Bollings' biggest problem is being American. He's finished 8th at the trials last year. He's a top 15 American in the 400. That's great. That will get him on some relays indoors. There's too much talent in the USA, and there's nothing wrong with Bollings as a professional. He has won some relay medals and got some checks for it in championships.
I agree and I also disagree. Boling’s issue is his performance combined with his skin color led folks to have high expectations of him and put him into shoes he cannot fit. He and Abby were such a big deal because we simply haven’t been seeing folks with his skin color thrive so much in sprints, and assume he’s much better than he is. He’s a great performer, but like you mentioned, there are TONS of other Americans in this tough crowd. It’s not just him…most American athletes are so talented that if there wasn’t a 3-Persons from each Nation per event standard (exception with those who have a buy), USA could easily fill the World/Olympic finals of most events. Boling is an excellent athlete, but just like most others in this country, he’s just “one of them”, unfortunately. Also, I don’t think the skin color thing is a bad thing…when the first person of a certain color in USA breaks through barriers, it is a huge moment and I support folks boosting him up in tandem with his skin color becuase it does put him in record books…good for him.
Nothing wrong with him, breaking into the senior ranks isn't easy, no matter how great you were as a junior. Sometimes if you're fortunate in finding the right coach to maximize your gift, you'll be able to excel. Even the incredible Sir Usain Bolt struggled in the senior ranks at first.
He does have lots of flaws in his performance, though, and most on his level do not have those flaws. He runs way too tense and with too much emotion, instead of running with technique and skill. In the lower ranks, our talent can get us through this; personally, MOST of my entire track career was my natural talent, pure grit, and refusal to lose…I insisted upon catching folks. Then, when I a pause in my coaching and coached myself, I called myself running “80%”, and I was suddenly MUCH FASTER overnight! I got so fast that I smoked some folks whom use to be faster than me in a race when they showed up at the track after I’d already been practicing for hours, asked to race me, and couldn’t believe how badly I smoked them when they were fresh. Boling runs tight and hard, which slows him down and makes him extremely inconsistent. He’s gotta learn to relax (my old problem also, as I’ve stated), and run a more technical race than using his grit for everything. Today, I’m far more technical than anything…I slow down my insanely fast natural frequency to ensure I get maximum distance and optimal performance with each step, instead of rushing to try and “run fast”. Technique first, then throw in the grit in the race, but the grit needs to be technical also.
@@stevie586 Most of his run is still his HS stuff.... He had a great stride for top end speed but it still could've been better. The acceleration could have always been better, and he could have always had more raw power.

The University of Georgia coaches screwed Matthew Boling over, from a mental standpoint, by expecting him to be the "Swiss Army Knife" that can do EVERY sprint distance from 60 meters to 400 meters, plus the Long Jump,. both indoors and outdoors. This was the time that Matt needed to be focusing his development on ONE main event, plus one secondary event, and NOTHING ELSE. I agree 100%! So many friends from my Junior USATF Teams ran completely different events in World Championships than I’ve ever seen them run. So many championship cycles, I’m like, ‘wait, I never knew he/she ran this event”! Even myself, I’m a hurdle specialist, but I’m beginning my Masters USATF training in just the sprints w/no hurdles involved for now. They tried to make Boling look like something he is not. Most of the athletes can run various events and have always run them in school, etc., but in college and the senior rank, they strategically choose certain events. Boling needs to focus on the 400M only if he wants to try and make it…maybe even focus on learning to run the 800M since he has strength and endurance. But, he’s not a senior level 100/200M runner…he simply isn’t, unfortunately, especially not in this country.
He’s gonna have to LJ to stay relevant. The sponsors will be demanding bigger results which is why he switched to the open 400 for World Champs potential at 2023 Outdoor Nattys. He blew it at the Oly Trials last summer. Those same sponsors won’t stay filling his pockets for another Olympic Quad without a breakthrough. And he needs too many sprinters to retire, get popped, pull up lame or just completely fall apart before he sees another Team USA Outdoor relay pool.
I couldn’t agree more. I have been saying this for years. Georgia never wanted him to win, they just abused him. I checked his times, they made him slower in the 100m. The fastest 100m running in high school somehow got slower in college.. what a terrible coaching staff.
The video is more focused on Rai Benjamin than Matthew Boling. It'll be interesting to see what Boling does the rest of this yearn. He was an 8-meter long jumper, that may be his best bet going forward as the USA is overloaded with world-class 200m/400m runners. Keep doing some of the 200m and 400m races (good cross training) but concentrate on the long jump. An 8-meter jump would have qualified him for the Olympics last year.
Yeah, but I get Coach's point: there's LEVELS to this. Boling is now competing at THE highest level, meaning there are just guys who have more talent than he does. It's not that there's something "wrong with" Boling-the Rai Benjamins and Vernon Norwoods of the world just exist. But a lot of fans don't really get that; they just think "the guy who used to be 1st all the time is now struggling to make the podium, wtf"
The 300 is actually run very often indoors. Boling ran a personal best at NB. He was up against maybe the two best in the world in that race and acted sad after the race (I was there) but he had nothing to be ashamed of.

As I learned playing baseball, as you rise up the levels, at each successive level you find that everybody at the new level was an all-star at the previous level. Eventually, you hit a level where you are no longer an all-star. At that point, your career is effectively over. With track & field, you have to be in the top 3 in your event in the United States to make the team. That is a tough task. Matthew had won some races last year or medalled. He must have qualified or invited to improve.. Julian Alfred ran the 300 m race and won; her training partner came in second; the rest were no contedt.. Alfred is being trained in the USA in which she never acknowledged: she is no mentiondf the name of her Canadian American coach in Texas who has no elite American athletes that he trained, not 🚫 one: Alfred, Smith and the Irish athletes, NEVER an American, but I stand corrected.. prove me wrong. Matthew is an American athlete, recognized by the public and invited to Invitational meets depending upon his performance.. He is like Fred Kerby, up and down in his career.. Worlds is coming up and USATF is sending two athletes, not in less, they have a bye.. The question ⁉️ is would Matthew make progress in his performance gradually and consistently because every race is different!!!
There are no surprises here to me, all did what they were suppose to do. Rai is the King, Vernon is the elder still in the game. Boiling is a youngster who so for has had a great career, but don't turn any NFL calls down, Mr. Boiling All top Sprinters in the USA get them.🤔
There's nothing wrong with Boling other than he simply isn't good enough....LOL! Sure, he is an elite runner, but not as elite as the top professionals.....I do think he should consider becoming a decathlete.....he is still young and he is an excellent athlete and he has an awesome work ethic.....He has the frame to be a top level decathlete as well. I do think if he took a year to work at it he could easily be an 8K decathlete.....now, the rest would be up to him in getting closer to the 9K decathlete and becoming world class.....THAT would not be easy, but I do think it might be possible for him.....He would have to balance the throwing events especially the shot put and the discus as I think he would be fine in the javelin.....all the other events I believe he could put up times, heights and distances that would be close or on par with some of the current elite decathletes.......anyway, just my two cents. Finally, I don't think people understand what a great runner Rai Benjamin is and how multi-talented he is as a sprinter so it's nice to see him get some well deserved recognition here.....and as far as Vernon Norwood, YES, another very underrated but highly talented runner for the USA and VERY consistent! When he retires he will be missed.
What's the definition of 'problem'?. Not having to work a job but still have more money than the rest of us will earn in a lifetime?.. I'll gladly take his problem.
Long jump for Boling. Do the 100m in the background and develop yourself over the next few years; eventually he would work it out. As an aside, he's a talented 400m runner, but that is not his gift. Again, LJ and 100m.
For me, Boling runs far more emotionally than technically. It is a shame that anyone from this generation and on that level would make the mistakes Boling makes. When Elaine and ShaCarri run, we see that relaxation. When Bolt, Lyles, etc., runs, we see that relaxation. The BEST performers are relaxed…not tight. Even with Shelly Anne, Jacko, Tyson Gay, etc., LOOKING a bit intense when they run/ran, they’re still relaxing and that focus on their faces has always been them focused on their technique…not emotion. Boling needs to learn how to properly relax if he wants to be a contender on this level, because they’re not gonna keep giving him a handout by including him on huge relays if he doesn’t deliver. More technique, less emotion, and he can grow.
Bolings run is the 200m he was indoor national champ twice in that event never won anything in 400m or 100m. He is better in the indoor 200m then the outdoor some people are just better indoor then they are out door.

Yeah and I heard boiling is clean. As in no peds.
Pre or post college 😂😂😂😂😂
Boling peaked already. There I said it. Hope he proves me wrong.
Long jump for Boling. Do the 100m in the background and develop yourself over the next few years; eventually he would work it out. As an aside, he's a talented 400m runner, but that is not his gift. Again, LJ and 100m.
For some reason, you remind me of Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men.
The USA 400m pool is way too deep! And that’s without considering HS kids! The 100 a 200 are deeper. Matt is 6’. Go 400h or back to LJ.
He tapped out. He's never going to do anything in those races.
Big shot Bob not Rob.
Bolings run is the 200m he was indoor national champ twice in that event never won anything in 400m or 100m. He is better in the indoor 200m then the outdoor some people are just better indoor then they are out door.
He started on the juice in way too soon..his body is done...using on high school that's what no one will admit
Norwood is a relay bully !
Big shot Rob has 7 Rings not 5
Matthew was competitive.
He was over run.....3 sprint events + longjump
32.8 is fast
He was never a long sprinter.
My name is Anslem Bartholomew. I was watching your RUclips channel and I see that you made a mistake dream dream RICHARD came fought in the 400 m finals at the Olympics
Can u say ShitttHound
I think his coaches had no plan to help him improve just race, race and race!!! Just over trained for mediocrity.
Terrible coaching. His form has barely changed from school!
He is not an underachiever... he is simply overrated...
A lot of out-of-work coaches on here
Robert Horry won 7 championships
Yup. Rockets Lakers, & Spurs. Mr. Sixth Man
There is a caption in the video where I corrected it.
He’s just wack
