I'm doing my bachelor project on wearables and their accuracy and your videos help a lot, especially since you have a scientific background to back the validity of the tests you perform. Really nice work!
Hi Rob, have you thought about doing a video/comparison of daily use stats? For example how does the 24/7 heart rate monitoring compare between the Apple Watch/Fitbit/polar HR, etc. it would be interesting to see how close or different the watches are during normal wear and over multiple days. Just curious since you tend to focus on HR during activity!
@@TheQuantifiedScientist My Apple watch gave me a scare. Kept showing waves of high HR, some times for hours while sleeping. Ended up using several devices to see if it was correct, it was not.
Great Video! Just wanted to mention that I feel my results Series 6 SPO2 measurements are more stable since I started using a consistent band. Now, I use a metal link band from amazon for $20 that always is the same size. Before, I used an "infinitely adjustable" sport loop type band like you appear to have, and also a magnetic leather link band, but I found the band was often too tight or too loose, and now that the metal link band is the same size every single time, the spo2 measurements from the apple watch improved. It would especially be loose when I woke up after I was sleeping and I felt that caused some inconsistent results.
That explains why my watch say 94 and the finger monitor says 98 The annoying thing with the Apple Watch is it doesn’t tell you when it’s measuring you O2 so it’s hard to do multiple tests. When looking back on the day there could be a low reading and you had no idea.
Rob - for your ongoing wearables research I think there is a placement / motion / ambient light component that may be at play here - the last 2 weeks I have been more active than normally but apple promptly judged my cardio estimated VO2max to have worsened by 10 points the last two weeks.. then I realized it was taking the readings in bright sun vs dimmed room with treadmill.
Fantastic data analysis, as usual. Great job! I was a bit surprised that you used standard deviations to compare the repeated measurements. I guess that's probably explained by the nature of the data, because normally you would just use the absolute scale and show two histograms side by side.
A low SpO2 does not detect respiratory infections such as COVID 19 as you stated. People with COVID can have a normal O2 sat. It is just a vital sign. There are also a myriad of reasons your O2 could be low, such as pulmonary embolism, COPD, etc. if you have a consistent low sat, just go to the ER.
I watch 7 takes ( on average) 5 readings / night 8 hrs. How can this detect Sleep Apnea ? I would think that many more readings would be necessary to "catch" Sleep Apnea. Heart Rate takes 160 readings for the same period 8 hrs.
EDIT: I was commenting too soon, the immediate next part of the video does test the other situation. This is amazing! 🎉 appreciate the effort, but this experiment had a blind spot. The watch clearly knew that (there were text below the 89% result) the elevation is very high, and it is hard to know whether there’s software algorithm that tries to make adjustments or correction based on the elevation. While this test the accuracy at high elevation, it does not necessarily test the accuracy while patient’s saturation is low at a normal elevation.
Hi Rob , thank you for great videos , very professional , informative and fun . Just a comment on Apple6 Spo2 levels ( I do have one ) you are right regarding lower spo2 levels on apple 6 however if you take 3 deep breaths before it does give a higher spo2 level despite the fact I live 1740 meters above sea level . In addition if your arm more humid ( our average humidity is 20-30 percent ) , it make a difference in apo2 levels . Just a thought . Thanks again Rob for great work. After 1 week …. No comment ?
Hey Rob! Can you do the accuracy test for Mi Watch ? It will be a great help as I was planning to get a Mi Watch. I want to know how good the heartrate monitoring is during the workouts. Thank you!
I have two finger units and they never agree. My Apple Watch seems to give more consistent readings according to certified hospital monitoring. I feel any units tested should be compared with certified hospital units.
Can you do a review on the Fossil Gen 5, I havent seen any videos at all about the accuracy of the fitness tracking it sleep tracking so it would be really cool if you could!
@@TheQuantifiedScientist If a new Apple Watch come out and the SE is going to be the replacement of the series 3 maybe it would be an interesting comparison yes! Hope to see that later in this year, thanks for all the videos
Yeah, i ordered SE recently and just found out that it's using a differerent heart rate monitor from S6. So now I worry, it wouldn't be reliable enough
thanks for this video. Keep doing amazing work! I stumbled at one of the Apple Watch 6 videos and had to watch all of them :) Due to inconsistency in SpO2 accuracy I actually had it off, bit it was great to see your approval that on lower levels it works OK. I think may be for apple better would be not to use percentage but levers or just colors, green, yellow, red. Would be great to see what apps mad scientist like you has on Apple Watch and iPhone. I used to do a lot of work on HRV and polar strap, now checking if there any third party apps that can use EKG for tracks something cool :)
Just had sleep apnea testing and I had 51 events in an hour and it was severe and my lowest saturation was something like 74 but awerage was 92. I was feeling that these numbers might not be correct but doctor said that signals were good and readings are correct. I bought AW9 and have used it now 3 nights and it shows that my saturation is 91+ thru the night. 91-97 to be exact, and pulse between 46-80. Im just wondering that how it can be so different. Im not snoring, but they say it would be obstruction based apnea..
Great content, really enjoying! Curious how the Hr/spo2 of the apple watch holds up against the newest sensor in the garmin watches (elevate v4) like in the venu2 or 945LTE.
Hi Rob do you know when you will be able to upload your new heart rate tests of the fitbit sense? If you started them already how are things looking so far?
I found this SPO2 oxygen sensor to be very reliable/ then you never mention the name of it or include it in your description- ugggggggh. How useful is that!!
Kindly advise sleep position tracker consumer device like beddr, snooor, left, dreem2, muse s. Acvording tobuteyko breathing method, we need to avoid supine position to minimize precious co2 blood gases.
I was hooked up to an oxygen machine. My $15 finger monitor would constantly read between 95-97. My apple watch read much higher 99-100. Feel like I might have a bad finger monitor.
It’s not good for blood oxygen. Ever got a reading below 80%? I don’t think it can read below 80%. I’ve manipulated my blood oxygen down to 70% by breathing exercises and the watch always fails to read it
Hey Jeff, i did applewatch 7 and now on 8 - honestly - my daily use suggests identical results.. finger oxygemeter average at 98, my watch will show anywhere from 99 down to 90.. I think there is a placement / motion / ambient light component that may be at play here - the last 2 weeks I have been more active than normally but apple promptly judged my cardio estimated VO2max to have worsened by 10 points the last two weeks.. then I realized it was taking the readings in bright sun vs dimmed room with treadmill. let alone its moving on the arm.
I can't afford one apple watch and you have so many. I'll buy one off you for £100😉 Great analysis btw and what is the exact model oximeter you have please?
More excellent analysis- this confirms my opinion that this is yet another useless sensor too far for me. Who needs to see something that's always 95-100? I suppose it's some use to smokers and people with Covid
I have asthma and noticed that my spo2 is lower than usual at night BEFORE i realise it’s getting bad again. We are many and we exist lol, never smoked in my whole life.
