I went through Air Force Basic training in 1990 as a vegan and even there I was able to get a pear at every meal and somehow enough potatoes and rice and oatmeal to survive....and family mailed me a snack that I could wolf down at mail call a few times a week. All the girls were gaining weight from slamming in the meats and I was dropping fat in basic training and looked more fit than the other girls. I also didnt have the huge constipation problem they had. Being mostly a raw vegan for the past 35 years and I never gave a damn what anyone had to say about what I eat. Ive never really cared to be around people who are not way into working out and most people into sports don't put you down if whatever you are doing is working for you. Family is more likely to tell you that you are a nut job, however! My mother told me I would die if I quit eating meat in 1986 and I told her " no problem!! then at least I wont have to worry about dealing with the constipation that meat causes me. Who wants to live here forever mom? Leave me alone"! Lol flash forward 35 years and she ends up with autoimmune issues and still eats meat and eggs and cooks everything.....some people think their sedating cooked food is the only reason to live ...it is THEIR DRUG OF CHOICE. I recognize this as I am a former IV heroine addict ....for 10 years. Btw his comment on being perfect is valid. If a person thinks of cooked food as an addiction, which it truly is, then even one slip up makes you feel guilty and tainted and sick inside and deflated. I find it utterly impossible to be happy with mediocrity once my eyes were opened.

Chris is the absolute best! He, in my opinion, has set the bar in the industry of what is possible, and how to do things right. I remember when I met Chris at the Canadian fruit festival- I was so nervous - more nervous than if it was some Hollywood hunk (ok he IS the banana hunk tho LOL) I could barely muster any words let alone entire sentences as he stood in line for breakfast with me (albeit completely distracted by adoring fans) It was so incredible to be surrounded by people like him and Mellissa from raw food romance and Dr Douglas Graham and Dr Sam, John Kohler and so many others who make this lifestyle easier and more accessible.
Since then I went on forging my path to become a respected educator in the field.. however a relationship with a literal parasite (Narc) eventually got me off the wagon, and into some serious mental, physical and spiritual trouble.. It has taken me a long time to get out of that, and back to what I know. and Chris is 100% right about everything. for 3.5 years I was raw, I was the BEST in my entire life. I had endless energy, I reversed aging (and even tho I have been a mess for the past 1.5 years) i still look 10 years younger than my age.. I used to wake up naturally 5AM and go to the gym for an hour, then go to work a hard labor landscaping job all day, come home and do meal prep and then study my ass off. I used to run circles around people and i was very strong with big muscles and was never "too thin" I ate a lot, was razor sharp focused and I inspired so many people around me. for those 3.5 years I also was completely sober, no smoking, zero caffeine (except cocoa) and was a big ball of love and light. As soon as I started relying on others during c0vid.. eating cooked, and then relaxing a lot of my standards and values due to financial issues during c0vid.. I really started to see my darkness return.. it kept coming and coming and coming. I got more and more angry with myself, and my ex for manipulating me off the wagon.. and literally not letting me leave. The only way I was able to escape was returning to Canada for the summer. I'm so so so happy I am healing at such a fast rate, currently doing a parasite cleanse both physical and spiritual while transitioning back to my favorite foods that fueled my most brilliant and amazing times of my entire life. I cannot say enough for this lifestyle, when done RIGHT.. is just.. it's so hard to explain, it's ineffable, surprisingly hedonistic and abundant. Pure love and the cleanest energy. It's a spiritual experience not many people are ready for. And I really wish more vegans would accept that this is not a prison - people are allowed to make mistakes and slip up - I haven;'t even posted for a year because of the shame. the goal is to have MORE people loving and living this lifestyle, not more people AFRAID of the cult-y religious-y vibes and the horrid backlash of being imperfect. anyways, amen to this and all hail fruit and veg. Peace Love and Seasonal Fruit Ya'll!!!

Dang girl! EVERY interview you do just sets me on fire! You are fast becoming one of my absolute favorite people and Yourube channels… (In addition to all the people and channels of all the people that you interview as well lol!) Absolutely love Chris! I can relate to so many aspects of his journey and his stories! This interview actually inspired me to sit down and start writing at least bullet points about my journey and my stories… I am 64 years around the sun so far… Started getting into “health foods“ when I was about 16 years old when I started putting alfalfa sprouts on my hamburgers lol! What an adventure it has been to bring me to the raw fork in the road back in my late 30s… and then such adventurous after that!
Anyway anyway… Thank you thank you thank you Gillian and Chris… Going to listen to it again with my husband tonight :-) :-) :-)

Great sharing! One key thing he said is that he eats 2 large meals a day. My friend who has a raw vegan family discovered that they have to limit their fruit meals to twice a day to avoid teeth problems. When they switched from eating fruit throughout the day to just 2 meals a day, they no longer had any teeth issues.

Strangely, as I was out walking today, I started thinking about the very thing Chris brings up here, about not focusing on food and to make situations where you can enjoy being around people without having to focus on food. I gave up drinking and that meant I lost a lot of people who were ONLY drinking buddies. I was raw or vegan for a while but it was too difficult. Now, I'm moving back to that, but I realized I need to change my lifestyle, not to become a hermit, but to get involved with people in other ways than eating and drinking together.

I had some doritos this past weekend 😭😭 I've had some type of slip up each week during the last month and a half.. either eating steamed veggies or eating a spoon of peanut butter or even chips. For me, it's a challenge because I live with other guys, atm, and they're always cooking meats or offering me ice cream or whatnot. I think the most important thing for me during this initial phase is to stay consistent with my diet change. Taking faithful actions, such as eating fruits for breakfast or only buying raw foods for my own self, will pay dividends in the long term. I believe that's how planting seeds work; micro habits lead to macro success. 😉

I will be trying some of his recipes, as I plan to go raw (one month at a time, for now, like "one step at a time") beginning July 1 (or sooner). I DID just get myself an Excalibur (still new in box) dehydrator, so I WILL be trying some of his pizza, cinnamon rolls and other recipes soon!!
I got dentures in 2020, which makes some aspects of raw quite challenging (believe it or not, even watermelon can be hard to chew now 😭), so I plan to find my workarounds for things, then WRITE A BOOK ABOUT IT!!
I'm really so inspired by your channel, Gillian, and I appreciate the content you are pumping out!! Been going back and watching some of your older videos, to remain inspired and learn new things! I also especially love John Kohler's style (okraw and Grow your Greens YT channels), as he's kinda hyper, a bit extra, and over-exuberant like me 😂🤣
I'll also be taking Drs Rick and Karin's Mastering Raw Food Nitrition course this year (just made my deposit this morning to get that early bird deal, woot woot), which I know Chris and Kamila did a few years back, as well.
I'm just trying to pull it all together in a world that is NOT geared toward raw veganism, with a boyfriend who is still a carnivore and on a TON of meds, and with kids in my home who are not geared toward being raw, either.
So, I REALLY appreciate your inspo, and Chris', toooooo!!! And Raw Natty N8 and Raw Food Romance Lissa and so many others!! Just takin' it day by day and forgivin' myself the slip-ups 😍😻🥰🤗💜💙❤

Chris is a fresh breeze, isn't he? I'm glad you chatted together. After 30 years on the raw path, I don't even think about having one bite of something someone is cooking out of politeness, the puritanical thing disappeared after 10 years on the path, it is almost like a rite of passage all raw living vibrant choosers go through. I've also struggled a long time following the low fruit lifestyle because particularly in the summer, fruits are just so hydrating! And perfect if on the go. I am looking to longer term community now, as a 51 year young woman, it's only as you put more years behind you that you relax into the best fit. Eating raw or whatever should not be like a promise or a law. Even the phrases "fall off" are wrong. Like you say here, it's about eating because it's super healthy and the more you do that, the better. If 5 percent of the time you have other things, it's no big deal. The older you get, the more this becomes clear. When I was younger, it was like a do-or-die diet and that was MADE for going on and off. No more!

maybe if they're doing it wrong it can be disastrous ....and maybe it's not for them too ! At the end of the day everyone has to do what makes them feel great and happy regardless!

Great question, while there could be many answers to this, as some do crave and others don’t, at least very infrequently, the most common reasons one may crave old foods can be as simple as nostalgia, high levels of stress, being really hungry and under fuelled, being hungry and smelling a old favourite, being hungry and peer pressured from friends or family, having eaten poor quality / limited variety of food for a period of time, nutrient imbalances or deficiency, feeling unfulfilled in life, major emotional upset.
From the above you can see food can range from social, emotional and to physical reasons.

Ohh great question, no need consume tons / past actual needs it’s just that the amount needed is more than most think. Fruit and veg are super high in water, high in fibre / volume and high in nutrition per calorie so it’s easy to fill full and comparatively satiated (compared to a standard diet) without actually meeting your caloric needs. One can go a few days or even a few weeks at a few hundred calories in deficit, but reliably after that it’s likely one will bonk and either binge on dense calories (fat or cooked carbs) or learn to eat larger volumes to meet their needs. Beyond this is common to feel lighter and more energetic and to want to move more which causes a larger calories need, it takes some time to get used to the volumes needed. Hope this helps

Recommending high volume of food may not be the best choice for everybody. This man has skateboarding as his passion I'm sure he's burning a plethora of calories. I was at Ann Wigmore Institute twice, and viola may she rest in peace I loved her very kind woman, was obese. Additionally, as a second point of view, Brian Clemens recommends no fruit whatsoever if you are suffering with Candida or c a n c e r. Apparently the test they have done indicates staying away from fruit under those circumstances. Personally when I eat too much fruit I get things growing on my skin and other challenges occur. And yes I do proper food combining and eat organic

Appreciate the comment and sharing! When we are talking about a whole foods raw food diet that is higher in carbs and lower in fat then high volume is really necessary to make sure you get enough calories. If one is more athletic then the volume of sweet fruits will be higher to meet the caloric demand, if on the other hand someone is less active they may have a lower volume of sweet fruit and instead more of the lower calorie sub acid, and acid fruit along with lots of greens and veggies. In either situation high volume is required to be adequately nourished both nutrient and calorie wise. Other higher fat approaches may require less volume but they miss the mark in multiple ways which is why most people following such a plan have a hard time sticking to it, usually require or are sold lots of supplements and enzyme powders and are less fit, trim and athletic as per our nature.
With Cancer, Candida and other issues such as diabetes the main crux isn’t fruit but rather avoiding high fat and high fruit at the same time, I healed systemic Candida on high fruit and know quite a few people who have reversed cancer and diabetes on a high fruit approach. If you haven’t checked out “the 80/10/10 diet” by dr Graham I highly recommend it as it goes much deeper into all of this. 🙏🏼
