  • I can't believe it but it's true! There are landlord problems from my previous rental. They are definitely trying it on! But, I am taking refuge and softness from the little, simple, ordinary things in life. Counting my blessings in all the ways. Gratitude in all things... I'm also sharing about my health struggles aswell atm and especially about being alone in the week whilst James is away. There's of course some painting popped in there too in my messy studio! Thank you so much for keeping me company in this little corner of RUclips. Love you all to bits, Biggest, Softest, Everythings, Wendy. Xx

I am 66( single), after many failed relationships. I have little art studio in my little apartment. I stumbled upon your channel this year. You feel like a " sister", a friend. I struggle daily with anxiety, depression. Perhaps hormones play a part? I relate to every word you say.Your life seems so mirrored to mine. You are an inspiration to me and advice is gold. I love watching your art journey. There are days I need to push myself to get out of house and not fall into an artistic " slump". There are days...when I have no energy to get up and go.It is important for our mental care and to be gentle on ourselves. You are fortunate to have James and he seems to be very understanding. We all have struggles on this road called " life" and we need to be kind and encouraging to all.God Bless you and Thankyou for all the positive words. I love your creativity and art work. Cheers from Quebec, Canada xx

Good that you reached out to share what you're experiencing. Even though it's not easily visible, you're part of a community of kindred spirits here, and our hearts go out to you. Many of us share similar challenges, and it helps to feel ourselves part of a sisterhood, and to be uplifted when we feel wobbly. And it helps to know that something as simple as sharing our feelings can uplift someone else as well. So you have the magic of our love and support, and the magic of the fairy realm holding you. Lean into it, breathe in some fairy dust, and we'll get through these times together.

Please, please, reach out to get some professional help. I lost my twin sister to suicide six years ago and my whole family, and me especially will never get over it. I miss my sister every minute of every day. Please, know that you are loved and irreplaceable. Please, see a psychiatrist. Depression is a real illness, that you cannot cure just by watching videos, even if they help a little. Big, big hugs

I feel completely in tune with your message today, Wendy. In the last fortnight I’ve been dealing with everything from a sudden family bereavement, to another close family member having a breakdown, to being stranded in a huge snowstorm. Tonight I sat in front of my bedroom mirror and thought - well, at least my earrings looked nice today, and I have a warm bed to get in. My bookcase also looks colourful and interesting. Small things to help me put one foot in front of the other. Small moments of appreciating life. Thank you for so generously sharing yours and helping me to feel a sense of community this evening 🌸🌸🌸

My daughter had the same issue moving out of her flat last year. They were charged because there was dust….they didn’t actually do the check until 3 weeks after they moved out so no wonder there was dust on the surfaces!!! Very crafty these landlords. I hope you get it sorted because we were all witness to your cleaning process. Xx

      @alkhemiegypt 9 месяцев назад +3

I had the same situation 20 years ago. They went behind a door and found dust on the skirting board. They go out of their way to retain the deposit. There was a time when the landlord would pay to have the house cleaned between tenants. Those days are long gone! Now they squeeze as much money as they can from tenants; and they can because more people are renting nowadays.

As an ex property manager - I’m gobsmacked. The condition of which you found it is the condition in which you can leave it (but I’m the same and would clean within an inch of my life), however any decent landlord would see the tenant has cleaned and provide an opportunity to go back to clean the missed spot. This is clearly motivated by money and if was he in Victoria, Australia would be thrown out of VCAT. This landlord is kidding themselves. All the best lovely. ❤

I’m glad you share your stories with us. In the USA it seems people want to always portray themselves as never having bad days and they are always so productive. I know some of my family members do that. It somehow makes me feel like I’m not good enough. I try to remember it’s ok to slow down and take care of your mental and physical heath. I’m glad you are so honest!! Hope everything works out with the landlord. I don’t think they are doing the right thing. Love your paintings so much! Blessings to you and have a merry Christmas!!🌲🤗

Just like you I moved from an apartment to a house, and I remember worrying about getting my deposit back because I had spilled a little bit of bleach which left a small white stain on the carpet in the corner of the living room. When their employee came to check the level of cleanliness before I left, I told him about the stain right away and showed him where it was. He was a super nice guy and said that this is a part of natural wear and tear and the apartment by itself looks very clean. He didn't go from corner to corner to look for cobwebs, etc, but he made a general assessment like a decent human being.
Those decorated places you showed in the video are magical!

That's why I never knock myself out in cleaning an apartment that I am vacating. I scrub the toilet and vacuum, that's about it. David Sedaris calls it a "redecorating fee" and allows himself to do what he wants in terms of painting walls, etc. Once i embraced the idea of a redecorating fee, i have a lot more peace and satisfaction.

Hi Wendy this is my job, your landlord should have put the deposit in a deposit scheme, if they are charging you unreasonably you need to get into touch with the bond scheme send them before and after photos and even your video they will make a judgement. This is totally unreasonable, trust me I inspect private rented houses for the local authority your flat was in the top 95% of properties. You could try your local council private sector housing department, often a phone call can put a stop to it. But definitely get in touch with the bond scheme, if they haven’t used a bond scheme then definitely get in touch with the LA as this is an offence. Good luck. Lovely vlog although my blood is boiling for you this exploitation makes me cross xxx

I didn’t comment after you left the flat, but I watched the entire cleaning video and what you did and the shape it was in when you left was incredible! Also expecting you to live up to a contract you didn’t sign seems basically wrong. And if the clause wasn’t in it when you signed it you didn’t agree to that clause. That’s common sense! So, don’t give up, unless you want to for your own sake!

We totes got this! (Thanks to your daughter!) My "healthy habits and self-care" include starting my day gently with a cup of tea, having healthy snack options of raw veggies with a savoury, non-salty spice sprinkle, daily yoga stretching, daily reading (my choice - whether non-fiction or fiction), the option of having a half-day of "being small" (doing fun stuff with childish glee - drawing, window shopping, having a favourite meal, reading, watching videos, etc.), finding gratitude for the simplest things. Please do get some professional advice about the old landlord and what options are available to resolve the issue, so that you can move on with less internal stress.
I think most of us love the colours and softness of Prismacolours, but are frustrated by the breakable leads. I had taken to using a sharpener that just removes the wood, and then using a sanding pad to get a point to avoid the breakage, with a moderate degree of satisfaction. It just takes time and care, for which i rarely have patience! But like many things in life, the results are worth the effort.😅
Many of us have long-standing health issues that challenge us - life's path is one we make, and is sometimes more like hacking our way through a jungle rather than strolling along a paved walkway. We must do what we can to stay strong and healthy, and take a breath, count our blessings, smell the roses, before confronting the next obstacle in our path. And sometimes we have to step back and sharpen our tools, and gather strength before moving forward. Sometimes its a matter of reminding ourselves that we posess our mental and emotional strength to wield our machete (figuratively, of course) and move forward on our path.
Enjoy settling into your new home, find the things that fill your cup (and remember to do them - yes, smoothies!), sharpen your machete and catch your breath, cocoon if you need (it's that time of year, consider vitamin D and possibly light therapy) and even take time to be small.
Sending love, light, and squishy hugs, and you can borrow my machete if you need!😂(probably feeling more like a character from The African Queen than Indiana Jones!)
And, no matter if we are thousands of miles away, for those that care, a thought, a wish and a hope is always right there. Gentle hugs always to my kindred spirits 🤗

My landlord is trying to keep my entire damage deposit because her 12 year old washing machine in our building stopped working while we were renting it, and she is trying to bring us to court for "vandalism" because of it as well, saying we are responsible for it breaking.... It feels so utterly powerless and frustrating to be in these positions with landlords. I'm only 24 and it's hard for me to rationalize these things and be able to keep moving forwards despite it. I live in Australia and rent through a real estate. Every time we have to move, we are forced to pay for professional cleaning, carpet cleaning, and pest control, and it eats up our entire rental bond. So we never get anything back. I’m like you, Wendy; we leave a place spotless, and it feels so unfair to lose our entire bond every single time. I hate having to rent! 😒 xx

In Australia and have been renting for 45 years. When you have to move it is a massive expense and spotless is never good enough. Punished for the slackness of others maybe? A lease is almost useless as they can give you a few weeks notice and out you go.
We have never moved in to a spotless house. Pretty crook I reckon😮

    • @Sharon_L
      @Sharon_L 8 месяцев назад +1

I’m in the exact same situation as both of you. The system here in Australia is stacked against you if you’re a renter. It’s completely unfair. Our agent even demands that our 6 monthly inspections be completely spotless. We had to find a house in two weeks in 2021 because the owner decided to sell, and there were few houses around, prices had skyrocketed, and we had to pay hundreds of dollars to get both houses cleaned. The house we were forced out of now rents for $200 a week more than two years ago, after being the same price for 5 years.

The government in Australia who do not build public housing use and abuse investors. During COVID landlords had to support people who lost jobs and couldn’t pay rent. It was the belligerent governments causing the harm. In our street a person with drug addictions mental health issues trashed her rental and was behind in rent. Others sneak in dogs cats that do a lot of damage. Gardens are neglected etc Morals what are morals these days? It’s a mixed upside down world we are living in.

I really struggled with landlords in the UK… I had an apartment in Edinburgh that when we moved in had awful sticky counters with dried soda stains and a literal used condom in a cabinet, and when we moved out, we got charged £20 per light bulb because we hadn’t put new light bulbs in (how could they tell?? They were all working) and a cleaning fee because there was one cobweb behind a bureau that was physically too large for us to move…
The other one was in London, and I was moving back to the US, and they just refused to give me my deposit, no reason. Stopped responding to my calls and emails and just knew once I moved away, I wouldn’t be able to do anything about it. 😢

It really drains me. Oh for a cold climate. I love your suggestions about the little things, that's how I am living right now. Your life seems very similar to mine, even down to the daily green smoothies.Have a wonderful Christmas 🎄 🎉❤

We had the same situation with a landlord. We had paid to have the apt. cleaned, but he wanted us to pay for a new stove, not bc it was damaged but bc it was old. And he accused us of stealing light fixtures we had bought. It worked out bc his partner had already signed off that everything was ok. In NY we never paid last month's rent bc they never gave deposits back. Don't know how it is now.
For 7 years I have had chronic fatigue like symptoms. They do tests, say I am ok, shrug and offer me anti depressants , which I refuse of course. My life has changed massively.
Moving is one of the most stressful things in life.

Thankyou for your latest video Wendy,
I enjoy watching you paint or draw, it's always interesting to see the end result. I have quite a few of the pens you mentioned they do dry out quite quickly. It's unbelievable what some landlords think they can get away with. imagine how landlords would react if anyone did leave the property just as they found them. uproar for sure.
Keep safe and warm, I hibernate each winter for a few weeks simply restock food etc, batten down the hatches, people are used to me not being around for a while , I enjoy my own company and find lots to do indoors or not as the case may be. It's recharging the batteries , Following natures way , We are not machines after all,

Due to my sever anxiety Wendy, I have not been out and about since 2000. So nearly 4 years now. I only go out to walk my dog from my front door, and I live in a rural place, and sold my car, as I could not drive it, due to the anxiety, so it was just a waste sitting there. I just do not seem to be able to help myself in moving forward for some reason? But I am so grateful for the life I have, and try and be positive in my outlook, and love being kind to others. But it only takes one unkind word from the few human beings I see, to make my day sad, as I am sooo over sensitive. xxx

I think there must be some universal estate agent scam going on. We vacated on a Thursday, were instructed to leave the keys on the kitchen bench because the agent couldn’t check the property until the Friday morning. Thankfully we took photos because I received an email the following day for a cleaning fee because a bird left its business on the balcony railing and apparently we failed to clean it before leaving. The photos proved the poo wasn’t there when we left 😄 Absolutely ridiculous! The certainly is a power dynamic in these situations. You really have to tick all the boxes just to ensure you don’t get ripped off. Keep smiling and creating. Life is weird sometimes.

Hi Wendy, can relate to you in so many ways ! Over last few years struggled with my health , problems with neck and back and really quite bad menopausal symptoms, anxiety being the worst ! Can’t work out if it’s menopause, covid or just the mad state of world that has made me want to cocoon in my own space , maybe all three!! Really do not enjoy crowds and would rather stay indoors or out in nature where it’s quiet. Husband has had quite a few health problems recently too and also problems with pets . Sometimes think the world has gone mad 😫. Just want to let you know though that watching you and James really helps as you seem to say it how it is , warts and all and don’t try to pretend everything is perfect but on the other hand can remind us to appreciate all the good things too ! Hope you sort things out with landlord. The past year ive suffered such symptoms as well...some days i feel normal, very little pain but more and more days have been debilitating fatigue and horrendous pain in my muscles and joints..
ive struggled terribly with foggy mind and migraines as well, cant seem to focus. its so frustrating as i want to get on, but just cant muster the energy.
i will say that ive suffered the past 4 years with loss..of my dad, and now my mom is very ill...loss of my job and side job, car, home everything when i had to walk away to care for my parents. ..so i can't know if what im going through is my trying to deal with all that sorrow or something more...what makes it the most frustrating is that im trying to start over to move on to care for my mom but there are days i can hardly get to the restroom and back to bed...
overwhelm has also seemed to steal even my desire to do somthung as simple as read a book or even bathe...i struggle with needeing to work and all the care my mom needs...its so overwhelming trying to juggle just that that i have nothing else left.
i have found that if i just focus on one thing even if all I do that day is clean up dishes or just myself up helps...i try to cheer myself on in them. ..its so easy to beat ourselves down for not doing enough when in fact we are putting so much on our list that we set ourselves up for defeat.
im tired of being defeated....tired of all the loss...but its me focusing on those thoughts that are part of the problem...i have found that in praise and thankfulness has done more for my spirits than anything else so have started a praise and blessing gratitude journal with a limited supply of art materials to do each day when i have a moment....to fill that time with thankfulness for the time i have with my mom to help her...for our food...for everything its funny how that cup fills and overflows with joy and happiness in contentment and peace...this is where healing begins...
i still have pain and struggle but doing this is better than any medicine and helps keep me going.

I'm a "landlord" in Scotland. I'm gobsmacked. You are an exceptional tenant in my books. If the system is similar and the landlord had to lodge your deposit with an approved third party, then it shouldn't be too difficult to prove you're entitled to receive it back in full. To have part or full deposit withheld, a bit of skirting missed by the hoover and a cleaning cloth is not going to cut it. Find out who the company that holds your deposit is (your landlord should have copied you in on those details) and give them a call, explaining your position and that you have all the evidence. Unless the story is substantially different (you've left huge stains on the carpets requiring a carpet cleaning company, the oven's a mess or the bath looks like a body's been dissolved in there), I think he's wasting his time. The problem is, of course, that the Government is making it so hard for the "landlords" they encouraged, when it suited them, to become "landlords" in the first place, that a great deal are not only not "raking" it in, they're often paying for the tenants to live in the properties (what with mortgages, insurances, agency fees, safety checks, registration, voids, repairs, etc, etc, never mind the tenants who think they can live free of charge, often bankrupting good people who don't deserve that), so, sad though it is, it's hardly surprising that some are taking their lead from Government practice of trying to wrangle more cash out of the public where they can. Doesn't mean it's right, though.

Given outside 10 days is too late. I'm with you that any modifications need to be signed by all parties. Do you have a rental authority especially suppottive of tenants? maybe give them a dingle and see what advice they can give. I think landlords are increasingly trying to squeeze more juice out of an orange than what there is. if you get my drift.
I'm having absent memory problems so I was wondering if you could make a video focusing on your preferred/favourite art materials like brands etc.

If you continue to have problems please let the Deposit Protection Scheme deal with it. They will 100% find in your favour. So many LL try on this utter rubbish, and rely on people not fighting it. All you need to do is go online to the Scheme your deposit is lodged with, and open a case. It may take a while, but you are so right this is definitely a battle worth fighting. Good luck! And for future ref, LL cannot legally demand a professional clean as that is their responsibility, all a tenant needs to do is a normal domestic clean.

In the U.S. landlords HAVE to clean carpets and paint before new tenants move in. They can't charge the prior tenant for this cleaning. There is yearly maintenance they have to do such as new furnace filters, a/c units, vents etc. I also know that some landlods do not do their own inspections, but rather depend on hired crews to do this for them. I hope you can settle this dispute to your satisfaction.

They are called narcissists & they seem to have come out of the woodwork, or have become more obvious since “ you know what “ & all that rubbish.
I’m gob smacked at the reaction of the landlord, but at the same time, like I said before, here they are, larger than life.
We know the world is a weird place right now, but shine your light even brighter & really piss them off!! “They” can’t bear it when we continue to shine our inner light for everyone to swim around in…💕💕🌸

OK a comment from a landlord: No matter what... I always charge a cleaning fee, but that is stated in the lease. I consider wear and tear from use and only expect the property to be released back to me "broom clean". Any additional cleaning the tenant does is on the tenant. I hire a professional with specifications on how I want it, so that my properties are all cleaned the same with each tenant's departure. (this is all explained when I interview and sign new leases with new tenants before occupancy). The fee I charge the vacating tenant is the fee that the cleaning company charges for the cleaning and the tenant gets a copy of this bill.
It appears to me that your landlord did not give enough information about this. If you cannot resolve with satisfaction, I suggest a mediator or attorney, with real estate expertise. Unfortunately, there can be expectations not voiced between landlords and tenants.
I hope this gets worked out.
    tfs.

The Tenancy Deposit Scheme your landlord/landlord agent used will have an arbitration service. If you feel they are being unjust in asking for a huge lump out of your tenancy deposit which having watched the video I think they are, then you should use them if you cannot come to a compromise you are happy with. Re the contract and the ten day clause I would go and see the Citizens Advice Bureau as they will be able to help you without any cost to you and will be able to tell you if what you are being told is correct. If you weren't informed about any changes to your basic contractual rights at the time, then I would think the original stands and they are out of time. Good luck with it all. Love watching your vlogs and it is such a shame that you and James are being taken advantage of in this way.

This was such a sweet heart warming and nurturing video. It felt like a big hug. In the bigger picture there is so much sorrow to be witnessed that, all more frequently, it is easy to be overwhelmed. Taking refuge in the present moment and the beauty surrounding us is really a survival skill! I noticed on social media a new idea cropping up...to counteract the triggers we encounter every day by looking for the 'glimmers' that are also present. The glimmers being all of the positive, magical, and beautiful things of life. Today my glimmers were cuddling with my cats, going for a walk with a friend and drinking a chai tea together at the farmers market. Also finishing painting a Christmas card and, now, watching your video. Thank you so much.

I can't help but notice how superior your art stores are in the UK. They're actually stocked and you even have choices!! Wow! Here in Canada (Vancouver Island, Victoria, B.C. NOT Vancouver), the standards that were already pretty low in our shops, has diminished further since post-covid. Stocks just have never returned and choices are very slim. Even sketchbooks have not returned! It's so pathetic here in Canada (Victoria, B.C.), that we're forced to overpay and wait for months by ordering on-line. I can't help but realize that our small businesses are suffering so badly. Our poor country is falling quickly before our eyes. I see your shops are still nicely stocked over there. Also, I watch a woman in Asia and she recently took us into an art store there and I was blown away at the stock, organization and sheer size of the store. Incredible! We have three art stores here and they are all in such a sorry state that I'm not sure how they're surviving to pay their leases. It's so bad and even Christmas has not spurred them onto fresh stock. I don't live in a large city (Vancouver Island, Victoria, B.C. NOT Vancouver), so maybe that's the reason?! Not sure. I'm very frustrated. I've travelled plenty in England and France to a lot of their small cities and their art supply shops are incredible, everywhere!

It,s sooo unfair...and sooo common that landlords are so horrible money grasping.. They already make so much on the rent,,why do they have to be so unfair???It,s emotionally upsetting because of the injustice more than the money..❤❤

yes, and it also gives other landlords a bad reputation too... sad indeed!

Always love your video’s. Thank you for taking us all on a little shopping trip. We got to enjoy looking at all the pretty items in the festive setting. We all listened to perfect music. Best of all, it was like we were really all together doing a little holiday shopping. Good for the soul and since it was not in person, great for my wallet. So glad your new place is becoming yours. Bring that blanket to the studio next time. Even if you don’t use it all the time, it will add to the coziness of your space. Enjoy your holidays. The peace and quiet of the season can be restorative.

that landlord thing happened to me too, ages ago and it was totally what you said: a theft. I was having so many troubles at the time I didn't have the energy so I let it go. I am proud of you for not doing the same. It teaches the awful person that it might not be easy to run over people and they may remember next tenant and not be so mean. One hopes. Loving your video.
