    Two-piece dresses were a thing in the fifties. (Cough, cough, embarrassedly admitting my age) I had a dress composed of a sleeveless bodice, a gathered skirt, and a ruched cummerbund all made of red and white cotton gingham. I felt so grown-up in it. Your videos never fail to bring a smile, both for your creativity and artistry but also for your unselfconscious silliness and humor. The music is a plus. Do anything you want to. I'll tune in and watch.

      I sewed a two-piece dress last year from a 1950s pattern and as someone who is about three different sizes (like, 8-10 bust, 10-16 waist, 12-14 hip in Australian sizes) having the garment in two pieces is actually an improvement. If you're wondering of course I massively changed the size from the original - graded down at the bust (it was a size 14 vintage pattern which is a 34 inch bust, I'm about 33 inches and I still had to take it in), graded way up at the waist and just generally graded the skirt part up by a whole bunch and then had to take it back in because ??? mystery.

    • @TheSaneHatter

      True enough, that it was a flattering cut & shape. But all that blue-jean fabric must have had her sweating like a pig, and therein lay the bad taste.

    • @findingbeautyinthepain8965
      @findingbeautyinthepain8965 2 года назад +19

      I disagree. Formal events should require formal wear. I really dislike that celebs influenced people to stop getting dressed up, ever. For example, weddings are sooooo expensive (for the couple) today, and the guests come wearing cotton/spandex dresses from Forever 21. I also highly doubt Brittany’s dress was sustainable. I’m sure the designers used new denim. They just used different types. Nothing I’m saying should be taken as a criticism of Brittany herself. She is great and has been treated so unfairly! We just have different taste, which is perfectly okay. I also don’t blame her if new denim was used for it since sustainability wasn’t a widely known concept back then. 😊

    • @joangallagher9754
      @joangallagher9754 2 года назад +38

      In the 70’s we recycled denim as it was very expensive. We turned old jeans into skirts and bags , patched and embroidered around holes so recycling been around for a long time.

    • @silviadeluca957
      @silviadeluca957 2 года назад +92

      @@findingbeautyinthepain8965 may I note that also "dressing fancy" on occasions is also a made up concept? The whole "I have to buy a new dress for this year's prom" is a totally made up capitalist and consumerist construct, since people back in the days had one "good" dress to wear on important occasions and that was it. Sure, the quality was way better, but still modest outfits. For some people "good" ones were just those which didn't have holes in them. Many wore their mother's or grandmother's wedding dresses, or a dress which was sewed for them by their family, and that was pretty common. I think there's nothing bad in being economically conscious and simple.

    Cute! I like the final look.
    Re: ironing. A lifesaving tip my good friend (and professional long-arm quilter) shared with me for cheat “ironing” large pieces of fabric: toss the fabric in a warm dryer with a wet hand towel. The steam will take out the wrinkles, and you just gotta pull the fabric out immediately and hang or lay flat of whatever. Its worked for me several times.

    Wanna avoid ironing a huge wad of fabric? Take “ye olde wrinkled fabric” along with a dampened washcloth or hand towel and place in dryer. Dry on medium heat for 15-20 minutes and remove as soon as the dryer timer goes off. Then POOF! - no more wrinkles and no ironing required!!

    You are the very best inspiration my dear. So many sewing and crafting channels are overwhelming with their hyper precision and "math" and Rachel is like "Look! Make adorable things you like and that fit you out of what you have or can repurpose. It's not that hard if you just start! Start with a shape that works, cover it with the thing you want and Boom Bam Baby!" You rock and we need you in this world. Thank you for all you do!

    Second - a suggestion: to help keep the pressure off ya and so u can enjoy your projects more. Why not continue finishing projects as much as you have time for, but then every so often do a "finishing my projects the way I Want video" with like a q and a or something you find low key.

    Your makeup transformations never fail to astonish me. I have no skill with a makeup brush and your conturing is incredible. You don't need to downplay that it's a subtle look - it does so much to transform you!
    I know you hate sewing advice but this is said with love - the gaping on the bust comes from using the pinafore style with just some small darts for shaping. For a true sweetheart neckline, you really want to use princess seams. They will get you a nice curve that forms around the bustline.
    Anyway, this was a lot of fun! I'm glad to see the return of the But Make It Vintage challenges! I feel like they're super creative and have fun results.
