She has a very good starting position: her eyes and jawbone are very similar to Carrie Fisher's back in the day, but seeing her working on her makeup made me realize that she needed quite serious skills to get from there to the point of "we need a double for young Carrie Fisher! I know, let's call that RUclipsr, what's her name? Macksy?" Very impressive, indeed
I love how she's so funny but also admits she's not perfect. Watching old videos and then newer ones she's really getting good over time. It's fun to see!
Yeah, a lot of stuff in the costume designs of Star Wars are historically inspired. For instance, Darth Vader's helmet was inspired by samurai helmets! I think it's really neat!
How about an episode of "But Make it (More) Modern"? Like taking a person or character from pre 1900s and reimagining them in the 1930s or 40s. You have so many creative ideas that I would love to see what you could do.
Quick tip my sewing teacher taught me, during the depression they used to use the small pieces of soap and use it as chalk. Save up the little leftover soap bits and choose the best color for your fabric, it washes right off.
I was about to leave the same comment, where I live seamstress chalk is expensive for the sewing projects I have/make (totebags for groceries esp) and is also eco-friendly since you are using those left-over bits and not throwing them away.
I love that her sewing videos encompass every part of the sewing process, from the unbridled excitement of starting a project, to "oh god what have i done" and finishing with "YAS but what's next?!"

Some people can only feel good about themselves by putting others down. It's nothing new, but they gain quite easy volume on social media. I think shes awesome just for even trying. I'm too lazy to even try.
I don't think people always do it with the purpose of condescending or putting people down. They're probably just reacting and saying what they actually think lol, that's generally how people watch videos, by reacting with their immediate emotions and thoughts. Like if you've done something before and made an obvious or big mistake (which literally everyone does, no one is perfect) you'd probably have a big reaction to seeing someone else do it. Or if there is an easier way of doing something and you see someone do it the hardest way, you'd likely also have a big reaction. People could definitely be more thoughtful of how their words affect others, especially people newer to something, but I don't think most people are saying it for the sole purpose of looking down on her lol. And almost everyone does this (or at least thinks it) with something they've done for a while, especially when they see a complete beginner (which Rachel isn't, just an example)
Carrie has such a specific and iconic look. The fact that you were able to capture it and look so incredibly like her is amazing. Very well done. I am so loving this series. So awesome. Well done!
What if you did Princess Buttercup from Princess Bride as a but make it vintage? (P.s that would literally make my life if my favorite youtuber did a vintage cosplay of my favorite film 😅)
Rachel, I think you have grown so much as a creator I have enjoyed watching you becoming a seamstress, hairdresser, make-up guru, fashion designer enjoying yourself in front of the camera and the number one thing is you and Frodo with each other.plus you are so adorable and a natural beauty. Thank You for making these kind of videos for us.🐕💐✨💞💛💚
Absolutely blown away by this entire look. Showed my husband the final reveal and he legit thought it was Carrie Fisher in a different dress. Love love love this. Love this style of dress and it suits Carrie’s original dress very well.
This is not an easy dress to do! You did really well! You’ve actually inspired me to do my own vintage character! A female 1940s Doctor Strange! 😁 though I got very lucky and found the dress I needed on line. Thank you for sharing your sewing journey!
Hege Valle I will! I should be getting the dress today! You can follow me on instagram at aurorbelle.fashions if you want to see the other sewing things I do! 😁
What a great vintage interpretation of Princess Leia! The Jane Eyre hair is perfect. You nailed Carrie's mouth! Frodo is the funniest commentator ever!
It’s actually the current sizes in stores that are made up, not the pattern sizes. The pattern sizes are what store sizes use to be and the stores have slowly deflated the numbers to make people feel better about themselves (which is stilly because it’s just a number. It means nothing about you). It’s called vanity sizing. You should start by measuring yourself and finding what pattern company size would fit you best (I always go by bust (or hips of it’s a skirt) and tailor in from there). The companies (simplicity, vogue, McCall’s, etc) all have similar sizing but it’s good to check before you buy. Especially since many pattern companies have sizes 8-14 and 16-20 in different envelopes. For reference I’m a 8/10 and wear 14/16 patterns. It seems like madness but you’ll get used to it.
pettook for me it's the opposite! If I use the pattern measurements supplied (cough I'm looking at you simplicity) the garments always end up oversized. Which is crazy to me because it's the measurements they gave?? So how can they be off??
All I can say is wow Rachel. Love watching you bravely sew things I don’t think is ever attempt while keeping up fantastic comedic relief😂 Maybe you could do a “but make it vintage” for Hermione or Luna Lovegood?🤔
Oooooh, what if you did a “Famous artwork inspired vintage outfits” vid/series??? You could do some Monet WaterLillies inspired 1950s getup or a Rembrandt ANYTHING 1930s inspired threads. 🤷🏼♀️
I'm sitting here watching Sewing and Crafts RUclips, thinking maybe I should try my hand at sewing, maybe start with a simple nightshirt or something...and here's Rachel saying "I'm a newbie, let's make a historical ballgown." Truly an inspiration.
I'm here over a year later and perhaps you'll never see this but... Wow. This is a 10/10 Rachel Maksy video. I am AMAZED at the amount of hard work you put into this. 👏👏👏 Rachel, well done, and thanks for brightening my quarantine.
I have been soooo impressed with the progress you have made in your sewing. In earlier videos, I wished you had someone to help you--yes, I'm old enough to be your grandmother--but, you are really doing very well. This was a very involved pattern!!! And you did it, girl!!! :-)
I saved watching this because I just knew it would be epic. Two seconds in and we have Frodo in a bandolier. Mike drop already. 🎤 How you do not rule RUclips with your talent and vision is beyond me. But continue making videos, Rachel. You are our only hope. 😉
Crazy good!!! Also I'm always so impressed at how much you change your face just by shaping your nose and eyebrows. No matter how much I love the styles though, my favorite parts of your videos might be the Frodo edits. Here's a vote for a Frodo compilation video!
HOLY MOLY GUACAMOLE! amazing and you captured her looks and style sooo well I'm really impressed. Never even thought of a Jane Eyre styles Leia. ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Sweetie even Bernadette Banner says there's no such thing as true historical accuracy as we have wifi and Google public library Joanns most Important electric light and Ac (sorry for calling you sweetie I'm a Texas born Oklahoma girl sweet tea is my blood its force of habit I mean nothing horrible about it) I wish you all the best in your sewing venture 💙💙
I feel like Cathy Hay and all of the ones that are really deep this is their degree/ line of work (dress historians) would agree though. That while you can study all the stitching techniques and the preservation and the style. You're never going to be sitting there by candle light with salt cured ham and such because your ice box is a cellar and your house is a one maybe 2 room thing with 4 people in it you have to boil water to bathe. I'm studying to be an art history major double majoring in museum studies and at one point I wanted to do Dress history. Its only now seeing Bernadettes videos that I realize how big it is. But I found something I loved in art history and museum studies interning in the collections department if I could work there even in a small sense not a curatorial sense I'd be so happy
This is... just incredible. I would have loved to see you doing some of her lines (including the ones with the "floating" British accent), especially if you'd looked at your furbaby and said, "Will someone get this walking carpet out of my way?" Your pupper is adorable, BTW.
I am constantly amazed at your bravery! I've been sewing for yeeeeeeaaaaaaaars and I would never attempt a pattern like this. You look fantastic lovely lady!
Your sewing is getting really good so quickly! That's how I costume as well - jump right in and learn the techniques needed for the project if I don't already know them. You should come to Costume College in LA next July! It's a whole 3 day convention of costuming, cosplay, making foam armour, and everything! I think you'd love it! And you get to wear all your stuff too!
This is impressive! I think you did a really great job. I would love to see you recreate Rachael from Blade Runner. I think that she would be a perfect character for this series.
You're brave, Butterick patterns are my Kryptonite. I love how Frodo "helps" you. It's so nice to know that I'm not the only one that sews with assistance. It's awesome that you're teaching yourself, that's the best way to learn.
I am so happy you started reframing it as "novice at sewing" instead of "I suck at sewing." It is [touchy-feely incoming] showing a growth mindset instead of a fixed one and IT'S SO AWESOME. Also, there were moments where you dead-up looked like Carrie and it got me like OMG SPACE MOM
Dude!!! The force AND the schwartz is strong with you! I'm new to sewing as well, I understand the struggle. The project was ambitious but it turned out so good!
This is the first time your skills have left me *speechless*. I'm so impressed as both a sewist and vintage/history/literature fan. You're an inspiration 👏👏👏
Sweet mother of pearl, you totally contorted your face into Carrie's with make-up!!! Stunningly uncanny transformation! Fantastic effort! You killed it!
I am always impressed by your ability to fight past that scary sewing moment, adapt, and move on. The more you sew, the better you get. Any failure is just a learning process, anything hard is just new.
As someone who has both a dog and two cats running around when she's trying to sew, I totally love the part about Frodo getting mud on the fabric because that is a thing that happens. Pets always want to be right in the middle of whatever we are doing.
"You're not in the South, you're distressed!" Ha! Love it! I used to belong to a historical reenactment group and I've made several gowns. They are not easy! I'm very impressed that you took on a project so advanced as a novice seamstress. Love your channel :)
You are getting better every single time!!! Yay Rachel. Please PLEASE let me send you an early 70's learn to sew book. I bet I have 5. I'm a 4-H sewing judge. Press all the fabric before cutting; gathering is best done by machine: two to three rows close together using the widest stitch and leaving long tails of thread. And sizes have changed 2-3 times since 1980, as the size of the population increased. You see why us old folks laugh when folks say, "But Marilyn Monroe wore a 12 or even a 14!" It's because that would be an "8" today.....and you know, boobs. But wait, amazing and good look!!! A+++++++ for your efforts every time.
Well, I’m an experienced historical costumer, and you did SO GREAT on this. In fact I’m in awe because you’re reminding me of something I’d forgotten - namely, how freaking brave beginning sewers are. How brave I was, and how brave you are. Launching into something this complex and giving yourself four days to do it, and getting through and ending up with something you’re pleased with... standing ovation here. And I love how you’re picking out the things you’ve learned without beating yourself up. You’re a legend. I’m still new here and I’m so enjoying your videos! Awesome work!
So I know this is late but I have a tip for sizing: On the pattern pieces there should be a "finished garment measurement". Those tend to be bigger than the size guides. I use this trick all the time to get the fit I'm going for.
Holy smokes what an awesome transformation! The makeup really brought Carrie through and the Jane touch was just such a fantastic match - can’t wait to see more!
Was anyone else impressed at how much she managed to make herself look like Carrie Fisher?

Marge Simpson in XVIIIth century court dress. Just imagine the enormous blue wig that would be freakin hilarious and oddly accurate.

I would LOVE to see that, which outfit tho.😊😊
Sansa Stark but make it 1950s. A direwolf skirt instead of a poodle skirt!

Marilyn Monroe was a size 14.
Suzanne Butterfield 14 was considered a ‘small’ back then, so equivalent would be. 8-10 up/aus or 4-6 US - she was tiny

@@TheDeerhunter316 wow it's what I want to do too ! But it's not exactly the same course of study because I'm French
Cerebro.crash I love the way Noelle (@costuming_drama) puts it - “historically adequate” is what we should aim for 😆
@@CathyHay Oh my gosh! Cathy, you're amazing!
i consider myself a pretty decent sewer, but i don’t think even i would attempt a dress so ambitious. props to you, rachel! it looks beautiful.
One minute ago?? Last time i was this early jaclyn hill still had a career in makeup
TheaterDoge13 Lol hehehehe
😂😂😂😂
Well damn .... 😬😂
😁😂😃
🔥🔥🔥
Hearing the words “I should go out and socialize” is a scary experience nowadays
I would love to see you do a Star Trek women's uniform.
This is... just incredible. I would have loved to see you doing some of her lines (including the ones with the "floating" British accent), especially if you'd looked at your furbaby and said, "Will someone get this walking carpet out of my way?"
Your pupper is adorable, BTW.
It's awesome that you're teaching yourself, that's the best way to learn.
wow Rachel, what a GREAT job! I love it! you look just like her! and that dress, beautiful job!!! love that paw print!
NAILED IT! you look so much like Carrie. Absolutely beautiful 😍
Dude!!! The force AND the schwartz is strong with you!
I'm new to sewing as well, I understand the struggle. The project was ambitious but it turned out so good!
COMB THE DESERT!
This is the first time your skills have left me *speechless*. I'm so impressed as both a sewist and vintage/history/literature fan. You're an inspiration 👏👏👏
Ahh thank you bb 😭❤️
Seamstress :)
@@syum. Hehe! I stand corrected! 😃
Sweet mother of pearl, you totally contorted your face into Carrie's with make-up!!! Stunningly uncanny transformation! Fantastic effort! You killed it!
Your ability to transform yourself to such a close resemblance to someone else never ceases to amaze me!
I am always impressed by your ability to fight past that scary sewing moment, adapt, and move on. The more you sew, the better you get. Any failure is just a learning process, anything hard is just new.
"Oh Rachel, you sweet, sweet de-shelled hermit crab."
Literally spit out the water I was drinking. XD
Dude it’s AMAZING!!!
I’ve been sewing for years and I’d be so nervous to do something that involved but you smashed it out of the park!
Heheee thank you so much lovely!!!
So I know this is late but I have a tip for sizing: On the pattern pieces there should be a "finished garment measurement". Those tend to be bigger than the size guides. I use this trick all the time to get the fit I'm going for.
Thanks, going through this problem atm.
I love watching newer sewists. I feel like I'm with my people!
It always amazes me what you can do with makeup. Thank you!
I love that you included Frodo in it more on purpose than accidentally. Love Frodo. He stole the scene.
I love it so much! I think a Daniëlle Barbarac from ever after in a 1930 style would look beautifull.
Love her !!!
Oh that would be lovely!
Honestly from some angles you looked so much like Carrie Fisher! So impressed with this project
The patterns at joanns allllllways confused me! If I could read them I would make my whole wardrobe and dresses like this!! 😄
It just takes practice, and maybe a reference book.
The fact that she designed and made a historical look that still captured Leia is impressive. In my eyes this dress is flawless.
That vignette with Frodo? "Butt Naked Vintage?" I'm dyin', here! XD
Heehhehee😊😊😊
Holy smokes what an awesome transformation! The makeup really brought Carrie through and the Jane touch was just such a fantastic match - can’t wait to see more!
