    Growing up Italian-American, my grandpa used to feed me a Sicilian lunch dish with whole salted sardines, raw onion, red wine vinegar, and olive oil on homemade bread. You’d eat it like bruschetta. It was absolutely delicious, I fell in love with it. I’ve loved sardines ever since I was young. As a guilty pleasure I eat them straight from the can sometimes. They are not only delicious and healthy, but dynamic in what ways you can prepare them. Definitely a tremendously underrated food item that’s dear to my heart.

      Straight from the can! So I'm not the only one. Super healthy. 22g of protein (?!) for single 4.4oz serving. Lots of potassium, too. I've tried several different brands over the years. I _always_ avoid the ones that are packed with olive oil since it's a virtual certainty that the oil is 3rd rate... and even possibly rancid (a problem that's often encountered _and_ illegal) The best tasting canned sardines I've found are the ones that come in the _Nuri_ brand.

    I lived in a small fishing village in the south of Spain where they fished sardines. Locals call them the "King of the Sea". All the local bars served toasted sardine sandwiches. I've had them fresh off the boat cooked on driftwood fires. Still my favourite seafood.

      I spent 3 weeks in Portugal, and whole freshly caught Sardines (6" to 8" long ), charcoal grilled to perfection, was the starter for every single meal, both in peoples homes and at restaurants. I fell in love with Portugal after that.

    60 years old and tried my first sardine last week. A gentleman from the senior recreation center gave a can to my sister. I just stared at it for a while. Lol. Sardine sandwiches are delicious - but not simple to make. Dump a can of oily sardines on some sliced white bread and you get a water-logged, greasy cat-food sandwich. You need to drain the fish, use crisp dry toast, add fresh greens, onion slices, plus lemon and dill to cut the oil. Plus something as a contrast on the side like coleslaw or pea-soup. Otherwise, just eat this fish straight out of the can on a Ritz cracker, maybe with a shot of hot sauce or Siracha. Also, anchovies, oil included, with fresh ground pepper makes an excellent pasta sauce.

    • @Estenberg
      @Estenberg 8 месяцев назад

      Arugula is called "Rocket" in most countries. Its flavor is a unique mix of bib-lettuce, unsalted butter, ground black pepper, and slightly bitter Italian Radicchio. Make sure its fresh with live stems (snip the brown stem-tips off if you have too). Arugula turns into mush quickly, like spinach and dill, so store it in the fridge in a bowl of cold water so the stems can hydrate the leaves, extending its lifespan. Arugula makes an excellent salad, but only add oil, vinegar, and herbs. Other dressings will kill it. It's great with pear slices & blue cheese. Buy a big bag and experiment. You will be pleased. Arugula is better than any other micro-green, I promise.

      I am half Swedish and half Sicilian, so aged fish in a can is in my blood. However, growing up, most of my friends were Jewish, and they ate almost all of the same canned aged fish that I did. Of course they didn't use lingonberries, or sweet pickled beets like me, and they used more delicious chewy rye bread and horseradish than my family did, but otherwise, every snack and dish was interchangeable, and so good to eat. These are very fond memories for me, sitting around the table, snacking with my old friends.

Sardine sandwiches with mayo, romaine lettuce & dill pickles were staples in my childhood. HOWEVER, the arugula is a REALLY sweet gastronomic nuance. "Tak, tak," as my parents would have said! I'm buying & prepping arugula for my sandwich tomorrow!

    I am half-Swedish American; so these canned oily-fish, in any form - cured, smoked, or pickled, is a taste straight out of my grandmother's kitchen. The salty oil is perfect with lemon & dill. The bones almost melt like ghosts in your mouth. There's nothing like it - except for IT. This sandwich you made looks tasty & satisfying. My favorite one however is pickled herring on Swedish hardtack with butter, aged-cheese, onions, a sliced of boiled potato, & some sweet lingonberries on the side - plus a beer. But your oily little toasty is a perfect after-school snack. To make it an entire lunch, maybe add a bowl of yellow pea-soup and some pickled beets & cucumbers on the side. Now that's a "real" Baltic meal. I love this sandwich. Thank you. Skol!

    I love sardines. Yesterday I RE-watched this video of yours about the sardine sandwich & today I got the stuff to make it JUST LIKE YOURS (except I used Dave’s Killer (whole wheat) Bread & I added sliced tomatoes & I used regular King Oscar sardines in olive oil. I must say, I was worried about the pungent flavor of the arugula along with sardines but wilting the arugula really helped mellow the flavor a bit & adding the fresh squeezed lemon countered its pungency then adding the sardines… all of those strong flavors in one sandwich actually turned out to be a very nicely balanced & the most delicious sandwich EVER! This is my new favorite & I only have YOU to thank for it sooo…. THANK YOU for sharing this truly amazing treat! I’d attach a photo of mine if I knew how as I’m pretty proud that I didn’t completely fail at making this, 🍻
