I always felt that Alvin went for speed and virtuosity at the expense of lyricism and musicality. Good technically, but too repetitive. I would not rate him as high as Hendrix .
Alvin Lee, Rory Gallagher and Roy Buchanan were probably the most criminally underrated guitarists of their time. Jeff Healey was another one that came a bit later.
well, we know that great guitar plyaers because they had quite a lot of appreciation back then including radio and tv appearances. so certainly not underrated, rather forgotten.
have always loved this song. Heard it by so many artists but I got to say this version is unreal. Ten Years after you Rock. Alvin Lee wow just wow that man had soul.
Saw him with Johnny winter one fateful night back in 81 I think....that night will go with me to my grave, when they put me under for my dirt nap, my soul will be remembering the slide work, the picking...the sweat flying...it was outside philly"The Brandywine club"....RIP Alvin....anybody who reads this GO SEE JOHNNY , he still Rocks HARD
I saw Humble Pie on April 12, 1971, opening for Black Sabbath, in Alexandria, VA (In a 3000 capacity skating rink!). A 16 year old's very first concert. I saw TYA in Birmingham, AL in '73, and there again about '75 (or '76). Alvin was in the process of leaving TYA at that time, so I didn't expect him to show up. But he did. Who'd they play with in Providence? Was it close to April?
Alvin Lee was the Mack! He could play circles around almost all of his peers. (save maybe, Jimi Hendrix or Johnny Winter) And the way he was so unassuming about it. This is the shit!
The youth of today & beyond will sadly miss bands like Ten Years After, Yardbirds etc........ Great bands that wrote songs that had meaning and substance. Rock & Roll will never die.
i agree with you...ummm...Alvin Lee wrote most of the songs he performed. THIS song, however...SPOONFULL was written by the great...MR. BASSOLOGY...Willie Dixon...
Ten Years After they had the Blues flowing through their veins. One of the best groups of the seventies. I herad them in Munich play LIVE exactly five times. They rocked the crowd like nobody else! Unfortunately the brilliant guitarist (Alvin Lee) died quite a while ago already. They continued without him, but in my opinion it wasn`t the same Jörg J.
Genius...superb blues, saw them live a few times in my youth, Toby Jug, Marquee, and festivals I think. Alvin Lee one of the best blues men about at the time
Alvin Lee You are the on of soulful Guitarplayer and Singer...with positiv vibrations...heartfull sounds...fantastic Guitarsolis... R I P Dear Alvin...Your Musik is swinging on Earth and in Heaven... Dr.Ilja Lasaroff.Bulgarien.

oh no : ( sooo sad. just heard it from here. now i have the feeling the world just lost something of high value!! rest in peace dude. thinking of what you and your guitar gave us all these years with your sound.
I'm proud to say i got to see him live one time at the Keystone in Palo Alto Ca in 1983. He was amazing ! A true maniac on the fretboard. I saw Jerry G. there a bunch of times. Great memories of the good ole days. R.I.P. Alvin ! Theres some good jammin goin on in Rock & Roll heaven !
Good old fashioned psychedelic blues rock. I’m so glad I recently discovered this fantastic footage! It’s nice to have another reference to show people how good/underrated of a guitarist Alvin Lee was besides his fiery Woodstock performance of “I’m Going Home”. #RIP
Long Live Alvin...69 long years is indeed vintage, tastier than the sweetest wine-Champagne or Chardonnays....Fascinating guitar work- intriguing & unparalleled....My taste for TYA began circa 69 and over time the blues have become more bluesy.....such blues rock rendition with a powerful & mellifluous voice will always remain a mystery
TEN YEARS AFTER with "Alvin Lee" these guys breath BLUES, eat BLUES, dream BLUES and they live for BLUES......That was always their Way of life Man...!!!! 🤟🤟🤟🎸🎸🎸
I "discovered" TYA last year... knew who they were, but never really gave them a chance. Wholly hell. They are awesome. Alvin Lee was one of the best ever...but Leo Lyons?!?!?! THAT guy is a masterful bass player. Psssst is my favorite. Leo's playing was so magical on that album. One thing I am not sure I've seen mentioned...how about a comparison of Steve Marriott and Alvin Lee. Would you agree they are very similar in style? Soulful to the bone. Both were blues guitar gods.... Steve Marriott after Humble Pie was incredible.
What a superb guitarist possibly one of the best in the world C1968. This is Alvin Lee from TYA Big in the States. many years on Chyrsalis label with Chris Wright.
@polymath7 My thoughts are based on the old live Cream version on RUclips where they jam with no audience - watched it about 75 times. It's one of the best on RUclips. So to assert anything is "better" is a tall, tall order. Let's just say they are both among the finest examples of what authentic rock music is all about - high energy, skilled musicians who are totally inside the sound, volume and burning hot vacuum tubes, transcendent emotions, eccentric style. Yeah life is good.
As an older dude who grew up in this era, it amazes me how this generation of musicians were all so young! What a time that was.
Schools still taught music back in the day.
They were playing for the love of the muzik and then letting the fame and all that comes with it follow 💯😁❤️🔥🎶
Is 2024 and I'm just now listening to this Alvin Lee still kicks ass!
Timeless CLASSIC ROCK 🪨

ALVIN WAS one of the BEST GUITARISTS ALIVE AND HE COULD SING. R.I.P
I always felt that Alvin went for speed and virtuosity at the expense of lyricism and musicality. Good technically, but too repetitive. I would not rate him as high as Hendrix .
I did not know he was dead!...
How and when was that? Could I see on youtube?
Let me see then
Очень не Хило!
Alvin Lee, Rory Gallagher and Roy Buchanan were probably the most criminally underrated guitarists of their time. Jeff Healey was another one that came a bit later.
I met Jeff Healey, nice guy. Sold a few of his trad jazz albums
Don’t forget Ronnie Montrose!!

Love your list, I'd add Ian Thornly to round out the modern contingent.
You can hear the soul of the man and you feel the Blues runnin' through his veins in this version of this classic
have always loved this song. Heard it by so many artists but I got to say this version is unreal. Ten Years after you Rock. Alvin Lee wow just wow that man had soul.
Seen playing this at Chicago stadium 78/79

One of our best guitarists, without a doubt.
My husband had the pleasure of seeing them in Providence, RI in 1971 with Humble pie
RightOne40 that’s awesome! What a lucky man! I’m jealous lol
@@JumpinJAKEFlash Saw them open for The Mothers of Invention in a tent in Framingham, MA in 1969.

I've loved this for nearly 50 years and I had no idea it had been filmed. Extraordinary thing the interweb!
Willie Dixon wrote this and about 90% of the blues tunes the British kids brought to America and we had no clue all that music was from Chicago
R.I.P. Alvin Lee. The golden age of rock and roll just passed a little bit further into history.
Alvin Lee was the Mack! He could play circles around almost all of his peers. (save maybe, Jimi Hendrix or Johnny Winter) And the way he was so unassuming about it. This is the shit!

Rock & Roll will never die.
Meaning and substance? What? Ten Years After? Clearly I'm missing something!
Who gives a shit what you think. You are clearly a fool!
They're out there just under the radar. Check out Black Pistol Fire - that dude has enough rock n roll for the next 20 years or so all by himself. :)
Substance it did :D
i agree with you...ummm...Alvin Lee wrote most of the songs he performed. THIS song, however...SPOONFULL was written by the great...MR. BASSOLOGY...Willie Dixon...
The bass guitarist is moving like ginger baker what a savage.
Jack Bruce😁
You mean Jack Bruce
Ginger never made any grooves like bass playing the guy plays fast and hard tempos
@@Glockinmyrawriedude Ginger Bakers Toad is crazy mature and laid back!

They should be in the Rock & Roll HOF!!!
Yeah, so am I. Great Great Alvin, seen him twice!!! Love you all my friends. Willy from Amsterdam
One of the best bands to see live back in the day.
Alvin Lee performed bigly at Woodstock. His drummer was great too.
blues in the richest sense. alvin... you had it in your head... made the music, and gave it to us. thanks with love
Leo Lyons SLAPS that Bass...This was one of the best bands to see live..I saw them about 20 times in and around L.A.
So beautiful just imagining your experiences! 💞💞 Jealous as frig too!

A Gibson 335 with a single coil added in between the 2 homebuckers.Alvin had gibson make that guitar especially for him
And Leo captures Willie Dixons bass.Outstanding!
Possibly the greatest lead guitar playing in history.
Absolutely Incredible!
I Have Never Seen this Footage Before and I Have Been Studying Master Lees Work Since the 70's!

Great shots of the drummer ! Amazing drum kit and miking position

Saw Alvin and ten years after ( twice)....... amazing guitarist!!!!
Indeed . What a time that was !!!! Glad to be there !
Damn right. Clapton was excellent, but I think Lee was right at the top with the best of them. Power, speed and a shitload of soul. Great tone too.
Pura crema ten year after super
I believe this is the best version of Spoonful I have ever heard, I love Woodchopper's Ball also. Alvin Lee never got the credit he should have.
I'm loving his version.rip beautiful ALVIN
Cream’s 22 minute live version from 1967. Look it up on RUclips. It wipes the floor with this.
The Bloomfield/Butterfield cover is hot stuff too...
Howlin Wolf was untouchable. But Clapton, Bruce and Baker immortalized it.
@@Dagger_323 Yep, that version is also masterful.
Stoned out of his head, but playing better than anybody could possibly imagine!
leo definitely tested the physical integrity of a jazz bass he didnt play it he assaulted it
One of Favorite bands......and this one sexy song❤
TYA is just superb. R.I.P. Alvin Lee
Notes like raindrops on a blues rooftop

Ten Years After had better chops than more famous late 60's bands!
Ainda que nessa epoca tinha 16 anos, vivi toda essa epoca de ouro, quando queriamos curtir e namorar muito.

I just hear this beautiful music and forget everything, who plays it... it doesn't matter. I feel so happy to live in the era i could hear this song.

Big Red with no stickers not even the peace sign, this is way back when. He was really ripping the blues.
A permanent and infallible source of energy - that's what Alvin Lee was about. And that is what Art is about.
EXCELENTE , NO ME CANSO DE ESCUCHAR TANTO VIRTUOSISMO EN ESA EPOCA
