Apple watch saved my life! On Labor Day 2020 I was feeling lightheaded towards the end of the day and took an EKG on the watch and discovered that not only was I in A-fib, I would flip into a first degree block as well. My EKG a few weeks earlier had been normal. Without the AppleWatch, I would never sought treatment and would have just assumed I was tired. I spent a week in the ICU and am now on antiarrhythmics. The fitness features on the watch have been invaluable in monitoring my heart rate during my recovery and cardiac rehab.
I was reading doubtful info on it being accurate - accurate to 2% or not- if you’re in serious trouble it will likely show! So thanks for this info, it’s very valuable to me trying to pick between the SE and Series 6 ^-^
Hi Bernie - First, I’m glad you’re doing ok. My question to you - how do you detect heart block? I have diagnosed 2nd degree AV Block and have a pacemaker IN my heart (The Micra). I have gotten one A-fib reading so far. Only had the watch one day. I’m also wearing a cardiac monitor for 2 weeks. Thanks and I hope you recover quickly!
Heart blocks are delays between the two pacemakers in your heart - the upper chambers (Atrial) and the lower (ventricular). A first degree block in an EKG shows as a longer interval between the two pacemakers - in an EKG the first small hump in the strip is a p-wave, followed by the larger wave (QRS). In a normal rhythm (called a sinus rhythm) these two are a specific (time) distance from each other. A longer interval is a first degree block. Second degree blocks are a little more complicated as there are two types. In a classical second degree the p-wave fires multiple times before the ventricles fire. (You see multiple p-waves in an EKG,) in the other type, the interval between the first p wave and the QRS gets longer per beat, and then drops. Blocks are hard to detect accurately on an Apple Watch as you don’t have a proper grid to measure the intervals unless you have a trained eye, but you can see them. A 12 lead ekg from your doctor is always the definitive diagnosis.
I never owned a apple watch and have been thinking about it for a while. You just helped me make my decision to buy the apple watch. Buying the watch wont be solely based on the ecg but the all features that this watch has to offer. Thank you Dr. Risinger!!
OK. I think most of us would know that a $500 Apple Watch isn't going to be as accurate as a $5000 purpose-built medical ECG or other monitoring unit. However, I'd much rather have some idea of what my heart-rate, blood oxygen level, calories burnt, etc. than have no idea at all plus all the other functions I have in the small device I can strap to my wrist. Decided to get one to assist in my health and fitness drive and glad that I did.

What I would like to hear, especially from a doctor, is how accurate and therefore how useful those features actually are. This is like watching an Apple commercial. I think Apple basically said the same things said here. I miss the medical confirmation of those features.
There's a channel called the quantified scientist that does that kind of test on different smart watches including the aplle watch. You should check it out!
Here’s how it helps: if you have no apparent risk factors for heart disease your heart may still have electrical issues and disturbing electrical palpitations. Having a watch that shows you’ve had afib helps the doctor do more than the quickie in office ECG test which always gives fine results.
I’m a patient and thought the same. I was missing the comparison of accuracy. However, I have an iPhone and would like to have something the best works with my phone. I’m on dialysis, have a history of heart issues (personal and family history) related to dialysis or lupus. Basically I have to monitor as much as I can when I can. If buying an apple watch for a senior person and primarily for the acute health features (such as detecting a fall), is there a good justification to buying the apple watch series 7 over the SE, or are the cardiology features non essential in this respect? I would really appreciate your thoughts on this.
One feature that I would love to see incorporated into the watch (not sure if it can be done with current technology) is the ability to check body temperature! I have had 2 occasions to wear a doctor prescribed electrocardiogram monitoring device. One time my cardio specialist called me to ask "Mr. M, what's going on with your heart?". Question: is the Apple Watch really worth the potential health risk from EMF radiation exposure? Upon research, the EMF is high. At least on the new LTE models 5 and 6. These things haven’t been out long enough to conclude any data, but is it worth taking the risk? I want to get one but am concerned, especially when high EMF exposure is linked to generating brain tumors. Any thoughts?
Syx Correct. I presume the only difference is is that our phones are not on us all the time, while the watch is in contact with our skin roughly 10-16 hrs a day.
There will always be unknowns, but here’s my view. I flew a military aircraft that transmitted sufficient electromagnetic radiation to generate voltage that would spark between steel surfaces separated by 1/4 inch in the cockpit. I later worked in the radiation oncology industry. I have a year of engineering physics and a year of engineering chemistry, three degrees and years of working with both radiation physicists and radiation oncologists. I am not worried about the biological effects of our environmental electronics or high voltage wires. None of these sources of EMF generate ionizing radiation (energy sufficient to displace electrons or other nucleons). The magnetic fields generated by these currents are minuscule. Airborne particulates are a much greater risk and many pay a premium to directly inhale them, but then ignore the inverse square law, first ionization energy, and the consensus of our scientists and physicians.
@@ryanwest4197 with radiation it doesn't matter if there's direct skin contact. Also when you talk on your phone you are holding it much closer to your brain, the most important part of your body. Probably just a couple of iOS updates away from each of us being able to continuously stream our health telemetry directly to our docs, lol......just like the astronauts.
Apple support today told me that unfortunately the watch series 6 pulse ox app cannot be set to any consistent interval during the night to track oxygen levels throughout the night. The app will only provide occasional random readings during sleep. That really thwarts getting consistent and frequent enough ox readings when a CPAP machine is detecting so-called "events" of hypopnea. Do you have any more info re setting the apple pulse ox app to get consistent rather than just "occasional" readings during sleep??? Please let me know!
If this is still an issue for you look up ViATOM Wrist Blood Oxygen Saturation Monitor. I use one to monitor O2 levels during sleep. It samples every 4 seconds. It can also warn you with a vibration if you level drops too low, you set the level. All data is stored and downloadable. It's a great product.
all of those testimonies of people who have Apple Watch that claim the health feature of the device saves their life is the main reason why I decided to by for my self too. I was diagnose with a liver problem due to accumulated cholesterol and my heart is at risk too.. so having a device on my wrist that monitor my heart rate can save my life too.. and I hope it will save yours too.
When ever I go to the doctor I take a 6 lead read my hearts electrical activity, my heart rhythm is always irregular. Resting heart rate less then 60 and goes between 70 and 90 during exercise.
I suffer with frequent ventricular ectopics which I believe are quite common but I notice them and occaisionally pvc salvos or short nsvt arrythmia the cardiologist/electrophysiologist is not concerned and I dont need a pacer or anything as it self corrects the structure of my heart is normal and I dont lose conciousness though they are quite annoying to me but ive mostly got used to them. Are there any Doctors that have experience of this type of arrythmia with this watch, would this watch constantly pester me about this even though its normal for me because that would drive me nuts and cause anxiety and in turn more ectopics and ocd ecg/ekg checking or does it focus more on AF? Also I ride a motorcycle which can be exhilirating and adrenaline fueled, would the accelrometer and pulse measurmnts go nuts and start calling 999 emergency. I'd like clarify these queries before purchase.

It’s scary seeing doctors recommending Apple Watch for pulse oximeter. I am recovering from acute respiratory failure from covid. I did a comparison from my finger and when my finger was reading 74 my Apple Watch is reading 91. If I had this watch when I first got covid, I would have read my oxygen from my watch and say I’m good and continue to decline. If I had trusted this watch I would not be here today writing this comment and would be dead at 39 as when I went to er they said if I get any worse I would not make it.
I have a question, when i touch the crown to close circuit, I also touch my arm. Does this mean that the electrical signal shortcuts and doesn’t travel through my arms? thank you for the useful video.
I bought a cheap pulse oxymeter which said my O2 level was 93 so I sent it back, being perfectly healthy. Now I've been given an AppleWatch S6 which suggests the level is 98. I choose to believe it!!!
Hey there, I am a minor who owns one of these watches. Does anyone know why people under the age of 18 cannot use the blood o2 feature? As a pretty decently active athlete, this was one of the primary selling specs for me, and I failed to research whether I would be able to use the feature or not.
Hello! I’m also under the age of 18 and I could use the Blood 02. When I set up my Apple ID I put my moms birthday and she is 46. So my Apple Watch thinks I’m 46 but I’m not. I don’t know why you can’t have your blood 02 heckled if your under 18 years old too. I recommend changing your birthday if that’s possible to do.
That was a great video, thank you. Can you please do one for the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3? I've already reviewed it, but I'm interested to know more about a doctor's perspective of the watch.
the Galaxy Watch 3 isn't even very accurate on even the most simple features like heart rate, often detects heart rates that are 20-30 bpm higher than they actually are...
Apple watch is the most useful product I have ever purchased. I never knew that my oxygen levels dropped below 85% during sleep. My HRV is also low for my age and during sleep it falls below 20 ms. I have been living a sedentary life mostly.
Is there a feature to say wake you up after you have sleep enough? say for someone like a musician that is flexible to wake up whenever they’re like but can be in bed late & could sleep too much if not woke ?
Please be aware! These watches(Apple, Garmin, Polar etc.) are not proved to produce accurate readings by FDA neither for Pulse O2 nor EKG (ECG). Not even for their heart rate readings!!! Also apple watch can not measure pulse O2 unless you keep your hand straight and steady for 15 secs. This is NOT a medical device to monitor sleep apnea. Every athlete knows that for a better reading of a simple heart rate they should use a chest band monitor. I have used and tested Apple, Garmin, Samsung and Xiaomi smart watches extensively. Just to give you an example of how wrong these gadgets are: my Garmin fenix 6 gives me an average PO2 of 92% during the day and 90% during the night which is way of in comparison to B.Braun FDA approved fingertip Pulse SPO2. I am just not sure why someone who claims to be a certified physician would publish such a review.

Well, it depends. Yes obsessing over it is bad, but having a look out is always good, I have pots and my heartrate goes really high and it’s good to know what it’s doing to present to disbelieving doctors. I don’t think wanting to know a bit more is obsession though.
@@GJS-live PoTS, otherwise known as Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, is a disorder characterized by orthostatic intolerance, a condition that often causes multiple symptoms, especially when standing for a long time. When a person with POTS stands up, there is a significant increase in the heart rate above the normal rate and the heart rate stays elevated longer than usual. This heart rate response is key to diagnosing POTS. With position changes, blood pressure may fall, stay the same or increase. (Copied and pasted from google because of fatigue) The doctors tend to take a long time diagnosing this, and tend to say it’s all in your head until proven otherwise. Even when you have the diagnosis, drs don’t really seem to get how bad it gets sometimes. Without smart devices available to the average consumer, I would have had to spend a lot more time in hospital while they had to run several tests. Each of which are causing tiredness over the fatigue that already comes as a side effect with pots. Again, obsessing over it is never good, and I agree fully with what you said there, apart from the fact it sounded like it could be bad for people to get these devices. I won’t reply to this thread after this, as I’m tired with my 4 chronic illnesses. Have a good day/morning/night.

If you are still using your cellphone, then you should not be concerned about wearing a smart watch. And even if you are still concerned, you can wear one without cellular function to lower the radiation.
Hi, is it safe to ware my apple watch for about 48hr before I remove it. I just wanted to test out the heart & sleep.
Depending on the model they need to be charged every day.
Thank you for this in-depth review, really insightful.

I’d like to hear a doctor’s perspective on the effects of the EMF radiation constantly in contact with your skin.
How come my Apple Watch never tells me to wash my hands when I get back home even though I have my location on?
Make sure your location is on and your address is on your contacts on your name. Also make sure your microphone is turned on your iPhone. Hope this helps.

Hi, What about radiation from the apple watch? Is it worth it? Also is it advisable to wear while sleeping?
My iwatch 3 save my life. I developed a fib and it told me to go to the hospital. I am still having issues with the a fib and I have it sometimes all day long.
Can it take blood pressure? at night automatically and record for later viewing?
No they don’t do BP.
I’m in the UK and used to have the Apple Watch. I found I was only using the health features. I now have a Withings Scanwatch which has the same health features for half the price and at least five times the battery life. It’s a French product. Please review the Scanwatch.
Half the price, it’s 279 and not very good looking imho
Yes but their product ECG isn't available in canada so not use to us here
Probably just a couple of iOS updates away from each of us being able to continuously stream our health telemetry directly to our docs, lol......just like the astronauts.
It’s watchOS not iOS iOS is for iPhones watchOS is for Apple watches
@@uravgperson5216 you would be a great fit for the tv series Big Bang Theory :) very specific .
I am only aware of occasional readings - the watch cannot do constant pulse ox readings. Maybe someday!
Garmin watches
If this is still an issue for you look up ViATOM Wrist Blood Oxygen Saturation Monitor. I use one to monitor O2 levels during sleep. It samples every 4 seconds. It can also warn you with a vibration if you level drops too low, you set the level. All data is stored and downloadable. It's a great product.
Researching newer watch models right now since my mom has a iw 3 and was an hour late to her aFib event. Best video I’ve seen yet!
all of those testimonies of people who have Apple Watch that claim the health feature of the device saves their life is the main reason why I decided to by for my self too.
Excellent and quick minded explanation.
Many thanks.
Thank you very much ... Really informative
Got them coming for Christmas. One each

I find the sleep tracking to be really accurate on the series 7 roughly 6hrs 45 min sleep so I need to improve would be interesting to see what other people are getting
Ok..blood oxygen but what about blood pressure?
I don’t find the sleep part of it very accurate. If I’m laying very still trying to fall asleep it thinks I AM asleep.
Does this mean that the electrical signal shortcuts and doesn’t travel through my arms? thank you for the useful video.
good presentation thank you.
I bought a cheap pulse oxymeter which said my O2 level was 93 so I sent it back, being perfectly healthy. Now I've been given an AppleWatch S6 which suggests the level is 98. I choose to believe it!!!
Thank you so much!
What about the cancer & reproductve warning?
?
Is the new health feature, a risk in terms of being a risk
Hey there, I am a minor who owns one of these watches. Does anyone know why people under the age of 18 cannot use the blood o2 feature? As a pretty decently active athlete, this was one of the primary selling specs for me, and I failed to research whether I would be able to use the feature or not.
Hello! I’m also under the age of 18 and I could use the Blood 02. When I set up my Apple ID I put my moms birthday and she is 46. So my Apple Watch thinks I’m 46 but I’m not. I don’t know why you can’t have your blood 02 heckled if your under 18 years old too. I recommend changing your birthday if that’s possible to do.
sweet just the kind of video I was looking for :)
She doesn’t look like a doc. She is just reading the script in front of her
So you worry about the watch nothing when you washing your hands, but not worry about the watch knowing when you get home threw tracking DF..
Hi from Qatar 🇶🇦
Apple watch is the most useful product I have ever purchased. I never knew that my oxygen levels dropped below 85% during sleep. My HRV is also low for my age and during sleep it falls below 20 ms. I have been living a sedentary life mostly.
What series do you have?
@@christelhughes2942 Series 6
Thank you so much for getting back to me, I have the 4 and are thinking of getting this. I have c o p d and my o2 drops a lot
Holy smokes that’s low
You need to see a doctor if your heart drops below 20 at night, it really shouldn’t go below 40.
Lucky you arent bothered by emf radiation, especially from bluetooth for some reason for me.
It's sad how a doctor is recommending something that gives off emf radiation, just like the times when doctors recommended cigarettes.
@@michaelahearl4470 that is just not the same thing 😂
1:46 I'm getting a macro arousal right now.

Hey
Warning; obsessing about your health is bad for your health. :)
Well, it depends. Yes obsessing over it is bad, but having a look out is always good, I have pots and my heartrate goes really high and it’s good to know what it’s doing to present to disbelieving doctors. I don’t think wanting to know a bit more is obsession though.
@@fancifulfox3940 I don’t know what ‘pots’ is. How would you have handled it if there were no smart devices? Why are your doctors disbelieving?
@@GJS-live PoTS, otherwise known as Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, is a disorder characterized by orthostatic intolerance, a condition that often causes multiple symptoms, especially when standing for a long time. When a person with POTS stands up, there is a significant increase in the heart rate above the normal rate and the heart rate stays elevated longer than usual. This heart rate response is key to diagnosing POTS. With position changes, blood pressure may fall, stay the same or increase. (Copied and pasted from google because of fatigue)
The doctors tend to take a long time diagnosing this, and tend to say it’s all in your head until proven otherwise.
U can buy a device that checks ur dissolved oxygen u put it on it finger for under 20 s
I wish garmin adopt A-fib feature. Otherwise Garmin is 1000 times better than Apple.
The Apple Watch O2 isn’t even close to being accurate.
