It is a talent show for PROFESSIONALS. Dimash was invited to China as a wild card.
Dimash is only 22 here, and he has never stopped his vocal training and education. So just imagine how great he is now.
He has increased his range to 7+ octaves. If you would like to see Dimash the musician, no singing, watch "River of Love" in this performance he is playing the Dombra. It is a 2 stringed lute like instrument that is basically the national instrument of Kazakhstan. The music was composed by the gentleman on the keyboard, who is also Dimash's good friend.

Dimash has said that he spent half of his school day at music school when he was a child, and the other half was regular school. He has also said, when really pressed, that he currently practices a minimum of three hours per day practicing, as much as 8, 10, or more, "if the heart wants it." I Am Singer talent show is very different from American Idol. It is not looking for new talents; it showcases outstanding talents in China. It is by invitation only and the contestants are well established artists. Dimash broke viewer records for the tv station with over 600 million views overnight and a loyal fan-base who do all kinds of charities in his name. Pretty amazing how the power of one individual just by being human can bring joy to many people and generate so much generosity, compassion and the desire to give to others in need. Participants in the 'The Singer' competition had a week to learn and arrange the song that has been chosen for them. Dimash didn't speak a word of English at the time and only learned the lyrics phonetically. It was the 3rd song in the competition.
Message from Sveta (Dimash's mum in 2017) re: Brian May "We have received a message that great Brian May, the lead guitarist of the legendary rock band «Queen», gave a feedback after reviewing of Dimash’s performances:

In 2017 Dimash received a wildcard for the “The Singer” competition in China. He was the youngest participant ever (22 years old) and the first non-Chinese. Foreign participants were actually forbidden until then. The director ignored the ban, believing Dimash would only stay 1 or 2 episodes and then go home.
Despite Dimash's planned brief presence, his name was intended to be symbolic and understandable to the public. Dimash was given the Chinese name Dimashi and the 3 syllables were assigned Chinese hydroglyphs: ⭐Di - achievement ⭐Ma - precious stone ⭐Shi - dream, wish.
This competition is not a talent show. Only professional, award-winning singers participate. Nobody knew or heard Dimash before and he had to start first ... and after his first song "SOS" Dimash captured the hearts of over 600 million viewers overnight. The next day, bodyguards stood in front of his door.
The competition consisted of 14 rounds over 4 months. The jury consisted of 500 spectators who knew music, not just your average "Joe". They were well screened to be sure they would be able to judge the musicians fairly and competently. With up to 1 billion people watching this TV program and international interest was aroused. The performances were uploaded to RUclips ... and so we became Dimash's Dears.
The Chinese organizers planned... but Dimash came, sang and stayed ... for the next 3 years in China.

"I'm a Singer" This is not "The Voice", it's a competition of already known and talented singers.Adding that the organizers keep secret the names of the participants - quite famous singers.

She rose to fame in the 1980s as a Cantopop diva before expanding her fan base in Asia considerably by releasing over 30 stylistically diverse albums in Cantonese, Mandarin, English and Japanese.
Amazing, God-given talent plus 20 years of training and tons of practice along with a love of music and a drive to do his best and this is what you get!

I'm a Queen fan, so I delayed listening to Dimash's cover of Queen songs for a while because I was afraid that I would be frustrated. But this performance completely blew me away. I loved everything about it - the arrangement, his singing, his passionate performance. Please continue this journey. My favorite underrated Dimash performance is Autumn Strong from the Singer 2017. It's the Chinese language version of Ikanaide and extremely stripped down for a Dimash song.
The emotion he wrings from it is phenomenal.

I love and APPRECIATE your reaction to Dimash. I want to see your reaction to every single song by Dimash. In 2012, his MV , My Beauty was composed by Dimash and his father wrote the lyrics. He’s still a teenager and the video shows his first band and his first girlfriend ( in the flowered dress). A must see in order to fully appreciate how far he’s came and how much his voice has matured. At last count, his voice range is 7.7 octaves.

I love Queen and Freddies voice but I actually like this version of the song better. Another good cover is his version of Hello by Lionel Ritchie, it blew me away 🥰 Another great performance is is cover of Adagio by Lara Fabian. Absolutely destroys you with his emotive singing.

I personally prefer Queen's original to Dimash's cover of this song, but I definitely like Dimash's version of Lionel Richie's Hello more than the original. You should totally react to that performance next! I would also suggest Samaltau, Sinful Passion, and Drunken Concubine + Diva Dance with Li Yugang, which is a crazy duet

I haven't heard in reactions or read in the comments of Dimash cover songs as it relates to the integrity of the "original" versions. In all those I have watched I am struck by what I believe Dimash, his accompanying musicians and his production team, think about this integrity and what seems to be a real "respect" for the original artist's version. Dimash deserves respect himself for this, as well adding the magic Dimash ingredient. I think he is not trying to "own' the original but for many he manages to do so! How can anyone emulate Freddie Mercury, Lionel Ritchie, Celine Dion et al? Dimash seems to manage it with them all!

You're almost right ... Dimash started tuning his ear to perfect pitch in his mothers womb! (Don't forget both parents are well regarded singers in their country). Then from toddlerhood he was up on stage with them - taking bows {too cute!}. Then, before the age of 5 his family realised he had talent and he commenced his music studies around that age. He says music was around 50% of his curriculum from then. But it would be a mistake to assume that he missed out on broader education. Among his many interests and fitness regimes is martial arts. He also plays many instruments and sings in 15+ languages. Then he studied every aspect of music and every genre - Daily and for the past 20+ years. He also swims - daily if he can - to expand his lung capacity. Now that you've met Dimash, check out Hua Chenyu. Most people start with Nunchucks. He's maybe not *quite* as good as Dimash technically, but is as good if not better in the performance. Many people compare them, but i don't think you can. They're very different. I love both of them equally. In the mean time, enjoy the journey into Dimash's world. I envy you discovering Dimash from the beginning. .
