- The Kubota L2501F is a bit different from some other commonly-used utility tractors in that it has two-wheel drive and a gear-driven transmission. This is a significantly large tractor for the price point. Neil checks out the unit and considers some aspects it lacks in order to drive that price point so low. I love the simple look of a 2WD tractor. They have a bit of nostalgia to them and definitely have their place.
No carburetor. Computer not manual.

Growing up in the midwest on a small farm, we never had 4wd, and I can’t recall a single time we got a tractor stuck. I think a lot of people could get by with 2wd and save a ton of money upfront and on future maintenance.
Oh yeah, I recognize the capability of 4wd for sure. We lived in hilly terrain but I suppose maybe we just didn’t use it if it was wet? I don’t recall that specifically, but I do recall going through a muddy creek bottom on a regular basis back in the woods.
I have a 2WD Kubota L2501F with no loader for running a pull type snowblower up my hilly driveway. With studded diamond pattern chains it goes through anything. I paid $11,400 brand new a little over a year ago. These tractors are probably the best deal going if you don't need 4WD.
I love the gear drive transmision.Simpler and cheaper

2wd tractors are great for making hay. It’s just difficult to find them.
A properly weighted two wheel drive tractor can still pull a decent load. Grew up running a two wheel drive tractor on our family farm, pulling 14 foot offset discs and chisel plows with a IH 806 and or a Case 1070, all day long!
I still know many guys that still run 2wd tractors such as the old Farmall H & M's. And they use them for plowing snow (chains on the rear), raking hay hauling bale wagons etc and they do the job. When I lived on a dairy farm, we had 4 tractors, only one was 4wd, and it was the 3rd biggest of the 4.

I would have thought since almost all the traditional tractors had live pto when 4 wheel drive became the standard, this model would have still have it.
Also keeping the under 25 hp for epa reasons is so important for long term repair

The heavier tractor with low hp is better as half the time you are going to Buy weights on wheels or front suitcases anyway!
My first tractor was a 40 HP 2WD and never, ever got the feeling that I needed 4WD in over 30 years of use. It was a beast and almost indestructible! Didn't have a FEL as most of my work was spraying peach trees and bush hogging. Bought it with less than 300 hours and sold it with over 5000 hours.
Darn, no live PTO would be a deal killer.
I grew up using a 51 Ford 9n, I took that thing through a lot of mud and got a lot of work done. Honestly I think 4wd is overrated, with a ag tire on the back and knowing how to brake turn and using the tractor you can get a 2wd through almost anything, but I do see applications where 4wd is useful. Great videos keep it up! Glad to see there’s still a market for 2wd tractors.

What is funny us growing up on a farm in Kansas, the only 4wd tractor we had was a Case 4890 and a Kubota B7100. All of the general tractors were 2wd. Now it seems most of the tractor are being sold with front wheel assist.
I like these demonstrations. I have bought may highway vehicles and fell like I am knowledgeable about them. When I bought my CUT I really did not know enough.
When I was in high school, I worked for a local farmer. He had mostly hay fields, but he also had about 50 acres in sweet corn. He used what was, even then, a old 1960's vintage Ford tractor. Plowing and discing the sweet corn fields, 4-wheel drive might have been a nice upgrade. But, for virtually everything else, that 2-wheel drive Ford with a 15 speed gear-driven transmission (5 speeds in 3 ranges) did everything he needed and did it well. With 4-wheel drive, he might have been able to pull wider ground engaging implements, but it only took him a couple of days over the course of a couple of weeks each spring to prepare the corn fields for planting. Why incur the greater expense and higher maintenance costs for that?

I grew up using the Fords as well and the best thing was they had live PTO. I could never understand the tractors that shut off the PTO when pushing the clutch, seems would be the death of a lot of implements, Say clutching to slow for a big wad of hay when baling or in winter slowing for a big pile of snow, both of these would not end well if the PTO stopped when clutch was pushed. None of the tractors back then had 4 wheel drive.
Dad used to tell me that you get into less trouble with 2WD because you don’t take chances. He also said you use 4wD to get out of trouble, not in it. 😌
@@LedgemereHeritageFarm There is some truth to what your father said. We should also acknowledge a 4WD tractor can simply do more work -- of certain types of work -- than can a 2WD tractor. A 4WD tractor can pull a larger gang of plows than can a 2WD. It can also do more work with a box blade or a loader bucket. That has nothing to do with 'taking chances' or driving your tractor where you shouldn't. If I'm pushing snow with a front-mounted blade, I'm going to want 4WD!
However, as Neil said in the video, that doesn't mean 4WD is always superior to 2WD. Let's say you're mucking out stalls with a front-end loader. The greater maneuverability of 2WD may make a 2WD tractor a better option.
For the farmer I worked for, I think a 2WD tractor might still be the better option. He hardly ever used ground-engaging implements or did other kinds of work where the superior traction of 4WD provides a benefit. The additional expense of 4WD wouldn't be justified by the usable benefits from 4WD.
Bottom line: It's nice to know that 2WD tractors are still available for situations where that's the better option.
@@DKWalser yes. My brother’s 4455 JD pulls a chopper in wet Fall much better than his 2WD 4320. Like you said, there’s a place for both.
We bought our 2501 4x4 hst to help the 7060 with farm chores like raking the arenas, parking lot grading and light work but it has proven it’s worth past my expectations as it’s my go to for brush hogging especially around the pond. I also use it to pull a 17’ Tedder and pull the loaded wagons back to the barn!
A skilled operator can use those dual breaks to get unstuck in a tight spot. 4x4 is usually not needed. That’s a very good set up that most people will probably over look
even if get stuck, easy to get unstuck know what to do all on its own
Great info, Neil! We did fine with 2WD and manual transmission for decades with our old Ford 8N, and the Cockshutt 540. They really did all we needed to take care of a field (hay, mowing, etc.) and horses. - Chad

2wd is fine for utility work, especially if it has rear differential lock.

That was a great video on 2wd tractors. That is a lot of tractor for the money, impressed with it. Thanks for bring up about the turning radius, that is why we first bought our little 2wd tractor, was because it is used for mowing and the difference in turning radius between the 2wd and 4wd model was huge. And like you said, on level ground, (in a yard say) you can do loader work all day long. It is when we took our 2wd tractor to an off grid property with hills where we saw the need for 4wd. Even saying that, we were impressed with what it could do, just wished we could have done more. Thanks for the video!

I have one of the 80ish model L235 2 wheel drive that I use on bush hog duty as well as driveway work along with yard work, I would not take a million bucks for it for the fact it is extremely handy for what I do. The 2 wheel drives have their advantages as well disadvantages but like you said, it’s all in what it’s used for and what you need.
I have a 2wd L2501. I could have used 4wd maybe twice. It mostly does road maintenance on a small private road. It does fine on loader work. Does great removing snow and grading the road.
One other nice point is the maintenance of the tractor. Trans fluid has a longer life than a hydro and no fluid change on a front axle.
I bought L2501F 2WD as well for the same reasons as you. I have a small private road and a hilly driveway to maintain in the winter. I run a 68" pull type snowblower, it works really well. I put studded chains on the rear and it goes through anything.
I have a 4WD 2501. It is a realy good tractor. Power steering AND breaks? Who knew how good a tractor could be after years of old Oliver 70s and Farmall all As and 8ns and so on. Best thing I ever bought.
A modern day version of the Ford 8n. They used to farm with tractors like this everywhere.
Great looking machine for the price pity the pto isn't live ,it just seems to have been such an important developement on tractors in the late 50s that it should be there in 2022
it would be a perfect tractor for pushing feed up on a large dairy farm. In Europe they use these size tractors as scraper tractors too

I think every dairy or livestock farm I've ever worked on had at least one tractor like this. It was the daily driver chore tractor. And doubled as the hay mowing and raking tractor, too. Most had several utility type units- it saved on having to swap impliments as often. None of the bells or whistles needed, just a reliable tractor with the power, grunt, and agility to get stuff done. And they burned less fuel than the larger row crop models.
A wonderful tractor I have a l2501 4x4 gear drive and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a 2 wheel drive for certain tasks very 8n like but better
Good informative video
A gear tractor will put a higher percentage of engine horsepower to the ground. Significantly higher. If you were to pull a heavy drawbar load all day, such as a plow, this 2wd L2501, if ballasted properly, would out work the same tractor with hydro and 4wd. The hydro absorbs some power, even with pto work. The gear drive is 20.5 pto hp, and the hydro is 19.0. The drawbar horsepower difference would be even more.
I could have gotten by with a 2WD for the mowing and baling, but after looking around the place, found so many other uses for a larger 4WD for things the B2410 is just too small to tackle. If it was just to mow, rake, and bale, a 2WD would have been perfect. Still waiting on the LA805 to be delivered though, someday I will have my new tractor, but until then.....
Should mention other applications where I have seen something like this in use is in marinas to move the smaller boats around the lot
Bought a new Holland workmaster 55 2wd last year. I looked and looked and the moment I saw that tractor and told the dealer to put it on hold until I get back from work and the bank.
A lot of hay operations in the area I live in is done with old Ford N-series tractors, no 4WD needed...a friend of mine uses an old tricycle style John Deere tractor to pull his hay rake, his baler is self powered so no PTO required on it, but they have actually ran their other PTO powered baler behind their Mahindra 24HP tractor and it seemed to work fine, they don't do that often but was interesting to know it had enough power to run that baler.
Definitely a lot of applications where that 2WD L series would be a great fit for many. I just have a BX2680, but with it, if it wasn't 4WD it would be quite useless in several applications just purely due to the lack of weight....trade off's are one thing you gotta think about when buying a tractor too. Weight is one of them. For me I have to drive around my yard a lot with my tractor so I knew I needed something light weight, I don't have much room to park the thing, so I knew size was a factor...the BX does everything I need it to do, and been quite surprised at its capability....one of your videos showed people doing some pretty insane stuff with their BX tractors...I can say that the stuff shown in that video isn't a lie...these sub-compacts can do a lot...and in very tight spaces where you can't get a big tractor into. That L-series doesn't look all that large, but for the market its designed for it'll certainly do whatever the buyer needs it for. I can see them being used in orchards where they're just mowing or doing other tasks where 4WD typically isn't needed at all.
It's similar to the evolution of the pickup...
Today's minimum model approaches 1970's luxury car interior, but in the 1970's you could find a pickup on the lot with the minimum to get the job done.
Possibly 30% of the stuff just doesn't need to be there for a work truck. But you can't find one without it.
You're going to see the tractors do much the same. stuff that isn't really needed is becoming standard equipment.
That L2501 is pretty much equipped like you'd expect for the average tractor that size from the 1950s to 1970s. Thousands of farmers got their work done using that level tractor for a very long time and many of those tractors are still working.

Any reasonably competent mechanic can work on the old tractors.

On my dad's farm and mine we have owned a four wheel drive tractor. Maybe one day we will. I really like the looks and functionality of this tractor.
Is it hilly on your farm? If so don’t get a 2wd tractor.
@@kdegraa there are some hills but we use our olver oc6 crawler on them. We like our classic tractors here in West central Pennsylvania.
4wd is bought by many who don’t need it. I went the other way and got bigger tractor with 2wd. Glad I found mine before the VID hit. Mine is 2wd, gear drive MX5200 with loader. Got it for 14k with 90 hours.
Was looking for 2wd and gear as I can’t stand constant whine of the HST. I’m on flat land though and it was hilly, I would’ve gone for 4x4.
I have both 4WD and 2WD tractors. When 4WD isn’t needed I really dislike a 4WD tractor. Hay field especially. Nothing spins around and maneuvers like a 2WD on dry ground. And the 2WD has far better traction than a 4WD running in 2WD. But then winter comes and it’s all different story!
No 4WD in 2022. But no live PTO?!! Can’t picture that one.
It's cool, however after using my tractor a lot, 4WD is crucial...it makes a significant difference in traction with loader/ground engagement work and just moving around when it's wet. Sometimes locking rear diff is adequate, but more often than not, it's not enough. I got R4 tires and honestly thinking maybe ag tires were the way to go...the R4's turn into slicks in mud. 4WD somewhat overcomes R4 downsides, but in mud, 2WD with ag tires (and no 4WD) might be better. However, when doing heavy loader work, on rough terrain, or on the road, the R4's are nice (no flex/bounce, heavy duty tank-like, and smooth/balanced going fast on highway). This 2WD tractor with ag tires might do very well in muddy farm conditions compared to 4WD + R4. In summary, 4WD + Ag tires if you want the best traction, though that comes with downsides too. Side point is these emission systems are great...ingesting diesel particulate fumes is really bad on your lungs over long-term... health is priceless so don't go saving money on that.
Im more surprised at the lack of a live PTO than I am at 2wd and gear driven in 2022….
I had an L2501 DT. It was a bulletproof, no frills tractor, no loader and ideal for field work. The only reason I ultimately sold it was because I needed Live/independent PTO which this did not. Otherwise, probably the best tractor I’ve ever owned. I had loaded tires and primarily ran it in 2WD.l planted, cultivated corn, graded, drilled post holes and even ran a bush hog just fine. The problem was when I started tilling and snow blowing
The weight balance is perfect as well. With the R1 tires you can run the whole gambit of wheel widths. For general purpose agriculture, R1 tires have always been my #1 choice. The biggest advantage of R4 to me is the thick sidewalls that really don’t squat down much under load. I learned from my father that often times, less is more in that the more gadgets, the bigger the chance of something breaking. I’m a big fan of Plain Jane. Thanks Neil😊

@@MessicksEquip until the 1970s everyone made do with 2wd. The biggest problem with 2wd on little tractors occurs when you add a loader. It’s almost impossible to add enough ballast to make the loader operate efficiently. The lumberyard you mentioned, and a tree nursery are perfect exceptions.

Even when wheel loaders were 2wd (those weird backwards tractor..things..) they had the drive wheels on the same end that the implement was loading down. RWD with a 3pt or FWD with an FEL would be fine, but if you want to have 3pt and loader on the same tractor and try to keep it tidy/small, 4wd is basically completely necessary.
If you want to have a laugh, imagine how useful the common skid steer wheel loader would be if it were rear wheel drive only.
L2501 HST owner here. Glad to see this option is available, but down the line +HST and +4wd will likely directly reflect in the resale value of this unit for 30+ yrs into the future. Let alone the value of having those features for all the years you own it.
Yes, but you’re still paying extra up front, so proportionately, that may be false. The caveat is the addition of a loader. A tractor without one is a hard sell. A more fully featured tractor may be more desirable and sell faster than a no frills machine. You never really know
People who are going to buy this tractor generally don't care about resale. caring about resale is generally only something you hear about from weekend warriors.
@@bigd9260 you are exactly right. I bought this same exact tractor less than 2 years ago for $11.4K cash. The last thing I want to do is sell it. It runs fantastic and does everything I need it to do. If it ever needs work down the road it's such a simple machine that I can do most of the repairs myself. It's basically a modern day 8N and look how many of those are still being used.
This is gonna be a good lineup Tractor For kubota. My 2 wheel drive ford does everything I've asked it to do. I have a 4 wheel drive 2501 with the manual transmission And love it.. I did not want an HST transmission and glad I got the manual. The HST transmission make a whining sound, That gets old listening to it. Every tractor I've ever operated had a stick shift So it was just natural To get a 2501 with a manual stick. A 2 wheel drive tractor definitely has it's place.
1 thing I would definitely recommend is getting agricultural tires as they have a lot better traction than what comes with this tractor
Why not? Most of us Midwest dairy farmers grew up with 2wd units. Got by just fine. Know your equipment and know your limits.
Another place for a cheaper spec 2wd tractor, like doing stationary pto work, running a auger, or a generator or municipal mowing
When u get right down to it , If you have a fair amount of land a money is not a major concern , One tractor is not enough anyway
Nothing like having a Brush hog hooked up one one machine that is always ready and the other with the Fel and a box blade also forget the BH attachment and have a 10 Thousand pound mini excavator . Now we’re talking.
My l3200 is four wheel drive, once I added the bh77 backhoe, i stopped using 4wheel drive. Plenty of weight on the rear axle with the r1 tires

I completely understand you about pricing and dates as I watch a lot of older videos and see a lot of older prices. it's like finding a month-old local store flyer and mistaking it for the current sale price. but I also think you as a dealer shouldn't have to worry and be able to post your price as you try to possibly make sales..... maybe on the videos, you say prices put a date stamp on the screen so its obvious the price you are talking about is only good around that date. I am not sure if that would help but it's an idea I've wondered about for a while.
yeah, but it's an opportunity for people to be disappointed - and say "6 months ago the price was X", whereas if they never knew, then when you tell them the price they may be pleasantly surprised.
Yesterday late afternoon I was plowing snow with my shiny B2601 and saw an ancient tractor coming down our subdivision road at me. It was a JD that looked like 1930s vintage, with a thin old rear blade. Geezer at the wheel looked like he was out of the 1930s too. Huge rear wheels. He proceeded to blade snow off a neighbor's long drive I'd just plowed. The rig really worked. I was using my blade for the second time, so cut myself some slack. But had to admit he may have had the superior rig for our 8" snowfall. His tractor wouldn't fit my main use, however-FEL work. So there was some comfort in that!

I own a Kubota BX2380 Subcompact but still use my Sears Garden Tractor with manual transmission frequently, hydro gets boring after 100s of hours.
Strictly AG, farming, only need to plow, rake and bail hay, etc no need for 4WD or feature rich stuff. unless in an area wet and boggy, or do a lot of moving stuff also then bucket can be handy. I am still on the fence gear vs HST as found before more complicated and more expensive to repair as only thing to service on gear trans is clutch but then not often at all.

Great idea. I always think that an L2501 is the modern day replacement for an old Ferguson - Dad has an Massey TEA20 (not sure you ever got those in the USA), it's a 23HP 2wd with a 1.9L gas engine. A 1.3L diesel feels about the same I think.

If you are running an implement like a Bush hog type mower and push in the clutch will the mower push the tractor forward through the pto? Like it would on my farmall H
if you use a front end loader with a two wheel drive tractor and you load the loader with dirt you end up with a no wheel drive tractor been there done that

Decent wee tractor for the money
A two wheel drive tractor definitely can turn shorter especially with differential braking. For tillage and loader work you really should not need four wheel drive. I think one big problem with all the L series tractors is that there is not enough weight on the rear tires. The maximum package of three wheel weights is not enough because the wheel weights are too small. Maybe you can add fluid to the rear tires if you have someone in your area that does it, but then you have to worry about what kind of fluid they use, and will it corrode your rims.
I plowed my garden with my new L4701DT and an old two bottom Massey Ferguson mounted plow. Even though I have the maximum wheel weight option and ag tires, it did not have enough traction to pull it in two wheel drive. I had to plow in four wheel drive. I grew up farming with a three bottom plow on 1955 vintage Allis Chalmers WD45 tractor. With only 32 HP it pulled the three bottom plow easily. The difference was much more weight on the rear tires. One wheel weight on the WD45 was heavier than the three Kubota wheel weights combined, and as I recall we had two on each wheel. In addition the chassis was built heavier.
I never knew that the L 2501 came in a 2 Wheel Dr. Not that I would want one my main objective was four-wheel-drive on my Kabota l2501
It blows my mind that this tractor is priced less than my 1988 Kubota L2850DT which is very similar in size but 4wd and 34Hp it was about 16 grand new.
I love 2wd tractors. If I ever replace my FWA tractor, it will be a 2wd gear tractor.
I farm in eastern NC. Two wheel drive 50 hp. Tractor work better for me because they will turn around a lot closer. Have a good day.
Half way though the video thinking to my self. They better put the biggest engine they can fit on that frame. All that matters is getting the most HP to the PTO.

A 2wd tractor is find for light jobs where you need a second machine
Growing up in a green tractor dealership and being a Kubota B owner for 4 years and knowing the amount of HP a hydro trans takes I would never own one.Not to mention the life expectancy and repair cost of a hydro.
Exactly there "might be" 5 hydrostatic compact tractors vidios out there in the WORLD with more than 1200hrs Out There! As A majority "hover around" 85 hours of "My Tractor is GREAT Vidio". I know of ONE with 1300hrs in 5years and it's not a Kubota. A friend of mine with 1400hrs (A Kubota B26) 6 years old & over 5000.oo$ of repairs is "still" running OK but is his now his spare (it is "hammered, but looks good). For his " investment " of 33,000.oo it tripled it"s value as a Tool ( He's been Lucky). My " kubogy" @ 5years and 850hrs is still running great (still a baby) & IT'S Gear Drive. Let's just keep grinding & hear them "Hydro's -howling".
The one thing you did not talk about is resale if you buy a tractor and spend a few grand on options that fit the needs of others you can enjoy them while you own the unit and in the case of things like 4wd and the loader you should get most if not all of your money back better yet you will find your self using it in places that you did not think you would so my advise is to load them up
Buy having lots of different models on the same assembly line you drive up the cost of all of the tractors.
manual transmission tractors w/clutch pto's have more power directly to the pto as there's virtually no loss of power through the transmission. also, an overrunning adapter on the pto will help keep spinning equipment "spinning" between gear shifts, without them mowers and such can push the tractor forward (on non-dual stage clutch models) between gear shifts due to the mower acting as a flywheel. hey Neil, are you sure that doesn't have a dual stage clutch? my dads L2501 w/manual transmission has a dual stage clutch. he did order it as a 4wd model as he has hilly property, but wanted a manual transmission as he is running a chipper off the pto and it spends a lot of time in one place just running the chipper.
Most newer tractors without live pto, including this Kubota, have a built-in over running clutch for safety.
I’m planning on pulling a two wheel drive m9000 Kubota in a 6000lb farm stock but would a two wheel drive m108s be better to use
So would the L2501F suffer from the same hazard as an old Ford 8N in that if you are brushing hogging and push in the clutch the momentum of the spinning brush hog will continue to push the tractor forward? A lot of fences have been taking out by old tractors with this "feature". :-)
No, has an overrunning clutch to prevent that.
Hi Neal, i was thinking gear drive V's Hydrostat , if you cut a Hydraulic hose in the field , can you still drive home ? or will you loose all your fluid and be stuck there ?
if you cut a hose and lost the fluid in a gear drive, you'd have no lubrication in your transmission. Stuck either way.
Can you talk about New Holland 2wd models? I've been running Ford and Oliver equipment primarily throughout my life, primarily older machines due to the cost of getting into new equipment being so high and margins being slim. I would prefer a front wheel assist for feeding and chores, but for making hay, light tillage, etc that I have a 2wd is VERY sufficient for my needs.

I’ve seen several broken or bent front axles because someone abused their 2wd tractor with a front loader. I shy away from them if I don’t know their history.

What is the smallest two wheel tractor you can bye with a loader I have yard tractor and built front loader but like something bigger with more lift of say 250 pounds can you tell me think you love what your doing
probably a Simplicity Legacy. Though, I think they may have discontinued that. 2WD is not very desirable. I'd look at a Kubota BX1880.
Not to mention, 2wd tractors have fewer moving parts to break down on you!
I got really disappointed at Kubota over the transmission PTO. Everyone else went away from that and had at least a two-stage clutch in the early ´60s. Kubota went a little overboard in their attempt to make a value package here, so much as to remove most of the value of the package. I don't mind 2wd and I don't mind gear drive, even if you have to clutch at shifts, but a straight transmission PTO with a single-stage clutch is bordering on medieval.
Only this tractor is done this way, if you want to avoid it the next step up has a two-stage clutch. I can go both ways on this one, it is awfully old school, but it's good to have a value priced option too.
A compact tractor without four-wheel drive just ruins the whole thing for me. Got to have that four-wheel drive

No mid mower on this series. Frankly, its too large for that. You can always put one on the 3pt.

no.
If my land wasn’t as hilly as it is, that would suit my needs very well… but… as is my tractors (L4701 & BX2680) are never out of 4x4, and often I even need short applications of diff lock.
Agreed, I have some steep hills and wouldn't dare to try them with 2wd tractor...no way.

You mention this model is quieter than others because it makes peak power around 2600 rpm. I have a 70 year old Farmall that makes about the same horsepower but at 1600 rpm. It puts out much higher torque to get that hp at the lower rpm while being much quieter and being gas. Do any new tractors today offer a gas option? I would rather have a gas powered low rpm engine design instead of the diesel in my modern 26 hp compact tractor.

Fortunately in Australia the State did not decide farm tractors powered by engines that are putting out more power than 25HP are destroying the atmosphere through the emissions they put out. Thus tractors here generally do not have DPF filters and funny looking expensive cans under the hood.
