i totally agree with this guy, guys laptops in general suck for cooling, performance and above all longevity, but even a 400 dollar desktop will outperform and last longer than any similarly priced laptop, not to mention its easier to upgrade a desktop too
Thanks for the tutorial and hope you are doing well. Having random freezing issue, that requires to force shut down every time, with an old (2012) Sony VAIO PCG-31311U (VPCYB35AL). Already done full maintenence, but it continues to freeze, guess It needs extra external cooling to help reduce its overheating problem.

@@mattrosich no I didn't have to do anything in the bios to make it work with the laptop, but just make sure that the i7 you select is fully compatible!
Never use power tools to loosen screws will strip the heads and you will have trouble getting parts off your mother board will void manufacture warranty. Always use manual tools when working with laptops and also use proper ESD wrist strap and anti static mat to prevent laptop component electrostatic damage. Trust me on this does happen and parts end going back as Dead On Arrival because someone did not practice ESD Safety. Hope this helps.
As a Techie myself, and a perfectionist, I recognize and acknowledge his skills and details, especially addressing my pet peeve of Technicians using power tools on a notebook/laptop and replacing ALL of the screws when re-assembling. 1. Most of the dirt and debris is caught by the fins of the radiator. He did not blow air in reverse through the radiator. I separate the fan from the radiator and use a small brush to remove the layer of lint hair or other, then I blow air in reverse flow and look through the fins to make sure they are clear. 2.The "Grain Of Rice" method when applying the heat sink compound to the CPU. The proper method is to spread a layer of about .010" to the entire chip surface (Black in this case) ONLY. Since Silver Oxide is partially conductive, you don't want it to be on the surrounding components of the CPU.
I don't open laptops (though now I need to), I did assemble my own mini tower some years ago (and have done SSD and GPU upgrades since), and have been in various aspects of IT for 40 years - this is a good video.
I've gone through several like videos and find this, easily, the mot professional. 1. No music! 2. Good, simple idea of how to keep track of where screws go. 3. Not removing anything that doesn't need to be removed to get to the CPU and fan. 4. Explanation of everything you need to do and each thing done on screen. Sure, you could have gone more into cleaning the fan, but that seems fairly basic and easy. Now a few questions. For one of these, what is a good choice of thermal paste? What is a good plastic tool to use to clean off the old? What is the power screwdriver to use, or something like it? I'm not going to use any of my drills. And do you know, for the VPCEB1SFX, can I upgrade the cpu from the i5-430m to an i7-640m? Same architecture, socket (G1). Also, can I upgrade the wifi card, or does Sony white list usable cards the way HP does? Thanks for an excellent video on the Vaio's! Ours shows stripes all over the screen within a few minutes of bootup either in Win 10 or in the BIOS, there is no external graphics chip, so it sure looks like the cpu is hosed. Others have noted that while you might get it to boot for a bit after changing the thermal paste, that there is permanent damage so you need a new cpu.
i5-430m - stepping C2, i7-640m - stepping K0 - the processor on the laptop may not turn on. In order not to take risks, it is better to buy i7-620m (with the inscription on the case "SLBPD" - steppihg C2). I wash off the old thermal paste with wet wipes with alcohol (wipes are sold in packs in the supermarket). I use GD900-1 thermal paste (6w/k) - inexpensive and good thermal conductivity. Thermal paste is thick and therefore does not dry out for a long time. I have an i7 processor (hot) - so I change the thermal grease every 1.5 years. I put a drop of thermal paste and then smear it with my finger over the entire processor crystal with a thin layer (0.2-0.3mm). I disassemble the fan and drip 3-4 drops of machine oil into the bearing - so that it works quietly and for a long time :)
I dont remember this video in detail, but i may have taken it off screen and did some sort of canned air cleaning, but you are right in the end, the fan should be opened as well for a better cleaning job. This video certainly needs an update.

I have cleaned my laptop using the exact procedure showed in video. But I have now problem that when I switch it on, fan starts spinning, but no display. Then after few seconds fan rotates heavily and loudly then automatically shuts down. Please help

Totally agree with you, overheating is chiefly due to dust build up on the cooling fins of the heatsink, the fan cannot push cold air through the fins to allow a good cooling effect. Changing the thermal paste will achieve very little I feel when looking at the heavy dust build up on that fan.
You do know some people need these laptops for schools? like: media creation and IT etc. In my college you need a minimum 800 dollars laptop. With a ryzen (recently allowed) or a strong i5-i7. You'll also need some sort of external gpu (most people have a 1050ti but there are some people with rtx laptops).
@@zulu6756 If you can't pay that much money in one go. You'll have to file a form at the beginning of the year. In this form they ask you how much do you parents (or you) earn etc. Then if it gets accepted the school will pay for your laptop (if your parents do earn enough but not that much the school refunds like ~40-70% of the laptop costs).
I have that problem and followed the instructions and yes I found the old heat conductive paste had gone hard and detached so renewed it as shown. The PC started up giving all the indications the problem was fixed. THEN.. after accidentally draining the new battery (left it on sleep mode) on restoring power it failed again with exactly the same symptoms it began with! ie on power on it idled with blank screen for 30-40 seconds then the fan speed increased for 5 seconds and then it shuts down. Any ideas welcome.. Thanks.. Update: I replaced the CPU thinking it had been damaged.. but my Sony AVIO still shuts down about 30 seconds after starting.?
My Sony Vaio was running very hot and shutting down completely when viewing films on RUclips. I downloaded AIDA64 software. This confirmed it was running very hot. When I ran a stress test using AIDA64, it shut down only 2 seconds. This is what I did: 1. After powering down, removing battery and discharging (by holding down power switch for 20 sec). 2. Removed base panel over the fan. I used a footpump (hand pressure) to build up air pressure in tube with finger over the end, then quickly removing finger to send a powerful jet of air through the extraction vents of the laptop. Sometimes this spun the fan around. Repeated many times changing position of the pump nozzle and sending blasts of air through the vents. This dislodged some dust, lint which came flying out through the cavity occupied by the laptop fan. Some was removed from the fan space using tweezers. 3. Then I used a vacuum cleaner (with narrow nozzle) placed on the air extraction vents outside the laptop. Starting with minimum suction, I moved the nozzle back and forth along each extraction vent. This made the laptop fan spin very fast and certainly helped to clean both the fan and vents of dust and lint that had built up. 4. I finished by carefully placing the vacuum nozzle over the fan compartment itself, hoping to remove any remaining dust within the cavity. I gradually increased suction power from low to medium in each area. 5. I replaced base panel, battery and powered up. The laptop has since operated perfectly, with no overheating. This was confirmed by the AIDA64 stress test. It showed temperature to be stable and moderate. I was able to view the film I had been watching previously without the laptop shutting down due to overheating. This method avoided risk of damaging the fan, microchips etc. since they were all left in their original position. However, be very careful where you point the vacuum nozzle within the computer and keep any screws you have removed in a safe place!

ACER laptops let you work for two hours until reaching the fan. You practically have to dismantle the whole ACER laptop, then you get access to the cooler.
I have a VPCEB42FX vaio laptop, the inside looks identical to yours but the mine has a heat sink that only covers the CPU, not the hm55 chip-set. I wonder if a heat-sink like yours would fit in my laptop? Do you know what model is it? thnnkx

NOW I find this vid! I'm actually watching it on a Vaio I upgraded today from i3-M70 to i3-M90 (2.4 GHz to 2.66Ghz - £6 for the replacement CPU). One correction; I believe the chip you reckon is the GPU is actually the Intel chipset, graphics are Intel HD on the CPU (hence two dies on it). ETA - nope, I was wrong, actually that is a GPU chip under the other cooler plate, the IGPU on the CPU is just left unused I guess.

I know how to dissamble a laptop but i dont have any required tools to do it.. I tried to fix my dads laptop, the hinge and its processor is broken and i dont have any money to repair it because i have something important inside it but now i cant even make it boot. The main issue of laptop showed on video is the quality of its cooler system. Sony had underdimensioned it, and even cleaning it and replacing thermal paste, its fan remains loudness.
If your VIAO CMOS battery is a double disk in Green shrink wrap with a connector and wire pigtail; It is a rechargeable LION that gets recharged whenever the unit is powered on. My 2009 VAIO battery passed 100% when testing with a battery tester.
Can you make a video of putting thermal paste for ASUS K43SJ too please? Also if you dont mind I wonder what is the problem to my laptop, the problem is when I open my laptop you can feel the slowness of the system unless I restart the laptop it will run smooth (but not that smooth because its old now).
the old thermal paste should be washed off with a damp cloth and alcohol. New thermal paste needs to be applied only to the processor crystal, smeared with your finger to a thin layer (0.2mm) throughout the crystal - the role of thermal paste so that there is no air gap between the crystal and the cooling system. Slow Windows System - probably a lack of RAM - do 2gb+gb or 4gb+4gb. Another option is the deterioration of the HDD. Check it with the program HDD Regenerator, Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostic, Seagate SeaTools
Man you did so many things wrong with this that I don't even know where to begin. Don't ever use power tools! Don't pry the cpu with a screwdriver! Don't scrape the cooling unit with a screwdriver! Don't drip the thermal paste! Also spread it out evenly on the surface. Booting to OS doesn't guarantee things are done properly. Don't encourage others to follow your method by uploading it to RUclips. Don't fix computers.
What's wrong with using a low torque power screwdriver to take off most the million screws? I know I'm used to using fairly powerful drill drivers - which could do huge damage here.
I HAVE SAME PROBLEM RIGHT NOW, WITHOUT THE YOU TUBE HELP. I TRIED TO OPEN THE LAPTOP, IT OPENED 95% BUT IT STUCK AT WHERE USB , HDMI AND VGA PORTS ON THE LEFT SIDE. I PUT TOOLS AND PRESSURES AND BREAK SOME PLASTIC LOCKS AND I RE-JOINT THE ALL BOLTS BACK TO PROPER POSITIONS AND THEN I START THE LAPTOP AND I CHECKED AND THE FAN WAS STILL NOT WORKING. THEN I BLOW SOME AIR INTO THE FAN WITH THE MY MOUTH. THEN IT START WORKING AND TO MAKE SURE IT IS WORKING PROPERLY I RUN ALL THE POSSIBLE APPS AND GAMES TO HEAT UP THE PROCESSOR, WHEN THE PROCESSOR HEATED THE FAN START WORKING IN FULL SPEED AND I FELL THE HOT AIR WITH HAND AND LAPTOP DID NOT SHUT DOWN SUDDENLY. BEFORE OPENING THE LAPTOP UNSAFELY SIMPLY BLOW SOME AIR WITH MOUTH OR WITH THE HAIR DRIER TO REMOVE DUST FROM THE FAN. IT ACCIDENTALLY WORKED FOR ME HOPE SO IT WORK FOR YOUR'S LAPTOP TOO.
to avoid overheating....just install less software n program in ur machine just put microsoft office,VLC,Web Browser..that;s it its not merely about thermal paste issue on the processor
Just junk the Sony Vaio. Take out memory and HDD throw the rest into the dumpster. Buy a refurbed Apple or a new Dell. The Vaio laptops suck heat and fan noise will drive you crazy. I had one. Tried everything nothing worked. Anybody want to buy a tube of paste ?

@@HealMyTech1 they said that there is a risk in opening the laptop , if opened , the engineer may not be able to reassemble it correctly, because of broaken hinge , I said it's ok don't take any risk but they kept it for 10 days but didn't repaired ,even they didn't installed Windows (the main problem) which is a software issue, no need to open laptop .. Worst service by sony this time .

I had a overheating problem with a vaio vpfcf1, I've followed those steps and it works now as a brand new. And off course, also cleaned the fan.

You forgot to open the fan and clean inside it. The fan is usually full of dust.

I ordered a new fan but it makes an annoying sound because the bios doesn't accept a new fan.

NOW I find this vid! I'm actually watching it on a Vaio I upgraded today from i3-M70 to i3-M90 (2.4 GHz to 2.66Ghz - £6 for the replacement CPU). One correction; I believe the chip you reckon is the GPU is actually the Intel chipset, graphics are Intel HD on the CPU (hence two dies on it). ETA - nope, I was wrong, actually that is a GPU chip under the other cooler plate, the IGPU on the CPU is just left unused I guess.

My laptop has the exact same problem so I bought a new fan. After I bought the fan it started making the sound again after 6 months!!! When I 'karate chop' it, it stops but then resumes 5 seconds later. I need help plz. :)

I have the same laptop like you and it also overheat but also it's problem is that after putting the thermal paste I start it and then while windows was loading it automatically turn off like it has 0% battery but when I checked it, it was 78%. I started again but it turn off without showing anything after turning the power on please help me.

The main issue of laptop showed on video is the quality of its cooler system. Sony had underdimensioned it, and even cleaning it and replacing thermal paste, its fan remains loudness.

Slow Windows System - probably a lack of RAM - do 2gb+gb or 4gb+4gb. Another option is the deterioration of the HDD. Check it with the program HDD Regenerator, Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostic, Seagate SeaTools
for the laptop to use all the RAM, you need to use Windows 64 bits: Ws 7 x64, Ws 8.1, Ws 10 Home / Pro.

Don't scrape the cooling unit with a screwdriver!
Don't drip the thermal paste! Also spread it out evenly on the surface.
Booting to OS doesn't guarantee things are done properly.
Don't encourage others to follow your method by uploading it to RUclips.

What's wrong with using a low torque power screwdriver to take off most the million screws? I know I'm used to using fairly powerful drill drivers - which could do huge damage here.

THEN I BLOW SOME AIR INTO THE FAN WITH THE MY MOUTH. THEN IT START WORKING AND TO MAKE SURE IT IS WORKING PROPERLY I RUN ALL THE POSSIBLE APPS AND GAMES TO HEAT UP THE PROCESSOR, WHEN THE PROCESSOR HEATED THE FAN START WORKING IN FULL SPEED AND I FELL THE HOT AIR WITH HAND AND LAPTOP DID NOT SHUT DOWN SUDDENLY.
BEFORE OPENING THE LAPTOP UNSAFELY SIMPLY BLOW SOME AIR WITH MOUTH OR WITH THE HAIR DRIER TO REMOVE DUST FROM THE FAN. IT ACCIDENTALLY WORKED FOR ME HOPE SO IT WORK FOR YOUR'S LAPTOP TOO.
Cleaning a heatsink with a screwdriver ... what ? It destroy it. It will make the heat transfer harder.
And plz if you can put a vidio how you make soft were for the hard disk internal and make It on Windows 7

Just junk the Sony Vaio. Take out memory and HDD throw the rest into the dumpster. Buy a refurbed Apple or a new Dell. The Vaio laptops suck heat and fan noise will drive you crazy. I had one. Tried everything nothing worked. Anybody want to buy a tube of paste ?

they said that there is a risk in opening the laptop , if opened , the engineer may not be able to reassemble it correctly, because of broaken hinge , I said it's ok don't take any risk but they kept it for 10 days but didn't repaired ,even they didn't installed Windows (the main problem) which is a software issue, no need to open laptop ..
