got to see back in the 70s especially the early 70s.
Two of them with all original members were The Allman Brothers.
AND I SAW TEN YEARS AFTER HALF A DOZEN TIMES. Fucking blew me away everytime. Watching that band especially Alvin was pure greatness.

I saw Ten Years After when I was in high school in the mid seventies. I didn`t realize at the time what a talent I was watching. Too busy partying and acting like an ass to pay attention. I`m 60 yrs. old now, and I`ll say to all the young people-- Have a fun life but don`t waste time with your mind being in a place where it doesn`t belong.

One of the Greatest Blues Rock bands ever constructed. Alvin Lee was a True master of his form. We met one rainy night in Chicago at my home club. The Checkerboard Lounge. He just walked into the club. He called no attention to himself. I was on the bandstand. With Magic Slim. Alvin came up and sat in with us. A real gentleman. We made him feel so welcome he said. The great pleasure of my life to meet and jam with my hero. God bless his eternal soul....

I am lucky enough to have the Isle of Wigh/Atlanta 1970 festival double album; and this song, a 20 minute far superior version is there. Get it if you can. Ten Years After was a super band of gifted musicians. They are far more than "I am Going Home", the song included on the Woodstock film and record. This version is also really great; the quality of the performance is fantastic.

Why they aren´t so popular like the other? I don´t understand. I was 14 years old and was really just getting into knowing and following rock bands black sabboth, alice cooper, deep purple and Neil young were my first that I liked then I heard ten years after their music to me seems to be unique and listening to it was like a person finding an oasis in the desert that you could always find again once you experienced the feeling inside like a great Spirit has desended down from the heavens and has marked you as one of the chosen ones who has the right chemistry to appreciate life and have the finest attribute one can have and that is loyalty. When I listen to ten years after I feel so undescribably stimulated that it's not possible that it's just music but is a gift from the heavens that not everybody shall receive who listens to it but I was one of the lucky people who won the greatest lottery ever and that is I know my spirit will always love on because I got Alvin Lee and ten years after in my blood and nothing can kill me
