Maple is a tree, that grows very fast. most of them, are planted, for that reason. i dont think, that Skateboards ar an invironmental issue. Sure, Skateboards causes a lot of trees to be cut down. but if you build a house or even support elements for construction sites! Cirus skateboards make bamboo skateboards with a carbon core to give the snappy feel. I got one made in a custom shape for me. It is pretty good. Using a combo of different materials and local manufacture would be the best option for environmental protection. As most boards are made in China, with the wood shipped from north america, the carbon footprint on our deck (along with far too much of all our stuff) is huge. The average skater's deck is more well-traveled than the average skater, by a long shot.
I used to work for Bamboo skateboards so I can confirm the decks are made in China. The company is rider owned. Mostly long boarders. But theres a couple actual skaters behind the scenes. The business manager is not a skater but he kept the company alive when the previous manager nearly let it go under. They stopped making fully bamboo short boards for various reasons. Mostly because the feel wasnt right and riders complained. After getting lots of feed back they decided to make hybrid short boards. I think it was a smart decision. They feel more like a solid maple board. They really believe in what they are doing. It's not just a sales pitch. Obviously its questionable whether or not they are decreasing the environmental impact of skateboarding but you cant knock them for trying. As a skateboarder I can say from experience that most skaters are very particular about their setup and not willing to change. So I can understand the reluctance towards bamboo skateboards. Oh and PS, Maple trees take an average of 60 years to mature before they can be harvested. Just saying. Full disclosure: I dont ride bamboo decks anymore. Only because I personally didnt like the deck shapes. But if the shapes were better I would. They are solid decks. And no I'm not a hippie lol But I'm from Canada (Van City) and I got mad love for nature.

There are fast growers that take less than 5 to 10 years to fully mature (with proper watering the first 3 years and care put into them whenever there's a drought), which is the kind that is most often used. Great review. I skated 2 bamboo decks and felt the same about that 'dead' sound. I didn't question the wood / bamboo ratio (so that was cool to consider), but I did question the stats about skating being the number one killer of maple.
Have ridden a few of them, great buy for the price. Speaking of 8.3s, what was your favorite? I'm hunting for a roudned (not pointy) medium to flat concave with medium to mellow kick, under 32"
Ive been using them since 2013 all I can say is they are great! the only downside is that their tail and nose are slightly higher than the usual maple board. So If you have high trucks it takes a while to get used to.
Ben, here in Argentina we use a wood called Guatambu, here in the north its a very common tree, the skateboards factory's use them because the cost its less than a common canadian maple, and its very resist and more flexible but its more heavy than a maple wood. So here in Argentina its normal use boards made with Guatambu wood.
I have 2 decks made out of bamboo and fiberglass (no maple at all) and it has lot of pop, but its mainly due to the fiberglass shit on top and on bottom (and there're only two plys of bamboo). those are made by Rayne (in your country btw) rayne renegade and rayne catalyst they re tech slide oriented board but can be used for cruising and throw ollie shove it and anything. just the bamboo is very flimsy, it can endure lot of torsion and weight but isnt strong when it bangs against pavement or w/e.

You’re one of the few people that actually pay attention to skateboard sizing dimensions and wheelbase. I thought I was alone. I’m one of those that prefer wide boards(8.5) with short wheelbase (14) and length (31.75). They are hard to find. Some skaters can skate anything, i can’t so I’m picky, makes me envious haha. Great content btw.
I got one of thier long boards, picked it up 5yrs ago from a skate shop in san diego. Sadly the shop no longer exists, else I would have went in and asked if they had any info on the company:(
@@saintjimmy223 It's great quality. One of the few symmetric/twin kick decks still out there (they have non twin kicks too). Has a nice rigidity to it but not too rigid. The carbon fiber keeps it nice and solid feeling and it has a nice response to it when kick turning. I can't say too much more from personal experience as I've not been able to push its limits due to recent injury and time away from skating. I'd encourage you to check RUclips video reviews, there aren't a ton, but everyone who reviews it say they love it too. Funny you asked today, because today is the first time in over two months I've been able to skate and I took the Lithe for a spin. Felt amazing. $200 for a deck is steep, but I don't regret buying it.

There's a whole range of tricks that are fairly easy that will prove fun enough to stick with. Aside from that, once you do get into the intermediate flip tricks then age really is of no relevance. It may take longer to learn tricks, but really so what?
I'm pretty new to skateboarding but I bought a bamboo board as a step up from my Big 5 Special. It was quite a bit cheaper than a maple deck so the price was great for a starter board, plus I didn't know anyone else that rode bamboo so it was kind of cool to have something a little different.. I like how how light it is. I feel like it makes it easier for me to learn tricks on until I really get the footwork down. I also found that it's holding up pretty well to razor tail and little to no pressure cracking after about 3 months of regular skating. I wouldn't say its the best board for everything but it's cool to have around for some things and definitely a good price for someone looking for a decent board to get started on.
man I didn't even realize it only had like 2 plies bamboo... you make a good point about where the bamboo is actually grown. a lot of things we do not know about this company, like what type of resin they use to manufacture the boards. some dwindle boards, such as enjoi, has super sap resin which is 30% Biobased Content. a step in the right direction. a bit expensive tho. I find that with long term use of Bamboo Skateboard's boards, that if I touch the razor tail a bit, I get microscopic splinters, maybe from the bamboo. I wonder how a 6:1 ratio of bamboo to maple would work.
Hi Ben! I love your videos and have done a lot of research to pick out my first board, a Real 8.06”, 31.5” length with 14” wheelbase. In this video, did you put the normal Indy 139s on your board? I was curious what you thought of the 14” wheelbase with Indys. I’m leaning towards Indys, but am wondering if the wheelbase would be too short. I’m 5’6”, size 9 shoe, and am aiming for street/tech skating with some park thrown in.

Ive skated 2 bamboo decks before and the pop is great but i hate how long the nose is on these boards maybe if youre like 6'2-6'3 theyre alright but if youre under the 6 ft range theyre really just like skating a small surfboard and they dont make mellow or medium concave decks i know some people like super concave but not everybody does i wish they had better shapes and on top of that how are they more friendly towards the environment if only 2 plys are bamboo if they really were marketing an enviromentally friendly board it would be 6 ply all bamboo not only 2 ply bamboo and the rest maple that doesnt actually do anything for the environment other than make someone feel like theyre doing something when they aren't doing anything because youre product is still mostly made from maple
I think they used use more bamboo but it was too flexy. I think their longboards and cruisers are full bamboo. I agree with you about the kicks. Waaaay too steep.
Excellent review, I think I can make an informed decision now. Only 1/3 bamboo is not what I was hoping for, but to conserve helps if the pop is right lol. Bamboo CAN GROW WELL in the US however, I know folks who planted a little bit and had they whole yards taken over less than 4 yrs later , I mean like acres and half acres of strong bamboo ( hard to cut, hard to remove) turning yard into bamboo farm lol. this chanel has what i always want, since skateboarding is more like a science, i always felt that i need a more technical explaination of what can help on anything, i am myself quite old so thanks to this chanel i understood that i had to find me a board that has the right shape because i skate full strenght for the first 2 hours and after that i get so tired to pop that i have to do everything steazy, so for me the shape of the board and the height of the trucks is super important.
I heard professor schmitt talk about this and he said that the tree farmers are offsetting the harvesting of the trees by of course replanting them and of course they take care of the trees prior to harvesting them.he also said hard maple has a life span that if they weren't harvested then they would eventually die and the resources of the wood would go to waste. so the skateboarding industry is actually good for the great lakes area/Canadian maple trees
Do you know if any companies are making shorter boards at a normal to larger width? I think it would be interesting to ride an 8.25 that was between 28 and 30 inches, but those lengths don't seem to come any larger than a 7.75. I feel like I could go full helicopter with a cute little chub like that
i have one Question. can you overpop an ollie? so the board flies everywere... if it hits the Frontfoot? or is there an other issue. im able to ollie, kinda low "energized"... ollies. but if i try to Pop as hard as i can, the board always turns, about 45-60 degrease. Or it rotates about 60-90 degrease. (Often Primo landings) why is that? i would say, i have the "small" Ollie on Lock... but if i try higher, it always messes up. (thats kinda anoying) I think, that my ankle is not flexy enough... or is that not so important? greetz

I remember skating a bamboo board a while ago when Habitat was doing that. I hated it. It felt soft and seemed to sog out really fast. Now I’m just happy skating boards from companies getting their boards from BBS. I don’t know what BBS does to those boards but they keep their pop for a long time.
Just adding to previous comments, FWIW, just noticed Almost specifically says their maple is from a regrowth program in the Great Lakes region of Canada. I could be presuming too much, but I'd guess most of the companies coming through Dwindle use the same...
Your flip tricks are looking nice and boned out with those steep kicks! I was ghost popping all over the place with them. I think they used to use more bamboo plies but the board was too flexy. I've rode two and one was unforgivably stiff and the other one was pretty bendy. I think I'll stick to American or Canadian made maple boards for now.

I have qustion so i have thunder 147 truck and thunder say it can go to 7.9 to 8.12 but i wanted to try out 8.125 but i dont know if its gonna mess me up because the .5 ? So can i ride an 8.125 on 147 truck? Good vid🙏
Bamboo boards aren't that great. My friend used to ride them all the time and would sell them to others. The biggest complaint was how flexible the decks felt. We took a photo of my friend jumping in the middle of his board and the thing was bent to the ground but didn't break (I think that's in a review he did on RUclips). The nose, tail, and concave seemed exceptionally steep (perhaps they ha e changed this). My other friend actually parked his car on top of his deck overnight to flatten it out. When the board splinters the bamboo will stab you (I've had some gnarly bamboo splinters). Due to the bamboo top ply the pressure cracks look insane. They go from front bolts to the back bolts. We've even accidentally split a deck in half the long way - from nose to tail! Also, supposedly the owner of BambooSk8 (or is it BambooSkate now?) doesn't even skate!!! Obviously support skater owned. Oh, and did you know they've been using fewer and fewer bamboo plies and more maple plies over the years? They used to be 100% bamboo, then added more and more plies of maple over the years. Now they're almost an entirety maple deck. Go figure.
I had a couple decks from habitat that had at least a few layers of bamboo in them way back, maybe it was just me at the time, but I went through them like crazy
I have the same skateboard (nebula w/ ventures). BTW, the nose and tail chips super easy, but they're harder to snap in half. Truth be told, they don't last longer.
I tried one of their boards and wasn't feeling it; they do feel very flexy. I got in touch with the company and can confirm they only have two bamboo plys and are made in China.
Hey I watched this the other day, I came back to tell you some companies make 100% bamboo boards. I would really like to see a review because they are FIVE ply boards.
I want a board made from north American wild plumb tree wood ....I make custom knife handles as a hobby and its the most brutal wood I've dealt with. Its beautiful wood and has a natural purple color at times but making anything over a foot long is almost impossible its full of knots.
Could you do another skatemental review? The last one you uploaded you said, that they also buy from generator but the one i got definitely isnt. Feels more like a china deck but doesnt chip as hard as lets say girl decks.
Ever tried out Comet skateboards? They're the top 10% in B corporations, supposedly, and have been in the industry for quite a while. All maple, by the way.
I have never even heard the B corp thing. I'm also not against using other materials but it should feel as good or better not just soothe the guilt that the marketing just created.
There's a reason skateboard technology has focused more on the peripheral elements of design, (shape/concave/bonding ect.) rather than the actual base material (Canadian/Chinese maple). That's because through all its evolution, the best materials have already been discovered. Further to this, the production setup, from tree to graphic, is such that the cost to the end user has been able to remain consistent throughout the last 20+ years, due in part to a competitive market, and a real appreciation of the craft by board company owners. There's also been a growing trend in the up cycling of spent boards, as a strong, environmentally friendly, and aesthetically pleasing building material. Skateboarding leaves a smaller carbon footprint than hybrid car production, so using guilt as a sales pitch is about as cool as a Prius.
That makes sense skateboards not log cabins not houses (same thing ik) not furniture skate boards bet they really impact the trees good sale pitch though

There's a whole range of tricks that are fairly easy that will prove fun enough to stick with. Aside from that, once you do get into the intermediate flip tricks then age really is of no relevance. It may take longer to learn tricks, but really so what?

I'm pretty new to skateboarding but I bought a bamboo board as a step up from my Big 5 Special. It was quite a bit cheaper than a maple deck so the price was great for a starter board, plus I didn't know anyone else that rode bamboo so it was kind of cool to have something a little different.. I like how how light it is. I feel like it makes it easier for me to learn tricks on until I really get the footwork down. I also found that it's holding up pretty well to razor tail and little to no pressure cracking after about 3 months of regular skating. I wouldn't say its the best board for everything but it's cool to have around for some things and definitely a good price for someone looking for a decent board to get started on.

you make a good point about where the bamboo is actually grown.
a lot of things we do not know about this company,
like what type of resin they use to manufacture the boards.
some dwindle boards, such as enjoi, has super sap resin which is 30% Biobased Content.

I find that with long term use of Bamboo Skateboard's boards, that if I touch the razor tail a bit, I get microscopic splinters, maybe from the bamboo.
I wonder how a 6:1 ratio of bamboo to maple would work.
Hi Ben! I love your videos and have done a lot of research to pick out my first board, a Real 8.06”, 31.5” length with 14” wheelbase.
In this video, did you put the normal Indy 139s on your board? I was curious what you thought of the 14” wheelbase with Indys. I’m leaning towards Indys, but am wondering if the wheelbase would be too short. I’m 5’6”, size 9 shoe, and am aiming for street/tech skating with some park thrown in.

Ive skated 2 bamboo decks before and the pop is great but i hate how long the nose is on these boards maybe if youre like 6'2-6'3 theyre alright but if youre under the 6 ft range theyre really just like skating a small surfboard and they dont make mellow or medium concave decks i know some people like super concave but not everybody does i wish they had better shapes and on top of that how are they more friendly towards the environment if only 2 plys are bamboo if they really were marketing an enviromentally friendly board it would be 6 ply all bamboo not only 2 ply bamboo and the rest maple that doesnt actually do anything for the environment other than make someone feel like theyre doing something when they aren't doing anything because youre product is still mostly made from maple
I think they used use more bamboo but it was too flexy. I think their longboards and cruisers are full bamboo. I agree with you about the kicks. Waaaay too steep.

Excellent review, I think I can make an informed decision now. Only 1/3 bamboo is not what I was hoping for, but to conserve helps if the pop is right lol. Bamboo CAN GROW WELL in the US however, I know folks who planted a little bit and had they whole yards taken over less than 4 yrs later , I mean like acres and half acres of strong bamboo ( hard to cut, hard to remove) turning yard into bamboo farm lol.

this chanel has what i always want, since skateboarding is more like a science, i always felt that i need a more technical explaination of what can help on anything, i am myself quite old so thanks to this chanel i understood that i had to find me a board that has the right shape because i skate full strenght for the first 2 hours and after that i get so tired to pop that i have to do everything steazy, so for me the shape of the board and the height of the trucks is super important.
I heard professor schmitt talk about this and he said that the tree farmers are offsetting the harvesting of the trees by of course replanting them and of course they take care of the trees prior to harvesting them.he also said hard maple has a life span that if they weren't harvested then they would eventually die and the resources of the wood would go to waste. so the skateboarding industry is actually good for the great lakes area/Canadian maple trees

Got a bamboo deck, it cracked vertically, didn't break, but still got those long vertical cracks. BTW, China has maple.

Do you know if any companies are making shorter boards at a normal to larger width? I think it would be interesting to ride an 8.25 that was between 28 and 30 inches, but those lengths don't seem to come any larger than a 7.75. I feel like I could go full helicopter with a cute little chub like that

i have one Question. can you overpop an ollie? so the board flies everywere... if it hits the Frontfoot? or is there an other issue. im able to ollie, kinda low "energized"... ollies. but if i try to Pop as hard as i can, the board always turns, about 45-60 degrease. Or it rotates about 60-90 degrease. (Often Primo landings) why is that? i would say, i have the "small" Ollie on Lock... but if i try higher, it always messes up. (thats kinda anoying) I think, that my ankle is not flexy enough... or is that not so important? greetz
All I can think is you just need to work your way up to bigger ollies a little more incrementally if you can.

I remember skating a bamboo board a while ago when Habitat was doing that. I hated it. It felt soft and seemed to sog out really fast.
Now I’m just happy skating boards from companies getting their boards from BBS. I don’t know what BBS does to those boards but they keep their pop for a long time.
Just adding to previous comments, FWIW, just noticed Almost specifically says their maple is from a regrowth program in the Great Lakes region of Canada. I could be presuming too much, but I'd guess most of the companies coming through Dwindle use the same...
Your flip tricks are looking nice and boned out with those steep kicks! I was ghost popping all over the place with them. I think they used to use more bamboo plies but the board was too flexy. I've rode two and one was unforgivably stiff and the other one was pretty bendy. I think I'll stick to American or Canadian made maple boards for now.

I used to sell and ride these boards. Didn't liked them at the end. They have a strong center but snap earlier from the nose compared to a maple one

I have qustion so i have thunder 147 truck and thunder say it can go to 7.9 to 8.12 but i wanted to try out 8.125 but i dont know if its gonna mess me up because the .5 ? So can i ride an 8.125 on 147 truck? Good vid🙏
Yes you can. 8.12 is the same as 8.125
Bamboo boards aren't that great. My friend used to ride them all the time and would sell them to others. The biggest complaint was how flexible the decks felt. We took a photo of my friend jumping in the middle of his board and the thing was bent to the ground but didn't break (I think that's in a review he did on RUclips). The nose, tail, and concave seemed exceptionally steep (perhaps they ha e changed this). My other friend actually parked his car on top of his deck overnight to flatten it out. When the board splinters the bamboo will stab you (I've had some gnarly bamboo splinters). Due to the bamboo top ply the pressure cracks look insane. They go from front bolts to the back bolts. We've even accidentally split a deck in half the long way - from nose to tail! Also, supposedly the owner of BambooSk8 (or is it BambooSkate now?) doesn't even skate!!! Obviously support skater owned.
Oh, and did you know they've been using fewer and fewer bamboo plies and more maple plies over the years? They used to be 100% bamboo, then added more and more plies of maple over the years. Now they're almost an entirety maple deck. Go figure.

I had a couple decks from habitat that had at least a few layers of bamboo in them way back, maybe it was just me at the time, but I went through them like crazy
I have the same skateboard (nebula w/ ventures). BTW, the nose and tail chips super easy, but they're harder to snap in half. Truth be told, they don't last longer.

I tried one of their boards and wasn't feeling it; they do feel very flexy. I got in touch with the company and can confirm they only have two bamboo plys and are made in China.
Skate XS is the kids bamboo brand. It really is one of the few great mini options. A father son skater owned business & the best to deal with.

Hey I watched this the other day, I came back to tell you some companies make 100% bamboo boards. I would really like to see a review because they are FIVE ply boards.
I want a board made from north American wild plumb tree wood ....I make custom knife handles as a hobby and its the most brutal wood I've dealt with. Its beautiful wood and has a natural purple color at times but making anything over a foot long is almost impossible its full of knots.

Ever tried out Comet skateboards? They're the top 10% in B corporations, supposedly, and have been in the industry for quite a while. All maple, by the way.
I have never even heard the B corp thing. I'm also not against using other materials but it should feel as good or better not just soothe the guilt that the marketing just created.

They tried. And they failed.
There's a reason skateboard technology has focused more on the peripheral elements of design, (shape/concave/bonding ect.) rather than the actual base material (Canadian/Chinese maple). That's because through all its evolution, the best materials have already been discovered. Further to this, the production setup, from tree to graphic, is such that the cost to the end user has been able to remain consistent throughout the last 20+ years, due in part to a competitive market, and a real appreciation of the craft by board company owners. There's also been a growing trend in the up cycling of spent boards, as a strong, environmentally friendly, and aesthetically pleasing building material. Skateboarding leaves a smaller carbon footprint than hybrid car production, so using guilt as a sales pitch is about as cool as a Prius.

I'm surprised at the soft feeling you said compared to maple considering bamboo is way harder than maple. I'm not disagreeing with you because we could all hear on the video how spongey it sounded. I just wonder if a full bamboo board would be the answer? Maybe it'd be too heavy since it's so dense.
Bamboo is not harder or denser than most species of maple.
Everybody keeps saying they’re so long but I’ve skated 8.5-8.88 since 2005 and they have almost always been 32-33 so 31.75 actually seems short to me
