    I loved this! It was great conversation! Gamblin is made here in Portland, but all I have is a small jar of Gamsol and some printing 'plates' for their labels that were discarded years ago. I would love to try oils again, probably using M. Graham's walnut oil though. I quit oils back in the 80s because turps gave me such terrible headaches.
    I have dug out my copy of Gurney's Color and Light, too! He is such a wonderful explainer of painting!
    I've been watching the bears at Brooks Falls in Alaska this week. It is fascinating to see their fishing methods - and I realized that I've never sketched them before. My results are beginning to look less like dogs and more like the giants they are!
    Have a lovely week!

      @@theunexpectedgypsy That sounds... smells wonderful! I loved all of the smells and was fine painting by myself at home until I took classes in decorative painting - 20 women squeezed into a small area with little ventilation, each with their own jar of open turps was too much. My headaches were severe. I was in an art supply a year or so later when I spied a woman looking at the oils. I made her a deal - sold my wonderful oils for $25. I didn't want the temptation. Sigh. That was back when several women who were famous in that area got very sick. They were finger painting with oils, pointing their brushes after cleaning them and just not being careful. I think it was liver damage. So one of them, JoSonja Jansen, came up with her own acrylic paint and everyone published only with instructions for acrylic. I tried that for a while and quit altogether. About a decade later, I took up watercolors and I love it! I do mess with other things now but I do love the simplicity of water-based media. I do think that once I get my studio straightened out, I just might buy some oils. We will see!

    I loved this video! I'm still not much into painting or drawing, but I would like to get there again. I used to draw and paint a lot when I was a little girl, even though I liked writing much better (I'm an economist with a writer's heard and mind), however many of my happy memories of childhood, of sweet solitude are about me drawing and sinking for hours into coloring. My artsy wishlist is pretty simple, I guess. I would like a travel kit: a small notebook with paper that can take drawing and painting (water color), a traveling brush and watercolor kit and some pencils for drawing.

    I was so shocked about the Windsor & Newton brush, mine are cheaper from Royal & Langnickel/have the Jumbo firm and soft sets, the wood should not move around. Wanted do a shout out as I'm an American, I feel Gamblin is the best, I use their "1980" line & their Cold Wax to varnish my watercolor paintings. (for people never heard of them, the company is from Portland, Oregon) I took an oil painting class via zoom with their brand ambassador and Pete Cole the owner was one of the host, something I'll never forget. Tip: Naples Orange & Naples Yellow are massively praised for their portraiture.

    Please please give up the fallacy that drawing happens in one part of the brain. You need your entire brain, your entire BODY to draw. Try drawing without your hand. Try drawing without your eyes. It's madness to be a chauvinist about this right brain vs left brain stuff. It is just another incarnation of phrenology. It's so alienating.

    • @theunexpectedgypsy
      @theunexpectedgypsy  Год назад +1

      I agree with you and so don't mean to alienate... in that... yes exactly, drawing and all creativity happens in both, but what I'm saying is that we need to access the left brain to really access the 'other' side of creativity! Of course we need our bodies too...

    • @lightbulbnirvana
      @lightbulbnirvana Год назад +1

      @@theunexpectedgypsy I appreciate your reply, Wendy. Are you the expert on how to access the left brain? or the right brain? And how does one do that? It's like saying, "make sure you access your left kidney when you digest salty foods." It doesn't make sense. Furthermore what you are using is an archaic metaphor of the mind as the CPU for humans, that the mind (and thinking) exists only in the skull, and it doesn't. The mind is both corporeal and social and extends beyond time if you consider "inventions" like books and architecture within human history. A bookmark can be a part of thinking. How is a bookmark right or left brained? It is neither.
      There is a term I like called distributed cognition, which has to do with how cognition includes the body and occurs over a broad space of time and place. A bookmark is an example of distributed cognition.
      Artists are individuals who master materials and practices to communicate ideas and political statements, even savoring the color of a flower is a political statement, as I see it. In that way we artists use the scientific method all the time in order to have control of our materials. We are also surveyors of social movements, and usually capture the zeitgeist of the times. Artists inspire thought by creating viewpoints for viewers to step into so as to experience differing points of view, but instead of using words like writers do to create these "mindspaces", artists are using visual and tactile mediums to create these kinds of cognitive spaces. (I like to say cognitive because cognition includes thinking and feeling, but also sensing of the world outside the body.I don't like to make a distinction between thinking and feeling, as I feel they are two sides of the same coin).
      This discussion is really important. If we use faulty metaphors or outdated models of mind, then we are blocked from reaching the best we can do. Consider the model of the flat earth and how that limited thinking.
      Thanks for listening.💌

Lovely texture. Currently, I just this past week made a list of the Gamblin oils I want to get so they are my next splurge...total coincidence that you also chose Gamblin. You will love their odorless Gamsol, so glad I switched to that three years ago, so much better!!! For my ultimate art wish list - save up for an art adventure in Europe!!!! Wendy I love your chair, please let me know where you got this from. I also suffer with my spine and I’m wondering how comfortable your chair is. I’m looking for one at the moment and it would be great to get your feedback, my budget is limited however, a good chair is very important, especially when sitting for long hours!❤❤

    I very much enjoyed the video, seeing all of your new supplies. To answer your question about what is on my wishlist, I have a number of items. Highest on my list though is that I'd like a couple of nice watercolor brushes.

    Amazing video! I love this haul it sure feels as good as Christmas and a Birthday party to get art supplies and art books. I have a long list of art supplies, acrylic paint, I want and I'm determined to get them one day. Recently I purchased some Derwent colored pencils and the Kum long point pencil sharpener you recommended and that's a game changer! 💜

    Ah, I didn’t know that about acrylics being ok to hang like that but not oils (or watercolour tubes either I’m assuming?)…

    Gamvar is the only product that you can put on oil paintings before they are fully cured/dry because it is breathable and the paint won’t crack. Been using it for ages and it is excellent! I used to have to return months later to varnish but not Gamvar…apply right when dry to the touch. Yay for quality fun art supplies!!

    I love the long videos! As for art supplies I would like to get some oil paint as I currently work mainly with watercolour and acrylic. But what I really would love is a beautiful wood flat file cabinet to hold my artwork I'm working on.

    What is on my wishlist right now is to take a few painting classes, oils mostly is my biggest interest. But I've bought oils, acrylics, and some watercolors to get a feel for them. I do feel a need for some basics training to hopefully give me a jumpstart to get going again, maybe with a bit more confidence.

    Never thought of a skin protector before thank you for sharing where did your friend get it from cheers? I love oils for painting but have you any tips for drying them as found that the most difficult? loving those drawing books as learning to sketch. You are a wonderful, talented artist 🎨

    Thank you for bringing up about cool and warm versions of the same colour. I sometimes hear about the warm and cool side of the colour wheel but they always seem to leave that part out and it took me a long time before I realised where I was going wrong with my colour mixing.
    As for art supplies I'm curious about those Derwent water-soluble tinted graphite pencils. Also water soluble graphite and graphite powder.

    I recently bought some new acrylics but have been too busy building out the van. I do have a question every time I've ever tried to paint on top of a previous color no matter how long I've waited in between the new colored destroys the paint underneath. It's only acrylics what am I doing wrong? LOL

    How does being a Lefty affect your artistic side? Do you feel that you are more sensitive in your drawing? I am ambidextrous and there are times I do not know if I am overthinking or too critical in my creativity. This tends to freeze me sometimes.

    So scientific ! As a scientist I would love to read "The secret lives of colour" It sounds so interesting. The visible electromagnetic spectrum and the stories behind it as well as what humans interpret is fascinating. Great choice.

Wendy darling I rub the red tiger balm with a cotton bud till it totally soaks up and disappears on the joint you will only need a little and then wear a fingerless glove on to bed helps. Loved bools too amd swatching ❤ my wish list for art supplies would probably be a storage box like yours 😊
