Incredible documentary.. it was made nearly 50 years ago and its still more interesting and knowledgeable than any modern day documentary.. a timeless movie..
i am living in dubai since 2004 and cruising all over uae, but today a special day that i found this, wonderful, i wish all who reside here must watch this without nationality
As an American (born and raised), I never understood some Americans hostility towards arabs. I found this documentary quite informative. In which you can tell your King was a man of and for his people. And no some selfish person who cared about his personal wealth and riches...Hence being materialistic. I've always found Arabic culture fascinating. Because of how grateful and peaceful your people are. And will only act threatening when only approached with a threat. And that's called self preservation. A natural human response. My only regret is that the west and arab world are clashing. And when this clashing ends. I sincerely hope it brings our two people together and closer. I can definitely understand how others in this world, have such animosity towards America. However, I understand that animosity is towards the American government and not its people. Currently, the American government approval rating (amongst it's people) is 9%-12%. So essentially, most Americans agree with the outside world. Our government should be concentrating on its own borders and people. And stay out of other countries affairs. I find if this was followed. The world would strive to reconcile with America. Which would only benefit all nations on this planet. Thank you for posting such a wonderful documentary. Respectfully submitted, Dr. Rick S.
i am Moroccan born in Australia, i love this city ..the best in the world really. UAE nationals and residents are so nice , very tolerant . congrats Emiratis !
I have taught Social Studies in Dubai, and had to review the history of the UAE. This documentary made it much more "alive" to my students than just the dry facts of history. The video also beautifully illustrates the inspiring role & impact -- and lasting legacy -- of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan. In this, the year that the country celebrates The Year of Zayed, it's good to get such an overview, to appreciate his legacy, and understand why he's so revered.....
This is fabulous. The Sheikh Zayed clips must have been 1966 or so, just after he deposed his brother. His driving a Chrysler up and down the sand dunes while singing is a classic.
I lived in Abu Dhabi 1966-67 but was 3 years old! I have my first memories from that time but the memories of my sister Louise are more relevant... After watching the whole film she asked me to post this on her behalf: "This film took me back into another lifetime - wonderful long ago memories I visited my parents and baby brother in 1967, my father was with BP - I eventually got a job with Albert Abella company (the only importer of fresh flowers for their supermarket) and of course major construction company in those days. -Two flights a week - Walk through airport, tiny building - Flowers were sold before they hit the shelves there were no trees or roads in those days- the first roundabout was built and restaurant was opened before I left- there were 300 British soldiers still at that time- one hotel run by a greek family and construction everywhere, everywhere, with every nationality of architects builders engineers etc etc I used an indian tailor in the souk who ran up a dresses from material also bought in the souk, in a matter of hours! I lived in the "Phillips" apartment building I think so called because of the billboard on roof- I doubt that will still stand today. Thank you for good old memories."
Harold thanks for you comment and conveying Louise's message to us all here. I read your comment a few times just because I really enjoyed reading Louise's experience here when it all started. As I was reading what you wrote I could imagine a black and white film being created in my mind from the words that I was reading. We are an American couple living here for about 3 years with our little daughter. This has been an amazing experience.
Harold Herbert The Greek run hotel was run by Mr Sotiris Radicopoulos and that would have been Al Ain Palace Hotel near the Corniche (father of a schoolmate of mine at Choueifat)
I have been here 5 years and have read a few books on Arabia now ......... I love this documentary, gives you a great sense of Sheikh Zayeds struggle to create a modern Abu Dhabi that will benefit his people, how to spend all this money, what to build first the questions must have been infinite. A great ruler who comes across as firm but fair and who had the vision to create a better world for his people. Well worth spending 52 minutes watching.
A great man visionary leader a real founder of nation, true Nation maker versatile personality, hero and father of nation. Salute you Baba Zayed may Allah bless you rest in peace . Great documentary
Syaikh Zayed is a man of vision and wisdom. may Allah bless his soul in the eternity and may the emirati next generation inherit his vision and wisdom.
I am currently living in abu dhabi .Very close Al Hosn palace that is shown in the video. Must say shaikh zayed was a great man.He made Abu dhabi what it is today.I hope I can also become great imbibing some of his values .Inshallah.
Just an F.Y.I. as I mentioned in my description of the movie above, "Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience. - Mark Twain"
Absolute gem - the documentary has been shot beautifully. Gives such a great view of the 60s way of life, technology and move from traditional to modern society - truly the birth of a nation
Amazing!!!! How visionary was Sheikh Zayed. We wich to have a lider like him. That's why Abu Dabi it is what it is today. A great city. Thanks to Sheik Zayed. God bless this country and it's people
I used to live in Abu Dhabi; it was amazing to see those places as they were and to see the old photos of these people I'd seen a thousand times finally in motion as living beings. Thanks for the share.
I wish we had such a visionary man like Sheikh Zayed in Brazil when we found out the oil here years ago...I like this wonderful footage. God bless all of you. THANK YOU!
matuto2007 It's just a matter of time. Brazil is doing great and would love to see a new visionary come out of the people and take the great nation to the new heights.
This is amazing! Don't you just wish we go back to the same kind of living? I admire Sheikh Zayed for being so humble to his people. All leaders should follow all his ways. :)
An excellent documentary of the lovely country wherein I spent about 20 years from 22nd August 1994 to 18th April 2014- Lonikar. Vice President Corporate Strategy & Performance Management Division GASCO
I agree. I have taught Social Studies in Dubai, and had to review the history of the UAE. This documentary made it much more "alive" to my students than just the dry facts of history. I really enjoyed watching this documentary. Thank you for uploading it for us all to enjoy and learn what your country was like and how it has changed. It seems that Zayed was a very generous man towards his people, and his legacy lives on to this day.
This is an example of a ruler who did not hoard his country's wealth. Rule by democracy is all fine and dandy but not when there's a man like this, its not needed.
Fantastic work Tariq, really commend you for this, having lived in this country for 35 years this actually is great to watch. UAE has come a long way from a fishing hamlet to a modern society full of the tallest, biggest, largest of all that the people wanted. Rulers had an intelligent vision and this is what counted. Hats off to the rulers...
Emiratis are lucky to have Sheikh Zayed, their country's founder, who is a visionary. He was able to balance the old tradition with that of the new modern world which in turn improved the lives of the citizenry as it is now today. It may have taken awhile, but looking at this document of how things were....
great documentary , also what catch more is the way of narrating it's better then many new documentaries , thanks for the upload شكرا على الرفع أخي و جزاك الله خيرا
A fascinating glimpse into the past of the old Arabian desert life. I see and feel the conflict that this strongman had to challenge for the future of his people. Looking back, if His Highness were alive today, I wonder what he would have to say about so-called progress. Thank you for posting this most enjoyable and memorable journey into the past.
thank you to my friend emirati i learned a lot watching the documentary.. i love the people here in uae.. especially my friend who taught me about there culture..
This is a surprisingly well done documentary, especially considering the time in which it was made. There are only one or two minor factual inaccuracies. Baba Zayed was a truly remarkable man with a truly enormous task. His humbleness, pragmatism and piety are apparent both in this documentary and in the legacy he has left in his small, but very important country.
Fascinating! Just returned from Dubai. Incredible place. There is a road built in his name. This road contains more Skycrapers than anywhere else in the world.
Glad you guys enjoyed the documentary and thanks for all the positive comments. I believe that the footage is amazing and it shows how one person's vision for his nation and for the future of the country can impact so many lives in a very positive way. Now for the negative comments that I received I have to say one thing with the help of Mark Twain: "Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience. - Mark Twain"
This is Scottish music from the Scottish highlanders. The Pakistan military was probably trained by the British and got the music from them originally.
May God bless the people Abu Dhabi, The state of Abu Dhabi, and the royal family. I had the best time of my life living there since early 70's very nice country and people indeed. Coptic American.
Молодцы арабы построили страну по среди пустыни вот это я называю настоящие патриоты и сыновья родины просто слов нет молодцы достигли больших успехов.
Few minutes at the end of the documentary was one of the best part when Shk Zayed jokingly removing someones head scarfs and running and playing around with his peoples in desert.. absolutely amazing. He was a king of a desert. Glad to watch it in the YEAR OF ZAYED 2018.
First of all, thank you for uploading this. I've always been intrigued with how the UAE has prospered and developed from just a desert. This shed a lot of light on my questions I had. It seems like Sheikh Zayed was the right person at the right time for this country. It's neat to see how he balanced the old way of life while always looking forward. Thanks again for uploading, and I have a better understanding and appreciation for the UAE. Always fascinated with how well UAE has prospered in an area where there is a lot of controversy.
SlowmanEF you are very welcome. I am happy that you enjoyed this little treasure that I found out in the cyber world. I felt the same exact way when I saw this movie for the first time.
Yes it seems the man had perfect balance and the second generation took it to the next level. As they say a man of the desert must know the value of patience Build with a strong foundation if you want anything to outlast you.
UAE is the best country, thank God and the rulers for making it such a beautiful place to live in! Rest In Peace Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan and Sheikh Rashed Al Maktoum
Much to learn from this video.....shows how ALLAH has blessed this country due to the intention of its people and the KING and their respect and love for others ( nationalities / nation ). May the world learn from it...may people learn from it...... THIS MORAL OF SUCCESS that when success is selflessly in shared peace it add to it multiple blessings.

If Africa has such leaders; I can only dream (we do have few ones just not enough we need more). Ghana also recently discovered oil, we pray God blesses us with a leader such as your first leader. He was a very good man who cared a lot about his people. This documentary is very nice and informative, thanks for sharing.
Thanks very much for giving this informative documentary film..we are travelling passed world while we're watching it..surprised with wonderful changes by Arabs
This is a guess as I'm not a TV expert, but I'd imagine this broadcast was from 1967 or so, because of the Rediffusion London logo at the start. Rediffusion was a British ITV company whose brand disappeared in 1968. To those who know Abu Dhabi: would a date of 1967 seem right for this? Whatever the case, it's a fascinating historical artefact. Thank you for uploading it. :)
I have had the honour of living and working in Abu Dhabi from 1974 to 2012. My heart does very much remain there, and it is my home away from home
i miss abu Dhabi too, m can really understand how you feel.
You saw the big changes happen in AD.
You are welcome here in Abu Dhabi anytime and for as long as you wish my freind.

Very interesting documentary indeed! After so much rapid transformation and an abundance of foreign migrants settling in Abu Dhabi it is good to see that some of the traditional customs have been maintained. Hopefully the younger Emarati generations will be able to sustain such traditions, despite the riches many enjoy today....
Great respect to Sheik Zayid. Syria, Lebanon and Gaza need a leader like him. Get rid of Hamas, Isis and Hizballah and find a leader like Sheik Zayid.
