Canned sardines don't have to be sh*t!

  • Canned sardines are such a cheap versatile source of food. Usually though -if you are me at least - they are eaten straight out of the can like a heathen in the middle of the night when the hunger kicks in. This time though, I wanted to create a little recipe that utilises the humble canned sardine in a way that is quick, yet tasty, and yet also...easy.
    #sardinesrecipe #sardines #budgetmeals
To make my spaghetti and sardines you will need:
►About 80g of spaghetti (or as much as you want really)
►1 x 125g can of sardines in oil
    ►1/2 a diced red chilli
►Juice of 1/2 lemon + rind of whole lemon
►1/4 of a small red onion
    ►1 garlic clove
►1 small handful of fresh parsley or basil
    ►Salt & pepper
    ►A small knob of butter

It was a spoonful of peanut butter, my body then turned the peanut butter into dookie and ever since my body just remetabolizes that one poopdook which makes more poopdook for my bod to metabolmalize and then make more poopies. I get tinned sardines quite often at the foodbank. Usually pick up some reduced mash at the supermarket for like 60p and fry up a huge fishcake add whatever seasoning, onion, garlic, spring onion, herbs. I've made things like this before many times but i usually use noodles ... they're just easier. I tend to boil a kettle and cook noodles and pasta in a container in the microwave now.

I so wish that I could eat fish again.
I had some 'bad' fish at school and haven't been able to eat it since. It was several decades before I could even walk down fish row in Leeds Market.
A few years ago I was eating my meal on a flight, and unknown to me, it included fish. I recognised it immediately but no reaction! I finished it off thinking I had grown out of it.
Unfortunately, when I tried it again on firm ground it was service as usual!
So I am now at the point where I can eat fish at 30,000 feet, but not in the ground!
Just goes to show how the flavour/taste profile changes when flying at altitude. I know that it is fish, but apparently, my body does not!

I like the sardines in olive oil from Lidl simply fried up with the oil from the tin.

okay great to have with pasta and flavour enhancers to taste. Hum helpful with using up some leftover pasta noodles even a boxed cheesy variety. Waste not want not is my mantra in this economy.

Adding the butter in at the end allows it to make an emulsion with the pasta water, making the sauce unctuous. I use tinned pilchards in tomato sauce as a base for the sauce, no onions as they have no place in my kitchen, but using any peppers, tomatoes or whatever I happen to have lying around. I have not used lemon, but will give it a try next time. Unctuous, isn't that a satisfying word.

@@Adam_Garratt how many times can you use the word in your videos. Perhaps a game of catchphrase bingo, "knob of butter", "unctuous", "who doesn't love a nice big juicy sausage", "I'm not going to be too precious with it", "bitesize chunks", "no need to be too fussy", "it needs using up so I'm going to use that", "smoosch up", "not pretentious", "that is banging", "I'm going to shoot off" bingo!

Sometimes I think I watch British cooking channels just to hear the host say "knob of butter". Is there a metric conversion for a "knob"?
and BTW, little known fact (but true), sardines packed in water are great as a fertilizer. I use them in containers, were I can get them deep enough nobody digs them up, and they are a slow release fertilizer for the whole season. Oil packed is no good. I haven't tried one packed in tomato sauce yet.

Not really haha, a knob Is just a knob. I'd say roughly the size of half an egg.
