Dimash has long been a Queen fan. He was 22 years old here in 2017 - soon to turn 28 in May. He had very little English and learnt this song phonetically. He came second in this competition and was invited as a guest singer
Even though he doesn’t speak the language, the first thing he does when he has a new song, is to learn and fully understands the lyrics and the meaning of the song. Adagio is another great example of how he makes you feel the meaning without knowing the lyrics.
PS. A week is a terrible long time when you are waiting for a great reaction 😉
I know, it's a bit of a wait. I put out over 30 videos a month, so it's hard to keep up sometimes editing and all of that on my own. I could tell he understood the song, it's almost like acting in a way. Best if you know what your motivation is.

When Dimash entered the "I am a singer" contest in China 2017, he still couldn't speak English and had to memorize the lyrics. Quite a feat!!! Now he already converses in English and several of his songs are in English (the last Stranger). According to English speakers he has improved a lot and that's what a real artist does: Improve and improve!!!
I'm sure Dimash understood the song well, because he is a Queen fan. He has said that his biggest influences are Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury, Celine Dion, et al

Dimash doesn't speak Turkish. He speaks Kazakh and Russian fluently and English not bad. He also stopped Taekwondo before the red belt exam because of health issues. He will turn 28 yo on May 24.

It's so disheartening when reactors focus on his pronunciation instead of noticing that despite the language barrier, he manages to convey the exact emotions needed. ♥ I swear when it comes to the lyrics "I can fly, my friend' I can't stop the waterworks. I wouldn't like that either. I can speak English, that is it. I have learned the lyrics of a song in Japanese, his pronunciation doesn't matter in the least when I still get the same feelings from the song. I honestly looked at it as potential, that's how good he can do not speaking the language, wow!!
Sorry but I firmly disagree. Dont get me wrong Dimash is above others in his range. However Dimash's version fell short for me. The emotion was lost for me even with the violin. I didnt care for this version at all. I thought it was a very poor rendition.

Authentic and honest his reactions to this version, in fact Bryan May who wrote this song to Freddy when they showed him this video sent a message to Dimash where he told him that it was a wonderful version and that he congratulated him. By the way, one of Dimash's Idols is Freddy Mercury, so he knew in advance the story behind this song and at the time it was composed, that's why he wanted to pay the best tribute to Freddy. This is the version of Olimpico you want- from Dimash’s live concert. There are many versions with subpar audio/visual. His digital show version is awesome as well but his live concert version will give you a sense of how it feels at an actual concert- since you’ve only seen him as a guest on a show. Audio/visually, his vocals.. just insane. It’s in Italian. I’ll leave link in another comment, but in case it gets deleted- search Olimpico (Ogni Pietra) on composer Igor Krutoy’s channel. Participants in the 'The Singer' competition had a week to learn and arrange the song that has been chosen for them. Dimash didn't speak a word of English at the time and only learned the lyrics phonetically. It was the 3rd song in the competition.

I am a huge fan of Japanese singer Gackt, he sings some songs in English, the pronunciation is not perfect, but who cares, it's GACKT!! Am I right? but it's also DIMASH! When you have that much raw emotion in your voice, I would have loved this even if he got every word horribly wrong, cuz he got the song perfectly right. He connected to the song so well it made me a bit sad to know that he understood. AHOY From Canada!!

Friends, you will be surprised, but after this performance there were a lot of comments from fans of the band "Queen", BUT they were all with expressions of gratitude and admiration. And then - congratulations came from the band members!!! And they thanked Dimash and congratulated him on his magnificent performance!!! This was told in one of the reports from the members of Dimash's fan group "Dears".
The Queen Fans would have loved that, the band too. The times Queen Fans get upset is when something like Kayne West doing a cover of Bohemian Rhapsody, and with good reason. Agreed, this song is SO emotional to begin with. Even taking all of the context of the song away, the vocal is already super emotional. One of my favorite songs ever.
When it comes to cover songs, Dimash will almost always choose something that touches him deeply in some way. Another song he did for this competition is called "Autumn Strong." It was his first time to sing in Mandarin, and the story behind the song is extremely touching. No matter how many times I hear it, it brings a tear to the eye. He recently did the same song for the Tokyo Jazz Festival, in which he sings it in it's original language....Japanese. It is the first time he has sung in Japanese. I am sure others have mentioned the Queen medley he did with the Super Vocal Boys....it is absolutely epic, and a must watch.

So glad you guys liked this :)) Some people were offended by him using high notes in this cover. Dimash performed this cover just a few other times in early days after this competition, but he took the high notes out, some say he gave up on using them because he heard it made some people uncomfortable. Or maybe he just left this performance encapsulated in a time and a place. I don`t know. I loved the high notes and him harmonizing with the electric guitar, it was like putting an extra cry into the performance, conveying the story behind the song. Someone said that they stopped the video after the first chorus and couldn`t watch more, and that the little that he watched was "the most horrible thing he had ever heard (done to a Queen song, I guess)". It made me sad, as I know Dimash wasn`t being disrespectful or just "flexing", he even said openly on other occasions that he wishes people to know that his use of high notes is just an instrument to express his feelings and/or the story/message of the song. Even said that he wished people wouldn`t count his octaves so much, that he instead wants to transport people to another world (of the song) for a brief moment, take them away from the daily troubles for a bit. Personally, I almost wouldn`t care if he was "just flexing" if he made it fit the song, just for the magic of seeing his capabilities, but I absolutely love that he proved to be a much more profound person and artist than that, on countless occasions.

I adore Brian May. That is so cool of him, but doesn't surprise me in the least. He is a fantast guy. I love that he put the High Notes, and that he didn't do a carbon copy of the original song.
Dimash is an addiction I’ve been hooked on him since sos and opera 2. I say to people that yes his English wasn’t the best but could you sing a Kazakh song perfectly, nope will be your answer unless your Kazakh, for someone like Dimash who knew very little English I think he did a great job. I think you may need to do 2 a week, he has so many fantastic songs that it’ll take you a lifetime to get through them. Can you please react to opera 2 next then adagio, you definitely won’t be disappointed. Both from the singer show
