    There is and Instant Pot assisted QUICK SOAK. Cover the beans with 3 inches of water bring to pressure for 0 minutes. Let pressure release. This takes about 20-25 minutes total.

      I've had my iPot for 2 years and didn't know that. I've been presoaking the same way I did with my stove-top pressure cooker. Just when I worked so hard to make a fully informative video, I still screwed up.

    You answered a lot of questions in the video, Jill. Thank you for posting. I too have used the old fashioned, stove top pressure cooker when I was raising kids and working full time. Mostly meat because it took so long and in those days we didn't have so much fast food. Can't say I'm any expert on rice and beans but, am learning. Made my second pot of brown rice tonight and am figuring out that the booklet isn't very accurate. No problem tho. Each time is going to be a learning experience.

    I thought my little stove-top pressure cooker was a goner, when I tried to do dried beans raw (no overnight soak).....and the foam blocked the little stem that the weight sits on. I thought the rubber gasket was shot and I wasn't a happy gal. Turns out the pressure cooker works fine, I just won't do dried beans that way, any more. I wanted to see this video for the difference between the IP and my little critter. Am still debating on an iPot purchase, but I learn a lot from your recipes that I can translate to suit my situation. You do rock, lady!!

I appreciate how you explained the process of how the pot has to heat up etc. I do have a question, is 20 mins more or less a standard for beans/lentils/etc.? Once the beans are tender, just mash a few of them up in a separate bowl and dump them back into the beans in the I-Pot. I added the sausage to mine then let them simmer on saute for another 30 mins or so. When they start to cool, that should help thicken your broth into a nice gravy. You can also use the steam function to do this as well. I live in South MS where Red Beans and rice are the main courses! However, the beans are like spaghetti sauce, they taste much better the next day after sitting in the fridge over night. Yum!

    I had my i pot since Christmas, but I was wanting your opinion on the natural release. Do you always let your food naturally release? Is there a benefit of doing the natural release? Are there cons to not letting it release naturally? I normally don't let my food release naturally unless I just forget it's in there. I always just vent it to release right when it's finished cooking. Thanks

    • @stevemayer6185
      @stevemayer6185 8 лет назад

      My understanding is that, due to the slow pressure release, cooking continues longer under natural release. In a case like this recipe, that means the beans get softer. If you like your beans more al dente, perhaps rapid release would be for you.

      Good morning LindaW, I like to pressure cook fresh black eye peas 4-minutes with a 5-minute release. It's been a long time since I cooked dried black-eyed peas; I remember them taking 20-25 minutes with a 10-min release.

      Hi Lynda, Originally Instant Pot labeled the pressure cook button "MANUAL" because they call the whole appliance a pressure cooker. Now they sell it as a "Multi-Cooker" with the saute, steam, yogurt, sterilize, etc. functions. So, what you need to know is every time you read in my cookbook "Press the [MANUAL] button, you press the [PRESSURE COOK] button.

    have you had any experience with the 8 quart IP? I am in the process of deciding which one to buy. thanks:)

    • @JillMcKeever
      @JillMcKeever  7 лет назад

      No I do not have experience with the 8-quart Instant Pot and I'm not ready to graduate up to it. I'll tell you why, too. I've been pressure cooking in 6-quart pots for 20 years. I have water and pressure cooking times memorized. If I bought the 8-quart, I would have to learn a new set of ratios to accommodate that size cooker. Plus, for my family of four, a 6-quart makes plenty of food to cover 2, sometimes, 3 meals for us. I do own two instant pots, sometimes I think of buying a third, but only so that I may cook different foods that require different cooking times. I work my Instant Pots like they are the burners on my stove-top. :D
      I hope I've been some help.

    Just wondering, Why did you soak them when you can cook them from dry on the IP? Got to add, you, Chef AJ and Lindsay Nixon aka the Happy Herbivore convinced me to go IP. My old Tefal pressure cooker worked just fine, almost feel guilty that I jumped ship!

      I'll bet they turn out better. I've tried cooking straight from dry, but am not happy with the results. I haven't tried the quick soak method yet. I suppose I should give it a go.

    Enjoyed video very much and U R SO FUNNY!!! Will be buying recipe book. Question: I went to Amazon I didn't see anything mentioned about free kindle book. Do U have info or will U send me a link please?

      When you buy the print copy, you'll get the Kindle version for free. Just be on the lookout after your purchase, when Amazon shows you the "Thank you for your order" page. On that page, to the right, there will be a mention about the book being available in the Amazon Matchbook program, then you'll see a "Click to buy now" button. Click on the button, Amazon will not charge you. The next page, Amazon will ask which device you want the Kindle version sent to. Select the device and your on your way. Boom! Done.
      Let me thank you now for buying my book! THANK YOU!!!

    Hi Jill, instead of using manual. Why u did not use the bean/ chilli mode?

    • @JillMcKeever
      @JillMcKeever  3 года назад

      Six one way, half dozen the other. With Manual, the iPot remembers the last time setting, which is typically 50 minutes for me. If I used the Bean function, I'd have to press the "+" button to increase the cook time from 30 minutes t 50. Then I'd probably go past 50 and have to press the minus button to take it back down, then go past it again by a couple of minutes, back to the plus button to get it right. 🤣😂.
      Just keeping it real and honest.

    I'm too impatient to wait overnight for bean gravy so when I remove the Instant pot lid, I just mash a few of the beans, remove a little excess liquid and turn the pot on high and stir until it boils. Voila! Gravy in less than 3 minutes. :)

    Hello. I have an electric Pressure Cooker. I cooked my beans and rice together. I have an Elite 10qt. I cooked 3c of pinto beans to 3 c of brown rice. I used 18 cups of water and cooked it for 32 minutes. My cookbook says 22 minutes for the rice, and offers no cooking length for the pinto beans. I looked on Google, and applied 3 cups of water per 1 cup of beans, and 2 cups water per 1cup rice. I calculated 15 c water total. I know something in the pot is going to overcook, probrably the rice. I made sure I added at least 4 tbsp of olive oil, and 6 boullion cubes. Do you think its going to turn out right? It cooks at 12 psi.

      The pinto beans, if they were dry, will not be cooked tender. Dry pinto beans need 50 minutes of pressure cooking on high pressure. Brown rice only needs 22 minutes. Even if you tried cooking soaked beans and rice together, it would not work out. Soaked beans need 30 minutes of high pressure cooking. The rice, not matter the color, would be overcooked. Beans need extra water to cook properly and to a tender bite. How long have you had your pressure cooker?

    I bought your cookbook. Your recipe for bbq cabbage only talks about saute function but not any pressure cooking. Am I missing something?

    • @JillMcKeever
      @JillMcKeever  4 года назад

      No, the iPot is a cook pot AND a pressure cooker. The cabbage only needs pan frying with a little bbq sauce to be made into a meal.

      Hi VitaZgal! Thank you for buying my book. Go to Kindle Matchbook, log in with your Amazon password. Amazon lists all the Kindle versions of the book you've purchased. When you click on "Get the Kindle Version" it should download automatically for free. I've been told my other fans that Amazon remembered they had purchased the print copy. Let me know that it worked for you as well.

      Amazon site was having problems...55 mins on phone & I finally got it downloaded...Hooray! Hope no one else will hesitate to get the Kindle...I did have to insist that the Kindle came free as initially it did not register as such with the purchase or on Amazon's end by phone. All is well...should be easy for everyone now... ~Cheers~

    Instant pot and other pressure cookers are supposed to save you time. I’ve been pressure cooking for over forty years. You do not have to soak your beans. Make sure you add enough water to your beans about two inches of water. Your beans can be cooked for 45 minutes without boiling the water first. Once the pot stops, let the steam come down naturally. If you want a creamy bean then mash some of the beans and it will give you the creamy broth. You don’t lose much water when pressure cooking.

      Soaking the beans has an added bonus of minimizing the bloating you get when you eat them :).

    How long would I cook the beans if I’ve soaked them overnight?

    • @dkyelak
      @dkyelak 4 года назад

      Seems like 20 minutes from what I can tell for pre soaked- I had the same question. I think she said if you pre soak that there should be an inch over the beans. I made a smoked turkey broth with meat ahead of time while beans are soaking, I plan to use the turkey and stock as the liquid this weekend. Lastly I will dump in some left over wild rice I made a couple days ago just because!

    How do you know that the water is boiling if you can't see inside or open the lid? I went by sound but that doesn't mean it was at a full boil. Help?!?

    • @JillMcKeever

      I don't worry whether the water is boiling or not. The electric pressure cooker is doing the cooking, so I can go do other chores.
