+Hung Nguyen that makes so much sence man ... but u know they dont do that cus all they care about is money and they want our shit to break after some time
Hello Steve, I think I have the same problem. Bought a used Compaq C700 laptop and it started shutting down for no reason. Going to clean the fan. One of your many great videos. My thanks to you in advance. Richard
This was a great tutorial. I discovered a fan stopped working on one of my laptops and tried vacuuming it before taking it apart. Its intake is fairly open and a large amount of fuzz came out. The fan now is operating again. I did it on another and a large amount wanted to come out but a mesh screen kept it in. I used tweezers and slowly got it all out but it runs great. Those computers are both 6 years old but I am going to keep them and the new ones cleaned from now on. Thanks.
Hi Steeve, Thanks for this wonderful tutorial. What i like about it is that it's not scripted, the way you explain things are basically base on your observation on the item/product on subject. Keep it up man.
I have a Dell Inspiration 1764. It overheats quite rapidly, and then shuts down. I really like the video for the way things are explained simply, from what the problem may be to the execution of the necessary repair. So many times, computer problems are discussed in a manner that the everyday Joe is clueless. Keep up the great work and thank you for this video that will hopefully solve my problem.
wow! my problem is fix!!! all i use was the vacuum thank you so much and my computer is not heating up thank you! you! thank you! you just saved me 150$ thanks!!! it was super dusty! i power the vacuum and it solved my problem!! thanks! thanks!
Hi Steve, Really liked the video because my Toshiba Satelilite L505 is getting hot and shutting down. Also, the video gives the the confidence that I can get into my laptop as comfortably as I've always done with desktops. However, my fan IS running and blowing HOT air out. I'm pretty sure what the cause of my shutdowns is.... Minecraft. But it might be something else as I've been playing the game for a couple of years and the shutdowns only started a month ago. I happily realized that I'd just recently jacked up some of the game's video settings and when I slid them back down into medium ranges the problem stopped for weeks. But yesterday, it started again. As I watched your video I was really excited because I thought surely that was the problem. However when you did the tissue test to show that the fan was working, I did the same thing and mine is. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for the insights and the confidence builder. I'm now going to read up on Laptop graphics cards - I know the desktop graphics cards generated a good deal of heat and I even fried one when having too many graphics up and running. Thanks again.
thank thank thank you sooo much, my laptop has been like this for like 3 years and i only decided to fix it now...i can't believe it worked. My fan was so damn loud i could hear it in another room and it was so hot. All i can say is thank you so much :D
Absolutely great. I have been having the same problem with my asus laptop k55n. Shutting down when it got to hot. I have been using a small portable fan blowing into the input and output air actually, with my laptop elevated on 4 objects at each corner, which now after watching this video sounds like not a great idea in the long run . Due to possibly helping it get more dust inside. But it's working for now. I love learning how to solve all kinds of electrical problems . Thank You for your knowledge and instructions. VERY HELPFUL ! I plan on watching many more of your videos.
Very generous of you! But it really takes a professional to do such a troubleshooting. I am a software guy and I can hardly open up a laptop and fix back all the screws in their original places despite you showed how to do it in the video.
Well this is the second 20 plus minute video I've seen and I have to say that you explain everything you do very thoroughly, which is what I think most people need, to give them confidence in doing what your tutorials teach. The last video was about ethernet drivers not being installed and this one, obviously, a fan issue. I've not worked on laptops and this shows me quite a bit of what you're doing. I like troubleshooting both software and hardware issues like yourself so I think your videos provide me with some needed insight into laptops. I thank you for doing this very much.
thank you for the very informative video. My fan is running but my laptop shuts down usually within 45 mins after powering it up. I have a cooling pad, as well as a riser which should do the trick but it is not. I have seldom, if ever, used the battery power - usually just keep it plugged in. The laptop is about 5 years old. Do you suggest purchasing a new battery? I love, love, love your site!
I like using some free software called Almico Speed Fan to get internal temps before and after working on the laptop overheating problem. It could also be noted the heatsink thermal compound needs to be redone sometimes or the heatsink replaced if someone scratched the surface. Good job with the video.
Thank you for this great video! By sharing your expertise and guidance, I should be able to keep my laptop running cooler. All I need now is the courage to actually take it apart! Thanks again!
+GuruBrew I have a really big problem.. My laptop won't turn on even though i do the diagnostic with holding the power button and all of that, it still doesn't work my fan doesn't work and now im thinking my power button doesn't work can you help me?
Just a bit correction on the fan wires: the yellow one is not a temp sensor, but it's the speed sensor for the fan, the temp sensors are on the motherboard.
I have a heat up..shut off Toshiba Satellite A series 7 years old Vista. Thanks for sharing this.I was ready to take it to a shop but after seeing how easy you fixed this Dell i am going to do it myself. Will let you know if i have success or not. I am assuming that the Toshiba laptop is built the same way as this Dell..Thank you.Griff.
[GOOD TIP] 16:28 For better cleaning the radiator fins where dust piled at the fanning end you have to use soapy water dipped tooth brush and carefully clean those fin holes after vacuuming and removing big bust piles on the fins. Then use moist brushing second third times to remove the soapy moisture out fins with careful brushing, you will see a lot of dirt on the brush. Because micro dust particles settled on the fin surfaces and soapy water brushing after vacuuming will do 2nd stage better cleaning of fins so next time the dust wont settle inside the fins so frequently.
You "hit the nail on the head" for me!! I have this same laptop and was fairly certain that I have a fan problem. Your video is so precise that I would try to fix it myself if I wasn't such an old fart with shaky hands! I guess I'll have to pay someone to fix it. Thanks for this great video GuruBrew.
This is awesome what your doing! I wish this tutorial would have been around a few years ago when I had my first laptop(which I owned for 4 years and had problems over heating with it).
Great video, I wish I knew someone who knew how to take apart a laptop. I've been having the exact same issue with my laptop, i took it apart about halfway but was afraid to take the faceplate or keyboard plate off as I thought I may break something inside so Instead tonight I'll try to blow as much air as possible into the intake and outake area and then if nothing else works I'll tear apart the laptop and hopefully find a giant peace of dust like you did.
My Sony Vaio was running very hot and shutting down completely when viewing films on RUclips. I downloaded AIDA64 software. This confirmed it was running very hot. When I ran a stress test using AIDA64, it shut down only 2 seconds. This is what I did: 1. After powering down, removing battery and discharging (by holding down power switch for 20 sec). 2. Removed base panel over the fan. I used a footpump (hand pressure) to build up air pressure in tube with finger over the end, then quickly removing finger to send a powerful jet of air through the extraction vents of the laptop. Sometimes this spun the fan around. Repeated many times changing position of the pump nozzle and sending blasts of air through the vents. This dislodged some dust, lint which came flying out through the cavity occupied by the laptop fan. Some was removed from the fan space using tweezers. 3. Then I used a vacuum cleaner (with narrow nozzle) placed on the air extraction vents outside the laptop. Starting with minimum suction, I moved the nozzle back and forth along each extraction vent. This made the laptop fan spin very fast and certainly helped to clean both the fan and vents of dust and lint that had built up. 4. I finished by carefully placing the vacuum nozzle over the fan compartment itself, hoping to remove any remaining dust within the cavity. I gradually increased suction power from low to medium in each area. 5. I replaced base panel, battery and powered up. The laptop has since operated perfectly, with no overheating. This was confirmed by the AIDA64 stress test. It showed temperature to be stable and moderate. I was able to view the film I had been watching previously without the laptop shutting down due to overheating. This method avoided risk of damaging the fan, microchips etc. since they were all left in their original position. However, be very careful where you point the vacuum nozzle within the computer and keep any screws you have removed in a safe place!
That was very thorough thanks, but my problem is that I can see the fan running and I can actually hear it, and then it just shuts off as the temperature rises, Do you know what might be causing that to happen. I would appreciate any help you can offer for that. I have an hp Pavillion zv6270us and am running Windows XP
Do you think i should attemp this by my self? I dont have much experience in taking apart electronics (except my PS3 controller) and your guidance is the only thing helping me on this. I also have a dell inspirion laptop that is 5 yrs old so i really dont know what i will find.
That depends, a lot of times the compound used in production is not as efficient as an aftermarket grease (arctic silver, etc.) or if it was opened prior and removed by an inexperienced tech, air bubbles can create issues in proper cooling of the processor. Doing the job yourself, in removing the cpu, scraping, and reapplying grease, has become a staple in my diagnostics as it ensures proper seating (and peace of mind in me doing it)
I cleaned my laptop's fan exactly as you showed but it's still running with loud sound should i replace it with a new fan!? and also it's shutting down with a click sound when i unplug the power. What seems to be the problem in this case!? Your response is highly appreciated, thanks in advance.
very good and insightful video Guru! :) i used to blow duster in my old laptop to keep it cool but now i know how to do it right for this one. thank you for showing me the right way to do it! :D
I have to clean my laptop now. I used an air compressor and its so much better now. My fan was overspooled and stopped working. Thankfully it started working again when I tried to push it to run.
Thanks, I have an HP with the same over heating prob. I going to try that and see if it works, a tech told me, I should just buy a new one for the same amount it would cost to fix. I see why; he probably would charge me just to tale it apart, it does look time comsuming. Thanks
FIXED MY LAPTOP! Try GuruBrew's other link: Tech Tips Keeping Your Laptop From Overheating, before taking laptop apart. Although this video is great, it's harder to take a laptop apart than to open up a desktop style computer. Takes skill to pry the keyboard out, etc. I just couldn't do it. My hp pavilion laptop was shutting down frequently due to heat. The fan was spinning but no air came out. So I tried vacuuming the vents as he describes in his other video. The vacuum pulled a small wad of lint, about 1/3 the size of a cotton swap tip, up into the plastic vents where I was able to grab it and pull it out from between the slats. Now laptop is acting normal again. So it wasn't necessary to take laptop apart after all. Thanks, Gurubrew!
Hi there, i have the exact same laptop with an overheating issue. The computer runs fine an all, until i run a game. I can play a game for five minutes, but the laptop will randomly shut off. The fans work on mine , so do you think it could be a cpu issue? Im thinking about adding new thermal compound but im not sure exactly what the problem is.
Thanks for the advice i will try this on my laptop. The problem was that when i played a game ( league of legends) it would shut down mid game very frequently, i think the problem was based on dusty fan so i will try the vaccum thing.
Hello so i have a question i own a HP 625 it's not the fastest laptop but the overheating is insane it's not like dust is blocking it since i clean it weekly but still it overheats at a level that you can't even let your hand for a minute before the fan. what would you recommend doing to fix this issue.
Hey GuruBrew, I've got the same kind of laptop but different ports, Dell Inspiron N5010, I've located the fan, can I clean it with a vacuum, I've got no time to take my laptop apart, and I'm scared I'll mess up
I tried using my fingers to turn the fan but as what I saw in your video the fan turned easily and freely. There's something on below the fan but I can't remove the fan itself. Should i pull it hard? Im scared
yea but thise fans only cost a dollar and the things full of dirt still and the motor shaft is worn and it sounds noisey to me. a brand new one wont have that noise
Hello Good Sir i want some consult regarding my laptop, my laptop gets overheated once i start running a hard programs or worse when i want to play game it gets overheated especially the CPU and then it turn off and sometimes some wired stuff happens in my screen what do you think is the issue Thank you very much
I have a Toshiba s50 that was overheating. I took the heat sink apart to find a large clump of dust blocking the vents so I assumed removing this would solve the issue. Now the fan runs as lot smoother and seems to displace more air, but the laptop is still overheating after a while. I'm not sure what to do now, the disk is running at 100 percent all the time, though I'm not sure that's related. Also the fan is maxing out despite the fact my computer is not stressed at all, ie the CPU is running at around 20 percent. Any ideas?
79hey , I have a Samsung NP350Vc s07 , I had the overheat and powercut due to 104 degree celcius , problem, I changed the CPU fan and itwas fixed fr a month now it is producing the same problem . the problem is on battery ad on charging also so , what would you suggest
hi, my laptop does not cut of when the power cord is connected but only when using battery power, it is cutting of when there is still over 80% power left over. Does that mean the battery has shot it or could it still be the fan
Ya, thats really common if airflow is blocked. The computer is shutting itself down to protect itself from destruction. It's best to get it cleaned out before using regularly.
you should leave some space under the laptop to be able to ventilate. otherwise you'll get a blue screen a few times and it will start shutting down, because the GPU is already damaged by the heat.
guru brew how much will my comp tech charge me to fix my fan problem I believe my laptop is overheating and turning off because its dirty or because of hair as well not sure but what is a fair amount to charge me if my laptop is found to have a bad fan or just a dirty fan? thankyou
you did a great job i am trying to do repairs on laptops and computers i love to see the face of people get happy because you fix there suff thank you i"ll be watching from now on you got a fan here.
I love my laptop and I have the same problem like that dell laptop...I want to fix the problem but it is too dangerous for my laptop..You know if I miss a screw everything will be screw up..So if you have any other tips than open my laptop fan vent, please tell me!
i like the video alot.i like learn about any laptop parts is good to learn about laptop.i would like to meet this man in person some day.if i open my shop i want this man work in my repair for laptop.i think he is very good in laptop.i always look at youtube fix laptop,i am very interested about laptop so much.maybe i might open my our repair laptop..i hope i will meet this man some day.
Tonight I learned how to fix a fan on a laptop. Now I need to learn how to be that laid back!!! GREAT VIDEO MAN!!!
I wish the fan can easily take out from side just like a CD driver.
+Hung Nguyen that makes so much sence man ... but u know they dont do that cus all they care about is money and they want our shit to break after some time

Diggin' your channel, dude. I don't even have 99% of the problems you're fixing in these but I'm watching them anyway.
This was a great tutorial. I discovered a fan stopped working on one of my laptops and tried vacuuming it before taking it apart. Its intake is fairly open and a large amount of fuzz came out. You're a great man to guide others to their truth of learning meaning-full skills.
Thanks!
this video helps people dont know how to fix overheating laptop. tank you and more success...
this utube helped me figure out how to stop my laptop from shutting off when it overheats. I will take it apart like you did. Thanks very much. Laura
Very generous of you! But it really takes a professional to do such a troubleshooting. I am a software guy and I can hardly open up a laptop and fix back all the screws in their original places despite you showed how to do it in the video.

He said "I'll be back in a minute" like finding some dirt in the fan was emotionally devastating for him.
thank you for the very informative video. My fan is running but my laptop shuts down usually within 45 mins after powering it up. Yes, some designs (laptops) have more problems than others. Thanks, for the compliment. Steve

These tips with fixing the laptop's fan are great!
But you people must be careful with taking out screws etc.
Great video, GuruBrew I Subbed.
Thank you for this great video! By sharing your expertise and guidance, I should be able to keep my laptop running cooler. All I need now is the courage to actually take it apart! Thanks again!
golfgirl511 Thank you, Nothing ventured nothing gained. Besides it's broken anyways. Good Luck!
+GuruBrew I have a really big problem.. My laptop won't turn on even though i do the diagnostic with holding the power button and all of that, it still doesn't work my fan doesn't work and now im thinking my power button doesn't work can you help me?
My laptop shut down in the middle of this...
stop trying to stick it in your butt then...
Check your Laptop processor fan or clean it
thank you man, you are the best... i did it this morning it is working perfectly... but guys be careful of the screws...
Just a bit correction on the fan wires: the yellow one is not a temp sensor, but it's the speed sensor for the fan, the temp sensors are on the motherboard.

Great! This will defenitively help to extend the life of my laptop. Thanks for sharing! :)
very good and insightful video Guru!
If you don't feel comfortable taking it apart then at lease use the vacuum to clean from the 2 vents
Excellent, thank you !!! Now I'm trying this on mine !!!
Awesome. I believe my Dell's got the same issue. I still wish the fan would be easier to take out.
Thanks, I have an HP with the same over heating prob. I going to try that and see if it works, a tech told me, I should just buy a new one for the same amount it would cost to fix. I see why; he probably would charge me just to tale it apart, it does look time comsuming. Thanks

Thanks for the advice i will try this on my laptop. The problem was that when i played a game ( league of legends) it would shut down mid game very frequently, i think the problem was based on dusty fan so i will try the vaccum thing.
great tip...taping nails to laptop.
if you got a video on how to replace fan on HP 4530S would love it (: !!!!!!

Will a cooling mat help keep the temperature fairly even ?
Hey GuruBrew, I've got the same kind of laptop but different ports, Dell Inspiron N5010, I've located the fan, can I clean it with a vacuum, I've got no time to take my laptop apart, and I'm scared I'll mess up
Shouldn't you have replaced the thermal paste? Just wondering because I want to do my computer and I'm wondering about the thermal paste.
Quick! Someone call Albuquerque Police Department and inform Walter White is not dead!
Why didnt you put some new thermal grease since you had the laptop pulled apart ?
Great work..
thank you for your video this is very helping me thank you very much its working now my laptop
Thanks for the advice heatsink and fan on ebay £8.00 can't go wrong with that
why not run a hardware sensor monitor to check fan speed & cpu temp from a usb drive?
Wonderful Video 👍.
Hello Good Sir i want some consult regarding my laptop, my laptop gets overheated once i start running a hard programs or worse when i want to play game it gets overheated especially the CPU and then it turn off and sometimes some wired stuff happens in my screen what do you think is the issue
Thank you very much
I have a Toshiba s50 that was overheating. Any ideas?
Super And Awesome Video....Thank You Very Much Sir.........
Thats like saying "Why does a heart catheter cost so much when the doctor only remove a small clog from an artery".
Ya, thats really common if airflow is blocked. The computer is shutting itself down to protect itself from destruction. It's best to get it cleaned out before using regularly.
wow! thanks that is awesome my computer is doing the same
thanks for the tips.
Great video
you should leave some space under the laptop to be able to ventilate. otherwise you'll get a blue screen a few times and it will start shutting down, because the GPU is already damaged by the heat.
guru brew how much will my comp tech charge me to fix my fan problem I believe my laptop is overheating and turning off because its dirty or because of hair as well not sure but what is a fair amount to charge me if my laptop is found to have a bad fan or just a dirty fan? thankyou

Please help can I use thermal compound on my iPhone 6 cpu and gpu? And can it help reduce heat?
I did not remove the heat sink to the processor where the thermal compound goes. No need to remove just to replace what is already there.
