The “Wish” version haha I can’t!! This comment made me laugh so loud! And it’s so sad bc my 7 year old daughter asked me what was so funny- and I didn’t have the heart to tell her that I was laughing at her “idol”. She loves JoJo- the old version- she has a million bows, clothes, pajamas, slippers, sneakers, Barbie like dolls of JoJo, a JoJo cabbage patch doll, a knock off American girl doll of JoJo; she has bedding- sheets, blankets, pillow cases, Christmas stockings, throw blankets; her school bag and lunch box, and her thermos- everything this child has is endorsed by JoJo!!! She dressed as different music video versions of her for Halloween for the past 3 years! It is crazy!!! And I used to really think JoJo was an amazing role model for young girls. Her songs were cute & catchy- we even went to a concert a few years ago- and it wasn’t bad! (Especially if you are the poor parent who has to listen to these songs over and over- I knew every word!) It is really sad to see her pivot in such a bizarre direction!! I understand wanting to grow up and change your image- but take the Miley route!! Act like a normal 20 or 21 year old! Whatever the F this is- this ain’t it!! Even if she song is catchy, and not that bad- the rest of it is so cringy that it makes it impossible to listen to the actual music, or appreciate it! Most people like music that they can relate to in some way! We have all been screwed over by an ex or someone at one point, and we have probably broken some hearts ourselves!!! So I get the idea of “karma” but the execution & ridiculous “marketing” tactics are too much!!! Also the mega warning label that this isn’t for kids is absolutely ridiculous!!! Jojo Siwa's rebrand looks like "the evil version" they would have in an episode of Nickelodeon. It's still giving kids show. Feels much more like a teenager going through a rebellious phase than an actual adult coming into themselves. And there are plenty of adults thay can do goth or grunge aesthetics without it seeming out of place.

Haven’t fully watched yet but Grace Vanderwaal made a video talking about Jojo and her rebrand and basically said it’s not hitting because she wants to be seen differently but kept the obnoxious dancing and childish makeup and outfits.
If anything she’s made an evil version of what she already was doing.
Grace suggested she does something way more raw and less flashy, like even by going by “Jo” instead of Jojo.

I feel like Jojo forgot she had already started to rebrand herself a few years back and she actually looked amazing. This… this is something else.
So embarrassing... She's still THE SAME. Still childish, still wearing a costume.. All the glitter and birthday face-paint is still there. Just a new color. Yet she thinks this new color makes her "BAD" somehow. Give me a break... I'm so *embarrassed* on her behalf.
I think she believes the backlash is due to her being more “edgy” but it’s just being done poorly and that’s what we all hate.

I think the difference between JoJo and someone like Miley Cyrus is it seemed like Miley came out with some trauma where I think she talked about how hard it was to be on Disneh Channel and how her image was so controlled and she was forced to only be like this innocent young girl and everything like that so then her sort of "wild coming out phase" really felt like her coming out as her authentic self and finding herself after being held back for so long. With JoJo though it just seems like another inauthentic marketing scheme and she doesn't seem to be distancing herself from controlling people or coming into her own (which I have some empathy for while it's also upsetting to see her now as an adult not acknowledging abuse is wrong) she just seems to be moving into the next fake thing. I think a "wild grunge phase" is often associated with finding yourself and that can be the beauty of it but it doesn't seem like JoJo is finding herself, at least not in an authentic way.

Miley and Demi were some of the last real kids performers imo. I don’t think jojo can really seem authentic in what she’s trying to do in mimicking their “growing up” phases bc a lot of who she is as a public figure is super manufactured and curated intentionally. It wasn’t like a kid with a lot of talent being given the spotlight and prompted to grow in a really toxic, abusive environment, it was more a talented kid being molded into the ideal “kids pop star” so of course jojo’s next move is going to look like a “kids pop star gone bad” in a Disney movie

I feel sorry for Jojo. Her mother wanted her famous from a young age and made it happen at any costs. I don't think it's addressed enough how abusive and unethical Dance Moms was. Her mom dyed her hair blonde her entire childhood, teaching her that it wasn't enough to be just herself. She's been forced to inhabit a character her whole life and has no idea what her real identity is. So she latches onto celebrity status and an inflated ego for self worth

Child fame is chosen by the parents, not the child, and it's known to do a lot of damage in adulthood- look at Britney Spears, Lindsey Lohan, any number of child stars. That trauma manifests in different ways. Of course I'm speculating and don't know her, but a lot of the overly inflated ego and delusions of grandeour seem to stem from deep insecurity in that her value has always hinged on her fame, and she was never allowed to cultivate her own genuine identity. I think her perception of the world is very distorted for a lot of reasons that aren't her fault. 20 is still very young and hopefully she can grow up but it takes time

If I were her stylist, I would have went the Wednesday route. Gothic, somewhat conservative and peppered in details of her former self like the bow ...but in black or potentially a refined rosie the riveter vibe? There are very cool ways she could have been styled to fit the person she is now. I feel like this is a scenario of a combination of a person who is in transition from who they used to be to something not yet fully realized and a shitty stylist who didn't know how to redirect her when she started suggesting badly made anti hero outfits for a red carpet. If I were her manager though- I'd lean into this shit and try to get wb or marvel on the phone. She'd be great in a corny superhero movie.

interesting observation Ethan made about how many singers have raspy voices! i might be able to answer why that is, being a classical voice major: rasp in the voice is the result of misusing or over-using the voice, and there's actually a correlation between rasp and extroversion. so, some people's voices are raspy just because they never shut the fuck up. and you'll notice that about a lot of singers with extroverted personalities. not an always-rule, like there are other reasons your voice can be raspy- different vocal pathologies and disorders and stuff- but it's a thing, for sure.
I think a lot of singers who lack formal training (and I don’t just mean “classical” training) don’t understand vocal health. I have a music degree, so they teach us about it as a requirement, even if you’re not a voice major.
I hear a lot of people say singers are good when they “belt,” but that’s often them pushing and forcing the sound out in their chest/mixed voice, but it can often be unhealthy, the same way constantly yelling is bad for your voice. Jojo had being loud as part of her brand.
There’s also smoking, which is known to damage your voice. To be honest, it really sounds like Jojo smokes, that’s how raspy her voice is.
Last thing, I feel like the “raspy” voice is really common in popular music, to the point where it is perhaps overrepresented and/or believed to make someone a good singer? Maybe it’s created a bias where we assume people with raspy voices are good singers. It’s also subjective, and I actually quite dislike raspy voices in a lot of contexts. Idk this was a randomly long and pedantic reply
