ohio was my pick too. she was beautiful!! and that talent was everything i didn't know i was needing. thats was a sensation and really took guts. can't imagine her doing at at a sponsors event though.
Phyllis George was a frequent co host almost yearly after her win as Miss America 1971. Lee Merriwether was crowned Miss America 1955. And had been a judge at the pageant and guest on a few occasions . Sadly Phyllis George passed away from a very rare form of Leukimia in 2020. She was still young and it’s a big loss.
I was at this pageant because a college friend and classmate was Miss Massachusetts. She was as sweet and kind as she was lovely--and a terrific ballet dancer.
Kansas' talent has been done before with Texas in 1973, Judy Mallett, the best. Alabama seemed in shock when she was called considering she was a double preliminary winner. I guess the pressure was on. Ohio was great and VA had something special. Even others in the back cheered when Bert called her name.
As beautiful as Miss Ohio was, I personally just did not care for her talent, though she was very good at it. I probably would have gone with Miss Alabama as Miss America.
At 28:00, during the 50s tribute song "Jailhouse Rock," the male dancer to the left is dancing the Jerk, a dance that wasn't popular until 1964. Oh well, no big deal, it's all entertainment!
Bert Parks seemed out of breath at times and overall had a rough night; as did the NBC production team, for not showing the insert of the contestant interviews. If It wasn't for a poor singing performance, Miss Washington may have won. Miss Virginia had a very nice appearance and was in a state of shock as she walked down the runway. Next to Rebecca Ann King, Susan Perkins may have had the best farewell speech. Miss Florida was showing off during the talent portion and basically begging to be Miss America.
She also resigned a couple months after Miss America. She went off to pursue her career. Typical. Miss America contestants live on a pedestal and can't let go. They either give up their crown and get married right away or take off to CA to make something of themselves.
Miss Texas was very statuesque.and classy looking. If she'd worn a form fitting white or black sequined gown, she might've won Miss Washington very pretty, but her singing....WTF??? Miss Kansas carbon copied the talent bit of Miss Texas from the 1973 pageant. Miss Ohio's Middle Eastern dance was excellent. I think Miss Florida was Miss New Mexico in the "73 Miss USA pageant.
My whole family waited every year for Miss America more than any other show.
Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio, and Penn were cute.

I remember watching this when it was first broadcast, and thinking Guylyn Remmenga was my favorite. So talented, and such a beautiful dress.

At 3:04, the lady in the red dress almost tripped. It looked like her dress was briefly caught by something on the stage.
I kind of feel Miss Ohio was robbed. She was the prettiest and her talent was unusual. I wonder if she went on to be a model.

Miss Washington was decent but it needed to be sung in another key. She's trying to be a tenor and she's struggling.
I don't think Miss Florida was very happy with her placement.

She was the mother of the bride from Hell. Horribles gowns in talent and evening gown. She was not properly packaged or she would have placed.
