The earhquakes aren't curve balls. The quake meter fills up as you build more mass, so you should build really tidy and no higher than 2 layers in total. Also, you should start by walling the entire playing field, as early in, rain will begin to fall and continue to fill up the water meter if sections of the field aren't walled off. Build one large lake to activate your rainbow multiplier and 3-4 smaller ponds for duckies to appear (which also adds to your score). Reserve one far corner of the field for bombs and immediately repair the hole after one drops with an upper, so you're ready for the next bomb. Finally, learn how the shadows connect to upped land, in order to build neat walls, without holes or bits sticking out. As you might be able to tell; I love this game! :)
Nice review, glad to see so many people have some fond memories of this game. The rainbow multiplier gives you a x10 score - I know this, as that effect and scoring system was thought up by me... Look in the instructions, if you still have them, and my name is there. One thing a lot of people don't know about this game, even Zed two - was that it was almost not released by Ocean, some people took some convincing of this games potential. Also the fact that it sold over 1 million units worldwide even with a very low release number in the US. The highest score you could get on the N64 was 1 billion. There was a little competition for that back in the day. All the best, Steve "Slick"
Lovely review you've put together. I bought this on launch for the N64. Having the Pickfords as developers made it a must buy for me. All these years on and I'm still absolutely useless at it!
I love this game! Bought it at the time of it's release. I've never been all that good at it, but the over-all esthetic, and soundtrack kept me from ever allowing my minor frustrations to become actual anger. Great game for sure.
Going through boxed game systems and came across this. I enjoyed it, even as a kid (and likely moreso now that I'm older), so it was nice to hear that it reviewed well. Thanks for the trip down nostalgia lane!
yeah I had this game back in the day, and I loved it glen. I own a copy of it now and I have improved a lot since I was a kid. it is surprisingly such a great puzzle game
Great review! I picked this game up on Dreamcast after spotting it at a local game store, knowing nothing about it. Funny enough, the manual/cover had water damage, which is usually a dealbreaker for me when it comes to buying retro games, but for this one, it felt appropriate. I agree that this game has a high barrier-to-entry in terms of grasping its mechanics, but once you get it, man is it addicting. This is a game where you constantly feel one step away from your demise, which feeds into the ‘just one more try’ mentality. The presentation goes a long way, too; I absolutely adore the late 90s electronica-inspired visuals and soundtrack. It’d be nice to see Wetrix make its way to a modern console, but at the same time, uncovering obscure/unique experiences like this is part of what makes retro gaming so fun!
I bought this at a Toys "R" Us ages and ages ago... unfortunately, I was there primarily to buy my own copy of Star Wars: Episode I - Racer, and couldn't wait to start playing it. Buying Wetrix was more of a last minute afterthought, because the box art looked intriguing. Since I beat Racer back in 2010, I might revisit Wetrix in the near future and really get to know the game better.
This is funny; my wife and I were playing this just the other night. I (obviously) love this game, and always have since the first time I rented back when it was new. So when I found this game for only a few bucks at a game store about 12 years ago, I picked it up without a second thought. I didn't realize there was a Dreamcast version. I'm going to look that up.
Wow... I'm a huge puzzle fan, and I never heard of this game. Thanx for introducing this game to me. Love the gameplay. I'm definitely getting it!!!!! Thanx
Great review. I spent HOURS on this game when I was younger. Kept borrowing it from the local Choices/Blockbuster. I got good at it, but played it recently and I suck?! Damn it! Haha. Still great fun though :-)
Hey Glenn, how about reviewing Command and Conquer 64! It was a bit strange to have a RTS game on a console back then. Starcraft would be another good bet! Good channel!
Easy game.. earthquakes eventually mess it all up. Make "lakes". Lakes about 2 pieces high are deep enough for ducks. Avoid burning water until the rainbow shows up. Thin out the main border pieces and lake walls with green pieces to help prolong the earthquake. Save a corner for bombs. I'd bring my 64 to the bowling alley near sawgrass mall and play this and OoT. Crowds would form because it was all very new, and the place has a jumbo screen.
@@n64glennplant I agree. The viewing angle no matter how it's toggled is ridiculous, and it's always a fuzzy screen to where judging shadows was guess work! But still, you're crazy awesome for throwing this title in the mix!!!!
I haven't played the N64 one but have played the PC and Dreamcast versions a lot. Your first couple of lines at the beginning of the video summed my experience up perfectly. No matter how much I play it, I can never seem to get "good" at the game. It's still fun though.
the only video ive seen of this game was a review from someone who goes by darklordjadow (or something like that) and he made the game seem like a terrible experience.
Yeah - If this is not the same dev, Aqua Aqua was a complete rip-off of this game, 'cuz it's pretty much literally the same game with prettier water...
i never like new puzzle games. When it comes to games like this i feel like id just rather spend my time getting good at a more popular one like tetris or dr mario instead of trying to build up skill on some game that noone plays. Although i do like puzzle games that you can "beat" as in its not just an endless score getting thing. An example would be troddlers on the snes.
I had the misfortune of being exposed to this game as a young child, even after reading guides I was only able to get points through button mashing and dying in like 30 seconds

That's technically extremely amazing water rendering for that time
Tell me about it!
Thanks to this channel, I found out of N64 games that I never thought existed !
One of my favourite childhood puzzle games along with Tetris and Tetris DS
I picked up a loose cart today. This review helped me decide to get it.

@@n64glennplant and because of you I was up until 1am last night playing this! I managed to get to level three in normal mode.

This is my favorite game of all time. It was also released on the dreamcast.
Really? It’s a good game but of all time?
Definetly my favourite puzzle game
The original wetrix was small enough you could pirate it in a single AOL email. That and irc is where the scenes were at during that time.
Very good point! 😄 those were the days hey
My grandma had a Nintendo 64 and this at her house it always pops in my memory from time to time
Aww sweet memories I bet - unless she used to beat you whilst you played it in which case I’m so sorry 😢
10 minutes into Wetrix and chilll...
+Superwolf1337 haha that needs to be a thing!

I think I'll try Wetrix plus on the Dreamcast again because of this review.
God I loved this. Just spent 15 minutes with a vague memory trying to find it. Great vid
Thank you - it’s a tough game!
I had a demo of this on the PC and played it a lot. Very fun and innovative. Would like to play it again
its crazy how the demo is probably enough for most people!

Does anyone know the name of the company that owns the copyright for Wetrix?
I played alot of Nintendo 64 games but this one game I never herd of. This is the first time I herd of wetrix
I never played a lot of Wetrix but I did find it very interesting, are there no games like this since?
+AJ Spencer
Aqua Aqua on the PS2, exactly the same game, literally.
DtrainDaimyo - Aqua Aqua is subtitled Wetrix 2 in Europe, so it is so similar because it literally IS a sequel.
Picked this up back in the day, mainly because of Ocean publishing it. Huge nostalgia from the 8 bit spectrum days.
Ocean were awesome back then
Need a remaster of this and put in Nintendo switch be awesome !

Aannon thanks, ill get around to reviewing the RTS games on the n64 soon i think :)
Yes please it was one of my most favorite games on the N64 lol. A review would be lovely.
I never got into this, I like simple puzzle games that are easy to learn/hard to master.
what did you think of E3 ?
I did rent this one, and know exactly what you mean by the steep learning curve. Kind of want to hunt it (or the DC version) down now...
Aqua aqua is released on ps2 by 3DO
I just found out about Hatris, now I found out theres a Wetris! Neat.

Wow its Rare i completely dont Understand how a game is funktioning from the Video xD
Haha this is perhaps one of the most unique games on the console, in fact on any console. Thing of it like Tetris with water physics
I think I get worse at this game the more I play it. Not the game’s fault, just me thinking I know what I’m doing and getting tricked.
it was ok i played it but i was young so i sucked at it bad
